unning a business—whether a service-based firm, a retail shop or even an agency—is all about connections. Those connections don’t just go one way. A true connection means you’re engaging with your customers— they’re hearing what you say and you are listening to them. It’s called a two-way conversation. Unfortunately, many businesses just communicate outward. “Just pound into people what we want them to know,” is what one of our business clients shared with us as their goal. Being bombarded doesn’t feel good, though, does it? Especially if the person talking isn’t interested in hearing what you might have to say. Instead of “pounding,” here’s an easy— and effective—way to connect with your customers: Ask them something. A short (five questions or less) survey will engage your customer. They’ll suddenly be thinking about your business. They’ll know you’re listening—and you want their help. And almost everyone likes to know they’re helping!
Tell us how we can improve our business...
Surveying can be as easy as photocopying your questions on a sheet of paper and asking customers to fill it out while they’re visiting your business. Or, use the power of online magic to create a survey that people can take online. SurveyMonkey.com, SurveyPlanet.com, Zoho.com and others (search “free online survey”) make it easy to create a survey,
post it online, share the URL for the survey code in your newsletter or in an email blast and then analyze results. All three of these companies provide a limited (e.g. number of questions, number of responses) level of membership at no cost. For a monthly or annual fee, you can customize surveys and create questionnaires that are more complex and will give you even more information about your customers. What can you ask? Certainly checking in on how customers perceive your products and service is a no-brainer, but if you want to do something easier and more lighthearted, try asking some simple questions. What time should we open and close? What’s your favorite product/or service that we have? What new things should we carry or do? Those are just a start—but you get the idea. Write up the questions, distribute your survey, watch the results roll in and then tell your customers what your survey discovered. That additional touch-back will continue the conversation with your customers. And that’s what communication success is all about! Want to know more ways to market your business? Ridge Girls Learn Computer Coding—and More!
Ridge girls between sixth and twelfth grades are invited to explore computer coding with the local Girls Who Code club—a free after-school program helping girls use computer science to impact their community. OLD NUGGET DAYS - Our premiere Gold Nugget Museum event, beloved by our community for over 60 years, might have, sadly, run its course. The reality is, if the community isn’t willing to support the museum’s efforts to stage the parade, a valid point of “why do it?” has to be addressed. The parade will be celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2018, making this event potentially even more important. Every avenue is being explored to bring the celebration to you. What will it look like? Chamber-sponsored sign has welcomed Paradise visitors for decades By Tonya Dale Cedar Creek Editor’s note: The Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce marks its official 75th anniversary this year. While we may think of the chamber as an organization to promote and support tourism as well as local businesses, through the years your Chamber has been an integral part of the entire community, always working to make Paradise a better place. Throughout this year we have highlighted some of the lesser-known aspects of the Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce in articles in the Ridge Business Journal.

a 1914 train trestle were donated by Diamond International for the sign’s construction. Those five timbers, still in use today, came from a trestle on the West Branch of the Feather River near Ramsey Bar; the old Diamond Match lumber railroad carried loads across Big Kimshew Creek over this trestle. A Dec. 8, 1968 article in the Paradise Post, described the timbers as in, “almost perfect condition, are heavy fir measuring 20 inches high and 18 inches wide, and are 28 feet long. Each contains nearly 1,000 board feet of lumber and weight about 2,000 pounds each.”

o help finance the construction, the Paradise Chamber sent out letters to all community organizations to request funding help. An Oct. 17, 1969 letter from the chamber’s manager, Mrs. Margot Johnson, informed local organizations that, “Charlie Todd, Chairman of the new “Welcome to Paradise” sign is scheduling appearances before the Clubs and Organizations to present plans for the signs [sic] construction. Together with Clint Harris they will discuss details of the plans and display a model of the proposed sign. The presentation takes approximately 15 minutes. sign continued to welcome visitors to the Ridge, its metal halo growing a little less shiny through the years. Chamber records demonstrate that local businesses helped with the sign’s maintenance (Builders Supply donated paint and supplies in August 1978 to repaint it) and volunteers assisted with keeping the area clear of brush. Skyway’s widening to four lanes in 1982 meant the sign needed to be moved. Chicobound motorists can still see where the concrete foundation stands at the sign’s old location. With construction needed, community members banded together to refur-

bish the sign. Charlie Todd once again chaired the effort. “Todd said a new base has been readied for the new Skyway site and most material and labor for the project are donated,” related a Sept. 10, 1982 article written one day before the sign’s relocation. Todd’s involvement with the sign’s relocation was a natural, he said in the Paradise Post article: “I came here first in 1947 on a hunting trip and came up every year after that. I fell in love with the country then but never dreamed I’d live here. The town has changed, he admits, but like the sign says, he thinks it still lives up to its name.”

