New insurance information - DMV Self-Service kiosk loss of use may be extended at Paradise post office offers many services for Camp Fire survivors By Kimball Shirey CIC Heritage Insurance Agency President, Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce

A

s the third anniversary of the devastating Camp Fire passes and for those that still have open insurance claims, it is important to be aware of some important wording included in California Insurance Code 2051.5 (2018 Version). This code offered policyholders further protection regarding the settlement of your replacement cost on the home you lost plus code upgrades. The following portion of 2051.5 (b) (1) and (2) applies: An insured will have no less than 12 months (from the date that the first payment toward the actual cash value is made) to collect the full replacement cost of the loss, subject to the policy limit. In the event of a loss relating to a “state of emergency,” as defined in Government Code Section 8558, an insured will have no less than 36 months (from the date that the first payment toward the actual cash value is made) in order to collect the full replacement cost of the loss, subject to the policy limit. Additional extensions of six months shall be provided to policyholders for good cause.

Office at 6469 Clark Road. It’s available 24/7 and easy to use. Customers can conduct the most common DMV transactions using the touchscreen kiosk, from renewing vehicle registrations and receiving replacement registration cards and stickers to obtaining a vehicle record.

Insurance companies typically will require an estimate to determine the rebuild cost including code upgrades of your lost home even if you do not intend to rebuild it. Examples of good cause for potential extensions are: cost increases due to increased demand and supply chain delays, housing market issues, difficulty finding and retaining contractors, engineers, architects, and other professionals. COVID-19 delays also may be included as a factor in good cause. Bear in mind the extensions are not automatic and must be formally requested in writing to your insurance company. The request should also include a clearly described and documented log of your causes for delay. While the above-mentioned potential extensions refer to the replacement cost provision of your policy, the code also applies to additional living expenses. California Department of Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara detailed this in his notice dated April 3, 2020: In addition, the Department has received complaints from consumers and local and state officials that certain residential property insurance companies are insisting that insureds (who suffered losses in the November 2018 wildfires) must continue to

FROM THE DESK OF YOUR CHAMBER Chamber Advocates for Ridge Interests Regionally and Beyond

By Monica Nolan Executive Director, Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce

T

he Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce (PRCoC) is dedicated to identifying issues that matter to our members so we can effectively advocate for business interests at the local, state, and federal levels. As our 80th anniversary year draws to a close, we invite you to look back with us on our advocacy work of 2021.

COVID relief for local businesses At the state and federal level, PRCoC advocated for business grant and loan support, and relief from burdensome regulations. PRCoC distributed PPE supplies, and provided individualized assistance for local businesses in acquiring support, loans and grants.

Ridge infrastructure and services PRCoC advocated for the return of DMV services, a commercial sewer system for Paradise, and stays poised to pave the way for

community-wide broadband.

Ridge arts, culture & tourism

PRCoC participated in and shared information about the development of the Butte County General Plan supporting the County’s efforts to recover from wildfires, and address the effects of climate change, housing needs, and environmental justice issues.

PRCoC supports businesses and nonprofits on the Ridge as a vehicle for attracting the economic driver of tourism. We are committed to advocating for arts projects that will create and sustain a vibrant and compelling local culture. In our post-disaster reality, PRCoC has seen the positive impacts arts programs can have in healing an injured community.

PRCoC participated in and shared information about the development of the Upper Ridge Community Plan, which sets a vision and provides policy guidance for the Upper Ridge.

Construction regulations, recovery and costs PRCoC opposed the State Board of Forestry and Fire Protection’s Proposed State Minimum Fire Safe Regulations as lacking the flexibility to accommodate our varied local topography, compromised existing infrastructure, and the needs of our commercial and residential rebuilders. PRCoC supported Valley Contractors Exchange’s Construction Industry Workforce Initiative: Mobile Training Force, a mobile classroom that addresses the dual challenges of housing and labor shortages. PRCoC supported the extension of the Rebuild Paradise Foundation’s Missing Middle Grant Program, covering numerous pre-construction costs for an underserved demographic in disaster recovery.

