Dear Folks,

The day I found out that the human heart resembled nothing like the heart shaped icon I had known (up until that point) – I was rather disappointed. Of course, biology classes had more surprises for me in store, but this is not the place to talk about it. Barely a teenager at the time, I was a classic victim of the heart icon commercially promoted absolutely everywhere. The heart or love symbol, whichever one you choose to affiliate it with (both maybe) is undoubtedly one of the most well-known symbols of our times. Despite of the fact that does not pump blood in or oxygenates my body, I must say that my affection for it never really died. I use it still when I write a love note to my husband, a card to my close friends and general notes I make about my two sons. While I am very well aware that Valentine’s Day should not be the only day to express one’s love to loved ones, for me, it is one of the days to do so. By the end of the day on the 14th, I would very likely have perfected the art of drawing the heart. As the team compiled this February issue, we tried our best to spread love on all our pages. From Jeannine’s thoughts on the movie, The Notebook, through to Richard and Natasha Poussou’s wedding photos– the love theme is alive and kicking! On another note, if you are wondering what to wear for a special date this month, POTPOURRI’s fashion feature invites you to explore lace, or rather to embrace it. If you don’t have a lace item in your wardrobe (and no, we are not talking about the lace you wear under your clothes), we hope this issue can convince you to change that. Before I end I would like to share with you one of my all-time favourite love quotes from The Prophet, by Khalil Gibran; Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself. Love possesses not nor would it be possessed; For love is sufficient unto love. When you love you should not say, “God is in my heart,” but rather, I am in the heart of God.” And think not you can direct the course of love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course. Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself. For those of you visiting our beautiful islands this month, may you have a memorable holiday and are blown away by the Seychellois hospitality.

“REST ASSURED THAT YOUR DAILY MATCHES HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH RATING A REAL PERSON AND EVERYTHING DO TO WITH RATING THE IMAGINED OR PERCEIVED ATTRIBUTES OF THEIR CATEGORIES.”

V is for Vagueness

I

f you are feeling desolate this Valentine’s Day, here is an explanation: The probability of finding someone compatible in the world - by even the scrawniest criteria of attractiveness, age, education, and lucidity - is heartbreakingly small. Life’s best natural filters are limited (friends of friends of friends of strangers) or time-specific (one cannot stay in college indefinitely). Then there is the oxymoron of choice and free-will. But we do not want to talk about that. In an effort to swing the blame away from our individual shortcomings, let me suggest another explanation for why the process of finding love is rather dismal: The science of online dating indicates that the market for mates is structured to leave you bonkers.

4

FEBRUARY 2014 | POTPOURRI

While online dating has helped many find a life partner, I believe it poses several problems for the majority of daters. First, there is the jolly issue researchers refer to as “asymmetrical information.” Daters know more about themselves than their prospective mates. This “excellence vagueness” (note that I am using only the sexiest lingo) unfortunately means that all suppliers (eHarmony, Match.Com, OkCupid, Chemistry.com, PlentyofFish, Zoosk, BeautifulPeople. com, etc) all present their “peculiar” human products as top-notch. In other words, Dantastic, Outsidein66piece, 1_ShortforSuccess, Hawkeye_Chad, OutdoorsyClint, MetrostoneGuy meet tallladykatie, Singing_runner, frogshavefeet, pinkcupcake08, tallblondie109,Comerunwithme94, rosemaryfrick, cattycamel, JoyFullLadyDee. The whole point of dating is to initiate contact with another human being. Yet online dating is the exact opposite of face-to -face interaction. It is category-based and uses very limiting and often skewed concepts to predict both possibilities of acceptance and rejection. Rest assured that Your Daily Matches has nothing to do with rating a real person and everything do to with rating the imagined or perceived attributes of their categories. It is foolish to believe that people fall in love with categories. Categories do not represent truly diverse human experiences and characteristics. Only real social interaction can create the feeling of love. In turn, love is sustained by the process of meaningful communications. If the human product you purchase online is unwilling to see it through offline then your relationship is doomed from the start. As an avid instructional designer, I must make a clear distinction between online communications and online dating/matching. Innovative computer technology has greatly expanded our potential and freedom to connect with one another and to advance professional and academic goals. But online dating/matching, at least in its current design, has sorely restricted the freedom. Tina Houareau is a Seychellois living in the USA with her young son. “The Notebook” an epic story of love lost and found By Jeannine Gilbert-Finnigan

6

FEBRUARY 2014 | POTPOURRI

‘THE NOTEBOOK’ IS THE STORY OF A YOUNG MAN FROM THE POOR SIDE OF THE TRACKS WHO – PREDICTABLY – FALLS FOR A BEAUTIFUL, RICH GIRL. WHAT IS NOT SO PREDICTABLE IS HOW FAR HE’LL GO TO PROVE THEY WERE MEANT TO BE TOGETHER. If you believe in romance, second chances and making lasting memories, ‘The Notebook’ is a must see. Adapted to screen from the Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name, ‘The Notebook’ is one of the best romantic dramas. It is a funny and emotional film which deals with love, relationships, and the risks people take. James Garner turns in a notable performance as the elder man, Duke, who reads the pages of his notebook to dying nursing home resident Allie (Gena Rowlands). This is a classic “chick flick” with a dramatic twist…you might need a few tissues at the end of the film! ‘The Notebook’ which I am not ashamed to declare that I have watched more than once, is on my list of favourite films. Nicholas Sparks is one of my favourite writer, his romantic novels will often leave you with quite a heavy heart. You get so involve with the characters that you become part of the roller-coaster they go through. ‘The Notebook’ is the story of a young man from the poor side of the tracks who – predictably – falls for a beautiful, rich girl. What is not so predictable is how far he’ll go to prove they were meant to be together. ‘The Notebook” shows the same couple at two different stages in their lives. We see them in the urgency of young romance, and then we see them as old people. The first time she disappears is because they were kept apart but the second time she disappears into the shadows of Alzheimer’s. In a bid to keep the memory of the love alive, he reads to her every single day from that old notebook. Rather than bore her with the inanities of everyday life, He reads from an old, faded notebook containing the sweeping account of a young couple whose love affair was tragically put to a halt after their separation in the midst of World War II. Seven years later, the couple was reunited, and, despite having taken radically different paths, they found themselves unable to resist the call of a second chance. He tells her their love story but she doesn’t know that this is their story, she doesn’t remember because she has Alzheimer, the disease that wipes her memory. Sometimes, he says, if only for

a few minutes, the clouds part and she is able to remember who he is and who the story is about. These few minutes that she remembers become so important. We all wish Alzheimer’s could permit such moments. For a time, in the earlier stages of the disease, it does. Unfortunately, when the curtain comes down, the memory is gone, there is never another act and the play is over. “The Notebook” is perhaps a sentimental fantasy, but such fantasies are not harmful; we tell ourselves stories every day, to make life more bearable. What makes this film so moving and captivating is how determine Noah is to take Allie to their once reality. The passion at the beginning of the film and the sentiment at the end are moments that will make you fell in love with this film and the characters. Rachel McAdams stars as sheltered Southern Belle, Allie Hamilton (young Allie). Allie pays a visit to Seabrook, North Carolina to see her family and while there, Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) works his ‘smalltown boy’ charms on her. Despite disparate backgrounds, the two find they’ve got a lot in common, including a zest for life - and their need to drive each other crazy. Over the span of a hot North Carolina summer, Allie and Noah fall passionately in love. The young Allie is a rich girl. Noah is a local boy who works at the sawmill but he is smart and poetic. Her parents are snobs. His father is centered and supportive. Her parents are direct: “He’s trash. He’s not for you.” One day her mother shows her a local working man, who looks hard-used by life, and tells Allie that twenty five years ago she was in love with this man. She tells Allie that marrying into a poor family will not do her any good. When World War II breaks out, Noah is sent into conflict. He writes numerous letters to his love, but they go unanswered because Allie’s parents are hiding the letters. After several years apart, Allie becomes engaged to successful businessman. One day after reading a newspaper article concerning Noah’s restoration of a historic home he once promised her, she decides to go visit him. That visit becomes their second chance at love. At the time of filming, Ryan Gosling has already been identified as one of the best actors of his generation, although usually in more hard-edged material. Rachel McAdams was the bitchy high school queen in ‘Mean Girls, in ‘The Notebook’, she takes her acting to another level. She shows such beauty and clarity in delivering this story so well and you simply fell in love with her fiery character and her ability to love. The emotions of her young romance are clearly conveyed by a natural and instinctive penchant for delivering her lines in just the right way. Call it onscreen charisma or whatever, but McAdams is a very talented actress. “The Notebook” is a gentle romantic tale; it is a film for anyone who wants to get lost in a beautiful story, for anyone who believes romance is beautiful and real; charming and easy to like, the film glorifies the romance of a young couple who find true love — a love that lasts forever. Well-produced and featuring some amazing shots of natural locations, ‘The Notebook’ ranks as a definite must-see film. Are you romantic? Do yourself a favour and get the DVD and I promise you, you will not be disappointed, I wasn’t, but there again, I am just a sucker for romantic films!

A Fresh Start - London to Mahé by Daniel Balkwill

Patience is a virtue (that I don’t currently have much of) We live in an imperfect world. There are always things that go wrong in our lives in varying degrees of size and severity. Instead of just becoming frustrated, these issues need to be addressed. I need to improve my levels of patience when dealing with them. Incompetent, lazy, rude people will always make me angry though. That won’t be changing any time soon.

Facebook and Twitter are like virtual crack. I constantly find myself messing around on them when I’m at work. This is not healthy. I realise that giving them up completely is an unattainable goal so a reduction in their usage is an acceptable and achievable compromise.

something. I always ensure I have a good 50 minute walk at least twice a week to maintain fitness levels so I aim to keep up the existing good work.

Expand culinary horizons I’ve already sampled and really enjoyed numerous classic Seychellois dishes such as assorted grilled fish, octopus curry and La Daube. I’m keen to try more. Some of the local ingredients are fabulous!

Moderating alcohol consumption It’s fine to let your hair down a bit and let the good times roll during the weekend but I plan to be good and cut down on the midweek boozing. That means no more Tipple Tuesdays, Wine Wednesdays or Thirsty Thursdays. Then I can enjoy Fizzy Fridays with a clear conscience.

Communicate more with family & friends I work seven days a week so have a tendency to get wrapped up in my own little world. I’m determined to try harder to keep in touch with family and friends back home in the UK in future. I’ve just started getting into Skype so that will help.

Play with the dog more (‘Aussie’ will like this). It’ll be good for me too as this is one of the only times when you can have fun, revert back to your childhood and just fool around for a while.

Healthier diet A hot dog for breakfast is not a nutritious start to the day. It’s time to reluctantly deploy some austerity measures and cut back on eating unhealthy food.

