A Word from the Town of Paradise Public Information Officer on Personal Preparedness Joanna Gutierrez Town Clerk, Town of Paradise

“T

his is Joanna Gutierrez, Town Clerk and Public Information Officer for the Town of Paradise.” No, this is not an emergency announcement, but a story about how information is provided to our citizens when disasters affect our Town. The term “baptism by fire” is appropriate for how many of us public employees learned our emergency service roles. In June 2008, over 14,000 people were evacuated off the Paradise Ridge when the Humboldt Wildland Fire that started in Chico was driven up the Butte Creek Canyon, across Skyway and into Paradise by a 45mph wind and again, less than a month later, when the town was threatened by the July 2008 Camp Fire that lit up the Feather River canyon on the east side of our Town. Windstorms, snow storms, power out-

ages, floods and wildfires have, and will continue to create, drastic emergency situations in our town. Public employees are obligated by state law to serve as emergency service personnel during declared disasters, a challenge that is outside of our normal duties. The Public Information Officer is responsible for providing the public information that describes the threat to public safety and to assist citizens in safely evacuating their homes, if necessary. The information may be accessed as follows: 1 - Tune your radio to the Town’s AM 1500 station. During emergencies, this frequency is devoted to information relating to the current emergency. The radio is most valuable during power outages, and has, at times, served as the sole source of information.

2 - Listen to the local media. Press releases are emailed frequently to update the local media. 3 - Boot up your computer to the Town’s website to access updates. 4 - “Like” the Town’s Facebook page to receive alerts. 5 - Call the Town Hall. A call center will be established at the Town’s Emergency Operations Center, staffed by trained volunteers – real people who will have the latest information available. 6 - L ook for kiosks. If an emergency becomes on-going, field workers visit shelters and set up informational kiosks. In conclusion, the best practice is to remain personally prepared for natural disasters. Take measures to protect your property and to provide for your people and pets before disasters strike. Consider the special needs of the disabled, necessary medications, (insulin for diabetics, as an example), leash and container for pets, and a communication plan with day care providers in the event you are separated from your children.

Spiritual Community within the Community By Reverend Andy Torkelson Center for Spiritual Living, Paradise

Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce Thanks its Supporting Member Churches

Raised by a Baptist Sunday school teacher and a deacon, and attending Christian schools, Andy was marinated in theological themes throughout his youth. As he grew into young adulthood, disillusionment led him to examine a wide array of religious and spiritual studies. A career in juvenile corrections furthered his spiritual journey, and he eventually arrived at Religious Science. He had found his truth. Andy’s metaphysical education continues in the ministerial portion of Science of Mind classes. Andy serves on the Board of Dircetors of the Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce, and also shares his talents and unique world view with the Paradise Post.

s I drive around the Ridge and gaze at all the decals gracing the backs of cars, trucks, and motor cycles –mixed in with all the political messages and cultural icons, I notice every religious and spiritual affiliation imaginable. Christianity is there; Eastern ideas are reflected; Tribal traditions, Buddhism, Wicca –and everything in between-- indicating the rich religious diversity their drivers are part of –with devotion and worship. The roads, lanes, and streets those vehicles travel down are home to the houses of worship that stand tall throughout this community –the brick and mortar temples of inspiration, prayer, song, celebration, and teaching. Spiritual communities are part of the rich fabric that is this larger community. Every day and every evening folks are attending Bible studies, Yoga sessions,

We all know that when people find a teaching that speaks to their heart, it becomes a touchstone for inspiration. Some individuals gravitate to the Bible, whiles others may love the Tao, or the Qur’an, or the Book of Mormon. Here in this small Northern California community each of those texts are taught, discussed, examined, and revered. Often you’ll hear people say they admire the Chamber of Commerce and other non-profits for standing the high watch for the larger community’s heart and soul. Centers of spiritual celebration are part of that high watch mission. Church is where babies are baptized, those experiencing hardship are fed, couples are wed, families are counseled, the dying are nurtured, twelve step groups meet, musicians play, and those of shared faith speak their common language. The most common language in religion is optimism. No matter the stripe of the doctrine or theology, spiritual ideals hold forth hope, love, peace, compassion, and redemption. Some find these virtues in salvation, others in drumming, others in discussions, or in group meditations, or perhaps within a circle of candlelight. These ideals have traveled down to us

from great teachers like the Buddha, Jesus, Lao Tzu, Joseph Smith, Emerson, and countless others. They too, lived in community, and understood the value of coming together to build a foundation where individuals, and families, and loved ones may live, celebrate life, and thrive. Often we hear ourselves and others talk about the ideal town or community. Somewhere in our minds we picture that place. And that image usually includes businesses, fire departments, schools, parks, shade trees, and beautiful neighborhoods. I’d submit those visions also reflect communities of religious tradition –churches, temples, sanghas, mosques, sweat lodges, and even living rooms –anywhere a teaching that connects us to a higher ideal, can take place among those who also call the larger community –home.

Paradise’s Smoke-Free Entryway Law is now in effect and the Smoke-Free North State program wants to assist local businesses to comply with the new ordinance. A smoke-free, litterfree entryway creates a clean, safe and inviting environment for your customers and employees. The National Fire Protection Agency estimated there were 90,800 smoking-material fires in the U.S. in 2010, causing 610 deaths, 1,570 injuries and $663 million in direct property damage. Two percent of brush, grass, and forest fires were started by smoking materials, and in many of these fires, the item first ignited was light vegetation, including grass, leaves, needles, chaff, mulch, and compost. Free technical assistance visits will provide tips and tools for compliance and no cost signage, door mats, and educational materials for Paradise businesses. Eat, Drink, Buy Paradise 2015 By Monica Nolan Executive Director, Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce

O

n Wednesday, May 13, Paradise Chamber and community members gathered to Eat, Drink & Buy Paradise at Paradise Square Banquet Room and its adjoining patio. This event was generously supported by Wells Fargo Bank, which invests in community by sponsoring Chamber events and projects on a year-round basis. Chamber members and the public networked and shared information about local goods and services while sampling excellent offerings from Annie’s Restaurant. Also on hand with snacks to share were Garibaldi’s Catering, with some outstanding gumbo, SaveMart with sinfully delicious toffee pecan cookies, and Bare on the Ridge, with crunchy Bare Bears.

A stamp card system ensured that attendees visited all exhibits, collecting SWAG and information about our local shops and services, and several local shoppers walked away with prizes, including dinner for four from Garibaldi’s Catering, gift certificates from Bobbi’s Boutique, a gift basket filled with local products from Edward Jones Investments, gift cards and shopping bags from SaveMart, gift certificates from Big 5 Sporting Goods, Norton Buffalo CDs from Center for Spiritual Living, and a trial membership from Ridge Fitness for Women. Because local businesses are essential to the vitality of our local economy and character, your Chamber organizes this event each spring to spotlight new members and connect business with community. Shop the Ridge first; for every dollar you spend in your local community, 68 cents stays put to support local services and infrastructure.