PRCoC supports the Paradise Arts Alliance, a coalition formed to elevate the arts as sustenance for the community’s economy and its soul. PRCoC participated in planning sessions to create the “To Paradise, with Love” mural gracing the south face of the Skyway Antique Mall building. PRCoC encouraged collaboration between the business owner and the artists to ensure that the community project’s marketing potential was leveraged to maximum effect. PRCoC supported the National Endowment for the Arts’ Our Town grant funding. An innovative Paradise Arts, Culture, and Theater Center will draw not only businesses but also residents and visitors back to the Ridge, and has potential to play a transformative role in Ridge recovery.

MCKINNON & ASSOCIATES

PRCoC took the unusual step of discouraging competing commerce in a neighboring community, asking Chico City Council to consider the potential negative impact of its ice rink on Paradise’s burgeoning economy. PRCoC urged Butte County Supervisors to support public-private investments in recreation, health and wellness, and education to foster healthful living and economic vitality in our region by adopting recreational policy, zoning, and land designations in the Butte County General Plan. PRCoC supported Paradise Recreation and Park District’s state funding application for the Paradise Lake Loop Trail Project. Since 2018, PRCoC has served on the Welcome to Paradise sign committee, dedicated to restoring this pinnacle of Paradise pride. Our beautiful mountain home is defined by the commitment, cooperation, and collaboration that make Paradise all that its name implies. With 360 members representing approximately 3,500 local workforce, the PRCoC advocates on behalf of the unique economy of the Paradise Ridge. In closing, I thank you for your support and invite your input as we look ahead to 2022.

FROM THE DESK OF THE PARADISE MAYOR Town Mayor’s update for the Paradise community The council has filled the vacancies on our Measure V committee with three outstanding citizens: Patricia Elkerton as a full committee member and Gail Larson and Ron Lassonde are alternates. The Town is very grateful for their willingness to serve.

Steve Crowder Mayor, Town of Paradise Owner, A Stitch Above Embroidery and Shirt Printing

T

he government tree removal program has ended. But we still have noncompliant properties subject to abatement. There are some programs available to provide financial help and we encourage those facing possible abatement to contact our tree advocates at Town Hall. Measure V vacancies filled.

Emergency RV ordinance has been extended through April 2023. This is only for Camp Fire survivors already living on their lots with an RV permit, in compliance with the Town’s ordinance mandating power, water, septic, garbage service and defensible space. The extension was granted in consideration of the obstacles encountered by residents, including the pandemic , PG&E settlement offers, and delays in lowcost loans. Great news from Habitat for Humanity! They are currently building three homes in town and have just committed to a 15 to 20year plan to build 10 homes per year! Paradise Community Village (PCV) has rebuilt its affordable housing. It currently provides 36 units and is the first completed project

of its kind to return to Paradise. PCV received 400 applications; priority is given to previous tenants and Camp Fire survivors. We had a soft remembrance of the 3rd anniversary of the Camp Fire. And we must remember the 85 people who perished and the many that are still struggling to recover. We are embarking on year 4 of Camp Fire recovery. Community commemoration of November 8, 2018 celebrated progress while honoring the 85 community members who perished, and the many who are still struggling to recover from California’s most destructive wildfire. Life in Paradise is starting to feel somewhat normal with the return of our festivals, ice rink, holiday craft fairs and our Veterans’ Day celebration. We will forever remember our past, but we also must focus on our bright future!

Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas to all.

Thank you to everyone for giving me the opportunity to serve this community Three years after the fire, our rebuilding is going great! Our population, as best as we can figure stands at over 7,000! We had approximately 1,500 homes survive the fire, we have 1,106 rebuilt with certificate of occupancy (1,377 stick, 621 manufactured) 1,988 permits applied for with 1,837 issued! We also have 220 units of multi-family homes rebuilt with 390 permits applied for; 337 have been issued. We are making great progress on our sewer project for our commercial district. Through our monthly meetings with the City of Chico and the water board, we are close to bringing a proposal to full council of Chico and Paradise to vote on for approval between the two. Our environmental Impact Report should be completed in early summer of 2022. We are applying for grants for funding and are confident we will receive them. Other steps to take include property right of ways and design and build processes.