Be more flexible Just because it’s the beginning of the year doesn’t mean we are obliged to create a list of resolutions. Similarly, we should feel free to make them at any time of the year if we feel the inclination. Valentine’s Day should not be the only time we make an effort to be more romantic towards our partners and you don’t have to be especially nice to someone exclusively on their birthday. It’s already starting to look like 2014 is going to be a busy year! I hope you all have a great one.

y Royal Ascot accomplice, former flatmate and sister from another mister, Gigi, had recently moved back to Australia’s cultural capital. “You simply must join us for the Melbourne Cup! I won’t take no for an answer” she beseeched me. After almost a year apart there was nothing for it but to do her bidding! Hopping onto the next flight to Melbourne I was greeted by our hosts, Renée and Chris, who escorted me to their gorgeous Victorian cottage in the heart of downtown Melbourne before retiring for the evening. The Terrible Twosome was finally reunited gossiping and drinking red wine

until the early hours of the next morning. We awoke bright and early to spruce ourselves up for the big race. Opting for a black and white lace number with my trademark red lipstick, I made a final adjustment to my feathered Gainsborough hat and was ready to rock and roll. We made our way to Flemington Racecourse, ordered some Mint Juleps (the traditional derby drink) and settled down by the Parade Ring to observe the form of the horses before the first of the 10 races. The day passed in a blur of sunshine, cheering, champagne and the frantic placing of bets. Not only did I pick the winner of the Cup itself, Fiorente, but our group of four was lucky enough to select four race winners in a row, scoring us a tidy sum in the quadrella! We headed to Crown Casino to spend our winnings on a decadent meal at The Merrywell before having some fun (and winning more) at the Roulette tables. Nursing sore heads the following morning, we strolled down to St Kilda Beach to soak up the sun and soothe our tired muscles in the Sea Baths. Revived and ravenous, we indulged in a leisurely brunch of oysters and omelettes at Republica.

All too soon it was time to say goodbye so I reluctantly made my way to Tullamarine Airport to catch the red-eye home. Knowing Gigi, I’ll be seeing her again before too long. After all, the Terrible Twosome still have many adventures to come! Until next time, if you can’t be good, be good at it.

Confessions of a 30-year-old As I get older, I see more clearly or perhaps understand darkness more. I realize how short a time we have been given to grace this earth and I am grateful more than ever for life. I am more aware that we cannot leave here without doing great things that will keep us alive long after we are gone. I am proud of myself, very proud of my 30 years of existence. I am everything that I would have hoped for in being a woman. Past experiences and horrors have not destroyed any part of me, my laughter is still as genuine as a child’s and not missed for a day. My greatest flaws being stubborn, rebellious and hard headed have become my greatest strengths; they have enabled me to accomplish things without anyone’s approval or support. Being a grown woman is not defined by a number, it is a state of mind and daily actions. Being an independent woman is not defined by marital status, it is an attitude you live by whether you are single, married, wealthy or poor. I am a fierce, strong woman and yet I do not believe in superiority of either sexes, I have leant to value both men and women. Having a man in my life, heart and home is a choice and not a necessity. Yes I am getting older, and I embrace all the shadows that come with it. I do not have everything, but I have all the tools I will ever need to make anything happen. That is, myself. Jar! I’ve made mine and it has been such a fruitful experience because at times I have found such simple things to be grateful for in life. Practicing gratitude grounds you and keeps certain parts of yourself at peace by helping you be happy and be present in the moment of life.

“PRACTICING GRATITUDE GROUNDS YOU AND KEEPS CERTAIN PARTS OF YOURSELF AT PEACE BY HELPING YOU BE HAPPY AND BE PRESENT IN THE MOMENT OF LIFE.”

Gratitude by Alexandria Faure Last month I spoke about the incredible power in deciding that we are good enough regardless of what we look like and of the external pressures. Not only do we spend our days feeling like we are not good enough but we also constantly feel a sense of lack in our lives. That’s the Never Enough Bug - it’s a little wacky that we tend to live our lives in a selfdefeating cycle that is supplemented with lack, where we calculate how much we want and compare it to how much we don’t have. Sometimes it’s hard to remain grateful and positive during individual troubles and challenges and at the times when we are at a loss and think we don’t have anything. By appreciating the little things we become more connected to life, especially during the hard times. Gratitude is such a simple word, yet its practice is empowering and enlightening. How grateful are you? I know at times being grateful can be difficult, but it’s a practice that takes time and effort. There are many methods to practicing gratitude, like listing what you are thankful for, meditating and thanking the people in your life, but the most interesting practice so far is making a Gratitude

When I have a down day I look at my gratitude jar and see how full of things to be grateful for it is filled with, and it cheers me up and reminds me of my blessings. A life of gratitude has to be nurtured and practiced every day. Taking time everyday to be grateful makes us appreciate the moments in life that bring us joy and helps us to cherish the life we live and the people that we share it with. The Gratitude Jar It’s very simple. You will need: • A jar • A ribbon to decorate the jar • Paper to write the gratitudes on Decorate the jar and make it special. All you have to do is to write down a few things you are grateful for everyday and put it into the jar. I’ll finish by saying ‘Thank you’ for reading my article today. “We think we have to do something to be grateful or something has to be done in order for us to be grateful, when gratitude is a state of being” Iyanla Vanzant Alexandria Faure has a degree in Drama and Theatre. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS WITH

BE RNA R D GE ORGE S

When a Private Video goes viral, do the ‘owners’ have any legal rights to take action? – if they know exactly who did it? The right to privacy – for this is what this question addresses – is not an easy one to pin down as many people have found to their shock. One would have thought that the problem is an easy one to address, but the question underlying all privacy matters is often subjective: when is private really private? To the person affected, all things done in private should be kept private between the parties. To the person disseminating the information, the argument is often if you want to remain private, then don’t do anything that might embarrass you. The law has to navigate between these two extremes. Then, there is the issue of who disseminates the incriminating information. If it is a third party – a burglar, say, who has got hold of the tape – then the answer is pretty obvious. But what if it is a ‘participant’? Happily, there is a happy ending. But, first, a bit of law. One would expect the right to privacy to be in the constitution as a basic right. Unfortunately, it isn’t. The right to privacy there is limited to actions of the state – phone-tapping, searches of property and the like. The traditional right to privacy is not a guaranteed fundamental right. The right is, instead, found in the Civil Code, but it is a vague right which only says that a person has the protection of the court with regard to rights to privacy, and ducks the question of what the right to privacy is. We are thus thrown back to the broad principles of law to determine responsibility. And, as with so many things, the answer is a question of degree. If you decide to walk around your garden in your birthday suit, and your house is near a main road, and a passerby takes your picture, then you don’t really have a complaint. If, in addition, you are a public figure, or a cultural icon with many fans, then there may even be an obligation on the passerby taking your picture and spreading it around because your behavior is so odd that the public – or your fans – should know about it. These wouldn’t be breaches of privacy. But if you are in your shower in your home and a photographer has to climb a tree with a telephoto lens to get a picture of you showering, then that would definitely be a breach of privacy. In these two extreme examples lies the solution to our problem – some things are permissible; others are not. The distinguishing mark is a matter of degree. Two people make an intimate private home tape. Do they have the right to do that? Yes, of course they do. Do either of the two have the right to make it public? No. Why not? Because there is another participant in the action. While everyone has the freedom to disseminate anything intimate (whether that is just a bad karaoke moment or a sexual act does not matter) about him or herself – through photos, YouTube or in print – the

“ALTHOUGH THERE IS NO REAL RIGHT TO PRIVACY IN THE LAW, IT IS CLEAR THAT PUTTING INTO THE PUBLIC DOMAIN SOMETHING INTIMATE AND NEVER INTENDED FOR PUBLIC CONSUMPTION IS WRONG BECAUSE IT AFFECTS THE ‘INNOCENT’ PARTY.” person has no right to infringe the privacy of any other participant in the thing, without that person’s consent at least. Although there is no real right to privacy in the law, it is clear that putting into the public domain something intimate and never intended for public consumption is wrong because it affects the ‘innocent’ party. And any act of a person which harms another must be corrected in law. This principle extends to the act of a person who leaks the home tape of two other people onto the internet. This intrusion into the private lives of two other people is clearly illegal and will certainly allow the victims to seek, and obtain, redress. How do they do that? Two possible avenues are open to them, one criminal and the other civil. It is an offence to publish any photograph, film or tape of others engaged in an intimate moment without their permission. Anybody doing that is liable to be prosecuted and fined for the offence. On top of that, any such publication is also a civil tort and can lead to the perpetrator having to pay damages for the intrusion into the private lives of the victims – breaching their right to privacy, in other words – and for the damage to their reputations. Invasion of privacy is no small matter. It is a rapidlydeveloping branch of the law and one that is likely to get tighter and more severe in its application and results. In a rapidly more public world, with easy access to photo ops and more open societies, the line between living lives publicly and respecting the private space of others is often blurred and the equilibrium easily upset. A good rule of thumb is this: for possible victims, be careful what you do, where you do it and what you do with any permanent record of your doings; for possible internet-posters, be careful of the damage that your momentary or impetuous act may cause to others as it is impossible to undo harm. For everyone, the law may be imperfect, but its arm is long…and its bite painful. Educated at Seychelles College and Cambridge University, Bernard Georges has two Masters Degrees – in the law of divorce and in canon law, the law of the church. He is best known as a lawyer, having been in private practice for over 30 years. Over the past ten years, he has also been a member of the National Assembly. He is currently a part-time lecturer in law at the University of Seychelles, where he teaches Constitutional Law. And, he is a budding writer. He has written and published two novels to date and he promises many more books on history, law and Seychelles.

Bref, « Je t’aime » chez nous c’est une institution, une façon de vivre, juste et simplement un moment à prendre, et à partager. Some winning tracks of the night were taken to the stage including Jakim’s “Donn Ou Bal” and “Trespas”. The former featured Tania and the crowd who packed up the club screamed with excitement. Exhilaration also burst for the latter and other numbers such as T-Tray’s “Pri Dan En Milye” and Telsy’s “Goodbye My Love”. The stage is set for a creative 2014 as the artists gear up to produce more exciting, fresh music! Siport Artis Lokal!

Nelson Mandela….

We can change the world and make it a better place. It is in your hands to make a difference. N. Mandela. Merci Monsieur!

Georges Gravé is the Personal Development & Training Manager at the Maia Luxury Resort and Spa

Do not miss this February... 7th Eco-Friendly Marathon

Medicines in your Garden By La Plaine St. André Medicinal plant of the month: Lapsouli, a.k.a Daun

Rusa, Gandarusa, Warer Willow

Where is it found? Lapsouli is widespread around the Indian Ocean countries Commonly used for: Fever,

Impetigo & Teething in children Also used to sooth respiratory problems, muscle pain and many other ailments in Indian and Chinese traditional medicine.

The Seychelles Eco-Friendly Marathon took place for the first time in 2008, with a modest count of 330 participants. It was initiated by Mr. Dong Chang Jeong, Seychelles Honorary Consul General for South Korea, who is also head of the Seychelles Tourist Office in Korea. The event was conceived to contribute to Seychellois’ health and to unify Seychellois and visitors. The marathon indeed helps to bring Seychelles to the attention of more travelers and contributes to lifting the Seychelles brand around the world. For the 7th edition, the islands can expect to receive some 500 overseas participants, on top of several hundred local participants. On Sunday 23 February, runners will set off from Beau Vallon at 7am, covering Northern and North Eastern areas of the main island of Mahé, as well as its capital, Victoria. As for the structure of the marathon, there is something for a wide range of fitness levels – from 5km course to marathon which covers 42.195km; this follows the philosophy of the event that is to spread the focus beyond mere competition, putting equal emphasis on appreciating exercise and being surrounded by the natural beauty of Seychelles. Medals and prizes are to be awarded to the top five category winners, and all participants who complete the race shall be awarded a t-shirt in addition to their Official Time Certificate. The Seychelles Eco-Friendly Marathon is recognised internationally through the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) label. It is organized jointly by the National Sports Council, Seychelles Tourism Board and INOCEAN M&C (South Korean company headed by Mr. Dong Chang Jeong) which is also the main sponsor for the event. The deadline for entry is the 31 January for overseas participants and 15 February for local participants.

