Welcome to the “Dog Days” issue, the second and last of our summer bi-monthly editions. The ‘Dog Days of Summer’ are the hottest, most uncomfortable part of the season. According to Wikipedia, it is historically the weeks following the heliacal rising (July 19th) of the star system Sirius (known colloquially as the “Dog Star”), which Hellenistic astrology connected with heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, fever, mad dogs, and bad luck

The unprecedented global heat wave is providing plenty of fuel for tropical storms. Thankfully, hurricanes have not threatened us yet this year, but there are months of storm season still ahead. Have a plan. Through their Institute program each summer, Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce invites local businesses to send bright new staff members to learn more about our area. Each meeting has a theme, and often a sponsor. Paradise NEWS recently sponsored an event with an environmental theme in an amazing meeting space at our favorite local non-profit, Tampa Bay Watch, which will be celebrating its 30th anniversary this fall. A few years back, Rudy Consoni from Resort Realty gave Bay Watch his oil spill check and paid us to ask others in the area to join him through a Paradise NEWS cover story. We would love to do an update for Bay Watch’s anniversary this fall If we can find a sponsor. The chamber’s eco event was impressive.

There were 20 participants supported by a committee of five, including sales and marketing people from both the Sirata and the Tradewinds Resorts. I was sad to hear that many current tourists do not respect our beach and leave trash in their wake. They had two young beach clean-up influencers from Madeira Beach, one in his twenties with 2 million followers and a very mature 13-year-old lady who started beach cleaning campaigns at age 10. They also introduced the CEO of a company that is cleaning up with U.S. made products to replace plastic and Styrofoam with stuff that breaks down, including straws made from agave. An extension person from U of F based in Largo talked about capital improvements, an 1,100-year-old canoe and new displays at Booker Creek and Weedon Island. Peter Clark, founder of Tampa Bay Watch served as captain and guide for the group.

TREASURE ISLAND According to the Tampa Bay Times, a company tied to South Florida-based investor Shlomo Melloul bought the Treasure Island Plaza for $5.85 million –which sits on the north side of the causeway and across the street from the Thunderbird Beach Resort – and has plans to redevelop the shopping center into a mixed-use property with 12,000 square feet of retail and about 40 housing units above, according to a media release. KILLER HEAT According to NoHeatStroke.org, Texas is the only state that experiences more pediatric hot car deaths than Florida. Between 19982022, 102 children were killed in our state after being left or getting into hot cars. According to KidsandCars, 88% of children who have died in a hot car were 3 years old and younger, 68% of children who got into vehicles on their own are male, and most are ages 1-4. Hot cars aren’t

just dangerous for children; pets suffer heatstroke and can die in hot cars. Make sure your child is never left alone in a car. Place the child’s diaper bag or item in the front passenger seat as a visual cue that the child is with you. Make it a habit of opening the back door every time you park to ensure no one is left behind. MOVING Bank of America Institute reports that net flows of domestic migration (people moving within the United States) continue to follow pandemic trends. BofA internal data, which leads the Census Bureau population data by almost a year, found that as of 1Q 2023, cities that saw a large influx of people during the pandemic are still growing faster than other cities in recent quarters, but housing prices are weakening even in cities with growing populations. High on the list are Tampa and Orlando, both with a net increase of +0.8% between 1Q 2022 and 1Q 2023.

COUNTY KUDOS The Florida Court Clerks and Comptrollers (FCCC) presented The Pinellas Clerk’s Office with the Recognition of Excellence Certificate for participation in the third annual Best Practices Excellence Program. Established in 2020, the program allows Clerks and Comptrollers to receive recognition for completing assessments that evaluate the acceptance of certain Best Practices. “We are honored to be recognized amongst

The county’s 2020 solid waste master plan for dealing with garbage for the next 30 years reported that each Pinellas resident generates 12 pounds of waste per day on average. With 200,000 more residents projected by 2050, the current landfill at the county’s Solid Waste Disposal Complex near 28th Street will fill up around 2100. After that, the county will have to pay to truck waste out of the county. In July, the county asked for residents’ input on ideas for

HOTEL HOOPLA Patrick & Chris Calhoon, commercial brokers with Smith & Associates Real Estate, have sold the 1.82acre site at 14550 Walsingham Road in Largo, for $1,050,000 to Indian Rocks Hospitality, LLC near the Indian Rocks Beach causeway, and construction is planned for a new Hampton Inn in the near future.