Town of Paradise Adopts New Town Seal

I

By Kevin Phillips Town Manager

—

n the three years since the Camp Fire, the Town of Paradise has made real progress on recovery and rebuilding. 40 Recovery Projects were identified through the Long Term Community Recovery Plan just after the fire, which represent the majority of the Town’s day to day work efforts. Some of the projects in the works include an Early Warning System including sirens, road rehabilitation for all publicly maintained roads, sewer, hazard tree removal, weed abatement, a reseeding plan and more. For more information on all of our recovery projects, visit townofparadise.com/recovery.

At its September 14th meeting, the Paradise Town Council finalized the adoption of a new town seal. Inspired by the rebuilding and bright future that lies ahead, the Town reached out to Jake Early, a local area artist, to help with the design. Jake, a Chico local, has strong ties to Paradise and always felt the town was part of his community. The devastation of the Camp Fire hit even more close to home.

—

With so many recovery projects underway, the Town of Paradise needed some extra help to keep things moving. Paradise residents will find some new faces around Town Hall and the Building Resiliency Center. Stop by and say hello!

“I lost my business (and most of my possessions) in a fire in 1997, so I have a slight understanding of how traumatic it can be to lose so much so quickly,” said Jake. “It was terrifying to see how many people I know lose their homes, businesses, or worse, their loved ones. When I was contacted to contribute my ideas on a new Town Seal, I jumped at the honor.” The design started with the silhouette of Sawmill Peak, where a fire lookout tower has been for decades. “It’s an iconic shape on the horizon from the valley floor, and being a lookout made it even more appropriate,” Early stated. He incorporated a dramatic sunset viewed from the Ridge and selected a typeface for the “Paradise” reminiscent of the font on the famous old “welcome” sign on the Skyway. Paradise Mayor Steve Crowder appreciated the artist’s contribution to the project. “I would like to thank Jake Early for his generous donation and expertise in redesigning the town seal. It comes at a time where we celebrate our moving forward with the recovery and vision for the future.”

Butte Fire Safe Council offers no-cost chipper service for fire hazard reduction

TOWN, from page A-5 Paradise sewer project update Work for the Paradise Sewer Project’s Environmental Impact Report (EIR) has continued through 2021 and is tracking for a public release of the Draft EIR in early 2022. The EIR is analyzing the impacts of a potential wastewater collection system for the Paradise Sewer Service Area and transported thirteen miles westward to the City of Chico’s existing Water Pollution Control Plant. Concurrently, the Sewer Regionalization Project Advisory Committee, comprised of both the mayors and vice mayors for the Town of Paradise and City of Chico, has been making significant progress towards draft Principles of Agreement which could govern a formalized contract between the two entities for the Town’s needed wastewater treatment services. The overall project is critical in the Town’s recovery through increasing access to affordable housing while improving regional groundwater quality. Construction, if approved, could begin as early as 2024. More information can be found at www.paradisesewer.com.

Skyway re-configuration update As a component of the Town’s post-Camp Fire Transportation Master Plan, plans have been made to increase evacuation capacity along Skyway between Pearson Road and Elliott Road. As many recall, in 2014 this portion of Skyway was reconfigured to one lane per direction with a center two-way left turn lane for the purposes of daily safety while balancing evacuation needs. Following extensive outreach, and in consideration of the construction of an expanded downtown including Almond Street, Town staff presented a variety of options to modify Skyway once again. On September 14, 2021, Paradise Town Council directed staff to incorporate a revised configuration for the next roadway paving project which includes two southbound lanes, a center turn lane and one northbound lane. This alternative captures the overall project benefits of increased parking and safer streets while further increasing evacuation capacity. The Town projects this portion of Skyway could be paved in late 2022 or early 2023.

Do you have fallen branches, overgrown brush and other vegetation that needs chipping? The Chipper Program is once again offering service to residents who are working on their wildfire safety clearance. The program provides an alternative to burning or hauling fire hazardous brush. The Chipper program is in its 14th year and anticipates offering service this season until spring or the funding is depleted. So don’t wait to get your fire prevention work done! Funding provided by a National Fire Plan grant from the Cooperative Fire Program of the U.S. Forest Service, Department of Agriculture, Pacific Southwest Region, through the California Fire Safe Council. This institution is an equal opportunity provider. For more information go to buttefiresafe.net/ chipper-program/ or call 530 877-0984.

