Paradise Police Department to Welcome New K-9 By Gabriela F. Tazzari-Dineen Chief of Police
T
he Paradise Police Department will be welcoming their newest addition to the ranks very soon. The Department is in the process of purchasing a K-9 and Officer Manuel Ayala has been selected as the newest K-9 handler. The K-9 is currently being selected and will go through a five week training course with Officer Ayala and is expected to complete training by mid July, 2015. The newest K-9 will be the department’s second K-9, joining Cash and his handler, Officer John Wilkey. The K-9 will be purchased from Vigilant Canine Services International, a highly respected kennel based in Reno, Nevada. The cost of the K-9 and the training is entirely funded by donations from Paradise citizens and local community organizations. The initial cost of funding a K-9 is approximately $12,000.00. Local fundraisers and donations continue to assist with the cost of maintaining the program, paying for veterinary care, food and ongoing training. The newest K-9 will be trained in patrol operations and narcotics detection. The Department has a goal to add an additional K-9 in the future. Due to the economic challenges and the costs of maintaining a K-9 program, we would not be able to fund

The Paradise Police Department would like to thank all those who have generously contributed to the K-9 fund to make this program possible.
The K-9 unit visited residents during the summer at “Party in the Park” in Paradise. K-9 Officers conducted K-9 demonstrations, and T-shirts and sweatshirts were sold to support the Paradise Police Department K-9 program.

Preparing Ridge Youth for the Future By Sheryl Manies Special Events & Projects Coordinator Boys & Girls Clubs of the North Valley
D
o you remember your first job, the first time you nervously filled out an application or sat through an interview? At the Boys & Girls Clubs of the North Valley, we know our region’s youth face a competitive job market. Thanks to CREW, an innovative new program in partnership with the Paradise Recreation & Park District (PRPD), local youth on the Ridge received job mentoring and structured support over the summer months to help prepare them to enter the workforce. CREW (Career Readiness Empowered Workforce) is a program that blends career-based curriculum and hands-on work experience with job exploration and skill development. The ultimate goal is to build work and interpersonal skills in our teens that can lead to successfully starting and maintaining employment. This summer’s CREW program was invaluable for the youth of Paradise. Before being accepted into the program, teens attended a resume-building workshop, learned how to interview and took a class on workplace etiquette. Club members who were interested in participating in CREW were required to go through a rigorous interview process with Mike Trinca, District Manager for PRPD, and Hoppie Campos, Director of the Paradise Boys and Girls Clubs. Nine teens were accepted into the CREW program. They worked for six weeks alongside PRPD staff learning valuable workplace skills including landscape planning and maintenance and irrigation installation. The teens learned how to pour concrete during a project that created new walkways at Billie Park, installed new equipment in the dog park, prepped

CREW members cleaned the public pool and ran tests on the water, ensuring the chlorine levels were within acceptable levels and removed algae from the ponds at several PRPD parks. One day out of the week was dedicated to classroom instruction utilizing Boys & Girls Club’s Career Launch curriculum. The teens participated in workshops aimed at strengthening their career skills and learned various skill such as how to put together a monthly budget, how to properly construct a resume and cover letter, and how to strengthen their interviewing skills.

“I interviewed for CREW because there isn’t a lot to do in Paradise during the summer and I wanted to get job experience for my resume,” said Cody (15 yrs. old), Paradise Teen Center member. “I learned a lot of new things like how to pour and lay concrete, how to properly prune and cut bushes, and landscaping skills. I learned how to work and get along with others, even if they irritate you. My favorite day was when we repurposed a slide tube from Billie Park for the dog park and then got to watch the dogs play on it.” Upon completion of the program, youth from the Paradise CREW program participated in a collaborative graduation ceremony with Chico and Oroville CREW participants. Each teen received a Cer-
tificate of Completion awarded to them by PRPD and the Boys & Girls Club. Families, friends, and town and city representatives (including Paradise Town Council Member Woody Culleton) were on hand to recognize the teens for all of their hard work. Our inaugural CREW program in Paradise was a huge success. The teens worked tirelessly to complete their assigned projects, helped maintain the beauty of our community’s parks, learned valuable skills, and above all walked away from their experience with an increased sense of self-confidence. The Boys & Girls Club looks forward to their next CREW partnership with the Black Bear Diner, starting Tuesday nights in October.

The Rotary Club of Paradise was chartered in 1946 and has over 75 members from the business, professional and retired sectors of our community. It meets every Thursday noon, at the Lutheran Church on Skyway. A dedication of the STEM Lab will be held Saturday, September 26, 12- 2pm with tours of the facility and refreshments provided by the club. Pine Ridge Women’s Club The non-profit Pine Ridge Women’s Club was formed in 1980 to provide support for local charities and scholarships for local youth on the Ridge. The money raised from annual events helps support these entities. To date, this small club has given $30,000 to local charities and over $60,000 to deserving students. This year’s “Fine Wine and Brews” fundraiser will be held on November 7 at the Paradise Elks Lodge and will feature wines from local wineries, beers from local breweries, vendors, drawings, and great hors d’oeuvres. Cost: $20 per person. PRWC meets the first Tuesday of each month at the Paradise Pines Property Owners’ Association, begining with a social at 11:00am. Visit www.pineridgewc.org for more information. Better Days for PPAC In 2006, Paradise Performing Arts Center’s mortgage was more than $700,000 and additional debt was accumulating. Despite various attempts at remediation, debt mounted and in 2009 the PPAC Board of Directors contemplated bankruptcy, closure, and sale. A gift from the will of Jenny Jensen provided some relief and a more conservative business model was instituted by the Board of Directors. PPAC became a rental facility with the operation of the venue undertaken by volunteers and the members of the Board. Thanks to donations from individuals such as you, the mortgage is now less than $200,000.00. The PPAC Board’s goal is to pay off the mortgage by the end of 2017. Your donations through Annie B’s are supplemented with a percentage grant from North Valley Community Foundation; thus your generosity is multiplied and will help accomplish this goal! To donate, make your check out to: Annie B’s/Paradise Performing Arts Center. Mail your check to: North Valley Community Foundation, 3120 Cohasset Road, Suite 8, Chico, CA 95973. Donate online at www. nvcf.org. Deadline September 30. Exciting events coming up! Check out the PPAC website at www.paradiseperformingarts. com