How do I use it for fever?

It is said that the most effective way of drawing out the healing properties of lapsouli is in a warm bath. The younger the patient the less leaves need to be used. Simply wash a handful of leaves, run as warm a bath as you can stand, let the leaves soak for for 5 minutes and immerse yourself in the water for up to 10 minutes. You can fish the leaves out with a colander or strainer if you think they will irritate you.

Beach Spotlight By Kally Buem INTENDANCE What do you want from a beach? Jet skis, volleyball and expensive fishing trips. Then stay away from Intendance; this is a beach for beach people. There’s the Banyan Tree Hotel, a fine five star establishment behind the beach, that can cosset you in every imaginable tropical luxury, sell you an overpriced cocktail with a piece of fruit splayed on top of it and make you feel good about a vaguely worthwhile turtle monitoring programme. But this is one of the finest, fiercest beaches in the Indian Ocean. Visiting Intendance for the hotel is like visiting the Eiffel Tower for the gift shop. The sand is white, the sea is blue and your skin will prickle and burn. Cool it with salt water and give yourself back to the sun. This is a beach goer’s beach. A place to do little more than relax with a book, to sprawl languidly on the sand with someone who looks right in an indiscreetly small swimsuit, to give yourself over to the sun and the smell of the surf.

Nature Trails with Wildlife Club of Seychelles Morne Blanc

Have you ever been in mist forest ecology before? If no, then pack your gear and get ready to visit one of the most evergreen mountain forests, this is no other than Morne Blanc nature trail, a fascinating place to be with several great photo spots with panoramic views and of course not to forget the misty ambiance. This trail is basically a continuous climb from a high starting point in the Morne Seychellois National Park, to the top of a well-known mountain in the west of Mahé. The trail Length: 1 km and the duration of the journey is 1hr 30 mins. It starts from the sans souci road just before the tea tavern (travelling from Victoria). This initial part of the trail passes through an old tea plantation where lemon grass also grows. The Morne Blanc mist forest ecology is also the habitats for many of the Seychelles native plants include the Kapisen (Northea hornie), Tree fern (Cyathea sechellarum), Bwa banane (Gastonia sericea) to name a few The topography of the trail, coupled with the weathering uniqueness

The determined can join the occasional surfer from Takamaka, riding short, tall, quickly collapsing waves on the left of the beach as you look out to sea. There are snorkelling spots around the rocks, out of reach of the waves, and at night skin divers with sharpened steel spikes, torches and more courage than you are capable of, hunt lobster and octopus. But this is hungry sea. Waves pound Intendance and currents swirl even on calm days. Picked up and hurled into the sand by an unseen wall of water, if you’re lucky you’ll come away bereft of your bikini and dignity. But with the right wave you’ll be sucked up and left drifting out into the vast empty expanse of the Indian Ocean, nothing more than a footnote in the paper about a missing swimmer in the south of Mahé. Squint into the sun and look beyond the turquoise of the shallows, into the deep blue, just off-shore. A wave, a dolphin or something more sinister with bigger teeth and designs on your soft flesh? There is no offshore reef at Intendance, no gently sloping sands to keep the big things that lurk far from the shoreline. A steeply sloping beach, errant towering waves and seasonal currents that tug on your ankles and after that there’s nothing between you and Madagascar. If Nietzsche had given swimming lessons this is where he would have taught.

of the granitic rock, give rise to a wide diversity of habitats, one of the most obvious features is an abundance of lichens, mosses, ferns, orchids and other native epiphytic plants on every tree and covering rock surfaces. You may also be able to hear the surprisingly loud calls of the world’s smallest frog, which is endemic to Seychelles, but at 1 cm in length, finding one will prove much more difficult. Other animals to be seen on the track include the stick insect, the Seychelles bulbul, sunbird and the Seychelles wolf snake which is harmless. Extra care must be taken because there are several caves and holes in this area that are highly camouflaged due to the thick jungle undergrowth, so hikers are advised to not stray from the path The highest point here is 667m, to the viewing platform, there is a very good view of the west coast of Mahé on a clear day. Absolutely this trail will soothe you in a comfort zone and I am sure you will forget about civilization…

By Elaine LaFortune

A Seychellois Novelist

Introducing you to a fresh talent in the realm of novelists; someone whose writing takes us back in time, along a journey through the Seychelles, and leaves us feeling nostalgic as we make a discovery into a beautiful, and sensitive exploration of the plight of a young woman, Anna, and her struggle in a Seychellois family, as well as her subjection to a conflict between her British, and Irish colleagues. A distinguishing feature to Rosie’s novel is the forbidden love which brings the missing dimension into the protagonist’s life. Before going any further, let us get to know more about the author as POTPOURRI gives you an extensive insight on Rosie Tirant-Longhurst. TELL US MORE ABOUT YOU. I’m a Tirant, born and raised in the Seychelles, in a family of four brothers and four sisters, with me being the eldest. I grew up in the northern coast of Mahé island, precisely at Mare Anglaise,

“WRITING ITSELF FOUND ME, SO I THOUGHT IF I’M TO WRITE SOMETHING, I SHOULD DO IT PROPERLY. AND THAT’S WHEN THE RESEARCHING KICKED OFF, AND IT BECAME MORE THAN JUST A PASSION. I GOT INTO IT; CREATED THE CHARACTERS…I JUST COULD NOT STOP.” on the slope of the hills overlooking Beau-Vallon beach. My father, Marcel Tirant, was a police officer, whilst my mum, Maryse Tirant, was a housewife. WHAT WERE YOU DOING WHEN YOU WERE HERE? I started my working life as a nurse at the then, Victoria Hospital, in 1975, followed by a career in the hotel industry as a Front Desk Manager, and later as an Assistant Manager at Denis Island. Soon after, I started running my own business which specialized in ladies’ wear, called ‘Elegance’ in market street, Victoria until 1995, when I emigrated to England. WHY DID YOU LEAVE SEYCHELLES? I needed a fresh start after my divorce, and I had

20

been travelling considerably with my previous job so settling into another country did not prove too challenging for me. TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR FAMILY. I have two grown up sons, Eric Morel, who is the Diving Instructor on Denis Island, and David Morel, who lives in the UK with me, working for a solicitor’s firm in West Sussex. I also have a young granddaughter - Anna Morel, who’s now four years old. I absolutely love being a grandmother. I now live in the small village of Cuckfield in the countryside of West Sussex with my wonderful husband, Stanley Longhurst. WHEN DID YOU DECIDE YOU WANTED TO WRITE A BOOK ABOUT THE SEYCHELLES? Whenever I would come down for holiday, I perceived the many changes that had occurred while I was away, and that would make me melancholic. I’m not against progress, but it is also heartwarming Photo credit: Suzanne Verlaque

SEYCHELLOIS OVERSEAS

Rosie Tirant-Longhurst

SEYCHELLOIS OVERSEAS

to remember the Seychelles the way it used to be. Seychelles is so small and sometimes when you go away, and then come back, you expect it to stay the same. So I thought, what better way to try and preserve this for myself, for my children, and my grandchildren than by writing a novel, so that in the future there will still be something tangible to show them how the Seychelles used to be like. Writing itself found me, so I thought if I’m to write something, I should do it properly. And that’s when the researching kicked off, and it became more than just a passion. I got into it; created the characters…I just could not stop. It’s funny, but as I write about my characters and the suffering they go through, it feels as if I am going through the ordeals with them, and sometimes I even bring myself to tears, or get lost in their world. WHAT IS THE TITLE OF YOUR BOOK? It is entitled, ‘Echoes from the Oasis.’ I used ‘Echoes’ because it talks of the past and ‘Oasis’ because the Seychelles is like a haven. The focal point of the story centers on Anna, and elucidates the Seychellois traditions and culture in the indicated year. A time where men were more dominant and woman had no special place in the society. They were to stay at home and await marriage. Anna here is illustrated as this young woman who wants to do more than what she is ‘supposed’ to do with her life. She’s a passionate, nature-loving, and rebellious young woman who has to face the confining fate of her Catholic future. The novel also shows women of different social classes, from the plantation workers to the Bourgeoisie, and still portrays them as being under the subjugation of the men in power. SO WOULD YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF AS A FEMINIST WRITER? No, not really. I am simply rewriting history as it occurred, and merely retelling it from the perspective of a woman who went against the norm of the society. The story not only retells history, but it also explores the exotic beauty of the Seychelles. “I started my career as a nurse, and the protagonist in the novel is a nurse…she is also called Anna, which is my middle name.” WOULD YOU SAY YOUR CHARACTER ANNA, EPITOMIZES YOU AS AN INDIVIDUAL? There are bits and pieces that I have taken from my own life, even if it’s taken me years to do a lot of research before attempting to write anything. Even if most of the characters are fictitious, and my novel is a work of fiction, I have brought so much of our history and way of life into the story. It includes a reasonable extent of historical fact, thus why it took me a while to make sure that I had everything down, from the right dates to how it all happened. I am writing to preserve the old way of life, and I do believe that writing is a great way to immortalize - A People- A Culture - A Nation. SO WHY DID YOU WANT TO START THE STORY IN THE YEAR 1912? The idea of doing that is to allow future books in the series to bring the Seychelles to the present age…hopefully. “Seychelles is my passion - part of my soul.” Those past 19 years away from the island has caused a yearning and nostalgia, which more or less incited the creation of this novel. In the story, I’ve gotten Mother Nature to appear like some sort of imaginary character that protects the Seychelles. To her, we are this pet project which she puts in the Indian Ocean, and bestows us with beautiful flora and fauna, especially the coco-de-mer, which she calls her creation. But then years down the line, men come, and all the evil that sometimes accompany men comes in the form of slavery, and that really hurts her. I also talked about how the Catholic Church helped the slaves by baptizing them in the Catholic faith and giving them some form of identity - something to belong to. DID YOU FIND IT CHALLENGING TO GET YOUR BOOK PUBLISHED? I sent my manuscript to the publishers and got a ‘yes’ within a week. I was not expecting that, because I know you have to expect a lot of rejections before you can get a book published. But maybe I got lucky. There are not many novels that have been written about the Seychelles, hence maybe why they thought my novel was a noble idea. ARE WE GOING TO BE READING ANYTHING MORE FROM YOU IN FUTURE? Actually, I’ve already started on another book which is to be part of this sequel. ‘Echoes from the Oasis’ start in 1912-1914, and the one I’m currently writing will continue from there and show how things changed. I feel so privileged in getting the opportunity to do this, but my biggest regret is not being able to share this achievement with my parents; they would’ve proud of me. DO YOU EVER THINK OF COMING BACK TO SETTLE IN THE SEYCHELLES? My husband’s English, and I’m happy in England. I have my son and granddaughter there as well. So in a sense, I guess I’ll have to think of myself with two homes. Maybe one day I might come back (I don’t know what the future holds), but for the moment, I’m thinking England is going to be our home. We don’t always have the nicest weather, especially in winter times, but I love it there. SO WHEN/WHERE CAN WE PURCHASE A COPY OF YOUR NOVEL? I should be getting it published and printed by December 2013, and I’m hoping to have a few copies sent here at the Antigone book store. I will also be giving 5 free copies to the National Library, and the book will also be available on Amazon. I’ve managed to get quite a lot of publicity for my novel here, and I’ve been so lucky with the whole process, that I will be donating 20% of my profits to charities and good causes in the Seychelles, the UK, and worldwide. Editor’s Note: At the time this issue goes to print, the dedicated website for the novel, http:// www.seychelles-author-in-cuckfield.com/, indicated that due to festive season delays the novel was to be released early in 2014.