How the Chipper Program works:

• Make sure that your piles contain no rocks, metal, mud, poison oak, scotch broom, vines, blackberries, or building materials • Include only materials that are less than 8 inches in diameter and less than 10 feet in length • “Loose” piles are preferable to tightly packed material. • Be respectful of the contractors’ time

The program is NOT able to chip: • Roots or decaying wood • Pinecones, pine needles, leaves, or yard clippings • Piles over 4 feet high or built over standing vegetation • Large diameter materials that will not fit through the chipper opening - please cut material that cannot be easily compacted so that it is no wider than 8”

• Build neat piles with all cut ends facing toward the street

• Short pieces that will endanger the chipper operator

• Build piles in areas that can be easily accessed with a truck

• Orchard or Timber Harvest materials

• Locate piles on level ground, or on

• Piles constructed with mechanical assistance (i.e. with a tractor)

construction permit delays, lack of necessary construction materials, and lack of available contractors to perform the necessary work. I hope this information will be helpful to those that continue to struggle working through this difficult process. CHIP received $649,500 from NVCF Butte Strong Fund for Paradise Community Village By Mark Montgomery Director of Fundraising and Communications, CHIP

C

ommunity Housing Improvement Program (CHIP) completed construction of the 36unit Paradise Community Village at the end of September. They celebrated the occasion by holding an outdoor gala at the property to raise money and awareness for affordable housing in the region. It rained heavily that day, but it did not dampen the spirit of the many people in attendance. Paradise Mayor, Steve Crowder, spoke to those in attendance, honoring the achievement and highlighting CHIP’s commitment to the Town. A few days after the celebration, the first group of eight households moved in, including five households who resided there at the time of the Camp Fire. Welcoming back former residents has been an incredible feeling for the CHIP staff. The plan is to have all units leased by the end of the year, if not sooner. Meanwhile,

affordable housing work on the Ridge got a boost with a $649,500 grant from North Valley Community Foundation (NVCF) / Butte Strong Fund. On October 27, staff and board members from both organizations were brought together at Paradise Community Village to present the check. The group also toured the property and visited the residential lots on Young Avenue where CHIP’s SelfHelp homeownership program plans to help four household build homes. The grant will strengthen CHIP’s capacity, allowing the organization to expand its ability to bring much-needed affordable housing to Paradise.

Paradise Community Village, new home to 36 families

Members from NVCF/Butte Strong Fund presented CHIP a check for the Paradise Community Village after touring the new facility that will house 36 families.

“We may be blessing others with this program, but I feel that we benefit, too,” shared Joleen. “I love knowing that we are helping families to furnish their new homes or supporting them with necessary items while they are still waiting to rebuild. It warms my heart.”

Inspire Hope is a program provided by the Feather River Health Foundation and operated through a partnership between Adventist Health and World Vision to support rural and underserved communities where Adventist Health is already addressing healthcare needs.

CAMP FIRE REMEMBRANCE EVENTS

—

On November 6 and 7, 2021, the Ridge community staged several events to mark three years of remembrance, healing and growth after the ravages of California’s most destructive wildfire.

Community members gathered for the 3rd annual Paradise Revival Festival at Bille Park. The event is produced by Regenerating Paradise and sponsored this year by Gold Nugget Museum, UTB Studios, Paradise Art Center and the newly opened Paradise Grocery Outlet. Photo by Allen Myers

This year’s theme for the Paradise Revival Festival, “Reflections on 3 Years” offered inspiration for attendees to paint their vision for the future of Paradise, facilitated by the Paradise Art Center. An impressive lineup of Ridge musicians included David Leon Zink.

Sisters Christina Burton and Julia Moreno were among the runners in the inaugural Paradise Phoenix 5K Commemorative Run sponsored by Paradise Stronger. With a route that showcased icons and progress in Paradise, the event supported wellness on the Ridge.