The Doubletree Hotel in North Redington Beach will get a facelift this fall. The TradeWinds Resort will expand as well. Expect new buildings, 600 more rooms, 33,000 square feet of conference space, nearly 18,000 square feet of new retail space, three new pools and three new parking garages.

Anglers vs wildlife advocates may lead to new fishing rules at Skyway Fishing Pier State Park where 200,000+ visitors fish, and in many cases, entangle pelicans and other birds in fishing gear. In 2022, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute donated the Western Flyer to the Florida Institute of Oceanography (FIO) and the University of South Florida. USF also is launching a new program to increase the ocean STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) workforce. Renalytix opened a new laboratory and office in St. Pete. They use AI to find clinical diagnostic solutions for kidney disease; their KidneyIntelX, has been granted Breakthrough designation by the FDA and is designed to help make significant improvements in kidney disease prognosis and treatment to slow or halt progression early and help patients avoid end-stage kidney disease, dialysis, or transplant.

Turn your fears into faith. Most of the things you fear won’t ever happen. It’s best to drive looking through the windshield, not the rear-view mirror. You won’t get to 80 if you don’t live to 60.

FOREVER YOUNG September is Healthy Aging Month. Start with four easy steps. Eat/Drink Healthy. Dietary needs may change as you age; look for nutritious foods that are low in cholesterol, fat, and artificial ingredients; stay hydrated with water, decrease alcohol consumption, and eat nutrient dense foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and low-fat dairy products. Move More, Sit Less. Staying active can help you prevent, delay, and manage chronic diseases, improve balance and stamina, reduce the risk of falling, and improve brain health. Aim for moderate physical activity, like walking, at least 150 minutes a week (22-30 minutes a day) and muscle strengthening activities, like carrying groceries, at least two days a week. Always consult with your doctor before starting a new exercise regimen. Get Regular Checkups. Regular checkups help doctors catch chronic diseases early and can help patients reduce risk factors for disease, such as high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Be Aware of Changes in Brain Health. Reduce age-related cognitive decline with diet, exercise, engaging in social and intellectually stimulating activities, getting enough sleep, and not smoking. See a doctor if you suspect a change in mental and memory acuity.

PREVENTING SPORTS INJURIES An active lifestyle requires an ounce of injury prevention. Bayfront Health offers these tips. Always take time to warm up and stretch before a workout to get your body ready for exercise by gradually increasing your heart rate and loosening your muscles and joints. Warm up by walking, cycling, or jogging for 5 to 10 minutes. Once your body is warm, do some stretching to increase flexibility. Increase your range gradually. A key to preventing injuries is to gradually build the intensity, duration, and frequency of your workouts. Avoid pushing yourself too hard, too fast. Follow the 10 percent rule to increase activity in increments of 10 percent per week. Exercise consistently; try to get at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity every day. Vary your workouts. Follow a balanced fitness program that incorporates cardiovascular exercise, strength training and flexibility. This will help decrease your chance of injury. Avoid overusing one set of muscles –repeating the same muscle movements frequently can lead to overuse and injuries like shin splints or tendonitis. Listen to your body. Adjust your activities if your body is showing signs of too much stress or pain. When ending your exercise, remember to cool down with slow, gentle stretching. Hold each stretch for 30 seconds.

“In 2020 I was diagnosed with advanced stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and went through months of radiation and chemotherapy. I have to start by saying I feel blessed to still be here,” shares Sue M.

Chemotherapy can save lives. And for that we are grateful. Unfortunately, it can also have a negative impact on your quality of life, even long after you’ve completed treatment. While chemotherapy kills cancer cells, it doesn’t exactly discriminate between cancerous and healthy tissue. Which is why 68% of individuals who undergo chemotherapy suffer damage to the delicate nerves in their hands and feet, known to the medical community as chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy or CIPN.

