Welcome Welcome from the Mayor
Welcome to the Town of Paradise! With a name like Paradise, our Town has a lot to live up to, and we think we do a pretty good job. Tall trees, a quaint downtown, a thriving antiques hub, sweeping canyon views, and hiking trails are just some of the things that make Paradise a great place to visit. The small town charm, great schools, and community spirit make Paradise a great place to call home. Paradise has a rich history, having been first inhabited by the Maidu Tribes who made the Paradise Ridge their summer and fall residence. Prospectors headed to Paradise after gold was discovered in 1848, and then farmers settled in Paradise producing apples, prunes and pears. This rich agricultural history was first celebrated in the Paradise Harvest Festival in 1888, a Harvest Festival tradition that continues to this day as Johnny Appleseed Days, one of the oldest harvest festivals in the State of California! Paradise not only has striking natural beauty and a rich history, but also boasts a thriving community which regularly gathers to celebrate this great town we call home. With Gold Nugget Days, Johnny Appleseed 2017-2018 Days, the Lighted Truck Parade, Paradise Pow Wow, Paradise Chocolate Fest, HP Party in the Park, Wine in the Pines, and the Parade of Flags, Paradise’ community spirit is evident all year round. We welcome you to Paradise, and hope you find it to be all that the name implies.

Have you ever thought of calling Paradise home? Paradise is Northern California’s best kept secret. I’ve spent most of my life in Paradise and can’t imagine living anywhere else.

It has that consummate blend of attributes that just can’t be surpassed. Pine trees, just enough elevation to escape that valley heat in the summer, cute snow on occasion, Lake Oroville’s Limesaddle Marina, canyons that accommodate spectacular views---all with National Forest and backcountry adventures just a few miles further up the road. It seems as though there has never been a more affordable time to “ascend to Paradise.”

Properties in Paradise are absent of that tract-home-suburbiafeel that has come to be synonymous with the hustle and bustle of modern city dwelling. Paradise is structured more like a throwback to simpler times, where you know your neighbors and you are proud to be a part of your community.

With larger lots, and prices per square foot hovering around 31% less than Chico, there is an undeniable value. Paradise sold nearly 1.4 properties per day in the last year, and with our vigorous market and rising costs throughout the state, we expect to see these trends continue. Along with national tends showing an increase in suburbanization, smaller, less urban communities like Paradise are seeing a 2017-2018 QP rise in newcomers---solidifying the community’s vitality for the long term. Paradise has a population density only two thirds that of Chico, yet it is only a ten minute drive away. It seems that many of the characteristics that draw newcomers to Paradise today parallel the reasons families like mine journeyed to Paradise so many years ago. Explore Paradise Lake
By Tonya Dale Cedar Creek Publishing Tucked into the pines just above Paradise lies a sparkling attraction: Paradise Lake! The lake’s wooded shoreline offers a nine-mile outand-back trail for walking, biking or running—as well as acres of calm water to kayak on. Drop a line from a boat or the shore and catch a few of the more than 5,000 pounds of trout stocked annually. Or, just escape the heat of the valley’s summer months by lounging lakeside, enjoying a picnic and letting the kids let off some steam in the fenced playground. Yep, it’s all here—thanks to Paradise Irrigation District’s careful management of this recreational resource. And, since this is Paradise’s drinking water, there’s no swimming or gasoline-powered boats on the lake—so the sounds of the wind playing in the tree branches and the

cries of geese and ducks will be all that you’ll hear. Dogs are not permitted (leashed or otherwise) and there are daily parking and boating fees (annual passes are available; PID customers may purchase them at a discounted price). The lake is open 5 am to sunset each day except Wednesday. Paradise Lake is a quiet destination—some Ridge residents have lived here for years without ever spending time at this hidden jewel. But, once they do, they always return. It’s just that kind of place. To reach Paradise Lake, drive north on Skyway through Paradise. Turn right at Coutolenc Road (stoplight) and travel 2.7 miles to Lucretia Road. Turn left on Lucretia; the road ends at the lake’s parking area.

