“Jewel of the Foothills” Soon To Be Debt Free By Harvey Parrott President, Paradise Performing Arts Center
T
he Paradise Performing Arts Center is frequently referred to a as the “Jewel of the Foothills,” and rightly so. Entertainers who have traveled the world and performed in many famous venues comment, “The PPAC ‘s acoustics and audience visibility are as good as any in the world.” In 1996, the vision of a small committee to provide an Arts Center for the Paradise community became a reality after nearly twenty years. Not yet complete, performances were watched from plastic patio chairs, the stage curtains were in progress, lighting was minimal, and there was a lack of good sound equipment. Since enthusiasm for the fund drives was waning, the Board of Directors elected to borrow sufficient funds to complete theatre in 1999. The privately donated funds were enough to buy the horse but not enough feed it. Meaning, the venue could not sustain operating costs via ticket sales and there were no wealthy patrons or large corperations to step forward and provide the needed capital. Salaries, operating expenses, and loss of money on PPAC sponsored shows slowly pushed the facility to the brink of bankruptcy. In 2009, bankruptcy seemed inevitable because $80,000 was owed to local businesses and previous performers, and there was $70,000 in credit card debt, plus $450,000 due on the mortgage that had only been receiving in-
The mission of the Paradise Performing Arts Center is to provide the community with a state-of-the-art facility for the staging of a variety of cultural and public events. terest payments. Fortunately, a local businessman loaned the PPAC $80,000 to pay all locals, thus preventing them from being caught in the bankruptcy and creating poor public relations. When all seemed hopeless and serious alternatives were being suggested, even selling the facility, Ginny Jensen came to the rescue. As a part of her will, she left the PPAC $250,000. Much discussion followed. What to do with the money? Obviously, 1) pay back the $80,000, 2) pay off the credit card debt, and 3) pay down the mortgage. Of course, number one and two were logical, but what about number three? If the $450,000 mortgage was reduced to $100,000 using the remainder of the gift, the PPAC would be in the same situation: a mortgage and no operating capital. After much consideration, the Board of Directors made a bold move. Maintain no salaried employees, promote no shows, oper-
ate the facility with volunteers, become a rental facility only, pay the lender 12.5% of the mortgage, and negotiate a new loan. Did the bold move work? By the time this article is published, the PPAC will have no debt and the mortgage will be less than $30,000. How? Volunteers! The on call technical staff is paid by the renter. Volunteers provide the other necessary duties, such as Lucy Vette who does the grounds maintenance. Most significant was the two gentlemen from the Board who stepped forward to become the Facility Manager. Firstw as Bert Chumbler, who after two years moved to Oregon. Bert was replaced with Kent Sprague. Kent picked up where Bert left off and has completed a phenomenal number of needed repairs and upgrades. He is the backbone and heart of the success the PPAC is presently experiencing. Now it’s your turn to help. Only 30 donations of $1000 and the mortgage is gone!