For some, those nerves will begin to heal and repair upon completion of chemo treatments, but a substantial number of people will continue to experience debilitating pain long after their cancer is gone. Described as burning, itching, pins and needles’ and “akin to walking on glass,” peripheral neuropathy pain is excruciating…until it isn’t.

Peripheral neuropathy can be degenerative. In a glaring majority of patients, the nerves will eventually die and then the numbness sets in.

“When my neuropathy got really bad, I could no longer go to the beach. I couldn’t feel my feet or legs. Between the sand moving beneath my feet and the waves, I would fall,” said Sue. “I’m a beach girl so it was really upsetting. A huge part of my life had been taken away.”

Sue’s other doctors and specialists told her that “there was no actual treatment for neuropathy” and this was ‘just something you’re going to have to live with.”

Sue explains, “I was on medications that dulled the pain some and helped with the cramps, but it wasn’t going to fix the problem. I thought I was going to have to be on these pills for the rest of my life.”

Her family and friends were familiar with her struggles, so she was beyond hopeful when her boss brought her an article featuring Dr. Rebecca Gibbons and Achieve Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine (AAIM)

ECKERD COLLEGE Twenty solar-powered, motion-activated cameras inside Fort De Soto Park are unveiling the world of Florida wildlife after dark, thanks to Eckerd faculty and student researchers funded by Eckerd’s First-Year Student Research Associateships and a grant from the Tampa Bay Estuary Program. Students collect the images and categorize them for public viewing. Now in its second year, the project is using camera traps to understand faunal biodiversity and distribution at Fort De Soto Park. Beth Forys, Ph.D. (Eckerd College’s Richard R. Hallin Professor in Natural Sciences) and Tim Bransford, Ph.D. (assistant professor of animal studies at Eckerd) began the project to learn what kind of wildlife lives at the county-owned, 1,136-acre park and how it can be protected. The cameras have captured an array of wildlife – including raccoons, armadillos, opossums, tortoises, rabbits, herons, river otters and sea turtles. The Estuary Program recently selected the project as the winner of its Golden Mangrove Award. This year there were 13 eligible projects, including those submitted by the University of Florida and Tampa Bay Watch.

Mangos are non-acidic and ripe bananas have a high PH that settle your stomach and help reduce acid reflux. Directions Mix frozen mango chunks and frozen sliced strawberries or frozen banana slices with lime juice. Pulse till smooth and add water to help process fruit.

CHERRY ALMOND SMOOTHIE A perfect breakfast on the go. Ingredients 1 sliced banana, 2 cups frozen pitted cherries, 1 cup almond milk, 1/2 cup low-fat yogurt, 1-2 TB honey. Directions Combine the banana, cherries, almond milk, yogurt and 1 TB honey in a blender and puree until smooth.

AVOCADO DREAM SMOOTHIE Avocado or blueberries may be your best bet for a healthy smoothie. Ingredients 1 cup milk, 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk, 2 cups crushed ice, 2 ripe avocados pitted and sliced. Directions blend the milk, sweetened condensed milk and ice in a blender until very smooth, then add avocado and pulse. Add cold water as needed with each pulse until the mixture is pourable.

David Dennis is an author (Gameness) and president and chief executive officer of Eckerd Connects, one of the nation’s largest non-profits providing workforce development, Job Corps, juvenile justice, and child welfare services across the country. When David became CEO of Eckerd Connects in 2007, the organization was serving 9,500 youth per year across primarily residential programs in eight states on annual revenue of $79M. Under his leadership, Eckerd Connects has grown to serve over 43,000 clients each year through more than 160 programs across 20 states and the District of Columbia, employing nearly 2,000 people with close to $240M in annual operating revenue.