By Elaine LaFortune Clara Leite, a working mother with two beautiful sons who loves to look at interiors and think of ways (as she puts it), “to decorate and change the ordinary into something extraordinary”, tells POTPOURRI how she is inspired by the colours around her. “I build on them to accentuate living spaces. My shop, Cards & More is a good example.” While we are reminded that her shop is largely her hobby, Clara finds herself rather busy with her work, as well as with keeping care of her two boys, although she often reckons she “could be doing more.”

What made you decide to venture into the business world?

“Keeping busy is part of my genetic make-up. I have been involved in several businesses (a total of twenty years); either in retail or in the car-hire business. So it’s been a passion for a while and I love to see ideas not only put forward but also work.”

How long has it been since you set up your greeting cards business?

“We are now well into our second year. Our first full year was on the 3rd of September 2013. Cards & More was set up initially with my sister. We had this idea some years back but we decided to wait and see. Unfortunately and due to her other activities, her own business and family, we decided that it would be best for me to go into it alone. The business is now mine and my son’s, Laurent, who helps out. So it remains a family affair.”

Your main focus is selling cards, is it not?

“Greeting cards are part of the business approach yes. However other items are meant to complement the greeting cards so that gifts and cards support each other!”

With the emergence of email and text messages reducing the market for greeting cards, why did you choose to sell greeting cards?

“Indeed emails, electronic cards and text messages are quite common now and do occupy a large ‘chunk’ of what people do these days. However our thinking is and with the special cards that we have, Hallmark greeting cards, and later in addition more special local made greeting cards we know that it is and remains more special for someone to receive a quality greeting card. So there is room and our customers appreciate very much the ‘old’ school approach and taking the time to send a greeting card either hand delivered or by ‘snail’ mail, via the post office. It is indeed much more special!”

BEHIND THE BUSINESS

Breaking into the Greeting Card business with Clara Leite!

“…OUR CUSTOMERS APPRECIATE VERY MUCH THE ‘OLD’ SCHOOL APPROACH AND TAKING THE TIME TO SEND A GREETING CARD EITHER HAND DELIVERED OR BY ‘SNAIL’ MAIL, VIA THE POST OFFICE. IT IS INDEED MUCH MORE SPECIAL!” Aside from greeting cards, what else do you sell?

“We have a range of items from special scented candles, incense, costume jewellery, watches, and other interesting items for consideration and gift giving. Some of the items as well are supplied by Hallmark, rounding out what is available.”

BEHIND THE BUSINESS

What do you think are the qualities/criteria needed to make a business successful? “Passion is tops. Then self- discipline and patience are next in line as far as I am concerned. Customer service is the key; and offering something which is not always readily available in many outlets but that is needed.”

How different are your products to that of other similar outlets? What makes yours stand out?

“I like to think that we offer a personal touch that communicates positively to our customers. It’s not always that we have what they are looking for, but even then, just getting to know what they are looking for and recommending somewhere else if we know where, shows that something extra. Plus we have organized our shop with cool comfortable colours, well placed with an always friendly feel. This is very important.”

You say that you provide quality products; please enlighten us on the quality products that you bring in. Where do you do your purchasing?

“We do specify quality because indeed they are. We have a great working relationship with some of our main suppliers, Hallmark and Avon.” As the leader of the greeting card industry, Hallmark leaves its mark on more than just cards. Today, Hallmark products can also be found at tens of thousands of retail outlets domestically as well as online. “We work closely with some key suppliers in the UK and the USA. From time to time we do find some interesting items locally. We have great working relationship with them as well.”

Since you deal in quality products, how affordable are they to the customers? “This is the key! Quality need not be EXPENSIVE and we are for sure a right fit for all our customers with moderate and reasonable prices for what we have on offer.”

What do you see as the biggest challenge for business entrepreneurs today?

“It’s tough out there with much competition. Prices for shops, what is available, location are very big challenges for entrepreneurs for sure. Providing a quality approach in total (from product to be selected, pricing, how our shop looks, the service that we give) is in itself a challenge. Marketing as well is important so that we hit the right target group. In our case this is not a specific target but rather open to all.”

What have been your biggest challenges in setting up the business?

“Financing…we used our own. Also trying to find a location. Not just any location. The right one. Getting the word out… are all very big challenges which remain for sure.”

What have been your best moments?

“The positive interaction with my customers, especially the recurring clients! It’s great to get feedback from them and to help them select what they are looking for. Great sales on a particular day are as well ‘best’ moments!”

What is your biggest selling item?

“Well cards sell well for sure, followed by costume jewellery. What we have complements the buyer for they are carefully selected.”

Are your clients mainly locals?

“For sure local customers make up the bulk of who we do business with.”

What do you think encourages the fair amount of repeating customers? “Our approach…which is one of warmth and caring. It’s not a gimmick but a genuine approach that I have.”

“ALL OUR FRIENDS ON FACEBOOK RECEIVE 5% OFF ON OUR ALREADY GREAT PRICES; SO ALONG WITH EVERYTHING ELSE WHICH INCLUDES A SPECIAL ORDER WHICH HAS ARRIVED FROM HALLMARK JUST IN TIME, IT IS CERTAIN THAT WE HAVE SOMETHING FOR THOSE WHO ARE SEEKING A SPECIAL SOMETHING FOR THEIR LOVED ONES FOR VALENTINE’S DAY!” What are the means by which you market your cards widely? Do you have a website? Do you do any online promotion? “In general we have had adverts in selected newspapers to include some contributed articles. As well, we have been now for the past two Christmas seasons in a shopping guide which comes out for Christmas. Shortly we will have a few spots on the television and have been airing one of our commercials on the BIG screen which is located in downtown Victoria above the post office. Of course now we are in your very popular magazine! As for a website and online promos, we do online promotions via our Facebook pages. A website perhaps will come next but we need to think about it.”

How do you foresee your business in the next five years?

“We are looking three years ahead! So in year four, I will have to come back to you on that one.”

Valentine’s Day is round the corner. What do you have on the offer especially for the occasion?

“Yes and it’s going to be a very special day! Already our shop is decorated with hearts and we are ready as of now. We have a special ‘hearts’ corner where our customers can easily select special Valentine’s cards from Hallmark, along with special Hallmark wrapping paper for those gifts we hope that our customers will select and purchase from us. PERSONALITY SPECIAL

Felicity Passon

An insider’s view with Seychelles’ best female swimmer who’s making her mark while dreaming of the Olympics By Elaine LaFortune

Felicity (in pink) in action at the last World Championships in Barcelona in July/August 2013

At only 14, record-breaker Passon has won the heart of the locals with her performances. Can she now write her name in the history of the country’s Sports Awards? The young starlet, Felicity Passon, born in Dubai to Seychellois and German parents, left her country of birth at the age of 5, to start her journey on the beautiful isle of La Digue. YOU’RE LIVING ON MAHÉ NOW. HOW DOES THAT COMPARE TO LIVING ON LA DIGUE? “I like La Digue because it’s such a relaxing place, and I love the beaches there, but here on Mahé, it’s different, as there are more things to do, places to go, and besides, all my friends are here.” Do you ever go back? “Yeah! But now it’s harder to go as often as we used to because of my training.” WHEN DID YOU START SWIMMING? “My parents always told me that I was in the pool since I was about 10 months old, but I really started to learn how to swim at the age of 3. I was able to jump in the pool on my own by then. I started training properly when I came to Mahé (as La Digue offers no facilities for swimmers). Exswimmer Naomi Adeline used to help me with my swimming when I was still living on La Digue.” AND YOUR FIRST COMPETITIONS? WHEN DID THEY START? “These started as soon as I had completed all my stars which all swimmers have to go through; but I was still not that serious about swimming then. It was Sir Paul Fanchette who scouted, and saw potential in me, and I was asked to join his team. From then on, I took part in small competitions held by the SSA (Seychelles Swimming Association).” WHAT’S THE HARDEST PART OF YOUR TRAINING? “Waking up in the early morning before school to go and train! It is really hard! We have early trainings on Saturdays as well, and sometimes when I’m through, I don’t even have the energy to go hang out with my friends… all I usually want to do is go home and sleep...but I do try to make time for friends and family.” AT YOUR AGE, IS IT EASY TO FIND THE RIGHT BALANCE BETWEEN YOUR SPORT AND YOUR STUDIES? “It’s hard to juggle my swimming and my studies. I want to go far in swimming for sure, but obviously education is for the rest of your life. I’ll be doing my IGCSE’s soon, and right now I find it rather tough to balance the two, but I’m hoping I will be able to cope.” YOU’VE GONE INTERNATIONAL FOR COMPETITIONS. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE COUNTRIES YOU’VE PARTICIPATED IN, AND WHAT WERE YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS IF ANY? “My first international competition was in Mauritius, where I won two medals…a silver in the 50m butterfly, and gold in 100m butterfly. It wasn’t an organised competition by the SSA, but an initiation by my coach who thought it would be profitable for us to participate in such a competition. The second one was again in the region, in Reunion Island, in 2012. Then it was the World Championships in Turkey, where I swam in the 25 metre pool.” HOW DIFFERENT WAS THE COMPETITION IN TURKEY COMPARED TO THE REGIONAL COMPETITIONS? “It was really tough because I was obviously swimming with the best. We weren’t expected to reach the finals, but we were just hoping to do our best times, which I successfully managed to. I was so nervous because it was my first time participating in such a big competition.” Felicity also took part in the fifth ‘Jeux de L’espoir’ which was held in Mauritius, where she was a four-time gold medalist in 50m butterfly, backstroke, freestyle, and breaststroke, as well as winner of the best

female swimmer trophy. Passon’s second national record came in August 2013 when she was ranked 49th out of 60, with a time of 30.46 seconds in the 50m butterfly at the world swimming championship in Barcelona, Spain. “I’ve also won for two consecutive years, the title of ‘Best Female Swimmer’ based on my performance and points accumulated at the SACOS National Open Championships in June 2013”, Felicity remarks. Felicity continued on a roll in the ‘African Junior Swimming Championship’ held in Lusaka, Zambia where she snatched second and third place in the 100m butterfly, and 50m butterfly event subsequently, in what she’s confident is her best stroke. I BELIEVE YOU’RE ENJOYING YOUR BREAK FROM SWIMMING AFTER A BUSY AND REWARDING SEASON? “Unfortunately…no! I have an upcoming competition in Reunion.” Now with her first Youth Olympic appearance squarely within sight, the 14-year old swimmer is hopeful that her arduous training will be part of a bigger purpose. Ms. Passon has already been selected to compete at the ‘Youth Olympics Games’ in Nanjing, China in August, 2014, and she’s being optimistic that she can qualify. Felicity also tells us that she is equally looking forward to participate in the forthcoming ‘Jeux des iles.’ SO TELL US…HOW IS SWIMMING IN THE SEYCHELLES? “I don’t get a lot of competition here, especially for my favourite stroke (butterfly) as not many swimmers like it. I have to rely on international competitions to showcase my ability. Obviously it’s a lot tougher when you go to training camps in other countries, but I find it rather useful. We don’t have the best scoreboards here to mark the time, and the water is hot, that is why I tend to do better when I swim elsewhere, because the water temperature is colder, and it makes you swim faster. But on the whole, the spirit of the sport is good.” WHAT’S YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL IN THIS SPORT? “To train really hard so I can accomplish my dream in making it to the Olympics!” DO YOU HAVE ANYONE SPECIFIC WHO INSPIRES YOU? “I don’t really have someone per se, but I look up to a lot of the young Olympians who have won gold at only 16. They are my real inspiration, and I want to be just as good as they are one day.” THE SEYCHELLES SWIMMING ASSOCIATION (SSA) HAS NAMED ITS BEST SWIMMERS FOR THE YEAR 2013, AND YOU HAVE BEEN NAMED. HOW DOES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL? “I feel really honoured to have been chosen as the female swimmer of the year! I think I deserve it as I’ve been working really hard. I’ve been doing well both on international and home soil, and I just want to continue to do well to maintain the title by making my country and my family proud.” Editor’s Note: At the time of this interview and going to print, the Sports Awards 2013 had not taken place. POTPOURRI wishes Felicity all the best!

