Bare On the Ridge: Fighting Fire with Fun Bare on the Ridge (BOTR) has been enhancing fire safety on the Ridge since 2007. Until this year, all funds have gone to staff to yearly vandalism repairs of Sawmill Peak Lookout. But big changes are afoot with new security measures and camera technology, which provides 360 degree, 24/7/365 fire detection coverage, including infrared imaging capabilities for night monitoring. BOTR stages three major fundraising events each year: a bowling event in February, a fashion show in April, and a golf tournament on August 22. All funds are dedicated to the purchase of the camera system. Donations can be sent directly to BOTR, P. O. Box 883, Magalia, 95954. Many thanks all who have supported BOTR’s fundraising events throughout the years; your continued support is appreciated. I’

m very pleased to be part of the Paradise Chamber of Commerce. I’ve been in real estate for ten years now and I know that the stability and vitality of a community rest mainly on two things: home ownership and business, especially small business. It’s the home owners who have the deepest roots in a community. I’ve rented and I cared about my community, but as a home owner I’ve got a bigger stake in it. Skin in the game, as they say. I think the same is true for business. Big business is like a renter. They want the area to succeed but they don’t have the roots that small business has. Our local small business owners love this area where they work and live. So this year I decided to get involved with my local Chamber of Commerce and see how I can encourage our business owners. Real estate has been a super plus for me. I

have a busy life but I do whatever it takes to represent my clients well. I don’t care if it’s a $5,000 mobile in a park or a $500,000 luxury home, my clients are people, not property and I have made a ton of friends in this career. I laugh because some of my friends now were my pickiest clients. I encourage a certain amount of pickiness because whether it’s a sale or a purchase, real estate is a huge decision. I love my business mainly because it touches lives so deeply. Touching lives is what brings us here today. When I was approached by the Chamber about a ribbon cutting I was hesitant until the magic words “Chocolate Fest” were mentioned. People who know me know I’m very involved with my community. Charities, especially children’s charities, are close to my heart. It’s why I’m on the Leadership Board for the Boys and Girls Club and it’s the only reason I’m running for Chocolate Queen. It’s not about me. It’s about the kids. Let’s face it, we don’t live in Beverly Hills and our kids need the help they get from local services and charities. So please check ChocolateFest.Us and ParadiseChamber.com for upcoming events. King and Queen candidates are selling $10 raffle tickets for a gas card with a chance to win $250. Oh, and please sign up for the Fun Golf on April 18. If you ever wanted to smack a golf ball this will be the time. It’s just for fun and we’ll have a nice dinner and music afterwards. Bring your friends. I’ve invited other candidates to come and pitch their events too. Please take some time to attend the Chocolate Fest events that will offer such hope for our kids and such a lot of fun for us. Thanks again for being involved in our community.

Water Conservation Help for Restaurants and Hotels Local water restrictions mean businesses need to save water, too; Paradise Irrigation District has free printed materials for Ridge restaurants and hotels to assist them in decreasing their water use. PID’s board voted in April to enact wise water use guidelines including the requirement that restaurants must not supply a glass of water unless the customer requests it. Additionally, hotels and motels must offer guests the option of no daily linen/ towel service. Free attractive table tents and cards are available from PID to help Ridge business owners meet those requirements. Call PID at 877-4971 to request yours. Chocolate King and Queen candidates Patty McKee, sponsored by Century 21 Select Real Estate; Chuck Rough, sponsored by Joy Lyn’s Candies; Dina McSpadden, (co-owner of The Screen & Window Shop) sponsored by Rotary Club of Paradise, Caitlyn Hardiman sponsored by Rabobank, N.A. and Dylan Dutro sponsored by Darlene’s Fine Chocolates and Ice Cream. The Paradise Chocolate Fest is presented by Youth on the Ridge Community Foundation. The Fest will be held Saturday, May 9th at Terry Ashe Park on the Skyway in Paradise from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. F0r details and related events, see pages 7 and 8 and online at ChocolateFest.Us. Chocolate King and Queen candidates are community members who raise funds by competing for votes for the coveted “Chocolate Royale” title. Each dollar raised is a vote, resulting in the coronation of a Chocolate Fest King and Queen for the candidate who raises the most funds to support children’s services and charities on the Ridge. This festival is fun for all the participants, allowing kids to see that service equals funding, just like the jobs they will have later in life. Funds are distributed to the organizations in proportion to the amount of hours the kids and their supporters donate working at various events. Each year the community businesses provide sponsorships to support the overhead of this charity. This means that every penny raised by the candidates plus other business sponsorships go directly to the organizations that support and serve children on the Ridge. Please support our children by having tons of fun at our events. See related events on pages 7 & 8, or call 518-5155 for all event details.

Banners Decorate “Destination Downtown” Destination Downtown Committee

T

he Destination Downtown Program aims to improve the overall appeal of the downtown in order to enhance the economy, promote private investment and engage public excitement. Through promotion, events, design and infrastructure, the Town of Paradise and Destination Downtown Committee members are making strides to revitalize the downtown area into a destination for residents and visitors. Be a part of this exciting effort! Businesses and residents not only benefit from this program, but may participate as well through events held throughout the year and sponsorship of planters, benches, and banners. The Downtown Paradise Banner Program kicked off at the beginning of April with Gold Nugget Days banners. Seventeen banners are located on Skyway, Foster Road and Pearson Road. This is the first of six banner programs planned for 2015. The banners are 5’ high by 28” wide with the top four feet dedicated to event promotion and the bottom foot for sponsor recognition. According to Destination Downtown Committee member Jim Broshears, owner, Trailhead Adventures, “this is a way to celebrate the great things that are happening in our community while dressing up our downtown area.”

Also serving Chico and Oroville!

The Downtown Banner Program is intended to • Identify the Downtown area • Add color and vitality to the Downtown Streetscapes • Publicize Paradise events, activities and attractions • Promote Ridge businesses Banner sponsor applicants may be any organization (non-profit or for profit) or any individual. Applicants must choose from themes and designs pre-selected by the Banner Committee.

ith the exception of a single paid staff member, Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce is operated by volunteers who love our community. We work together to make sure that the Paradise Ridge is a great place to work, play, and do business. To that end, we operate a visitors’ bureau, celebrate and support business, and stage events to showcase our beautiful mountain home. Volunteers are at the core of our organization, and work hard all year long, officiating at ribbon cuttings and open houses; staging mixers, the annual Community Recognition Dinner and Spring Shopping Fair; judging merchant Decorating Contests and