Dennis believes change is needed. “Across the U.S. there are approximately 445,000 children in foster care at a cost of around $9 billion. There are an additional approximately 87,000 youth involved in the juvenile justice system at an annual cost of around $8 billion. There are approximately 2,300,000 citizens incarcerated in the U.S., costing taxpayers an annual cost of $182 billion. Many of the older youth in the foster care system end up dually involved with the juvenile justice system and this is a pipeline to prison. We hope to help them build a pathway out of poverty through employment,” he says. Dennis shared his trajectory and plans with Paradise NEWS.

How did you choose this career? I wish I could tell you that my professional career move to Eckerd Connects over 16 years ago was part of my savvy career mapping strategy; but that is not the case. The seeds for my professional career journey, that eventually blossomed into my current role at Eckerd Connects, were planted in my childhood when at age 5, I was in foster care. I struggled as a teenager to sort through the emotional impact of my childhood.

By age 20, and feeling desperate, I picked up a Bible, in search for some hope, and found it. In college I volunteered as a Big Brother mentor; eventually becoming the foster parent of the young man I was mentoring. My professional path, born out of a painful past, began as a youth counselor and ultimately led me to Eckerd Connects 16 ½ years ago.

Why did this job appeal to you? My prime responsibility at Eckerd Connects is to lead our organization in executing the Strategic Vision set by our Board of Directors, who recognized the need for the organization to adapt, and they had the courage to make the necessary changes to perpetuate its mission and their founder’s legacy.

What lessons learned help you professionally? I learned early that how well I do with today’s opportunity will determine tomorrow’s.  As a young boy, I started a lawn mowing business. I learned the best way to get another lawn to mow tomorrow is to do a great job on the one I am mowing today. I also believe that all successful work is teamwork. I am a creative visionary with tireless passion for work but without those team members who surround me with their complementary gifts and talents, I would have had none of my professional successes.

You’ve said that without success at home, there is no success at work. My career successes were all related to my providing leadership to turn around struggling organizations and each of these opportunities have all required my family and me to relocate to a new city and/or state. These moves required a great deal of sacrifice, support, and commitment from my wife and our five children. They have been my anchor, my advisors, and encouragers through our journey together.

What are your key programs for Eckerd Connects? Almost 10 years ago, we began to dig into the available data at the time and we realized that the vast majority of all the children and families we were serving in our child welfare, foster care, substance abuse school prevention programs, early education, homeless services, and juvenile justice programs had one thing in common… poverty We strategically grew our impact through the development of Workforce Development and Job Corp Services that provide youth and adult job skills, certifications and apprenticeships that foster successful careers and economic opportunity. We hope to disrupt the generational poverty that is rampant in so many communities. We are now operating services across Florida and in approximately 20 states and the District of Columbia.

When Greg Hill became a father, he knew he would always want to be available to his son. Since Greg was not married to his son’s mother, under Florida law Greg had no legal rights to his child. After a series of unsuccessful legal outcomes while retaining attorneys, Greg changed his approach. He represented himself in court, gained 50/50 custody, and achieved a successful co-parenting strategy.

In January 2021, Greg and I established a web-based nonprofit named Our Children Have Rights.Org (OCHR). OCHR focuses on children by helping parents more seamlessly navigate their child custody and co-parenting journeys, most often unexpectedly and unprepared. While we work directly with parents, the goal is to establish a successful co-parenting strategy and living environment that best positions the child(ren) to reach their full potential. Our direct services are NO COST to all parents regardless of demographics or parenting circumstances (single mothers/fathers, unwed parents, married couples pursuing divorce).

Education is at the core of our work, addressing a specific need that is too common across our community. THE NEED: Better Prepared & Equipped Parents who, often unexpectedly, find themselves navigating these challenging and emotional circumstances. Our educational resources, when used properly, can minimize, or

even eliminate the need for paid legal aid, saving parents valuable time and resources. Alternatively, when a parent seeks assistance identifying the right attorney given their circumstances, our legal aid navigation support guides them through that process as well.