The Professionals’ Choice with Dulux Paint! By Elaine LaFortune Planning to start afresh in 2014 with a fresh coat of paint on your walls? Looking for the perfect colour? You’ve come to the right place! In every aspect of our lives, from the homes we live in to the clothes we wear, we’re surrounded by inventive, original and imaginative use of colour. With the heritage of Dulux rooted in colour, we’ve decided it’s time to recognise the talent which makes the world a brighter place. The Dulux brand has given new meaning to the words ‘fresh paint’ with the unveiling of its 2014 paint trends forecast. The colourful palette is filled with rich, invigorating hues that represent renewal and refreshing change, says Mr. Payette. “We’ve been graded number one because of the consistency and quality of the paint.”He also reminds us that Dulux gives a 10 year warranty on all its paints…making it the more reliable. People are starting to let out their collective breath and are ready for new beginnings, which is transforming into a movement towards fresh and creative colours. “We want to change people’s perspectives into using different shades as well as unexpected combinations of colours in all areas of home décor and move past the painting of a room merely with a touch of white paint.” With Dulux paint, colour becomes more than just decoration, but a method, a tool and a design in its own rights. Five star hotels in the Seychelles are moving along with this new trend because they want a paint that can match their standards. Mr. Payette says that “withDulux paint you’ll finish your project in half the time, as it thickens as it dries.”

Our Products We’ve made sure that whatever decorating needs you have, we have the right product for the job. Whether it is the bathroom, bedroom, shelves or fences, our paints and preparation products are designed to meet the needs of your home.

Colour That Suits Your Space Colour has the potential to become one of the most fundamental elements in your home. You can use colour to brighten up your mood, make your space look larger or smaller, or reflect more light. It can easily identify personal space for you and your family at home. For the interior, you could utilise colours already existing within your furnishings and accessories. This can make a great starting point for transforming your home. We are retold by Denis that with Dulux paint, you can find the perfect colour to suit anything from your sofa to your curtains. “Our paint palettes can help you find your closest colour match and we can give you some suggestions of great schemes to go with it.If you already have a colour scheme in mind, you can sample a potential colour at home where you’re planning to use them. The same colour can look different in different rooms, in different light and even of different surfaces.”

What’s Your Style? What sort of style are you looking for in your home? Contemporary, Traditional or Modern? This also helps you to define the colour palettes you should begin with. Not only do you have choices in colour, you now also have options with textured or metallic products. So you see… the sky is the limit.

Choosing Colours All the colours are arranged by hue so you can quickly choose the colour you want. The amount of natural light a room receives will dramatically affect the density of a colour. Rooms that receive little light will appear lighter with lighter shades of colour (e.g. whites or neutrals). Neutral colours create a sense of personal space and simple sophistication for all types of interiors. Rooms facing east and west receive a great amount of light (and may feel very warm) will suit the cooler palette of colours.

Dulux Natural Hints Silk Dulux Natural Hints Silk is a range of subtle shades, inspired by nature and designed to bring a touch of colour to your room.

Dulux Exterior and Interior Dulux Exterior Paints offer unbeatable protection for exterior surfaces against the worst that the weather can throw at it.The outstanding range of interior paints will keep your walls, windows, doors and trim looking beautiful.

The minute you think of lace you think of seduction, femininity, glamour and innocence all in one. Of course it depends on how much lace the piece carries and its colour to determine which description is more ‘dominant.’ Yes, we have come a long way from the days when lace belonged on the back of porcelain dolls and trimmings on lingerie. They are now part of most fashion items from dresses, to hats to bags. The best way to have lace make a modern fashion statement? Leave the predictable aside and surprise yourself with colour, a funky finish or pair it with something that will get people going ‘I would have never thought that would look so good...’ If your eyebrows are still raised at the idea of venturing into the lace world, kick start the lace adventure with small lace accents into your wardrobe. A touch at the sleeve, neckline or hem is just the right amount of sexy. For daytime and office wear, remember to pair lace up with structured pieces (like tailored pants) to tone down the sweetness.

My number one fashion rule...

Simple is beautiful. From your make up to jewellery and clothing, you can never go wrong with simplicity.

Celebrities which top my ‘best dressed’ list... Angelina Jolie. I think she elegantly displays the concept of less is more beautiful.

Favourite item in my wardrobe...

I have this pair of dangling earrings I bought from Monsoon accessorize in Manchester 8 years ago and I am still wearing them every now and then.

My favourite place to shop...

I would say places rather; Dorothy Perkins and New Look to top the list. I like their dresses, shoes and summer outfits.

Preference for high heels/flats or sneakers girl...

More heels that flats. I actually wear more often the mid-heels which I think can still be quite classy if you shop carefully. I am definitely not a ‘sneakers’ girl as I only wear them for exercise and that is because I have to!

My favourite designer...

Gucci. I simply adore their watches and handbags.

A definite NO-NO is...

Wearing trainers at the office unless it is a sports day, which in this case you should not have on any office wear!

A good fashion sense means...

Knowing how to pick the right pieces that would look good on you for the right occasion and right audience…or whomever you are picking it for.

Revenge fans love Emily Thorne. It’s very hard not to. She’s beautiful, focused, soft-spoken and can kick butt. And then, there’s her wardrobe. She has the ability to make the simplest outfit look elegant. Something has to be said about the actress who plays her, Emily VanCamp. There is without doubt a parallel in the dress sense of the two Emilys. Here she is on the red carpet in the ‘Diane von Furstenberg Lace Dress Zarita’ looking as glamorous as can be. TOE RINGS with Ms Jules

Toe rings are not the first fashion idea ‘borrowed’ from the east (and probably not the last either). While in countries like India, toe rings have cultural significance, in the rest of the world toe rings are worn to make fashion statements like most of other types of jewelry. Toe rings are popular in Seychelles especially amongst young women. Given that we live on an island and spending time on the beach is very common, having a toe ring on does wonders in making feet in the sand pretty and feminine. Let’s face it, our feet are usually the last body part that gets any attention and pampering them are too often, after-thoughts. It’s not surprising given that most of the time; they’re hidden away in shoes. But even then, with sandals or open-toe pumps, our feet are exposed and waiting to make a statement. There are no rules in wearing toe rings. If they were to be categorized, they’ll be on the ‘fun’ jewelry list. And fun, well, you can go to town with fun. A couple of things I would say you watch out for are the type of metal of the ring; as always try and get any jewelry bit from established jewelry stores. Also, do ensure you know the dressrules of where you are heading. Toe rings might be on the ‘not allowed’ list of certain establishments. Unless, you wear a toe ring for religious reasons, it is not advisable to break a rule to make a fashion statement. I’m just saying.

Toe rings general facts • • • •

Usually worn on the toe next to the big toe. Usually. Can be worn on both feet. More than one on a foot though can look crowded. Unless that’s your style. Silver toe rings are best. Silver gives off a youthful and refreshing feel. Above or below the ‘padded’ bit of your toe? TOTALLY up to you!

New Year, New You? Could cosmetic surgery be the answer?

By Jennifer Baldwin It’s a new year and in our image conscious society, many of us have already pledged dramatic self improvements for the body beautiful, be it a new fitness regime or a healthier diet. For an increasing number of men and women however, cosmetic surgery instead, is being seen as an easy, viable option when it comes to fighting the ageing process and improving their appearance. There are many surgical enhancement procedures to treat different areas of concern, including the following:

FACE & NECK

A facelift has become one of the most requested procedures. When creams are no longer helping and botox and dermal fillers can only do so much, then a face lift, brow lift or neck lift can help to make you look younger.

EYES

Eyes are often the biggest giveaways of age. Dark shadows, sagging eyelids and bags can add years to your appearance and make you look tired and run down. Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty can open up your eyes and remove loose skin.

NOSE [RHINOPLASTY]

If you are unhappy about the size or shape of your nose then a “nose job” or rhinoplasty can help restore the balance and proportion to your face.

BREASTS

If your breasts are too big, too small or too saggy, they can have enormous impact on your self confidence. Breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic procedure but bigger is not always necessarily better and the popularity of breast reductions and breast lifts has grown significantly over recent years.

“UNDERSTAND THAT COSMETIC ENHANCEMENT CAN IMPROVE YOUR APPEARANCE BUT IT CANNOT CHANGE YOUR LIFE”. BODY

Getting older, extreme weight loss and pregnancy can also result in fat which cannot be reduced by diet and exercise alone, accumulating in certain areas. If you want to get rid of excess areas of fat and skin, there are certain procedures such as liposuction or tummy tuck to help achieve the results you desire. There is no doubt that skilled cosmetic surgery can result in a positive impact on someone whose body image may have been tied to a negative focus on a particular feature or body part. However, the industry is also rife with horror stories of botched procedures leaving patients distressed and regretting their decision for surgery. The choice of undergoing cosmetic surgery should never be made casually and before embarking on your search for a qualified surgeon, there are several areas that should be addressed to ensure that you are making the right decision. • • •

38

Choose to enhance your appearance because you want to and not because others are influencing or pressurising you. Peace and happiness does not rest with surgical enhancement. Ask yourself what you hope to achieve because if there are other

negative aspects in your life, surgery is not going to be the magic solution that makes everything else better. Be realistic about what you want to achieve, don’t look for radical results and don’t expect to change who you are as a person. Understand that cosmetic enhancement can improve your appearance but it cannot change your life. Accept that the results of your treatment may be permanent and different from your expectations so you may have to live with them for the rest of your life. Understand that surgery comes with potential risks and that no result is guaranteed. Ensure that your physical and emotional health is stable and that you are not being treated for any chronic health disorders or serious mental health conditions.

Be sure that you can afford all surgery costs including time off work for the recovery period.

Finally ensure that you choose a certified, reputable, experienced cosmetic or plastic surgeon. Bargain surgery is never a risk worth taking. All surgeons have their specialities and you need to research in depth before making your final choice of surgeon.

If any of the above raises any concerns, think seriously about postponing any procedures until you are ready. Jennifer Baldwin has worked in the fashion and beauty industry in several countries

Ombré Hair Color Do’s and Don’ts We can’t help ourselves when it comes to imitating celebrities and their styles. They are afterall, trend setters and the red carpet is the canvas for us to decipher what’s next on our make-over list. Jessica Biel, Miley Cyrus, Gwyneth Paltrow are just some of the many names who have ventured down the ombré hair style path. And for good reason. When done right, ombre hair can look natural and sunkissed – VERY refreshing and youthful. If you are considering going down the same path, here are a few tips for you to bear in mind to ensure that you get it right! 1.

3.

AVOID GOING OTT Keep drastic elsewhere. You do not want black and blonde. This is not the place for opposites. The difference between the two colors should be subtle, natural looking, and change from one color to the other gradually.