Johnny Appleseed Days 2017: B
y any standards, Johnny Appleseed Days 2017 was a rousing success. Residents and visitors came out in droves, creating waiting lines at the Grocery Outlet Pie Pavilion and at popular craft and tasting booths. The 900 home-made pies were gone just after noon on Sunday! The performances attracted a standing-room only audience; entertainment Co-Directors Frank Dodini and Sandy Miller - aka “Sandidni Productions” have once again outdone themselves in compiling a roster of local talent. Belly dancing, martial arts displays, acoustic and multi-piece bands entertained throughout the afternoon, much to the delight of young and old alike. In addition to showcasing Paradise, Johnny Appleseed Days provides a weekend venue for product and informational visibility, revenue generation, and outreach for our many community organizations. Paradise Chamber is proud to assist in the promotion of our community and all it has to offer. For three days prior to the festival, volunteer “Apple Corps” bakers with loving hands and generous spirits, gathered from all parts of the Ridge to participate in this year’s pie making party. Cooperative efforts from our numerous community organizations including Bare on the Ridge, De Sabla Guild, Quota International of Paradise, Mr. Vixie’s Class at Paradise Adventist Academy, Paradise Moose Lodge, Magalia Beautification Association, The Ridgeview Rangers, and the California Conservation Corps converged upon the Paradise Moose Lodge to build, bake, and shuffle the golden treasures to the Terry Ashe Park Pavilion. Paradise Lutheran Church Installs New Vicar
Andrew (“Andy”) Hanawalt has been installed as Vicar at the Paradise Lutheran Church (PLC). Andy and his wife Christine are natives of Paradise. After graduating from law school, clerking for an appellate judge, and practicing commercial litigation for several years, Andy decided to explore other life paths, returning home to Paradise and the Paradise United Methodist Church where he served on the board of trustees, intentional faith development program, worship-planning team, led evening Bible studies and delivered occasional guest sermons. During that time Andy discerned a call to fulltime ministry and now attends the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley in preparation for ordination in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). After graduation from seminary and ordination in the ELCA, Andy will be eligible for a Call as pastor of Paradise Lutheran Church, 780 Luther Drive, www.paradiselutheran.org.

Joy Lyn’s Candies Stays Current on New Confectioners’ Trends
Recently, Bill and Pam Hartley, owners of Joy Lyn’s Candies, attended the Retail Confectioners International (RCI) Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico. RCI is an association of the most prominent candy makers throughout the U.S. and Canada and offers instructional programs and tours of other confectioners’ factories. Pam and Bill are members of RCI and stay current on chocolate trends, industry regulations and new products by attending as many RCI offerings as they can. At the Albuquerque conference, Pam
and Bill toured the famous Buffet’s Candy and Popcorn Cannery Company founded by George Buffet, a cousin of Warren Buffet. Pam and Bill learned some new techniques in candy making and production as well as packaging. How Should You Use Retirement Plan Distributions?
During your working years, you put money into your IRA and your 401(k) or similar employersponsored retirement plan. But once you’ve retired, how can you maximize the benefits you get from these plans? First, be aware of the rules governing withdrawals from your retirement accounts. Once you reach 70½, you must start taking “required minimum distributions,” or RMDs, from your traditional IRA and your 401(k). If you have a Roth IRA, you can avoid taking withdrawals for as long as you want.
But if you have to take RMDs, what should you do with them? Here’s one suggestion: Put the money into three “buckets” – one for near-term income, one for medium-term income and one for long-term income. This approach can help you address a key threat to your retirement well being: the possibility of outliving your income.
