ummer brings a new season of fun and entertain- ment to the Paradise Ridge. ime: Check out the community’s “go to” for activities, paradisechamber.com/ events. Over twenty years of growth, our Party in the Park Music and Marketplace has matured into the hub of summer activity, produce, commerce, and music. Working to increase local spending, Party in the Park Music and Marketplace strives to create a friendly hometown experience to showcase our beautiful mountain abode. Party in the Park adopted the slogan ”It’s Cooler Up Here” in celebration of our fresh summer evenings under the stars and pines of Paradise. This was the brainchild of past Chamber president Max Barteau, who along with his wife, Charli, donated thousands in funds to youth programs through the Comeback Diner food and beverage concession over summers past. In honor of twenty years of community collaboration, we provide a window into the past for reflection. Our event rook root in 1997 as the Paradise Farmers’ Market and Street Fair, held at Paul Bryne Aquatic Park. Part of its mission was to connect the community with non-profit organizations, and provide a platform for fundraising. George Siler, executive director for Youth for Change, comments on the event’s conception: “Youth for Change had received some funding (a partnership with Paradise Unified School District and Butte County Department of Behavioral Health) that included a request to develop a community advisory board. the same time, KC Fowler, from Feather River Hospital, was wanting to do something similar. We joined forces and started the Paradise Ridge Community Network. We wanted to do a community event, and Jeannie Mantle from the Private Industry Council suggested a Farmers Market and it took off from there.” Vendor booths, farmer booths, and artisan/crafter booths are available: visit

paradisechamber.com and click on the “Party in the Park” banner. The free-tothe-public community concerts attract consumers to EAT, DRINK and BUY Paradise while showcasing local talent. To make it clear, there is no such thing as a free concert. It may be freeto-the-public, but Party in the Park Music and Marketplace is a labor of love from your Chamber, your Town, and

Marketing Matters! Chamber Options for Success By Mark Dale Cedar Creek

Reach more customers easily Connections and conversation.

Those are sure-fire ways to increase your business’ visibility and bottom line. But marketing doesn’t have to be something fancy—or expensive, or even difficult! Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce members enjoy a built-in marketing opportunity with their annual dues. Let’s head over to ParadiseChamber.com and see if you’re effectively using your membership to grow your business. First login to your chamber membership (Member Center>Member Login). What? You don’t have a username and password yet? It’s easy to get one: Just click the “sign up now” link and you’ll receive it via email. Once you login, you’ll see a wealth of resources, including a calendar of chamber-

focused events, the chance to update any contact information for your business, a chamber member directory, chamber documents (including logo, RidgeBucks participation information and tips for hosting a ribbon cutting event) and even sections where you can post “hot deals” for members and post jobs that need filling. To make the most of your chamber marketing, head over to the sections for company information. The site is automatically populated with your company’s basic information, but this is where you can enhance your chamber listing by adding your website, customized text and more descriptive keywords. Any changes you make will automatically update your listing at the chamber’s general website—and since that’s where potential customers go to search out businesses, you’ll have put the right information out there for them. New residents as well as long-term community members appreciate doing business with chamber members—

and this is the place for them to find you. You’ve finished with the basics at the Member Information Center (MIC), now it’s time to connect and engage with potential customers. Do you have a new product line or a new service? Make an event to promote it then submit it via the MIC and, once approved, your event will automatically be promoted on the chamber website—allowing you to reach more people than you can on your own. Want to have a special sale? Issue a “hot deals” posting via the chamber’s MIC and you’ll have members walking in your door to do business with you. It’s easy and quick—and a great way to network with fellow chamber members.

ocally owned businesses build strong communities by sustaining vibrant town centers, linking neighbors in a web of economic and social relationships and contributing to local causes. You will recognize many local business names on the backs of little league jerseys and soccer uniforms, and as sponsors for our community events like Gold Nugget Days, Paradise Chocolate Fest, Johnny Appleseed Days and Party in the Park. Buying local helps support these efforts, strengthening our ties to each other and our community. Did you know, when you buy from a local business you are not only helping the local business owner and employees, you are also helping to keep your community safe? With every purchase made in Paradise, 0.5% goes to help purchase police cars, fire engines, asphalt, supplies for the animal shelter and more. Measure C – the

0.5% sales tax measure that went into effect in April 2015 - makes this possible and helps keep more of Paradise residents’ hard earned money invested on the Ridge. 100% of Measure C funds stay right here in Paradise! Thus far, some of the items provided by this funding include: • Six Police Vehicles • Two Fire Engines • Increased hours for Animal Control Officer • Isolation units for the Animal Shelter • Sponsorship of four Police Trainees through the Academy • Road rehabilitation of many main roads • Road and drainage improvements on Pearson Road • Police body cameras • Pressure Washer/Sanitation Unit for Animal Shelter • Fire fighter breathing apparatus Even if you can’t find what you’re looking for locally, shop online! Why Did the Chamber Incorporate in 1941? To Buy an Olive Orchard, Of Course! Editor’s note: The Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce marks its official 75th anniversary this year. While we may think of the chamber as an organization to promote and support tourism as well as local businesses, through the years your chamber has been an integral part of the entire community, always working to make Paradise a better place. Throughout this year we’ll highlight some of the lesser-known aspects of the Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce in articles in the Ridge Business Journal.

mittee went into action to figure out how to fund the purchase. A local farmer leased the olive orchard and creative Chamber members delved into the crop’s possible worth, determining at the Oct. 22, 1940 meeting that the year’s crop would earn the funds for the $500 deposit. With immediate money needs taken care of, Chamber members turned to a more fundamental problem: the Chamber, although officially an organization with member-paid dues and a history of community service, was not