Hiking
on the
Wander
Ridge
One of the best things about living on the Paradise Ridge is that we are literally surrounded by dozens of wonderful hiking and/or biking trails--some long and challenging, but most ideal for those who prefer a more leisurely and easy pace. The best resource for those wishing to familiarize themselves with these trails is the locally best-selling hiking guide, The Flumes and Trails of Paradise: Hiking through History on the Ridge. It can be purchased at the Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce (5550 Skyway) or via any one of some two-dozen local vendors, all of whom are listed on the authors’ website, flumesandtrails.com. We asked the authors of this book, Roger and Helen Ekins, for a brief synopsis of some of the more “family friendly” trails in our area. Following are their recommendations:
Bille Park Nature Trail (.5 mile, round trip) Located on Bille Road, one mile west of Skyway, but perhaps best accessed via the West Wagstaff entrance, Bille Park is definitely one of the jewels of Paradise. The main hiking trail is west of the gazebo, on the north end of the park--just look for the sign for Indian Rock (613’), the Grotto (1,231’) and Lookout Point (1,463’) which ends at a cement bench--a perfect viewing spot for glorious sunsets. There are additional side trails, but some are quite steep, so keep a close eye on your little ones. And when your kids are worn out from hiking they’ll be quickly revived by the park’s two playgrounds.
By Roger Ekins Author, Flumes & Trails of Paradise
“the bike path.” It can be accessed at any one of several cross-streets, but perhaps the best place to park if you have kids with you is at the Burger King, at 7300 Skyway, as that will give you access to both bathrooms and snacks.
Paradise Lake (up to 9.5 miles, round trip) Although no swimming is allowed (this is the town’s drinking water), Paradise Lake is one of the most beautiful places to either hike or ride mountain bikes. There is a fee for using the parking areas (located from Coutelenc Rd. off of either Lucretia or Northlake Rd.), but you can also purchase an annual pass from the Paradise Irrigation District once you decide to become a regular visitor. This is also a great fishing spot--especially during the free, annual Kids Fishing Day, the last Saturday in April.
Upper Ridge Nature Preserve: Two Loops
(each about 1 mile, round trip)
A trail that could be considered handicapped accessible is the “Green Trail” of the Upper Ridge Nature Preserve. Heading up the Skyway, turn left on Ponderosa, then left again on Compton; then turn to your right and park adjacent to the gate. Then look for the trail off to your left, just before you get to the monument sign. Each of these loop trails (both with several side-trails) wanders among majestic ponderosa pines and can be a great choice for a hot day and are ideal for either walkers or mountain bikes. There is also a pit toilet located here--a welcome boon to parents with small children.
A shady Paradise Lake hike
Little Pearl (1 mile, round trip)
Perhaps the easiest way to find this aptly named and popular local swimming hole is to drive up the Skyway past the Magalia Reservoir, then park in the cleared area at Skyway and Dogtown Road. Then (very carefully!) cross the Skyway and walk up to the dirt and gravel road directly across from Dogtown Road. Go down this road about a minute, then look for a service road, immeYellowstone Kelly Heritage Trailway (up to 11 diately in front of you. After 9 or 10 minutes along this road (which parallels Little Butte Creek), look for the miles, round trip) switch-back trail down to Little Pearl. Because this trail This old railroad bed, which runs through the middle of is steep in spots, bring good walking shoes; this is not the town, is paved and therefore ideal for all kinds of bicy- place for flip-flops, but it is definitely one of the Ridge’s cles, tricycles and the like. In fact, locals usually call it well-hidden treasures. A Paradise For Wildlife, Too— But Don’t Worry!
By Tonya Dale, Cedar Creek Publishing
If you’re visiting Paradise or are new to our Ridge communities, you’ve likely noticed a variety of wildlife makes their home here, too. Squirrels scamper across power lines (and tempt fate as they dodge quickly across twolane roads) while deer often bed themselves down in the shade of tall pines (when they’re not munching on your rose bushes!).
raccoons, they, too, can become aggressive. Wild animals can harbor ticks and rabies—another reason to keep your viewing at a distance. If you encounter a mountain lion (uncommon in these parts) or a bear (more common—and there’s no need to call 911 if you see a bear, unless it’s become aggressive):
But for folks unaccustomed to all the creatures who also call Paradise home, here are a few tips:
• Don’t approach the animal; give it a way to escape.
Never feed wildlife! Wild animals are our neighbors, but don’t extend hospitality by setting out food for them. Wild animals fare better when they keep their distance from humans, allowing them to remain fully wild.
• Don’t run. Stand and face it. Make eye contact and pick up small children so they don’t run.
A garbage bag or a bowl of pet food left outside your home will draw in wildlife—including bears!—and the more “human food” they eat, the more they’ll seek it out. 2017-2018 If bears or other wild animals damage property in their search for more human food (or threaten human safety), they might be killed; feeding wild animals is “dead” wrong for these animals. Deer can forage safely on their own, also, and don’t need to be fed. And, while it might be cute to feed squirrels and
• Don’t bend over or turn away, even when picking up children. Bending over, turning away or crouching makes you look like prey. • Look BIG and make NOISE! Raise your arms, open your jacket and throw HPstones (or whatever you can reach) without crouching. • Wave your arms slowly; speak firmly in a loud voice. • Fight back if attacked.