Our direct services include NO COST consultations (Zoom, FaceTime, phone) and NO COST documentation review (parenting plans). We’re proud that the scope of our work covers a wide range of human services. It’s a direct result of careful listening to parents who share with us the “ancillary challenges” they face while establishing custody through court. These roadblocks can include housing assistance, behavioral health, counseling, employment, and access to basic needs, among others. We address these challenges through a network of local program partners: Pinellas County Government, 211 Tampa Bay, Bay Area Legal Services, Feeding Tampa Bay, Gulf Coast JFCS, ClearPath Health, Hands Across The Bay, Florida KidCare and many others.

Since inception, OCHR has served over 20,000 parents, conducted no-cost consultations with 955 parents, and reviewed 419 parenting plans. We were recently recognized by AMPLIFY Clearwater, celebrating a nonprofit that’s “Well on its way.” We even adopted Sand Key Park & Beach for volunteer opportunities in our community. For the secondnd year in a row, Florida Healthy Kids Corporation has selected the organization as one of 10 statewide recipients of the Florida KidCare “Back To School” grant initiative ($6,500). Florida KidCare is the umbrella brand for the four government-sponsored health insurance programs – Medicaid, MediKids, Florida Healthy Kids and the Children’s Medical Services (CMS) Health Plan – that together provide a seamless continuum of coverage for Florida children from birth through the end of age 18. Approximately 331,000 children in Florida do not have health and dental insurance. More than half of those children – 162,000 – are likely eligible for low-cost Florida KidCare coverage.

Maggie Andrews traps gators in small-town Florida and espresso bar owner Lara Lewis is an amateur sleuth bent on solving a murder. They’re both strong heroines from author Tamara Lush’s novels, rich in personality with busy lives.

“I am far more boring than any of my characters,” says Lush, “That’s what’s so great about writing!”

Lush has been writing “sexy books for smart women” since 2021 when she left her 30-year journalism career that spanned radio, newspaper reporting (including a stint at the St Petersburg Times, now the Tampa Bay Times), and the Associated Press. Her stories included everything from crime to politics and natural disasters. “I wrote news for so many years that to me all fiction is fun,” she says.

Lush has been an avid reader of romance since high school. She wanted to try something creative outside of journalism and started to write a book in 2012. She wrote a chapter but later shelved it. Now Lush writes steamy romances, and under the name Tara Lush, she writes quirky mysteries. She is a 2018 RWE Rita Finalist, an Amtrak Writing Fellow, and a USA Today bestselling author.

While fiction has been more fun than chasing real-life crime, Lush says “Sometimes I don’t want to write and then I just don’t write. I try to be really kind to myself if I want to happen. I know a lot of people who write genre fiction and write 5,000 and 10,000 words a day. I try to keep it just under my happy place or around my happy place (1,500-2,000 words) so that I’m excited to work on the book the next step.”

She likes writing about Florida and similar to authors Tim Dorsey, Carl Hiaasen, and Dave Barry, but “not as cynical, in a softer way, more like a Murders in the Building.” And she usually includes a cute pet like a cat named after Patsy Cline or an iguana named after singer Harry Styles.

Her upcoming novel Gator Queen, is about Maggie Andrews who moves back home to help her ailing father and his gator-trapping business. Her twin sister Vera is not interested in the family business but when a rival gator trapper turns up dead, Vera becomes a suspect. Pickleball might be having a moment but don’t forget about tennis. The COVID-19 pandemic spurred a huge increase in tennis participation nationwide, and even with a return to normalcy, the surge has continued. According to the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA), 23.6 million Americans played tennis in 2022, up from 17.7 million in 2020, an increase of 33 percent.

You don’t need to be a member of a tennis club to benefit from lessons from a professional instructor. For example, Sunshine City Tennis is a new coaching business founded by local Brian Hartz A former journalist who’s played competitive tennis most of his life, Hartz obtained his associate instructor certification in 2019 from Professional Tennis Registry, one of the sport’s major credentialing organizations. Hartz rents a public tennis court at Willis S. Johns Recreation Center in St. Pete.