MAINTENANCE; NO TWO-WAYS ABOUT IT Unless you want the look for just one event (or for a short holiday period) – you have to bear in mind re-growth and that at some point colour also fades. You may be able to get away with only a few color touch ups a year, but you do need to remember to keep up with those salon appointments so your color looks fresh. You will also need to take steps to ensure your hair is well nourished so your strands stay healthy.

2.

4.

THE RIGHT SHADES Getting ombré hair is definitely the time to get a consultation with your hairdresser. Most ombre hair styles have the person’s natural hair as the darker shade. Regardless of whether the darker shade is your natural colour or a colour you chose, opt for shades not more than 4 times lighter for the lighter part. This will keep the balance between the two colors as flattering and as natural looking as possible.

PROFESSIONAL IS BEST This is not experimental territory. It’s two colours so get it done right! If you don’t have the time, perhaps ombré hair is not for you in the first place…

If you choose to go for an ombré hair color, make sure it is the one that best suits your personality and lifestyle. All are fun to try and easy to maintain with a little creativity and quality hair care.

VIEW FROM THE STATION

THIS WAY TO YOUR HIGHER SELF The beauty of living in virtue By Jenny Gilbert

A

ccording to Wikipedia “Virtue is moral excellence, a positive trait or quality deemed to be morally good and thus is valued as a foundation of principle and good moral being. Personal virtues are characteristics valued as promoting collective and individual greatness. For me, Virtues are values that promote conscious living with spiritual qualities that the human soul possesses and uses to attain connective and individual enlightenment, without which vibrant health and well-being is simply not viable. It is hard not to relive my own healing experiences which have been central to my understanding of how we heal. I remember that my homeopath and mentor never judged or remonstrated

42

FEBRUARY 2014 | POTPOURRI

FOR ME, VIRTUES ARE VALUES THAT PROMOTE CONSCIOUS LIVING WITH SPIRITUAL QUALITIES THAT THE HUMAN SOUL POSSESSES AND USES TO ATTAIN CONNECTIVE AND INDIVIDUAL ENLIGHTENMENT, WITHOUT WHICH VIBRANT HEALTH AND WELL-BEING IS SIMPLY NOT VIABLE. Without wishing to infringe on anyone’s sense of morality or personal values, and much like my mentor, I came to use the same intuitive tools to seek out values that were not being honoured in my patients and learnt to rely on this information in helping them to heal themselves. The objective is always to enable one to find the ‘virtue’ that is not being honoured which dominates their sense of uneasiness or, should we say, dis-ease. I learnt that when I follow this pattern religiously, results come easily. And I have devoted several years to refining a healing system I call VIRTUES to provide a very simple means by which we can consistently bring into balance our well-being by honouring our virtuous self. The system of VIRTUES in healing calls upon various modalities and tools involving energy, body work, breath work, colour, scent and sound, meditation and yoga to effect deep healing. However, simply thinking about one’s value system is a great start for anyone seeking balance and harmony in order to attain wellness. So how can we embrace a more virtuous lifestyle to protect ourselves and keep ourselves in good mental, emotional and physical health so that we can prevent dis-ease and live a more vibrantly healthy life? Life has become so crazy with new challenges and opportunities presenting themselves too fast for us to even take a breath. With this fastpaced existence comes an almost paralysing complacency; we tend to move through life without truly paying attention to our thoughts, words or actions. Mostly, we can hardly find the time to even think about our value system but whether we like it or not, we are constantly reminded about it through little symptoms and situations that pop up to keep us in check. If we ignore these symptoms it generally means that we are not honouring the values that we believe deep down to be necessary to our well-being. Complacency or neglect of our value system almost always results in dis-ease in one form or another. Living in VIRTUE brings us into a more conscious state of being in our ordinary living by making slight adjustments. Through small, but repeated daily considerations of what makes us feel valuable as we move

through the day, we start to open ourselves up to our innate value system so that we can steer our journey towards a more harmonious destination. So, if we start each day by bringing our awareness to just one Virtue that is important to ‘promoting collective and individual greatness’ just that momentary consideration could change the way our day proceeds. Instead of simply waking up, having breakfast, driving off into the world to do what you must do for the day, take a moment to reflect on one value that is important to you. Think about how you could best honour that virtue for the day and do your best to bring that into how you relate to your family, your colleagues and friends throughout the day. Apply the value to your thoughts, your spoken communication and to your actions. It might be a little challenging at first but soon you’ll find yourself feeling better in ways you cannot imagine. The point is not to take this too seriously but to lighten up your life through a little conscious work. Sooner than later, once you get the rhythm going and move into a more ‘virtuous’ space in the universe, you will notice that the more you live in virtue, the lighter you will feel at your core and the better your health and well-being will be. My gift to you this year is to give you a programme to help you work towards a more virtuous you in 2014. I kick-started “A View from The Station” this year with an article about de-cluttering your life in order to prepare you for the journey. It’s now time to start inviting in real gems of information that won’t clutter but enrich your life. Starting today, have a look at the daily VIRTUES chart and start applying the VIRTUE shown to the day shown. This should be fairly simple. If today is Tuesday, then start considering your state of GRACE. Think about what grace means to you and consider how to be more gracious and graceful throughout the day. Let this be your gift to yourself. As I write this article I am aware that today is Wednesday and that means HUMILITY at The Station. Today I will be as open in my communication as possible. As I move through my day I will talk gently to those around me, allow everyone to be heard and talk less than normal. Instead of instructing my staff, I will ask them for their opinions. Because today is Humility I will honour the greatness in everyone around me, how they add to my life and how I am less without them in it. I might even tell them that. I plan to go into our factory and actually make some products myself today so that I can teach the factory staff one or two things that I take for granted. I will listen to their concerns, give them a voice and make them important. Today I will consciously think of myself in a state of Humility, honouring my virtuous self. Even for a few minutes, this remembrance of my higher self will bring peace and harmony to my life, the people who cross my path today and to the wider community. Whatever your take on Virtue is, living up to your more virtuous self will immeasurably enhance your quality of life. Give it a shot and have fun doing it. If you forget one day, pick it up the next. Create a routine, live up to your higher self and watch yourself transform. For a printable chart of the daily virtues that you can stick on your fridge or in your diary, go to http://www.thestationseychelles.com/the-virtues.htm

with me about my habits, belief system or ill-perceived ideas. In fact we never spoke about living values or virtues and she was never moralistic. Instead she listened and guided me towards finding what was missing, confused or upset in my life. Always my discomfort or dis-ease had its roots in the way I felt about myself and translated directly into which value was either in or out of balance in my life. While homeopathic remedies did the work to unblock barriers prohibiting me from seeing the real picture, a gentle renewing energy would start flowing through me, awakening my vital healing force to a new understanding of myself as an individual. And what I came to recognize over the years was that when my state of ‘virtue’ (value system) dwindled, I would not feel well. Homeopathy enables one to feel better in one’s skin and, as I have learnt, brings into consciousness the values that we are neglecting which are pivotal to our happiness, health and well-being.

Better Living LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Love. It is a subject that always comes up this month every single year. It is a moment that love is celebrated around the world with Valentine’s D being the highlight of the month. Love is broadcasted everywhere but have we really ever asked ourselves what the meaning of love is? What I find most fascinating is that even though love is something that is universal across the world the definition slightly changes across continents, countries and cultures. In western society love is defined as having strong feelings of affection towards another, or having a great interest and pleasure in someone else as well as a warm personal attachment for a person. Sometimes the definition is extended to sexual passion or desire. On the other side of the globe in eastern countries the definition of love is simpler: It is simply wanting others to be happy. This definition of love very much roots from Buddhist teachings where love is unconditional and it requires a lot of courage and acceptance (including self acceptance). The opposite of love is wanting others to be unhappy with feeling of anger and hatred. The “near enemy” of love, or a quality which appears similar, but is more an opposite is: conditional love or what we most know as selfish love. Attachment is always a debatable subject. For some love means feeling attached to another and not being able to live happily without having our loved one by our side. However in other societies the one feeling that needs to be avoided in love is attachment as it disintegrates the very definition of love. I want to share with you what someone recently taught me about love when I asked the question what is really the meaning of love? Love is an energy. Connecting with people instantly send an energetic cord from your body to the other person. A connection does not necessarily need to be physical but as simple as a positive thought towards them. This means that love was not necessarily a feeling as I always associated it with. Love is not just loving one particular person but love is free and it is an energy that moves wherever you direct it. Love is not selfish, love is not bound, love is not possessive, love is not jealous. Love is being able to detach from the person you love, setting them free if that is what makes them happy. Too often do we try and hold on to people just to satisfy our personal need. Love is not preference, but love is equally distributed. I found it hard at first to grasp this concept because I always thought that to love someone whether it is family, friends or partners it is something that takes times and

With Célia Ponzo “AT THE SAME TIME I WAS TOLD THAT ‘I LOVE YOU’ THAT EVERY INDIVIDUAL SPEAKS TO EXPRESS THEIR LOVE TO ANOTHER WAS PUTTING RESTRAINTS ON THE TERM LOVE. THE WORDS ‘I’ AND ‘YOU’ WERE LIMITING LOVE TO JUST TWO PEOPLE AND LOVE IS SO MUCH GREATER THAN THAT. INSTEAD WHEN I FEEL LOVE TOWARDS ANOTHER I SHOULD SPEAK THE WORDS LOVE LOVE LOVE AND MORE LOVE AS THE WORD BY ITSELF IS UNLIMITED.” builds up through connection, experiences, trust and gestures. Instead I was being told that love is too great to be just limited to close people in your life. I needed to be honest that I never thought about loving a stranger the same way I love my family and partner. I realised it is the definition of love that I had grown up with that stopped me from thinking this way. What I learned is that love is a feeling that resides within you, it is part of who you are and if you release it from its captivity then you will feel love for all, the world, nature, people and those things which you thought you could never love. The feeling is so overwhelming that you cannot resist its beauty and energy it just stirs within you and you cannot help but expressing outwards. At the same time I was told that ‘I love you’ that every individual speaks to express their love to another was putting restraints on the term love. The words ‘I’ and ‘you’ were limiting love to just two people and love is so much greater than that. Instead when I feel love towards another I should speak the words love love love and more love as the word by itself is unlimited. I thought this was so beautiful that I needed to share it. If everyone would express their love this way surely there would be less conflict and restlessness in our world today. Love to all.

Cupid’s Arrow The month of love is here! What better way to start than with a sensational smoothie filled with aphrodisiacs for you and your loved one *wink wink*. This month’s smoothie is made up of fresh coconut water, all natural greek-style yoghurt, honey, vanilla essence, figs, beetroot, strawberries and blackberries. Coconut water is not just a refreshing drink with health benefits, the electrolytes present in it increase body metabolism and blood flow, so it can be served as an aphrodisiac to boost your mood. Figs are also one of the most potent fruit aphrodisiacs out there today, the flavonoids, polyphenols and antioxidants are concentrated in this fruit, which help put you in a euphoric haze to prolong sexual desire and love making. Adding a few figs to your smoothie will take it from a refreshing beverage to an erotic libation.