Monthly Energy & Water Bills Costing You Too Much? Replacing the kitchen and laundry appliances in your home could be the savings you are looking for. You might be surprised to hear that just a dishwasher can make a huge impact on your utility bill. Appliances manufactured after 2013 are so energy efficient that the water and PG&E savings add up quickly. A new appliance might even pay for itself! Dishwashers made before 1994 used up to 10 gallons of water, compared to today’s dishwashers that only use 3-5 gallons of water for the entire cycle. Energy Star refrigerators manufactured in the 90’s would cost as much as $133 a year to operate, today’s refrigerators average about $50 a year--that could save you close to $1000 over the refrigerator’s life. The Paradise Parade of Flags By Michael Zuccolillo President, Paradise Parade of Flags American flags, placed by volunteers enhance Skyway on Memorial Day,
One thing that makes Paradise unique is its Parade of Flags that graces the Skyway from Neal to Bille and on Elliott Road from Skyway to Maxwell three times a year. There is a lot of history and hard work that goes into this event. Back in 1998, then Planning Commissioner Ray Dalton read an article about how a gentleman named Bill Wells was looking for a way to honor fellow Americans by doing a series of flags up and down the Skyway. Ray met with Bill and in 1998 construction 2017-2018of the sleeves began. Ray and a team of volunteers borrowed a compressor and drill from PID and began drilling holes and placing flag sleeves…over 1100 in total.
July 4th and Veteran’s Day
What was first thought to be a few hundred flags added each year was over 1000 in its first year! So now back to 2017 and the tradition couldn’t be any stronger. With the flags stored at the Paradise Elks Lodge, different service groups and volunteers form 11 teams and start placing flags in the wee hours of the morning with the assistance of the VIPS to help provide safety and traffic control. The HP flags are regularly washed and replaced as needed and this year as a student project the sleeves are being repaired and replaced in every hole. It has been an honor to serve as President of the Parade of Flags, and I look for1999 was the first year the flags were put out, and the ward to keeping the tradition going strong for many years participation from the community was overwhelming. to come.

History Gold Nugget Museum
Begin exploring the Paradise Ridge with a visit to the Gold Nugget Museum at 502 Pearson Road, and the Paradise Depot Museum at Paradise Community Park. Admission is free, but donations are gratefully accepted. The Gold Nugget Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 4p.m. It features historical artifacts from the Paradise Ridge in a number of interesting displays, including Nuggetville, an outdoor self-guided exhibit that replicates an Old West town: Wells Fargo Assay Office, working blacksmith shop, one-room schoolhouse, panning troughs, miner’s shack, and other re-creations of the mid and late 19th century! The museum grounds include Memorial Park, where the museum holds community outreach events throughout the year. In addition to free-standing displays changed periodically, special exhibits include: • Native American Exhibits, depicting Maidu culture including baskets, arrow points, fish-net weights, as well as mortars and pestles. • The Gold Mine recreates the atmosphere in an underground mine replete with mining equipment from local operations. • The newly established Yellowstone Kelly Exhibit displays Paradise’s Pioneer Heritage Project: the Yellowstone Kelly Heritage Trail . • The Doll Exhibit displays toys, figurines and accoutrements. • The Gift Shop has been newly renovated. Be sure to check it out! Look for museum-hosted events: Gold Nugget Days; Dutch Oven Cook-off; Days of Living History, and the Paradise Cowboy Music Gathering.
Paradise Depot Museum Just look for the caboose! Only moments from the Gold Nugget Museum, the Paradise Depot Museum extension is located at the intersection of Pearson Road and Black Olive Drive at the Paradise Community Park. S.T.A.R.S. Sheriff’s Team of Active Residents in Service
The Butte County Sheriff’s Office S.T.A.R.S. volunteer program began in 1993 with a group of 16 senior volunteers. Since that time the program has blossomed into a team of 80 volunteers who are dedicated to serving their communities. Initially, S.T.A.R.S. stood for the Sheriff’s Team of Active Retired Seniors. The minimum age has since been lowered to 45, and we are excited to announce that we are now opening this volunteer opportunity up to residents ages 21 and over. With this significant change comes an updated name; S.T.A.R.S. now stands for the Sheriff’s Team of Active Residents in 2017-2018 Service. STARS must be 21 years of age or older and must pass a background investigation in addition to attending a basic training academy. STARS volunteers are assigned to one of three areas, based on where they
Native American Owned
reside or choose to work: Oroville, Chico or Magalia. STARS volunteers represent Butte County Sheriff’s Office in all volunteer related activities and are therefore expected to maintain a very high level of integrity. STARS volunteers assist BCSO deputies and personnel with routine tasks in many areas of the department. STARS volunteers also provide many services to the community including extra patrols, vacation checks, graffiti eradication, and crime prevention. STARS volunteers are an important part of BCSO’s ongoing effort to foster positive relationships between law enforcement and our community. STARS volunteers are alsoHPcalled upon during emergency incidents, such as floods, fires and other natural disasters, to assist law enforcement personnel. If you are interested in joining the STARS Volunteer Program, visit our website at www.buttecounty.net/ sheriffcoroner or call 538-7820.

