St George's Fayre 2014

Page 1

Welcome May I say ‘Hello’ and welcome to this years fantastic March St George’s Fayre. This event is organised by Fenland District Council working together with a dedicated team of Community volunteers. The event receives grant funding from both the Town and District Councils. We should all be grateful for this support as without this financial support we could not stage this exciting event for you. In addition we would like to thank local artist John Abbott for organising and personally sponsoring the Art Competitions. As always you we hope you will find lots to entertain you and your family - whatever your age or background. We like to think there will be something here for everyone! This year - more than ever before, we have a packed programme of activities and entertainments for you to enjoy. We will have two performance stages: the War Memorial area and ‘Georges Stage’ near Iceland. Local performers will be showing you their talents and entertaining the crowds. Do please give them your support - it’s not easy for anyone to get up on a stage in front of people and entertain them. Turn to the centre pages for the Programme of Events. The organisers would also like to thank all the local advertisers and supporters that have made it possible to produce this programme for you - do please tell them you saw their advert. I look forward to speaking to you all at the event and I will be among you in the crowds enjoying the day. The support that March gives to these events is always of the highest standard, so the buzzword is “see you all there” for a great day. Andrew Pugh Mayor of March

St George’s Fayre Parade This year the St George’s Fayre Parade will depart from Bevill’s Place at 10.30 am and parade towards the memorial. It will return from the church at 2.45pm, going to the City Road car park. Programme designed and published by Jane Levicki www.paradigmpublishing.co.uk

Ely & Littleport Riot Memorial Stage 2.00 & 3.10pm

Ely and Littleport Riot is a group of female dancers performing border-style morris dances, many named after Fenland landmarks and notables, such as Henry Crabbe, Padnal and Black Bank. The side is named after a local uprising of 1816. They wear a costume designed to symbolise various aspects of the bread riots: white shirts for the bread that was in short supply; red hankies for the blood shed by those who revolted; black skirts to signify the fenland soil; and waistcoats to express innovation and individuality. The dance group travels nationally and internationally to perform with their own band of musicians, adding dances to their repertoire learned from other morris sides. New members are always welcome, particularly in September, when indoor practices start for the winter’s duration in Ely on Friday nights. Contact Maggie on 01353 615503 for more details.

The Performers Misty Jones Georges Stage 12.40pm My name is Misty Jones and I’m a 16 year old singer songwriter. I’m soon to be releasing my new E.P and playing a lot of festivals this year including the Cambridge Rock Festival. Music has always been my passion since I can remember and I hope to make a lifelong career out of it.

Luci Collins Luci is a 23 year old singer from March who studied Musical Theatre in London and Georges Stage 12.00 noon graduated in 2012. She says “I have received many awards for my singing and acting of which I am very proud. I love getting involved in local events, especially with the well known “Dance Mania” which I have been a part of since I was 7 years old. Singing has always been a huge part of my life and I hope you enjoy my set today.” Wild Honey Georges Stage 2.55pm Wild Honey is a Cambridgeshire based Rock, Pop and Blues band. Recently formed in 2012, they have started gigging this year and have been overwhelmed by the great response and feedback received after their shows. Having a number of years of experience behind them, Wild Honey came together easily and didn’t need to spend much time rehearsing. Each member has their individual style, which collectively creates the Wild Honey sound. St.George’s Fayre 2014 www.marchstgeorgesfayre.com

We aim to promote high standards of planning and architecture; to inform about the geography, history, natural history and architecture of the town; to support the protection, development and improvement of features of historic or public interest and to uphold civic pride. Our meetings are on the 1st Wednesday of each month: either talks in March Library with speakers on subjects relating to March, or heritage walks. We work with the local authorities and other groups and are involved in Heritage Open Days in March. This year at St Georges Fayre, The March Society will be having a stall with a quiz and photographs of March on display and where residents and visitors can discuss issues regarding March’s strengths and community concerns. In addition there will be two photographic displays in Ye Olde Griffin of March’s Heritage .