Shared remembrance took the form of a community photo shoot in front of the new mural “To Paradise with Love” on the Skyway Antique Mall building at 6118 Skyway. Featuring inspirational images of the growth of the Ridge, the mural also commemorates the lives lost in the Camp Fire with 85 daffodils painted by bereaved family members. New water meter installation for PID customers New water meters are being installed throughout the Paradise community—and with those installations, Paradise Irrigation District wants to remind customers that they will soon be billed for the quantity of water they use. The district’s water metering system was destroyed in the Camp Fire; since that time, customers have only been billed a single charge for water service. As meters are being installed throughout the district, customers will begin to be billed once again for consumption. PID will notify customers ahead of time with an example bill to show them what to expect. Customers can also download a mobile app, dropcountr, to help them monitor their water usage; the app can also alert customers to unexpected water use or a leak.

“Restoring consumption billing signifies a big step forward to more ‘normal’ district operations,” notes PID Assistant District Manager Mickey Rich. “Not only will it help restore the district’s financial health but it will help our customers be more aware of the amount of water they’re using. It’s especially important during times of drought for people to know how and when they’re using water so they can use it most efficiently.” Photo by Melissa Schuster

Runners in the Phoenix 5K stopped to add their inspirational words to the Trees of Hope at Hope Plaza. The trees will be planted once construction of the project is completed.

Although the district has 37% percent of the active rate customers it had before the fire, PID’s treatment plant is still processing almost the same amount of water as it was before Nov. 8, 2018.

Meter installation started at the “top” of the district and is progressing quickly throughout Paradise. PID officials anticipate completion of the meter installs—which also involves backflow prevention device installa-

tion—by January of 2023.

Help manage our community’s water resources most efficiently • As winter approaches, wrap water pipes and hose bibs to prevent freezing. • Where possible, turn off irrigation systems throughout the (hopefully!) wet winter months. • New landscaping may have increased water needs. Check with someone knowledgeable about the plantings to confirm water usage for newly-installed shrubs and trees.

PID’s board has adopted “Wise Water Use” standards • No outdoor watering within 48 hours of measurable rainfall. • Planning a new landscape? All water features (fountains and ponds) must use a recirculating pump. For more tips about using water efficiently, go to: PIDWater.com

Long awaited “Salute to Ridge Veterans” memorial unveiled For more than two years Commander Lawrence St. Germain, American Legion, Post 259 has been working to recognize the Ridge’s fallen heroes with a fitting memorial. On Veterans Day, November 11, 2021, the 3,785-pound granite “Salute to Ridge Veterans” monument was unveiled to an awaiting crowd.

After a brief dedication from Commander Lawrence St. Germain, American Legion (L-R) Christopher Heyremen and Carlos Castle undertook the unveiling of the 3,785-pound granite memorial dedicated to fallen Ridge soldiers.

Prior to the unveiling, traditional Veterans Day activities were observed, commencing with the presentation of flags by The Paradise Veterans Color Guard. The Paradise Symphony Orchestra’s Brass Ensemble entertained the crowd with songs including The Star-Spangled Banner and God Bless America. Each branch of the armed services was recognized with a rendition of its service anthem and asked to stand as their song was performed by the Mountain Ridge Singers. Mayor Steve Crowder and Supervisor Doug Teeter honored the veterans and

their service. After the ceremony, the crowd moved outside for the Veterans Monument dedication. Brief remarks were delivered by St Germain, thanking the generous sponsors and describing his motivation in bringing this memorial to the Ridge. St. Germain noted, “The original design for a wall was discarded as a potential distraction to traffic. Alas, back to the drawing board. I engaged a young man named Andrew from Chico Marble and Granite to help with achieving my vision. Between us we produced a granite monument that will honor our brave Ridge men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice.”

PPAC celebrates the retirement of its mortgage! More than 50 years ago, in the early 1960’s Cliff James Jr. dreamed of building an auditorium on the Ridge. He and many others put a lot of effort into that dream. It wasn’t until 1979 that a group was formed to begin discussions on how to raise the funds to build an auditorium in Paradise. The dream finally became a reality with the opening of the Paradise Performing Art Center (PPAC) on January 23, 1999. The fund-raising struggles were not over, but determined volunteers kept moving forward. Amazingly, the PPAC was spared by the Camp Fire. The following month, December, 2018 the final funds were received and the mortgage was retired. By September 2021, the PPAC Board of Directors felt it was time to invite the community to celebrate this monumental

accomplishment and retire the mortgage with a party. PPAC sends a huge “Thank You” to Big Mo and the Full Moon Band for helping them “Celebrate Paradise” and the paying off the mortgage! It was a wonderful evening with music and friends. PPAC Board member Ken Sprague emceed the event and thanked all the many supporters over the past year who helped pay off the mortgage in FULL. The public was invited to join in the fun at no cost courtesy of the concert sponsors. Many thanks to: Real Estate Professionals, Reliance Propane, Maggie Kennedy, Foothill Lumber, Mike White Construction, Ridge Builders, M. Roethler Engineering, Dobrich Septic, Hydro Tech, Integrity Builders, Crossfire, and Nic’s Restaurant.

Circa August 3, 1985, the PPAC groundbreaking ceremony was held and Phase I construction began.

Ridge welcomes new and returning businesses Grocery Outlet Bargain Market returns By Allison Denofrio

Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce Board Director Owner Green Garden Art

Regenerating Paradise was among the organizations gifted with a donation at Paradise Grocery Outlet’s Grand Opening.

“I’m so excited!” “Paradise needed this!” “I’m so glad they’re back!” were just a few of the comments made by Grocery Outlet Bargain Market’s opening day customers. Paradise’s newest grocery store opened less than two weeks before the year three marking of the Camp Fire. Aisles were not only full of fresh fruits and vegetables, GIANT marshmallows and avocado chips, organic and gluten free snacks, they were full of old neighbors, new acquaintances and long lost friends full rejoicing in the rebounding of Paradise . Wayne and Livia Kurtz had a dream of owning their own business. When they were interviewed by a Grocery Outlet

corporate recruiter, the couple knew they were the perfect match to be franchisees. The next question was where? Having once lived in Paradise and worked at Ace Hardware, Livia paid a visit to check in on this community. Being welcomed with open arms, she saw there was a need for what Grocery Outlet could provide for this growing community. Once they found the perfect location, the empty CVS building on Skyway started its transformation. Many months of construction provided the mostup-to date version of the friendly atmosphere that Grocery Outlet represents. At the event, Senator Jim Neilson made a personal appearance to present a resolution commending the Kurtzs on their past achievements and distinguishing their efforts in rebuilding Paradise. Also in attendance were corporate staff, neighboring Grocery Outlet

franchise owners, product representatives, Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce staff and directors and other Paradise grocery store representatives. The Kurtz family presented over $5,000 in donations to the community, including the Paradise Unified School District, Rebuild Paradise Foundation, Regenerating Paradise, and A Simple Gesture. The Kurtzs not only brought Grocery Outlet back to the Ridge, but they also brought four generations of family to plant roots and grow with the Ridge. With regular product turnover reflecting the seasons, frequent visits are rewarded with a variety of choices and new meal ideas. Be sure to notice the custom “Welcome to Paradise” mural depicting local icons and a fire fighter’s helmet, honoring the resilient spirit of the Ridge. Burnt Barn, a distilling company soon to find its home in Paradise By Melissa Schuster

Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors Burnt Barn Distilling Co. Honey Bee Hospitality of the Chapelle For Burnt Barn Distilling Co., the granting of a Conditional Use Permit by the Town of Paradise Planning Commission represents another hurdle leapt, or rather, laboriously climbed over. Now begins State and Federal licensing for one of the most heavily regulated industries, followed by licenses and permits from local agencies for equipment and wastewater discharge and more. All of this for what is, essentially, just a small family business. Joe Heron, founder of Copper & Kings in Kentucky began his presentation to aspiring distillers and distilleristas at Moonshine University by saying, “Give me all your money and let me stab you in the leg. That’s what it feels like to start a distillery.” Indeed. So, why are we doing this?