Hartz also helps David Archer, director of tennis at Shipwatch Yacht and Tennis Club, develop a new kids’ tennis program there. The program is open to the public; sessions are available for ages 3 to high school students. The Sprouts (3- and 4-year-olds) program meets from 4-4:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays while the Orange Ball (ages 5, 6 and 7) group meets from 4:30-5:30pm Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Green Ball (ages 8-12) group meets from 5:30-6:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Archer also offers a high school prep program for older kids. Those sessions take place from 5:30-6:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

When the James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art opened in April 2018, it became one of the most accoladed additions to St. Pete’s thriving arts community. Celebrating five years is a major milestone, with more to come. To date, 200,000+ visitors have enjoyed this world-class museum.

The James Museum provides experiences that inspire human connection and transformation through art depicting the peoples, landscapes, and history of the American West, and wildlife of the world. Currently on special exhibit is Un/Natural Selections: Wildlife in Contemporary Art, sure to be a family favorite.

From extraordinary sculptures that seem poised to buck and ride to blockbuster artist exhibits (Andy Warhol, Ansel Adams, Clyde Butcher, Edward S. Curtis), The James Museum’s collections are robust. More than 400 premiere works of art including sculpture, paintings and jewelry are on display in the museum’s 26,000 square feet of gallery space with a strong emphasis on recent works by living Native American artists from the Southwest. The collection includes early 20th century works by Western art pioneers who have influenced more recent generations of artists. Additionally, visitors will find a gallery featuring depictions of wildlife from around the world. Interpretations by Native American, Euro-American, Chinese American, and other artists bring a variety of perspectives and visual storytelling to the galleries.

In just five short years THE JAMES MUSEUM has transformed from a hidden gem to an anchor of the St. Petersburg arts community.

Just this year, new Executive Director Robin Nicholson picked up the reigns from Executive Director Laura Hine to create the next chapter, assisted by curator Emily Kapes, Education Director Julie Matus, Development Director Debbie Sokolov, Marketing Director Stephanie Adamo, and PR Director Ryan Kasley.

Nicholson attributes their success to the visitors, members, donors and community partners. “We could not have made it without them. These five years have offered a platform for the future. My goal is to position the museum for long term growth and sustainability: build our resources (financial and human); expand our collections and our unique role in interpreting the complex narratives of the West in the American imagination; and act as a laboratory for experimentation as museums across the country ask the fundamental question ‘what is a museum for?’”

HISTORY The museum officially opened to the public on April 28, 2018, and kicked off its first special exhibition, Society of Animal Artists: Art and the Animal, that July. In September 2019, long time Executive Director, Laura Hine, who stepped down

in May, took the helm and implemented a growth strategy that brought the museum to new heights. Despite getting off to a strong start, in March of 2020 the museum closed its doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pivoted to reaching would-be visitors at home with a new digital-first approach. When they reopened later that summer, staff redoubled their efforts to draw people back in with a full slate of youth and family activities and robust programming.

BLOCKBUSTER EXHIBITS A key to the growth strategy was the inclusion of blockbuster special exhibitions with big-name recognition. In October 2021, The James opened with art superstar Andy Warhol’s lesser-known works chronicling his fascination with the American West. The show supplied a heavy dose of Americana-tinged nostalgia that drew huge crowds to see Warhol’s signature pop-art motifs. Following the Warhol show, The James created a special dual exhibition, Ansel Adams: The Masterworks and Clyde Butcher: America the Beautiful, which paired the two landscape photography legends next to each other in a side-by-side exhibition. Butcher’s strong following in Florida helped set an attendance record for a special exhibition.

Black Pioneers: Legacy in the American West featured handmade pictorial quilts that told the lesser-known stories of Black Americans in the West.

Warhol’s West revealed the pop icon’s fascination with the American West and marked the first time an exhibition of this caliber was displayed at The James.

The James is organizing a groundbreaking special exhibition called From Far East To West: The Chinese American Frontier which tells the stories of Chinese immigrants who crossed the Pacific to California in the mid 1880’s through paintings and artifacts. Contemporary Chinese American artists will present historical interpretations that speak to culture, identity, and resilience 10/13- 1/28/2024. The James will welcome Survival of the Fittest: Envisioning Wildlife and Wilderness with The Big Four, featuring masterworks from the Rijksmuseum Twenthe and the National Museum of Wildlife Art 2/17-5/26/2024.