Mili’s Valentine’s Day Smoothie Ingredients:

Bananas are also aphrodisiacs, behind that slick peel, the slender banana’s fruit is packed with nutrients essential to sexual hormone production, including potassium and vitamin B. Beetroot is known as Nature’s Viagra, it has been found to contain high amounts of boron, which is directly related to the production of sex hormones. In many cultures the belief persists that if a man and a woman eat from the same beetroot they will fall in love. This is the perfect drink to enjoy on the couch while watching a romantic movie with your sweetheart after work, before heading out for a romantic dinner. It’s easy to make and takes no more than ten minutes. For those of you who don’t have a date this year, no worries, this smoothie will give you the right energy to go out and meet someone special. Don’t sit around moping and feeling sorry for yourself, put on the sexiest outfit in your closet, and get out of the house. Valentine’s Day is in your favour this year as it falls on a Friday! Now isn’t that wonderful... There will be plenty of single ladies and gentlemen out there and who knows maybe you’ll meet someone special.

8 Strawberries 16 Blackberries 5 Figs 1 Beetroot 2 tablespoons of Honey 2 teaspoons of Vanilla Essence 2 tablespoons of all natural Greek-Style yoghurt 300-400 ml of fresh Coconut Water depending on how thick you like your smoothie.

Method: • First make sure to wash all your fruit and vegetables • Peel off the top of your coconut with a sharp blade and pierce a hole through it, then pour it into a measuring jug until you have the amount you need. • Put strawberries, blackberries, figs and beetroot into your juicer until all of it is turned into a thick creamy texture. • Add the Coconut Water, Greek-Style Yoghurt, Honey and Vanilla Essence and stir. • For a better effect put the result into a blender to thoroughly mix the ingredients together (Optional) • Serve with plenty of ice and enjoy! Feel the electrolytes from the coconut water dance on your tongue :) To see a video of the making of this smoothie please check out ‘Mili’s Valentine’s Day Smoothie! ‘ on my Youtube Channel > http://www.youtube.com/user/Milidoux/videos

Grown men cry? Q:

Dear Annalisa, I always cry at funerals – even if I don’t know the deceased. I recently attended a colleague’s mother’s funeral and had to leave the church because the tears couldn’t stop flowing. What’s wrong with me? Roger, 52

A:

Dear Roger, “What’s wrong with you crying”? Nothing. Crying is a normal behaviour, it is an overt behaviour to be precise, which means a behaviour that is open and can be observed by others. Behaviours are not stand alone actions and unlike popular belief, behaviours are not directly triggered by any particular event per se. That is, you are not crying simply because you are at a funeral, because as you say, it happens even if you don’t know the deceased. So what’s really causing your tears to flow? For that, let’s turn to the A-B-C of behaviour. A B C

Activating event - what is happening Beliefs – what you believe about the event and what you are thinking about Consequences – how you feel and how you behave

Plainly put it, there is an activating event, you are attending a funeral (A) and you cry (behaviour- C). Now crying is generally attached to such feelings as sadness or hurt (sometimes even anger). So there, already you know you are not crying (directly) because you are attending the funeral but rather because you are experiencing an unpleasant emotion or feeling. A feeling (C) precedes the behavior (C). Now as you recite your alphabet you know there’s really no A-C but A-B-C. The B is the key link to A and C, and the same is true to every event and behaviour. B is your belief about the event, the thoughts you have about the event. You are crying because you feel sad/hurt not because of the funeral but because of your beliefs and your thoughts about the funeral (e.g., it reminds you of someone close you lost, you think of attending someone close’s funeral, you think of your own funeral, you think of something painful in your life; you think it’s a safe place to cry without being question (I don’t really know your thoughts or belief here). This is an exercise you will have to do. Examine what your belief and thoughts are when you are at a funeral and therein lies your answer. There’s nothing wrong with you crying, but find out what you are really crying about or for and work from there if need be.

About a bully Q:

Dear Annalisa, The first five times my five year old son mentioned ‘Alvin hits me,’ I shrugged it off. Then he came home with a pale bruise caused by Alvin at which point I started asking questions. He tells me Alvin is his best friend but hits him sometimes. I should take this up with the school right? Priscila, 33

“NOTE FOR THE FUTURE: AT THE INITIAL REPORT, STOP AND ASK QUESTIONS THERE AND THEN”.

A:

Dear Priscila, I believe you have a one-extreme-to-the-other kind of approach there. From shrugging it off to taking it up with the school. It is clear to date, that your son has not been able to take control of this situation himself. However, is it the best time to jump in as a parent or is there time for teaching of new skills? Have you explored his abilities to deal with the current situation? Can your son be equipped to deal with “Alvin who hits” by himself? Can he be taught about reporting to adult/teacher? Note for the future: At the initial report, stop and ask questions there and then. Without making too much fuss, find out what happened and how he reacted. Comment on some of the best options of dealing with someone who hit; e.g. walking away, reporting to the teacher or any other adult, not hitting back. It’s also excellent opportunity to teach about friendships and peer relationships. Find out “What is a friend? What is a best friend? How do friends behave with each other? What makes a best friend?” It is also an excellent opportunity to teach assertive behaviour to our children. As the most socially skilful behaviour, assertiveness training involves teaching children to stand up for their rights in a friendly, polite manner that does not hurt the feelings of others. On a personal note, I believe in empowering our children and allowing them to learn by experience. I believe that helping our young children make wise decisions about friendships now, would allow them to carry such wisdom into adolescence and beyond.

To The Dentist By Nathalie Hodgson

D

entists recommend that you bring your baby to them by their first birthday, or within six months after their first tooth come through, whichever comes first. I had been meaning to take both my eldest child (now three), and youngest to the dentist for some time now, but perhaps it was my fearful childhood memories driving my procrastination? Although I have only had one filing in my life, my sisters were not so lucky. During a particularly uncomfortable visit, one of them kicked the dentist, resulting in the whole family being expelled, and banned from returning. Maybe it’s the machinery, or that plastic smell, or the gag reflex that is difficult to control that turns you away, whatever it is I was determined not to instill those fears into my children. I want them to be comfortable with their visits, and know that these trips will ensure they will have healthy teeth for the rest of their lives. I was more frightened than my children, cringing as we walk into the waiting room. The kids were thrilled to see a fish tank, and table and chairs filled with books and toys. Three weeks beforehand I had made sure we were reading ‘Elmo’s Visit to the Dentist’, and ‘Barney Goes To The Dentist’ books every night before bed. I had also bought them new toothbrushes to excite them about brushing time, and made up a new song while they brush (it’s the AAA, EEEE, OOOO, sung really loudly to get each section brushed). By the time the day came, the kids were ‘psyched’ to go get their teeth nice and clean. Our dentist was a trained pediatric specialist, and she knew her stuff. Her room was covered in butterflies, posters of Disney characters and balloons. She had ‘Shaun the Sheep’ playing in the background, and gifts over the top of her desk as farewell treats. She was a professional. The kids automatically felt welcome and happy, but I was still nervous.

After the check up, the news was given: my son was all clear, but my daughter had a minor cavity. I was in shock. How could this happen? I am very strict with what they eat, and they only eat sweets/treats on special occasions. They have a very balanced diet, and I never give juices or sweet drinks. And then it hit me. It was her bottled milk. Although she has a big appetite, she was still having milk three times a day. The dentist then explained how cavities are formed. Sugar leads to cavities, and sugar is present in more foods than many people realize, such as fruits, juices, milk, and breads. These stick to teeth, especially anything chewy (like candy, soft sweet bread, dried bananas, etc…), as they are not washed away with drinks or saliva. Even though fruits are good for the health, they also contain natural sugars. The overall message was to reserve sugary and sticky foods to meal times when they will be washed away by drinks, and limit sugary snacks during the day. Although my daughter’s cavities were not severe, if not treated in time it may cause ulcers and other severe orthodontic problems. If a baby tooth is lost too soon due to decay, the surrounding teeth may shift, and permanent teeth may grow improperly. She received extra fluoride treatment as a boost for fighting the cavity, and we were asked to return for another two checkups every three months for monitoring. Teeth are the only living cell structures in the body that when damaged can never heal. She advised me that she can only stabilize the cavity to ensure her teeth continue to grow nicely and fall out as they should. Her adult teeth will not be affected in any way. A sigh of relief. She then pointed out some general dos and don’ts for parents: 1. Only use a children’s toothbrush – especially designed for kids with soft bristles, and easy handles. 2. Small amount of toothpaste – ingesting toothpaste can be harmful, so if you can, use an all natural product, and if not, make sure the child spits out the remaining amount. Make it fun to gargle and spit. Do not use toothpaste until your baby is two years old. 3. Floss – try as best you can, especially in the evenings, or during the day after eating. Floss sticks maybe more fun for the child, and parents need to floss for the younger children. 4. Visit the dentist every 6-8 months – twice a year is recommended to remove plaque buildup and spot minor problems. 5. Don’t forget to brush behind your front teeth (this is where my daughter’s cavities were). 6. Brush their tongue – this is important for oral hygiene (especially since they cannot use mouthwash). 7. Never put your child to bed with anything other than plain water in his/her bottle (rather no bottle at all so gums and jaws can have a rest, and the child has a more peaceful sleep). 8. Try and get them to stop the habit of thumb sucking, and encourage your child to drink from a cup (or a sipper cup) from their first birthday. 9. Don’t scare them with the ‘ if you don’t brush your teeth, we’ll have to go to the dentist’ line. After thank you, hugs, farewell gifts, and much sound advice, we proceeded to make our way home. Feeling extremely guilty and knowing that the outcome could have been more severe, I was grateful that they enjoyed the visit. Not every visit may be as fun however, I will try my best to make it as pleasurable as possible. As an imperfect person and parent who makes mistakes on a daily basis, I vowed to myself silently that I would not let my own inhibitions and fears stop me ever again from prioritizing my children’s health. Happy Parenting!

A SWEET GREEN Valentine’s Day!

February is that time of year when our thoughts turn to our sweethearts again. Valentine’s Day is a very popular holiday with most age groups, and it inspires a great flurry of cards and gifts, and not to mention miles and miles of wrapping paper, that eventually end up in the environment. Many of the traditional gifts and celebrations associated with Valentine’s Day– those heart-shaped boxes of chocolate, the romantic, four-course, meals, and that bouquet of roses– usually come at the expense of our environment. Like many holidays, its celebration can create unintentional environmental side effects, such as the consumption of natural resources and the generation of solid waste. While celebrating romance and showing love to other fellow human beings, we can also show love for planet Earth, and other non-human species that inhabit it. Here are a few tips.

“SO, WHEN CELEBRATING VALENTINE’S DAY THIS YEAR, REMEMBER, EARTH NEEDS LOVE TOO!!!”

Perhaps the most popular way to celebrate the day is sharing a romantic dinner with your sweetheart. Many people show love by preparing a home-cooked meal. Why not prepare a home cooked meal using locally grown, seasonal produce?

Many of us think of a bouquet of roses as an ideal present to offer our loved one on Valentine’s Day. It’s a very thoughtful gift, and can be sustainable if we choose local varieties of flowers grown by local florists. These flowers have a lower carbon footprint and are grown with fewer fertilizers and pesticides, and when you buy them, local businesses are also being supported.

Send an e-Valentine in lieu of a paper Valentine to minimise the amount of waste produced. If sending a paper Valentine, be certain to send one that is printed on paper containing recycled content, or make your own. Don’t forget to recycle Valentines you have received that you aren’t keeping, if you are really into paper cards!

And, instead of using wrapper for your gift that will later be discarded, why not just offer up that box of chocolate or that teddy bear as it is, with only a ribbon or flower to add to the romance? Ditch the wrapper, it ends up on the landfill later!