Heritage
Paradise... All its name implies
Resting like an emerald necklace at the throat of the northern Sierras, the town appropriately named Paradise grew from a series of overland stage stops with picturesque names like Toadtown, Dogtown and Whiskey Flat. Where early travelers took pleasure in brief rest stops under the cooling pines of Paradise, visitors now plan extended weekends with no other destination in mind.
The beauty of the Paradise Ridge beckons today as it did when the first gold miners staked their claims along the area’s sparkling rivers and streams. Then and now, Clear Creek, Butte Creek and the foaming branches of the Feather River, fed by Ridge springs and high country snowmelt, carve their way through 2017-2018 the stunning canyons. Wildflowers abound along Paradise roads and byways and deer still browse gracefully among the tall pines. The “gold fever” that led to the settlement of the Paradise Ridge also gave rise to one of the area’s most
popular annual events, a four-day “Gold Nugget Days” celebration. In 1859, a 54 pound gold nugget was brought to Dogtown from the Willard mine, and the discovery of the “Dogtown Nugget” is now acclaimed every year with a colorful parade, hilarious Donkey Derby, concerts, dances, variety shows, exhibits and contests.
Grizzled miners were followed to Paradise by men and women with a larger vision. These hardy souls saw gold in the emerald green of the ridge, founded a thriving lumber industry, and planted the apple orchards for which Paradise became famous. Now every fall, “Johnny HP Appleseed Days” commemorate those versatile pioneers whose efforts at one time afforded Paradise its name as “the Apple center of California.” The entire town participates in a joyful two day festival of games, displays, music and food honoring the apple.

Legends Recently, local resident Bill Hartley discovered that Paradise was home to “Yellowstone” Kelly-- one of the most celebrated and respected figures in the history of the American west. Luther Sage “Yellowstone” Kelly was an American soldier, hunter, trapper, scout, adventurer and friend of Native Americans. He was a confidant of President Theodore Roosevelt and was nominated for the Medal of Honor. After a life of adventure he and his wife May retired to Paradise and established a productive orchard on Clark Road. The Memorial Trail was renamed in his honor in May of 2017. QP

Paradise High School Chorus & Band The Paradise High School Band is unique to our area. In addition to performing at local events, such as Memorial Day and Gold Nugget Days, The “Pride of Paradise” is one of the few bands north of Sacramento that competes in marching competitions throughout the State.
Like to sing? Then the Paradise High School Chorus is the class for you! This well respected group performs at special events all school year long. In the past they have toured the Northwest United States, sang at the inauguration of the Governor of California and, most recently, traveled to Hawaii to perform at the 75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor. The Paradise High School Chorus also sings at local events such as Christmas Tree Lightings, football games and local concerts. Many of their graduates have gone on to sing professionally, teach music, or just sing in their local community or church choirs.
The Pride of Paradise getting ready for another competition. Joined by the Flag Team and I.D. Unit (known as the Band Auxiliary) the PHS Band has also been invited to march down Main Street Disneyland on five different occasions! Known for their energetic routines and commitment to excellence, the PHS Band is a great class to make friends and go on new adventures. Paradise Unified School District begins teaching instruments in the sixth grade. If your child chooses to join band then one day they may also have the chance to be a member of the Pride of Paradise!