Every Tuesday, the museum is open late until 8pm and admission is only $10. One Tuesday a month guests can enjoy live music.

The museum engages the community through programs and educational opportunities, for all ages, that bring their history to life and amplify voices that are not often at the forefront of mainstream Western art. You can even book a private tour with a docent. Sign up for an event and plan to spend the day. Enjoy a coffee and light snack in The Canyon Café and browse the eclectic gift shop for jewelry, books, art, apparel, and Western items. Hosting film, music, author talks, book clubs, drawing and youth programs, it’s a community playground that educates and illuminates the expansiveness of Western arts and culture. Hours are extended till 8pm for the popular $10 Tuesday with live entertainment once a month. The James even has a 129-seat auditorium where you can watch a film or hear an author talk.

The James Museum will debut Art in Mind, a special program developed with USF, for people with dementia-related diseases like Alzheimer’s later this year. It’s part of The Arts Coast’s growing trend of using art for therapy and healing, as we see museums hosting pet therapy and yoga as well as parties and fundraisers in their gorgeous event spaces.

Joanne Braccio, the owner and founder of St. Petersburg cleaning service Maid to Order FL, is passionate about serving her community, particularly those in need. “I lost my sister Lois and brother Robert to cancer and I know all too well the physical and emotional struggles that a family faces with this disease,” said Braccio.

Since 2009, Maid to Order FL, Inc. has been partnering with Cleaning for a Reason, an international non-profit organization that provides free house cleaning to cancer patients in the United States and Canada. The company is committed to supporting two homes each month for two consecutive months free of charge for cancer patients residing in St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Largo, Pinellas Park, and Indian Rocks Beach.

One of their patients, Deb Debo-Mochizuki, expressed her gratitude, saying, “Cancer treatment left me with too little energy for home cleaning chores. Maid to Order FL did dishes, vacuuming, dusting, and laundry. and education in this community. “One Step assures survivors a community cares for them,” said Claudette Carlan, chairman of the foundation, created in her mother’s name to help other women who were also suffering with this disease. DANCE KING Twenty-five years ago, Ivan Grigorov left Bulgaria to pursue his dream of living in the United States. Since then, Ivan, the owner and lead instructor for Dance Passion Studio in St. Petersburg, strives every day to bring the joy of dancing to everyone. As a painfully shy youth in Bulgaria, Ivan discovered dancing at the age of 12 as a way to build confidence and make friends; his talent won him awards on the competitive the ballroom dance circuit. After completing university in Bulgaria, Ivan ran a computer animation company by day, still dancing competively at nights. In 1998, he immigrated to Tampa where he worked at the St. Pete Fred Astaire studio for 10 years, becoming a top national instructor and eventually a manager. In 2017, Ivan opened his own studio, Dance Passion on Central Ave. The pandemic nearly destroyed the business, but he has reopened the studio and Dance Passion is reintroducing beginners and training competitive dancers in social dancing (salsa, hustle, swing, etc.), country dancing, line dancing, amateur and competitive ballroom, and everything in between. He frequently choreographs first wedding dances, father/daughter dances, competitive routines and quinceañera showcase dances. For Ivan, dance is therapeutic, and the reward comes from teaching. “When people see what they can achieve, I make their day. For everyone it’s different – that’s what I love. Even for myself, when I have a hard day, after 10 minutes of dancing, I change. I feel better. I’m smiling. I’m enjoying it doesn’t matter what happened that day. It’s easier

He traveled the world as Simba in The Lion King and starred in the Radio City Summer Spectacular. Summertime and the living is FLEAsey… That’s right, it’s the time of year that we see more flea infestations and flea allergic dermatitis cases. Although we don’t have a true seasonality and we have fleas yearround, we do see an uptick in cases during this period. The humidity and warmth favors the fleas’ survival and reproductive cycle. The rainy season keeps our soil moist, providing a better environment for fleas.

