They were honored and thanked for their service by Mark Thorp, and then greeted the crowd of appreciative guests. Paradise Rotary provided bar service, and Billings Photography was on hand with a photo booth.
Generous donations from local businesses, as well as the baking skills of our Board of Directors, helped to offset the cost of the event. Silent auction donors, too numerous to mention, provided products and services not only to showcase the bounty of Paradise but to offset the cost of the event and to support the Chamber’s work in enhancing the culture and environment of the Ridge.

aradise Ridge Chamber’s Annual Installation Dinner hosted a sold-out crowd at the Paradise Ridge Senior Center as community members were recognized for their service and accomplishments. The occasion welcomed new and returning Chamber board members working to enhance the culture and environment of the Ridge. Past President Jay Cooke of Professional Mortgage Associates passed the gavel to incoming 2018 President, David

Our new president thanked Paradise Chamber Executive Director Monica Nolan for her tireless and visionary leadership, and Membership and Events Coordinator Mark Thorp for his contagious enthusiasm and passion for the Paradise community. He acknowledged Events Committee Chair, Jill Williams, instrumental in making the event a success. President Shepler recognized the support of his Wells Fargo family, with a special shout out to recently retired Service Manager Vickie Perez for inspiring his passion to give back to the Paradise
community, and his wife Melissa, a teacher at Children’s Community Charter School, for supporting his Chamber mission. Shepler concluded by encouraging the full support of our membership and community, stating: “The more we support each other, the stronger we will all be. As a member…certainly there are many benefits, but for me-it’s not about what I get, it’s about what I give. It seems the more I give, the more I get in return. I try to live by this philosophy: “Life is not about avoiding bruises, life is about collecting the scars to prove you showed up for it!” I am very optimistic about what this year holds for the Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce. Daffodils Across the Ridge

hile writing a gardening column for the Paradise Post, the concept of a town wide gardening project took shape in my mind. It was a seed that was planted, but never germinated, until I heard of the Daffodil Project in New York City—a city wide project to plant daffodils to serve as a memorial for the tragedy of 9-11. When I returned to Paradise, I began to envision my own daffodil project as a way to bring beauty to the entire town. A friend, knowing what an avid gardener I was, presented me with a photo of a sign that read, “To Plant A Garden, Is To Believe in Tomorrow.” Little did I know when I was given the gift that it would become a mantra to carry me through a struggle with cancer. The sign was always there encouraging me to do something in my garden each day. I knew I would have a tomorrow, because I was planting a garden. Slowly I recovered my health, and it was during this time that I saw the many daffodils planted at a business on the corner of Skyway and Elliot in Paradise. My vision began to take shape. In January 2008, I was named chairperson
for the beautification committee of the Paradise Garden Club. Shortly afterwards, the daffodils on the Skyway began to bloom. In my mind, I could see them blanketing the town in a mass of yellow blooms. I approached the club with my proposal to plant 3,000 daffodils in the Town of Paradise as the beginning of an ongoing project that would bring warmth to the soul after a long and often dreary Ridge winter. While my vision was in its infancy, the town was devastated by the Humboldt Fire. Many of the club members were evacuated, and saw their friends and families lose their homes and all that was near and dear to them. When we gathered together to share our feelings about the destruction, I brought along my sign, “To Plant a Garden is to Believe in Tomorrow.” From this sign we adopted the motto for our project. The vision was no longer just to bring warmth to the soul after the dreary winter; it was also to bring hope for the future. If we can plant a garden of daffodils, there will be a tomorrow. To date, my vision for 3,000 bulbs to be planted the first year has grown to over 100,000 bulbs, financed by the Paradise Garden Club and community support. While the vision for “Daffodils Across the Ridge is mine, credit for making the concept a reality goes to the diligent efforts and undying support of the daffodil committee, the faith of the garden club members who elected me Beautification Chairperson, and enthusiastic response of the entire community. During the seasons that I took on the task of planting the many bulbs I often wondered why I was doing all this work, sometimes in the wind, rain and even snow. But with each spring comes the reward. The cheerful blooms blanket the community as a symbol of hope for all to share. The project was my dream but dreams are a thousand times better when others can share them. I was recognized as Paradise Elks Club Woman of the year for the project.

Tourism grants available to local organizations

Marketing Opportunities for Local Businesses
On January 1, 2018 Explore Butte County began accepting applications for a “Zone Marketing Grant Program” that grants funding to organizations demonstrating that they will promote tourism to Butte County. Funds will be distributed based on specific jurisdictions within the County that the applicants self-select during the application process. The board will be reviewing applications for a variety of tourism-related initiatives including projects, special events, seminars and collateral creation that increase the marketing reach of Butte County to potential visitors. Applications will be accepted through March 31. Interested parties may apply for the funding by visiting www.explorebuttecounty.com/ zone-marketing-grant/. The San Francisco Chronicle will publish a travel section, March 18, 2018 to exclusively promote Butte County as a destination for travelers. EBC’s board of directors voted unani-
mously to designate marketing funds to this project; content for 4 pages will be sponsored by EBC while the rest of the section will consist of editorial content written by the San Francisco Chronicle. A digital “story studio” and a digital ad package, all promoting events and activities special to our area, are included in the project. The County of Butte initiated regional tourism planning efforts in 2013 with support from all local jurisdictions. Explore Butte County (EBC), the 501(c)6 non-
profit organization, was established in November 2015 to oversee the management of the Tourism Business Improvement District (TBID) funds. The TBID collects a 2 percent assessment fee from tourists—or $2 for every $100 spent on lodging. Explore Butte County is managed by a board of directors comprised primarily of Butte County lodging property representatives. The TBID’s main purpose is to promote future travel and highlight amenities of participating jurisdictions, including unincorporated Butte County, Chico, Oroville, Paradise, and Biggs, with an ultimate goal of growing regional tourism resulting in increased economic spending within the region. As someone with experience working and volunteering locally, both in the for-profit and non-profit sectors, I am strongly aware of the Chamber’s role as a community builder across sectors. The Chamber represents the voice of businesses and organizations in the community and I am looking forward to working with all of our Chamber members to make the Ridge

Gary Bess, PhD
Gary Bess Associates For 25 years, Gary Bess has been the owner of Gary Bess Associates (GBA), a grant writing, program evaluation, data analytics and management consulting firm that primarily works with nonprofit health and human services agencies. With 14 employees in Paradise, Sacramento and Grass Valley, GBA specializes in Federally Qualified Health Centers, as well as other agencies including homeless services organizations, behavioral health agencies, and women’s and children’s’ service programs. Gary has lived on the Ridge for 22 years with wife, Cindy Ratekin, and daughter Katie Strautman and son, Grayson Bess. He has a PhD from the University of Southern California in Social Work, and two master’s degrees in social work and applied sociology. He has participated in Chamber events through attendance and sponsorship, and hopes to contribute to the success of the Chamber by offering input into planning, resource development and promotion of activities.

Business Beautification Award Eye Life Institute By Jody Jones, Mayor, Town of Paradise
I am thrilled to give this year’s beautification award to the Eye Life Institute! David and Dana Gajda began work on their new 6600 square foot building on Clark Road in March 2016 and completed it almost exactly one year ago on January 24, 2017. They not only built a beautiful new building but they contracted with a local company, Trilogy Construction, to build it. Nine other local sub-contractors worked on this project, providing jobs in our local economy. The building was designed with the latest energy efficiencies and built with future growth and development in mind. There is space for an additional building if ever needed in the future. For Sustained Service to the Ridge Community Joan and Sam Dresser, Gold Nugget Museum By Don Criswell, President, Gold Nugget Museum Joan and Sam moved to Paradise in 1964, and during the 1970s, were among the founders of the Gold Nugget Museum. The Gold Nugget Days Committee created a museum to provide an educational service to the community, preserve the history of the Ridge, and generate a revenue stream to finance Gold Nugget Days. Sam and Joan have been instrumental in the Gold Nugget Museum’s hugely successful school programs, educating thousands of young people in the Northstate for over 20 years. Joan and Sam’s example of community service was embraced by their own family. Their children, grandchildren, and now, great-grandchildren all participate in supporting and promoting the Gold Nugget Museum. Sam continues to serve on the Board of Directors and works daily at maintaining, restoring, and creating new features on the Museum’s extensive grounds. Sam has extensive knowledge of history, mining operations and equipment; all important Museum features. Sam served on the Paradise Town Council and was our Mayor. Joan continues to serve as Museum Director, up to her elbows identifying and cataloguing thousands of precious historical artifacts and documents. The “heartbeat of Gold Nugget Museum,” Joan provides a solid, comforting base of knowledge, wisdom and good sense. Thank you to our fine friends and neighbors, Joan and Sam Dresser.

To our entire team, I’d like to say thank you for your support, and share a dandy little platitude I gleaned from an oracle called Facebook: We know you can’t do it all, but we need all you can do. It is now my honor to bestow the 2017 Ed Salome Award for service to the Chamber to Carol Peterson. Not only has Carol staffed the Chamber office for many years, but through her devotion and vision she is the guiding force behind two of our Chamber’s most valued services and products: The Ridge Business Journal and The Paradise Ridge Lifestyle and Resource Guide in partnership with Mark Orlando, owner Upstart Publishing. In case any of you don’t know, Carol is the retired publisher of the Paradise Post. We are getting ready to publish the 37 th edition of the Ridge Business Journal. In publication since 2010, the RBJ is a platform for our members, a voice for our business community, and a Chamber publication unrivalled in the County. In 2017, the Chamber produced the inaugural edition of the Paradise Ridge Lifestyle and Resource Guide to better serve our members and the community. Carol’s expertise in the publishing industry, relationships, and editorial skill are directly responsible for these products which are a source of pride for the Chamber and community. Working with Carol has been a joy not only because of her unfailingly pleasant nature and skills, but because she has taught me so much about print publications, our community, and she knows where all the bodies are buried! By that, I mean that Carol’s long history in Paradise informs her skill in the particular diplomacy required to navigate long-standing relationships and leverage connections to further our mission. With her passion, commitment and connections, Carol is an embodiment of the Ed Salome award for service to the Chamber. If I had a dollar for every time she said “I’ll do it if you can’t find anyone else” I would retire rich.

Jen moved up here from San Luis Obispo, where she had done some healing and metaphysical work with rocks and crystals. Paradise ROCKS! also double as a visitors’ center on weekends for the Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce. Her service includes supporting: SHOR, the Paradise Fire Fighters, the Salvation Army, the Make-A-Wish foundation, Rotary, and the Chico Community Observatory, to name just a few. The support from this person has been financial and boots on the ground, superhero boots in fact. She runs a thriving business, Blue Team Realty, that many people in our community use and love. She has made success possible for other people in her industry, consistently leading by enthusiastic example. She does all of these things because she loves being on the planet, and wants others to love being here, too.