A Dream is Fulfilled By Maureen M. Wisener Assistant Vice President, Marketing & Communications Feather River Hospital
2017-2018
Feather River Sanitarium, circa 1950
Health The dream of a community healthcare center with strong health education programs, along with medical and surgical services was a shared vision by local four physicians. These doctors, Dr. Merritt Horning, Dr. Dean Hoiland, Dr. C.C. Landis, and Dr. Glen Blackwelder, pooled their resources and sought out contributions to help make that dream a reality here on the Ridge. The focus was to ensure that fresh air, sunshine, clean water, and other natural elements were part of the “therapy” for ill patients, and to that end they ultimately purchased (much in their own names and later deeded to the corporation that built the first hospital) a total of 107 acres of property on the edge of the Feather River Canyon. This beautiful spot was ideal for all that their dream envisioned. QP The small hospital, Feather River Sanitarium, opened with 15 beds in early December, 1950. In the mid-60s, the hospital desperately needed to expand to accommodate the growing needs of the community. The new hospital provided 50 acute care beds, and a 97-bed extended care facility, the forerun-

ner of a skilled nursing facility. In addition to the expected services of hospitals, Feather River Hospital also provided a barbershop and a beauty shop for patient needs. Later, many of the extended care beds were converted to acute care beds, and the hospital was licensed for 101 acute beds and 20 skilled nursing beds. Additional services and programs were added to support key needs, such as rural health clinics, diagnostic imaging, laboratory services, physical therapy, diabetes education programs, cancer care, hospice and home care services, and many more. In 2012, an enlarged Emergency Services department was added to the campus, and telemedicine services for specialties such as neurology are now routine. Adventist Health Feather River operates programs and services in many locations in Paradise, Magalia, Chico and Corning, endeavoring to locate key services where they are most convenient for the patients. Many of these programs have resulted from the advantage that this community hospital has as part of a larger health care system. Adventist Health is a broad system of hospitals in four states, providing system expertise, access to key technologies, and support for growth 2017-2018 and expansion. Today, Adventist Health Feather River employs more than 1100 individuals, is honored to be supported by more than 400 volunteers, and partners with about 200 physicians and advance practice professionals to care for our community 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

The State of Real Estate on the Ridge By Patty G. Mckee, Realtor® President elect, Paradise Association of Realtors®
The lack of inventory is currently driving the market. This puts sellers in control again, leaving buyers in a slightly disadvantaged negotiating position. Buyers can no longer take a few days to think about the purchase if they really want that home. Multiple offers on some homes mean sellers can choose a buyer that will be willing to overbid the price and/or cut their conditions such as repairs. This assumes that the home is priced well and attractive because buyers still want to fall in love with a home and feel they paid a fair price. Sellers should consult a REALTOR® months before listing for advice on effectively preparing a home for sale. Sellers who bought at the height of the market frenzy may still not be able to recover their investment but the market is certainly improving throughout the state. In the Paradise/Magalia area we see an
encouraging upswing in prices. In 2016, 78 single family homes sold in Paradise during an April/May time frame. During that same time frame in Paradise in 2017, 82 homes were sold with a median price increase of about 22%. In Magalia the number of stick built homes sold were 26 versus 54, so sales doubled and the price increased a bit over 12% on average. Buyers should not wait to buy. Prices are still reasonable and the mortgage market is still very favorable for them, with home loans available in the low 4% range, sometimes with a 3% down payment. There are also a number of specialty loans to help the first time buyers and various groups such as public servants, veterans and qualifying union members. Ask your REALTOR® for a list of reputable local lenders. It’s a great time to buy or sell.