So why is this important? Aren’t these pests just annoying creatures that cause us to itch. The answer to this is NO. Fleas can not only cause severe allergic reactions in our pets and in us, but they are vectors for disease.

Vectors are organisms (like fleas, ticks, etc.) that harbor the disease-causing organisms

in their bodies. When they bite their victim, they can inject and infect that organism, causing disease.

How bad can this be? Well, fleas have been known to carry Yersinia Pestis which is the bacteria that causes Bubonic Plague. Luckily, we have all but eradicated this disease through control of rat populations and pesticides but there are occasional cases that still occur to this day. More commonly, diseases like bartonellosis (cat scratch fever) and typhus can be transmitted, infecting humans and animals.

Even more common is the flea tapeworm. Typically detected around the rear end of cats and dogs as rice-like white wriggling worms, these patients get these from chewing on

themselves when they have fleas and ingesting them. The tapeworm larvae that are in the ingested flea then mature into the larger worms which then release the segments or proglottids which are the rice-like segments. These segments carry the eggs which are then eaten by the flea larva, completing the cycle.

Thankfully we have isoxazoline flea control medications that are very safe for most pets and very highly effective against fleas and ticks (Nexgard, Simparica, and Bravecto, most commonly). For environmental control of fleas, there are pesticides that are safe for our pets. Products like diatomaceous earth have also been known to be effective.

Grief: A Blessing or a Curse?

When was the last time you experienced grief? Some people see it as a deep and meaningful rite of passage, a blessing of sorts – and others see it as a painful curse they wish would never visit them. Which is your perspective? If we want to experience the profound meaning of life in a human skin, accepting our grief is not an option. The only choice we have is how we process grief.

A very close friend’s mother passed last night; she was 100 years of age. It has reawakened within my heart and mind the pain and sadness associated with losing both of my parents about seven years ago, each just shy of their 95th birthday–and my beloved dog of thirteen years, MacDoodle, just six weeks ago. While all three beloved people – and my dog – lived extremely full and productive lives, their passing has, nonetheless, created an unfillable emptiness in my mind and heart. This void shall be there until the day it becomes someone else’s time to grieve for me.

If we are mindful when someone we love makes their transition we’ll see that in the midst of the loss there lies the pristine emptiness of the sacred void. In time, we’ll realize the best way to memorialize that relationship is to reenter and reverently engage in life, recognizing we have not become less because of that loss; we have become more as we carry the memory of that person or pet in our heart forever. What makes it easier to embrace our pain is when we remember that the invisible emotion of grief (aka, a boundless love that surpasses all human comprehension) forever lives in that space.

Processing the death of a loved one is a process that actually never ends. As Keanu Reeves inferred, grief really never goes away – it simply sublimates, and shape shifts over time.

Whether it’s a sudden and unexpected transition or one we see coming because of prolonged illness or declining health, to contemplate the meaning of life without that person or pet opens the sacred door to the heart and invites us to explore several

things. Foremost, we get to fully appreciate the role that person or pet played in our life, be it a parent, a child, a close family member, our best friend, or our beloved pet. In short, their passing invites us to acknowledge and grieve the loss they represent – a loss we can never duplicate or replace.

I have long believed that fear attaches itself to a concern of the loss – or death – of someone or something. Beyond the loss of a loved one, our grieving can include the death of a lifestyle, a job, a home, or even a reputation. The practice of a lifetime is to remember that life itself is but one long sacred continuum that connects everyone and everything. Regardless of where we exist on the timeline of life, in space and time, all that has ever been, is now, or shall ever be, is contained within One eternal life; it tethers us to the invisible presence of something greater than ourselves. A belief in separation may exist in our own minds –but never in the continuity and flow of eternal Life itself.

Always embrace the remembrance that when grief arises from within, see it as blessing – a divine nudge – a whisper from the ethers of the Universe saying, “fear not, for you are not alone; the one you grieve is as close to you this very moment as is your own breath.”
