Our Gold Nugget Museum takes its history seriously--from the Donkey Derby to Doggone Doggie Contest, the Paradise Ridge will be alive with events celebrating our rich golden past. This year’s theme is “Trails of Gold.” Come join us for multiple events with fun and excitement for the entire family! The celebration gets under way with the Gold Nugget Queen Contest on Thursday, April 21, 7:00 p.m. at the Paradise Performing Arts Center. The Donkey Derby, Saturday April 23, recreates the original trek delivering the Dogtown nugget to what is now Old Magalia, with each donkey carrying a sack weighing 54 pounds. Head back to Paradise for the world’s greatest hometown parade on Saturday, April 23 at noon. There are floats, bands, horses, dogs, youngsters and oldsters, all competing for ribbons, trophies, and the sweepstake prize of $200. There is plenty of action on the Gold Nugget Museum’s grounds. The Children’s Costume Contest, Saturday, April 23 at 2:00 p.m. and the Doggone Doggie Contest, Sunday, April 24 at 10:00 a.m. are crowd favorites. Paradise Recreation and Park District 2016 Highlights By Mike Trinca District Manager, Paradise Recreation and Parks District

P

aradise On Ice finished its third year on the Ridge on January 10, 2016, following a blast of twentyone days of rain. The ice rink opened November 14, 2015 and the program continued for fifty-eight days with over 9,600 skating participants and approximately 5,000 spectators. During the first year of operation, the rink supported 18,000 skaters and over 10,000 spectators, but only had one day of rain. Did rain affect the success of the rink this season? Absolutely. A thirty-six percent cancellation rate would have a major effect on any business and the ice rink was no exception. Such precipitation would bankrupt a private business, but as a public service in the same category as a community swimming pool, the ice rink was able to weather the storm thanks to tax support. Was the ice rink a worthy public service to our community? Again, absolutely. Nearly fifty percent of the users of this facility were from out of town and they supported the local business community while experiencing a winter paradise. Another important factor of this program is that a

majority of the participants are teenagers and young adults engaging in positive recreational activity at a safe site. Financially, the ice rink has not met its objective. This accomplishment will require the cooperation of Mother Nature. Ten fewer rain days next year and the District will break even on this public service and that will be the tie breaker. There is another huge part of this package, and that is the additional business donations and sponsorships the District receives for this program from our local merchants. Keep it up Paradise, your generosity is doing wonders in our community. See you on the ICE starting November 11, 2016. Saving water on this planet is not about weathering individual drought years, but is a new way of life. Landscape design and the public’s perspective of what a park should look like are changing rapidly and

will gradually give way to more sustainable alternatives. With these new concepts in mind, the District plans to move forward with the development of the Lakeridge Park in Magalia in the near future. The District has completed the master plan and environmental document for this park and has thus far been unsuccessful in obtaining grant funds to develop the area. The District has completed the curb and gutter project along the park’s entrance on Lakeridge Drive and is currently working on completing the entrance road to the main section of the park as funding permits. There is hope for a new State Park Bond to be passed that may provide the money to move forward with this project. This is a uniquely planned park and will fit nicely in the community of Magalia. To all my friends in Magalia who worked so hard on this project, please have patience--it will happen, hopefully soon. The District made a long term investment on a future park within the Town of Paradise with the purchase of twelve acres of land on Pentz Road that will someday become the home of Noble Park. Plans include a soccer field, meet-

old concepts of acres of green turf must be put away. Look for more natural park landscaping in the future and a reduction of turf acreage in existing PRPD facilities. Play fields will remain turf at PRPD facilities until artificial materials become affordable and the District has funding to make the change, but turf at neighborhood parks

ing barn, playground, walking paths, picnic facilities and a signature landscape area dedicated to the recognition of historical orchards in Paradise. The District’s goal right now is to install the site work on this land so trees and plants can get established while the District waits for the right time to develop the new park. This one is a little ways down the road, but as always PRPD will get it done. Get out and enjoy the outdoors and when you visit a park, remember it’s yours!

Youth for Change Offers A Challenge Scott Yoder YIP/Outdoor Program Manager

B

uilt in 2015, the Youth for Change Challenge course was engineered and built by Synergo in accordance with the Association for Challenge Course Technology’s (ACCT) standards. The course is located at Youth for Change’s Specialty Services building at 7200 Skyway in Paradise. The course includes 5 low elements (2 feet or less off the ground) as well as 9 high elements that range from 30 -60 feet off of the ground. Low elements include the Spider Web, The Wall, TP Pentagon, and Nitro Swing. High elements include the High Circuit, King Swing, Cat Walk, Leap of Faith, and Junkyard. Limitless combinations and variations keep groups active and engaged for hours on end. The course has many different uses and intentions ranging from team building activities for Youth

for Change staff, to full day experiences for adoptive and foster youth, to adventure workshops for businesses and community groups. There are opportunities for all members of our community-- from corporate groups to church youth groups and everyone in between. Youth for Change staff structures each event to meet the needs of the group, from a day of fun and play, to a platform for re-energizing your team and learning valuable lessons of trust, communication and group dynamics. The spirit of the course is to provide an individual challenge for each person who participates, regardless of skill or comfort level. While it is easy to look high into the trees and immediately assume that the course is for daredevils and thrill seekers, the entire course is designed to meet each individual right where they are, and provide a learning opportunity for all who participate. Each participant chooses his or

her own level of challenge and method of participation. Whether you are leading the charge up in the trees, or holding a rope to help keep the team safe, there is value in participating! There is a magical place just outside of each of our comfort zones that stretches us, makes us feel vulnerable and “on our heels.” Then we move back into our comfort zone and are able to process and make meaning from our experience outside of our comfort zones. Youth for Change’s course facilitators lead groups into this process by having fun, supporting participants and accepting each person’s decisions while on the course. Facilitators are trained and certified in all technical aspects of the course and will ensure that every group has the information and equipment needed for a safe, healthy, and meaningful experience. Furthermore, the facilitators will work with each group to extract positive and meaningful implications from their experience

during group debrief and processing times. The staff at Youth for Change has years of combined experience leading groups down whitewater rivers, backpacking, rock climbing, and now facilitating challenge course activities. There is no way for an individual to know what they are truly capable of until they step out and attempt to try something new. There is no way to know how powerful a moment will be until you are in that moment. Youth for Change believes in the capacity for each individual to fully realize their significance and ability and seeks to provide guidance along the path of learning and self-discovery. There is no way to know the power of the challenge course unless you come out and give it a try! Walk down the bike path and

take a look, stop in and ask for a tour, or contact us for more information about how we can get your group onto the course. For more information please stop into our office at 7200 Skyway, call, or email Scott Yoder at 872-2103, or syoder@youth4change.org. Prices vary depending on group size and duration, so contact us today to discuss options for your group. We look forward to hearing from you and providing the experience that your group is seeking!