Consumer shipping tips from your local shipping experts Shipping a package can be hectic, and thanks to a sometimes frenetic pace, it can be easy to put things on the back burner. Shipping can be expensive, especially for last-minute mailings. But the following are a handful of ways to ship smart and save both time and money. Use a sturdy box that’s the right size, make sure to include enough packing material and tape it securely. PostNet has all the shipping supplies you need in one place. Don’t have supplies at home? We’ve got you covered. Ship directly to the recipient. Just be sure to have the recipient’s correct address when you come into PostNet. Ship early. The longer you wait to ship, the more you can expect to pay if you expect that package to arrive on time. For example, did you know there are remote parts of the contiguous lower 48 states where even now it may take an extra day for package delivery – versus sending to large cities, where it’s possible to get items there in the same day? Insure the items you ship. While the industry is often remarkably effective at delivering packages intact and on time, items are sometimes lost or damaged. By insuring your packages, you’re ensuring you won’t be out of luck should your package be lost, damaged or stolen before it2017-2018 reaches its destination. Need overnight shipping? Need stamps? Let us do the work for you. PostNet has been Your Friendly Neighborhood Business Center for 12 years. We take the hassle out of all your business shipping dilemmas. Ride
Biking on the Ridge
By Torey Feldhaus
The mountains are calling. There is no shortage of cycling opportunities in and around Paradise. The Ridge’s potential for a healthy, active cycling community is as yet untapped. For road riders, one of the greatest Century road rides-The Wildflower--comes directly through Paradise while climbing up the beautiful Honey Run Road. With only a few roads through town that are bicycle friendly and safe, it’s highly encouraged to ride the Bike path which was once the old railroad grade. Recently re-christened the Yellowstone Kelley Heritage Trail, this is a mellow 5.2 mile (one way) paved segment that starts just below Neal road and travels uphill to the top of Pentz and Skyway. If you pedal a little further, you will reach Magalia which has endless trail opportunities. One is the mellow dirt trail alongside Paradise Lake. This route is another out and back with one-way mileage of 4.3 miles. If single track is your preference, look no further than the dirt loam trails of the POA and nearby BLM trails at the end of Ponderosa Road. Be sure to bring your climbing legs to go up and down the canyons! If you prefer long gravel and dirt roads, you can log as many miles that you want. With endless logging roads, numerous rail trails, the mountains near Paradise have it. If you prefer BMX riding, Chico currently has the spots to shred. It’s a possibility that in the near future, Paradise may have a BMX spot of its own. If cycling is your thing, Paradise has an adventure for you! The Paradise Airport was established in 1967 by Vernon West, and has changed hands only twice before it was purchased by the Franklin family in 1987. The privately owned Paradise Airport provides hangars, tiedowns and services for tenants and is home to the active flying club The Birds of Paradise. Franklin Aviation has a certified flight instructor on site at the airport to walk you through the process of becoming a pilot or add on ratings. If you’ve always wanted to become a pilot, we are here for you, offering an FAA certified instructor. Franklin Aviation is an authorized broker to help buy or sell 2017-2018 your aircraft, and also offers aircraft rentals. For flight instruction, sales and rentals, contact James at (530) 521-2289

Spiritual Community within the Community By Reverend Andy Torkelson, Center for Spiritual Living, Paradise

Houses of worship stand tall throughout this community –the brick and mortar temples of inspiration, prayer, song, celebration, and teaching. The Chamber of Commerce and other non-profits stand the high watch for the larger community’s heart and soul. Centers of spiritual celebration are part of that high watch mission. BOB’S
Inegrated Medicine & Veterans Health By Sheryl Sanchez, L.Ac., Heavenly Herbs and Acupuncture, Paradise Research into the importance of and benefits from an integrated model of health care has been recognized at the federal level for at least 20 years now with the formation the National Institute of Health’s (NIH) National Center of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). (NCCAM was renamed to National Center of Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) in 2014). One important indication of integrative medicine’s increased acceptance is NCCIH’s recent educational campaign geared towards veterans and military personnel discussing such topics such as managing chronic pain, PTSD, stress/anxiety and insomnia using ‘complementary practices’. A recent new analysis (3/17) of a National Health Interview Study, which was conducted by the CDC from 2010 to 2014, shows that veterans are in much more pain on average than non-veterans, and the ‘NCCIH is partnering with the Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense on 13 grants to research military and veteran health with a focus on non-pharmacological approaches to pain and related conditions’. The Veterans Health Administration has used acupuncture and chiropractic treatments for many years now, amongst other complementary practices, such as massage, hypnosis, meditation and yoga. The Veterans Choice program, which began in 2015, also allows veterans to go to local acupuncturists and chiropractors 2017-2018 for pain management treatments, with prior authorization, so that a veteran does not have to wait more than 30 days for an appointment or drive more than 40 miles to the closest VA facility. For Butte County residents, that includes every veteran needing such services for pain management, given VA authorization or approval.