With its eventual incorporation, the deed was transferred to the Chamber. The Chamber’s minutes for the next 15 years are sprinkled with mention of “the olive orchard,” with a committee eventually formed to oversee the orchard’s lease and upkeep and report to the Chamber. As an example, G. Maselli & Sons, Inc. is listed as the orchard’s leaseholder in the

pple orchards. Plum orchards. Pig farms. Vineyards. Turkey ranches—all were popular farming businesses in the Paradise of the 1930s. While hard cash may have been tight during the Depression, Ridge residents who relied on the land knew they’d have food to eat, thanks to the bounty of the area’s red soil. But it wasn’t the crop from a 20-acre olive orchard that interested the members of the Paradise and Allied Communities Chamber of Commerce in 1940. This specific olive orchard was eyed by Chamber members due to its location. The parcel was off of Pearson Road, near what is now Recreation Drive, in the vicinity of what are currently the Gold Nugget Museum and Paradise Intermediate School. In that time, the primitive (but very popular!) community swimming pool was just off what we know as Mallan Lane, behind the museum. A bit further east on Pearson was “the schoolhouse,” now Paradise Elementary School. Paradise’s social and economic center still remained in the Black Olive/Pearson Road region but hopeful Chamber members felt the community would grow and need a central location for a community center which might house firefighting equipment, community services, sheriff deputies and/or community events. The simple olive orchard was in the right location. “Under the head of New Business, McNeill suggested the plan of acquiring the property…for a community center,” writes Helen Beery in the organization’s July 23, 1940 minutes. R.M Brown (who was also chairman of the Chamber’s Light Committee to get more streetlights in Paradise) offered to investigate the possibility. By Sept. 25, 1940, Brown was pleased to report to the Chamber that the property’s owner, L.A. McCandless, then of Menlo Park (CA) would sell the 20-acre orchard for $2,000, with a deposit of $500. McCandless offered to carry the balance, “but interest must be kept up.” The Chamber’s Ways and Means Com-

incorporated. Without the incorporation, the organization couldn’t legally purchase the land. On Feb. 25, 1941, the Chamber’s minutes report two votes which would benefit the community for decades to come: 1) Papers were drawn up for the olive orchard’s purchase. “The deed had been made out to H.S. Clewett as it was necessary to have some one to deed it to since the Chamber of Commerce is not incorporated.” 2) “A motion was made by Bob Bowles, seconded by Hugh Smyth that the Chamber of Commerce incorporate.” Evidently the year’s olive crop was less than anticipated, though, because the same meeting’s minutes call for borrowing money “to complete the deal.” Members voted to ask if, “Possibly 10 men could be contacted who would be willing to loan the chamber $10 apiece for a period of time” to fund the land purchase.” Roy Rollins, however, stepped forward to loan the money for one year at 6%, with Jim Alley and Clewett as the endorsers.

In 1956, Chamber members parceled off six acres of the orchard for the recreation district’s swimming pool. The remainder of the land was deeded to the newly-organized Paradise Unified School District in 1959; the land is the site for the current Paradise Intermediate School.

he second Wine in the Pines event took place on National Wine Day, Thursday, May 25th. A wide variety of wines were available for tasting, thanks to the sponsorship of Holiday Market and local wineries and vintners. Skyway merchants welcomed visitors, and were joined by business and craft booths from throughout our upper and lower Ridge communities. Attendees strolled the Skyway from Pearson to Elliott roads, stopping at wine, beer and distilled spirit tasting stations, and multiple shops and vendors offering specials, art, and delectable snacks. Wine in the Pines was made possible by generous support from the Town of Paradise, Holiday Market, HeavenScent Candles and More, A Stitch Above Embroidery & Shirt Printing, and your local participation.

Our new name will be Adventist Health Feather River, reflecting that we are more than just a hospital. We also provide clinic and outpatient services, specialty and diagnostic programs, and are a key partner for community health and wellness. We will be increasing our attention to the factors determining the health of our community, and looking for new and improved ways to contribute to and partner with our community to make it a place of wellness and vitality. We are working to make health care less complex and more coordinated, to pro-

vide better value to our patients, and to increase access to care, through best practices, enhanced partnerships, and robust wellness and prevention programs. As part of One Adventist Health, the transition brings to Feather River a new logo, which demonstrates life, growth and vitality. It also reflects the Trinity as well as the physical, mental and spiritual elements of whole-person health. Our new name is currently being vetted through a legal process and our new look will be in full use later this summer. But, a new name or a new logo does not change that we are still your neighbors, your friends, and your supporters in better health. We are still here to help you bring new life to your family at our Birth Day Place. We are here to comfort you as a family member takes their last breath at Hospice. We are here to encourage your progress following joint replacement surgery, and we are here to help you with those tests and procedures that help you to know your current health status. We are here. We are Adventist Health Feather River. Together inspired.

Have booth staffers wear a badge or similar colored shirts (chamber members “A Stitch Above” can guide you to a perfect shirt or blouse, with your logo/slogan stitched right on it) so view ers can easily discern who is staff.

Plan on standing for much of the evening. Have some water on hand because you’ll be talking a lot, too. Smile. If you get hungry, opt for finger foods that aren’t juicy or messy; I speak from experience. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people passing by with a question; even if it’s just about the weather or the dog they have on a leash, it will be a connection and an entrée into a deeper discussion. Look like you’re having fun. And really have some fun!

As much as we enjoy our PIP event, don’t forget that the very best way to support the marketplace in Paradise is to invest in community by shopping the Ridge all year long.

The Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce welcomes the non-profit organization, Paradise Rotary Club, for stepping up and providing your beer and wine service for the 2017 season. Most importantly, the Party in the Park, Music & Marketplace event could not happen without your gracious 2017 community sponsors:
