“Toast to Spring!” with Wine in the Pines

T
he second Wine in the Pines event takes place on National Drink Wine Day, Thursday, May 25th from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. With last year’s participants stating, “This is great; we need more,” and “I’ve been in Paradise for years, but just found four new shops I didn’t know were here,” your Chamber of Commerce wants to provide every opportunity for visiting Paradise businesses, their employees, and proud owners. This year, Holiday Market will include more local wines, heeding the call from last year’s participants to acknowledge more local vintners. The public is invited to enjoy everything downtown Paradise has to offer, including merchant booths from throughout our upper and lower Ridge communities. Local artists will also be featured. The event will take place between Pearson and Elliott Roads along the Skyway, within walking distance of at least six tasting stations,
and multiple shops and vendors offering specials, wine tasting, and other delectable fare. Ticket holders will receive a map of participating businesses, wrist band and a commemorative wine glass. Tickets will be sold the day of the event for $20 at the parking area adjacent to the Foster Road, or purchased online at paradisechamb e r.c om/e v e nt s . Participating businesses may choose a nonprofit organization to receive direct benefits from the event, and patrons will have the opportunity to do-

Business Briefs 5,000 Pounds of Trout at Kids Fishing Day The annual Kids Fishing Day is slated for Saturday, April 22 6 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Paradise Lake. Sponsored by Paradise Irrigation District (PID) with support from the Butte County Fish and Game Commission, the event features free raffles, prizes for catching “big” trout and a snack bar. Reel in some of the more than 5,000 pounds of catchable size trout, including trophy-size trout of six pounds and more. Kids ages 3 to 15 may fish from the shore at Paradise Lake. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. PID employees, local residents and service clubs contribute their time to plan and staff this popular event. Cal Voc Creates Opportunities for Disabled Adults By Bob Irvine Executive Director, California Vocations, Inc.
contracts with the Town of Paradise and Paradise Recreation and Parks District to service the recycling containers from parks, schools and the trail walkway.
I
n 1984, a group of parents, concerned about the financial sustainability of the care of their adult children with developmental disabilities, purchased the assets of Paradise School for Boys and Girls and formed the 501(c)3 non-profit organization known as California Vocations, Inc. In the beginning, the organization focused on providing a high quality residential program for adults on the autism spectrum. Flash forward to 2017: the organization has grown in response to the needs of individuals with a developmental disability. We currently employ more than 225 staff and operate three licensed residential care homes for 14 individuals, seventeen supported living homes for 43 individuals and four day programs for 76 individuals. Our funding comes from state and federal programs via Far Northern Regional Center. The key phrase in our vision statement is “To Live in a Community Where All Belong.” To accomplish this as an organization, it made sense to develop programs that added value to the community and offered individuals we support an inclusive experience through paid jobs or volunteering. Located at the corner of Wagstaff and Skyway, our COVE Recycling Center operates a registered redemption center for aluminum, plastic and glass cans and bottles. It is operated as a business and staffed with individuals we support as well as job coaches. COVE provides meaningful paid work and opportunities to interact with customers from the community. COVE also

Individuals we support have paid jobs at the store receiving donations, providing laundry services for donated clothing, displaying merchandise, greeting and helping customers with daily specials. The Treasure COVE provides an ideal opportunity to interact with the community. Our store is currently located adjacent to the COVE Recycling Center but will be moving June 1 to a larger building we recently purchased at 633 Pearson Rd., adjacent to Drebert’s Automotive. We look for volunteer opportunities for our staff and individuals we support to give back to the community. The largest and most impactful volunteer activity is managing the Simple Gesture program, coordinating 80 volunteers to collect more than 20,000 pounds of food six times per year from 1,500 donor households and deliver to 8 local food pantries. Other volunteer activities include maintaining the flower garden on Elliott Road for the Veterans Hall, Meals on Wheels, visitations to the elderly in Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care Centers, assisting Paradise Chamber at Party in the Park and Johnny Appleseed Days.

A VA hospital in Paradise?
Back in the Day, Your Chamber Lobbied Hard for One! Editor’s note: The Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce marks its official 75th anniversary this year. While we may think of the chamber as an organization to promote and support tourism as well as local businesses, through the years your Chamber has been an integral part of the entire community, always working to make Paradise a better place. Throughout this year we’ll highlight some of the lesser-known aspects of the Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce in articles in the Ridge Business Journal.

A
lthough World War II still raged, the United States Veterans Bureau (now the Veterans Administration) was planning ahead. More medical care would be needed for injured and disabled servicemen and the Bureau set about investigating various sites in the US for establishing new veterans’ hospitals. Paradise boosters knew just the place—and the Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce stepped into action, surveying locations, eliciting support and presenting its case to the Construction and Hospitalization Division of the Veterans Bureau in 1943. “It has been called to the attention of The American Legion, Department of California, that the town of Paradise, Butte County California, will give the Federal Government, free of charge, ample acreage for the construction of a suitable hospital,” the application reports. The application shares that the community is “located in the foothills, 16 miles east of Chico, on a railroad and close to the rails centers of Chico and Oroville, is widely known for its climatic conditions so favorable for the sick and convalescent….” Chamber members worked hard on the report, now on file at the Chamber office. The hospital’s possible location was on land owned by the Paradise Irrigation District; on
Aug. 31, 1943 PID directors voted unanimously to convey the 120 acres of land (“no longer necessary for the uses and purposes of said district”) for $1 to the US government for use for the veterans hospital. The land, located on the west side of Skyway, “about one mile from the Paradise business section” was close to power lines and water mains. Chamber members assured the report’s readers that “if needed, construction of a railroad spur to any point on the property would not be a difficult undertaking.” The application process was not a short-term effort. The final application is dated April 1, 1944. As late as October 1945, Chamber members urged local residents to write to their congressman, Clarence F. Lea in support of the hospital’s location. The application highlights the Ridge’s business community as an especial benefit: “These businesses
and professional offices render friendly, high class service to all of their patrons, carrying stocks of merchandise found in much larger cities and are readily accessible to all sections of the Paradise district, being located in the heart of the area.” Despite the hard work from the Chamber and the community (and the free offer of land by PID), Paradise’s bid to house a veterans’ hospital was rejected.
This upbeat brochure, printed by the Paradise and Allied Communities Chamber of Commerce, was included in the 1943 application packet to the US Veterans Bureau. Paradise was being considered as the location for a regional veterans hospital and chamber members worked hard to convince public officials that the Ridge would be a healthful spot for the hospital.