Magalia & the Upper Ridge photo credit: STEVEN HILLE
Beauty By Doug Teeter Butte County Supervisor
The Upper Ridge should definitely be considered the cross roads of civilization and “natural life.” With plenty of open space and a smattering of businesses, one is assured to find a spot to enjoy nature or chat with other folks. With few bike lanes or sidewalks, one travels around by walking and biking up and down the improvised trails and alongside the rural roads. For the “find it yourself” kind of fun, you can hike or cross country ski for what may seem like forever on Sierra Pacific Industries’ land, go swimming in the West Branch Feather River’s many pools or, when desiring a little more of an extended get away, camp in Butte Meadows or at Philbrook Lake. For those seeking2017-2018 a little more civilized recreation, a good bet is the twenty one miles of trails at the Paradise Pines Property Owners Association, kayaking on Paradise Irrigation District’s amazing Paradise Lake or seeking reflection amongst the beautiful meadows, ponds and bronze sculptures at Merlo Park in Stirling City. The adrenaline junkie has
much to choose from. Mountain biking those short but challenging trails at Bureau of Land Management’s Forks of Butte Creek, motorcycle some great curvy paved and gravel roads, and in winter ride snowmobiles at the Jonesville Snow Mobile Park near Butte Meadows or in summer raft Butte Creek, bridge to bridge, in some sort of inflatable. One can even work on archery skills at Paradise Bow Hunter’s “3-D” range in Paradise Park and Recreation District’s Coutolenc Park. When bellies rumble, good eats can be found casually at Jaki’s, the authentically restored Magalia train depot named appropriately enough “The Depot”, or go boldly with Sakura Sushi. Of course whatHPcivilized community doesn’t have burgers, pizza and Chinese? Magalia’s got you covered with Izzy’s, Red Lion and Happy Day. Don’t miss Butte Meadows, the libations and food at Bambi Inn, great BBQ and beer at the Outpost, or handmade pizza and full deli at the Mercantile general store.

Archery on the Ridge Paradise Ridge archery history dates back nearly 100 years when President Woodrow Wilson enacted legislation designating recreational lands. Currently, the Paradise Bowhunters Archery Club occupies twenty-five acres along Coutolenc Road at 15000 Merchants Bar Road. Within the range, a practice zone offers targets from 20 to 60 yards. There is a 42 target course with marked yardage from 8 to 80 yards. This follows the NFAA guidelines allowing competitive shooters to determine their class. During tournament shoots, dry camping is available. Membership offers direct access to the range dawn to dusk daily. The range is unlocked and open most Sundays. 3D targets are usually available on the 2nd Sunday of each month. Volunteers from the membership and local friends maintain the range. Work parties are held 2017-2018 monthly to clear debris and prepare for shoots. Check Facebook for information on current events. Regular certification inspections are performed by the National Field Archery Association/California Bowmen Hunters State Archery Association to ensure the safety of the range for all users.

The range is used for youth programs, such as Boy Scouts. Archery lessons are available through the Paradise Recreation and Park District and private certified instructors. The Paradise Ridge offers a wealth of good old fashioned family fun, with many natural wonders for our children to experience. You are never far from a scenic park to go hiking, a lake to go fishing, or a swimming hole to take a dip in. Ask any of the locals and they will tell you stories of their favorite spots, many of which they have been going to since they were children. Paradise Recreation and Park district offers numerous children’s activities, including team sports. The Paradise Library has an abundant children’s section with a busy calendar of story times and craft hours. Northern California Ballet offers world class dance instruction and if you’re looking for something more offbeat try the children’s aerial yoga at Positive I! Young thespians can 2017-2018 ophit the stage at Stagecoach Youth Theatre Program, erated by Theater On the Ridge. Keeping up with technology is A Maker’s Space, a public STEAM lab for everyone. The choices are plentiful and year round with many organizations and businesses HP offering summer camps and special workshops--not to mention our annual events: Gold Nugget Days, Chocolate Festival, Days of Living History and Johnny Appleseed Days.