For our head distiller, Taylor Schuster, and his wife, Danae, it is the realization of his dream and a way to provide for their family after his retirement from the USAF. For his mom and pop, it’s being a part of making their son’s dream a reality, but it is also about creating a legacy business that will bring visitors back into the community and will help rebuild the local economy by exporting a Paradise product and our collective story through that product. And for all of them, it is about seizing an opportunity that the devastation of the Camp Fire left in its wake. What’s next on Burnt Barn’s journey? Erecting

A peek into Gold Nugget Museum’s future construction By Mark J. Thorp

Executive Director, Gold Nugget Days, Inc. Gold Nugget Days, Inc., Gold Nugget Museums, has embarked on an ambitious design for our new property at 475 Pearson Road. With approximately six thousand square feet of building space, 2.3 acres of ground in total, and a constructive collaboration with the Paradise Gem and Mineral Club, we’re positioning to begin our major construction in the spring of 2022. Our greatest appreciation extends to the Paradise Rotary Club and Rotary International for their assistance in remodeling our administrative offices, thus «planting our flag» and pioneering our adventures into the future. We will build out our plans in phases: Phases 1 and 2 over the next 3-5 years (depicted), and phases 4-7 over the next 7-10 years.

Ambitious? My goodness, yes. Worthy of our Ridge community? Yes, yes, yes! Plans include our traditional “Nuggetville,” blacksmithing, native tributes, and gold panning, as well as new designs with ag silos, maker’s spaces, and performance venues, to name a few. The new Gold Nugget Museum will be a full feature, one stop cultural center, with future

plans to incorporate our pre-fire site at 502 Pearson Road in later phases. Fulfilling our mandate to educate and preserve, we’ve never been more proud to share our collection, built with gracious donations over the last 40 months. A labor of love indeed. With professional collections, restoration, and conservation practices, we bring you your new museum. It›s been

Welcome to Paradise sign is moving forward thanks to Rotary and local donors

On October 3, 2021, St. Thomas More Catholic Church at 767 Elliott Road in Paradise dedicated its Memorial Wall with a Commemorative Mass and blessed the memorial plaque in honor of Camp Fire victims. Partially blackened by the Camp Fire, the Memorial Wall’s commemorative tiles display the names of parishioners and their family members (living and deceased), parish organizations, names of former parishioners who found refuge in other communities, and names of supporters of the rebuild of the hall and rectory destroyed by the Camp Fire.

Undoubtedly as you have driven up the Skyway and are entering Paradise, you have seen that progress continues on the “Welcome to Paradise” sign. With a huge thanks to Paradise Rotary, Rock Creek Construction, Mathews Readymix, Anderson Brothers Construction, Foothill Lumber, Chico Lowes, Kevin Lundy PLS, Northstar Engineering, Hupp Signs and many others, the base for the “Welcome to Paradise” sign is almost complete. The sign itself is nearly finished in fabrication and will be set in place very soon. The original halo will once again grace the top of the sign after the re-shaping restoration by the team at Hupp Signs in Chico. TOTR named “Best Comeback” by CN&R Chico News& Review (CN&R) named Theatre on the Ridge (TOTR) “Best Comeback” (Editor’s Picks). Here’s what they said: Paradise’s community theater not only survived the devastating 2018 Camp Fire, but the intimate venue has continued to persevere with utmost caution coming out of a lengthy shutdown due to the pandemic. Vaccinations are required for cast and crew members, and theatergoers are required to mask up, regardless of vaccination status. The CN&R applauds TOTR for this approach. We are proud that the playhouse has remained a part of the local arts scene and continued to host moving works of art while also instituting changes to try to keep as many of its patrons and troupe as safe as possible during these unprecedented times. Looking for an affordable land surveyor? Meet new Chamber member BCP-3D BCP-3D Inc. is a land surveying company specializing in all manner of surveys, from boundary and topographic surveys to Trimble Layout on commercial sites for MEP contractors. They also perform 3D laser scanning and drone surveys.

Their Paradise journey began in June of 2019, when a resident who had lost her home in the Camp Fire asked if they could help her. She needed a boundary survey so she could obtain a building permit but couldn’t afford the high prices she was being quoted by some of the larger survey companies. They helped her out and thought that would be the end of their work in Paradise. But after she posted a good review on Facebook, the calls started pouring in. Two and a half years later, they have performed around 300 surveys in Paradise, Magalia and Berry Creek. They have rented housing in Paradise and have established great relationships with local residents and contractors.