DINING

Le Bourgeois

Fisherman’s Cove

Taste Reigns Supreme The intricacy of nouvelle cuisine doesn’t get in the way of taste and satisfaction at Le Bourgeois at the Fishermen’s Cove, writes RJ Williams There are kitchens where haute cuisine can be so obsessed with process and presentation that the flavours turn out even lighter and more dainty than the dishes themselves. Not one of those kitchens: Le Bourgeois at Le Meridien Fisherman’s Cove. The team at this upmarket eatery at Bel Ombre’s 5-star institution in Northwest Mahé has managed to put together a range of dishes that, based on at least one sampling, offer much more than just a pretty plate.

DINING

The Locale Secluded in the far corner of the Fisherman’s Cove grounds, right along the water’s edge of Beau Vallon Bay, Le Bourgeois is the upscale a la carte alternative to the resort’s buffet restaurant, Le Cardinal. It’s isolated away from the main hotel concourse, providing a secluded, romantic atmosphere with an elegant combination of decor and lighting. The crashing of waves from the ocean and trickling of water in the surrounding ornamental pools bordering the dining area make for an intimate dining experience to treat a loved one, or a quiet setting to impress a business associate. Le Bourgeois boasts a style of contemporary cuisine that employs many wide-ranging influences of Creole cuisine with a variety of classic European techniques. Maximising the experience means going the full three-courses, and the kitchen prepared a special set menu for us to enjoy in this fashion. Service was prompt and friendly, but also allowed enough time for us to savour each finished course, letting the anticipation creep back in for the next.

memorably way – perhaps because they leave you wanting more than the minor portions they typically offer. But the main course we enjoyed at Le Bourgeois served to hit all the flavour marks of an intricate starter while also, to put it crudely, filling our bellies. The pan-fried red snapper, served on a creamy risotto with shellfish and saffron foam, took honours as the most satisfyingly flavourful dish of the night. It was equal parts delicate and bold, the perfectly cooked fish lending precision and subtlety to balance the punch-you-in-the-face flavour of the risotto. Despite the hearty portion, the law of diminishing returns definitely did not apply for this dish – we enjoyed each bite with the same fervour as the first, and had we been at home there might have been tongue-on-plate interactions wholly unfit for a 5-star restaurant. Dessert was not far behind, both in sequence and in the pecking order of our favourites. The final course had a multitude of flavours, and just the right amount of depth and richness to follow on from the red snapper. Set on a flat slate, the dessert was a three-tiered tower, with a scoop of passion fruit sorbet at the top, a chocolate mousse in the middle and a coconut mousse at the bottom. The sorbet was a fitting palette cleanser before moving on to the richer layers – another example of the thoughtfulness going into the individual components of the dishes. Each layer was separated by a wafer of dark chocolate to offer some bitterness to balance out the sweet. And sliced strawberries were the perfect accompaniment to add some freshness to round out the dish. To say we washed it all down with a few glasses of a brilliant chardonnay would not be doing the cuisine near enough justice. But for such a seafood-focused menu, the wine recommendation from the chef could not have been more apt.

Starter

In the Beginning After we were served with a selection of freshly baked breads (including a wonderful focaccia), we found before us the amuse-bouche, a sliver of smoked salmon rolled around a centre of cream cheese spiked with orange. It was a sign of good things to come. The starter, a trio of just-cooked scallops with an orange emulsion scattered with almonds, was an exercise in contrasting flavours and textures. The sweet scallops, sharp orange, creamy foam and crunchy almonds went down a treat. The scallops might have used a little more char, but that also could have been intentional to leave the natural seafood flavour intact.

Dessert

For Next Time

Main Course

Main Street For this writer, rarely does the main entree in a meal of several courses come away as the dish I remember most fondly. Starters and desserts can often steal the show as they have a habit of punctuating a meal in a more

While our special three-course dinner was off the menu, there were plenty of dishes on the menu that caught our eye as well, such as the crab panache starter with fruit in Takamaka rum, or the lobster cappuccino soup flavoured with cognac. Main courses like the pan-fried duck breast in a peach and port wine sauce, and desserts like the mille-feuille of fresh figs with mascarpone and vanilla coulis, or the chocolate fondant with red capsicum and strawberry, also piqued our interest. Traditional favourites like fillet steak, lamb chops, a selection of risottos and other classics dot the menu as well. With the price of a typical three-course meal for two ticking past the R2,000 range, a dinner at Le Bourgeois is much more likely to make it into a weekly eating-out repertoire for those with much deeper pockets than mine. But for a treat on a special occasion, this is one eatery where you can ‘splurge’ in the relative safety of knowing you’ll be heading home having treated your taste buds to something out of the ordinary.

Stand Up Guys starring Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin

Possibly the strangest ‘feel-good’ movie that I’ve ever seen, Stand Up Guys really caught me off guard. I expected a heart warming comeback story about some old mobsters who’ve seen the error of their ways and chosen to leave their criminal pasts behind them. Instead, I saw a movie about 3 semi-retired gangster buddies who decide to have one more bash at the fast life, stealing cars, shooting other (younger) gangsters in the knees and rescuing beautiful women. The best part? None of them ever say “I’m getting too old for this”. While it isn’t the most brilliant film I’ve seen this year, it was definitely a breath of fresh air.

Film of the month The Wolf Of Wall Street – Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill Dir. Martin Scorsese Films like this are the reason I’m a movie geek. Allow me to paint a very small, rough picture for you; You’re sitting at home with a choice of 3 films to watch. Tired and unable to concentrate after a long day at the rodeo, the sensible you says ‘Pick the easy one. It’s only an hour-and-a-half. You won’t have to think about it at all’ (For the record, ‘the easy one’ would be something like The Wolverine). You pull your shoes off slowly, so as not to rip open the fresh blisters on your tired, tired feet and you sink into the couch but just as you recline, something digs into your hip. You reach back and pull out The Wolf Of Wall Street. In at 3 hours play time, boasting a multi-faceted true life story about fraud, tax evasion and countless other moral transgressions, this is not the film you need to be watching tonight. But there’s something about the glimmer in Mr DiCaprio’s eye that whispers ‘Just do it. I’ll be with you the whole way’. So you do it. You throw caution to the wind, forget about the fact that you’re a member of the walking dead who has to be up and perky in 6 hours and you press play. Then your life changes forever. You realise that you’re not just watching a film about Wall Street. You’re on Wall Street. There’s no desire to have the money that the film’s characters have because you’re there, spending it with them. This film isn’t about Jordan Belfort or the FBI Fraud Division. This film is about you. Do the smart thing. Watch it tonight. If that’s not your thing: Check out the gritty war-drama ‘Lone Survivor’ with Mark Wahlberg

Chet Baker – Chet Baker Sings I’m going to be a bit unorthodox here, as my album of the month isn’t a new release, but something that came out in 1956. The reason I’ve chosen an album from a bygone era is because I just rediscovered this gem and after speaking to a few friends about it was surprised to find that not many people here have heard much of Chet Baker’s music at all. A jazz trumpeter from quiet old Oklahoma, Mr Baker recorded this masterpiece over the course of two years and, because of his impeccable credentials as a horn player, managed to get some of the best musicians around to help him out. Both technically flawless and emotionally riveting, Chet Baker Sings was way ahead of its time and still remains a favourite amongst musicians and audiophiles everywhere. From the happy-go-lucky bounce of the albums opening tune, ‘That Old Feeling’ through to the understated beauty of ‘My Funny Valentine’, this is the perfect album to have playing in the background while you sip red wine by candle light. Girl/Boyfriend: Optional. If that’s not your thing: Listen to Beyonce’s self-titled R’n’B release

This time, 10 years ago... Kanye West – The College Dropout If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard someone say ‘Kanye’s music is alright but he’s so arrogant’ or ‘I can’t listen to Kanye’s new album because he’s just so full of himself’, I would be a very rich man. But forget money - I’m rich already, thanks in part to the 6 studio albums Mr West has given the world. You see, I’ve never understood why people deprive themselves of what could be an enlightening cultural experience simply because they don’t like an artist’s attitude. If you had to have him over for dinner every week, I would understand. You don’t. You have his music and the things you read in magazines and see on youtube. Now when I listen to albums as good as The College Dropout, Kanye’s first studio offering, I can’t help but feel sorry for the folks who choose the media’s representation of the artist over his musical self-representation. In my humble opinion, this album is ground-breaking today. The fact that it was released a decade ago makes it one of the most unparalleled feats of artistic genius since Cyndi Lauper released Time After Time. If you disagree because you don’t like the music, fair enough but if you never gave it a chance because of what he did to Taylor Swift, get over it and listen to this album.

How long has it been? Three years? Three years since the divorce devastated Jill’s family and left her and her daughter Megan in pieces. Taking away his two daughters Abby and Victoria after ten years of being one unit, William stormed out never to be heard from again. But now life seems good. She is to be remarried to the man who finally makes her truly happy. He’s the father thirteen year old Megan always deserved, her job as a pediatrician pays well, her suburban home is all she ever wanted and her future seems finally ideal. But when Abby shows up at Jill’s doorstep, bringing news of her ex-husbands death, can she ignore the young girl’s plea for love never forgotten? Can she turn her back on those she raised despite all the lies and cons that got in the way? Nothing and no one can stand in the way of a mother determined to protect her children, not even the danger and threat that led to her ex-husband’s demise! Yes, this book is about the undying love of a mother determined to help the girls who will always have her love despite their father’s abrupt departure. I found this book sort of conflicting because at times I felt for Jill and her want to take care of Abby and later her curiosity at finding out the true identity of the man she once thought she knew. But sometimes I felt that she was going too far with her investigations and was just putting herself out there instead of focusing on her present and new future with Sam. But then it’s back to wondering what will happen if she abandons her newly orphaned ex-stepdaughters. This book is really beautiful in that the raw emotions felt by Jill are so powerfully conveyed to the readers and we are always left to sympathies with her because of the dilemmas she face. The element of mystery is very persistent in the novel. Throughout the story there seems to be a threat following Jill around in a black “pa-diddle” SUV. Every now and again it reappears adding a little bit more to the need to finish the

FEBRUARY 2014 | POTPOURRI

book immediately, to find out the truth about the shadow threatening her life. Seeing Jill and Sam’s happiness at the beginning of the story was so very heartwarming but when they get into their very first dispute over Abby, I have to admit it was pretty heartbreaking! I understand that Sam was ready to take on Jill and her lovable Megan but wasn’t at a point in his life where he wanted to take on the extra broken family as well. But they were so perfect together that I wanted to keep reading just to make sure that they got back together in the end…but whether they did or not is not something I’m going to spoil for you! The author definitely takes us on an emotional rollercoaster as we try to keep up with the drama of a woman who has too much love to give. It definitely emphasized how infinite a mother’s love is and how powerful the bond of family is. Life isn’t a fairy tale where everyone gets a happy ending, but it takes courage, patience, understanding and lots of love to be able to get where we want to and to protect those we want to keep safe. What I found really interesting is that with a lot of books the chapters tend to drag on too many pages and I find it tiring to read after a while but with this book, the chapters were short and to the point and helped the book to flow really smoothly! It was definitely a breathtaking ride until the very end! I have however read a few reviews whereby some people thought the book was too soft and the love was a little too much for them to handle but that’s understandable as everyone has their own opinion! If you’re not too interested in the emotional aspect of a book and are searching for something more thrilling which goes at a faster pace then maybe this one is not for you. But I for one will definitely be looking out for some more titles by this author! By: TheMadBookBlogger http://madbookblogger.wordpress.com/
