Welcome to
PARADISE from the Mayor
W
elcome to the Town of Paradise! I have found our charming small town to be all its name implies. The scenery is beautiful, the weather is great and the people are the friendliest I have ever met. We have picturesque hiking, beautiful parks, Jody JONES the Yellowstone Kelly Heritage Bike/Walking Mayor Trail, concerts and symTown of Paradise phonies at the Paradise Performing Arts Center, local plays in the intimate setting of Theatre on the Ridge and many fun festivals that are great family events. I hope you enjoy your stay in Paradise—for a short visit or a lifetime! Visit often and recreate in the best small town in California, a true Paradise.
MAGALIA and the UPPER RIDGE
from the Butte County Supervisor
L
iving in the forest is definitely what makes Magalia and the Upper Ridge a great place to live. I always love the early morning or late evening sunlight filtering through the native pine, oak, and cedar trees. Critters, especially the deer, roam freely through the neighborhoods. This area is definitely something for those desiring to get back in touch with nature. A home within the forest comes with a caveat– the higher probability of a forest fire.
Our local community has been working hard on improving forest health and creating fire resilience. Earlier this year the Butte County Fire Safe Council received its largest grant yet, an award of $499,100 for the Butte Creek Forest Health Project. Much of the forest thinning work around Magalia is funded by grants such as this one. The Butte County Fire Safe Council and Paradise Ridge Fire Safe Council websites have lots of great information on wildfire education and mitigation.

PARADISE... All its name implies
R
esting like an emerald necklace at the throat of the northern Sierra, the town appropriately named Paradise grew from a series of overland stage stops with picturesque names like Toadtown, Dogtown and Whiskey Flat. Where early travelers took pleasure in brief rest stops under the cooling pines of Paradise, visitors now plan extended weekends with no other destination in mind. The beauty of the Paradise Ridge beckons today as it did when the first gold miners staked their claims along the area’s sparkling rivers and streams. Then and now, Clear Creek, Butte Creek and the branches of the Feather River, fed by Ridge springs and high country snowmelt, carve their way through the stunning canyons. Wildflowers abound along Paradise roads and byways and deer still browse gracefully among the tall pines. The “gold fever” that led to the settlement of the Paradise Ridge also gave rise to one of the area’s most popular annual events, a four-day “Gold Nugget Days” celebration. In 1859, a 54 pound gold nugget was brought to Dogtown from the Willard mine, and the discovery of the “Dogtown Nugget” is now acclaimed every year with a colorful parade, hilarious Donkey Derby, concerts, dances, variety shows, exhibits and contests. Grizzled miners were followed to Paradise by men and women
with a larger vision. These hardy souls saw gold in the emerald green of the Ridge, founded a thriving lumber industry, and planted the apple orchards for which Paradise became famous. Now every fall, “Johnny Appleseed Days” commemorates those versatile pioneers whose efforts at one time afforded Paradise its title of “the Apple center of California.” The entire town participates in a joyful two day festival of games, displays, music and food honoring the apple. Recently, local resident Bill Hartley discovered that Paradise was home to “Yellowstone” Kelly–one of the most celebrated and respected figures in the history of the American west. Luther Sage “Yellowstone” Kelly was an American soldier, hunter, trapper, scout, adventurer and friend of Native Americans. He was a confidante of President Theodore Roosevelt and was nominated for the Medal of Honor. After a life of adventure he and his wife May retired to Paradise and established a productive orchard on Clark Road. The Yellowstone Kelly Heritage Trail was renamed in his honor in May of 2017. The ruts of the Overland Stage route through Paradise were filled and paved long ago, but visitors to this uniquely scenic locale still find both delight in its beauty and a warm welcome in its people. Paradise is indeed all that its name implies.

DO YOU LOVE YOUR DENTIST? “I have found my new dentist. Dr. Parrott and his staff are phenomenal.” ~ James C. “First time at the dentist where I felt relaxed. I’ll recommend them to everyone I know for real... All the staff are professional. Friendly and gentle just like they advertise.” ~ Jared J. “Found this dental office in the Ridge Preferred Professionals magazine. So glad I did. In excruciating pain from an abscessed tooth. Called, got a next morning appt. The office is spectacular! Clean and neat. The Staff are amazing people. So kind, extremely efficient, well informed and knowledgeable. Did a full exam with x-rays and told me the good and the bad and set up a plan. Going back on Friday to get started. Answered all my questions, were indeed very gentle and took their time with me. I will recommend this office to everyone I know!!” ~ Terry L.
“Today was my first time coming to Paradise Gentle Dentistry and meeting Dr. Parrot and his staff, they are absolutely amazing and awesome. Not only did they make me feel like family, they were fun and their office was beautiful and relaxing. They show you around and explain everything to you. My sister raves about them and now I know why. I could not be more satisfied with my decision to come here. Dr. Parrott, Carey and Stacey you Rock. Keep being awesome... see you next time!” ~ Corinne S. “Dr. Parrott is the most amazing dentist I’ve ever gone to. He is doctor painless for sure! Because he can give you a shot, and you won’t even know it. I don’t dread the dentist anymore.” ~ Scott M.

BUTTE CREEK TRAIL, WEST
LITTLE PEARL
PARADISE LAKE
HIKING continued from page 9 Paradise Lake (up to 9.5 miles, round trip) Although no swimming is allowed (this is the town’s drinking water), Paradise Lake is one of the most beautiful places to either hike or ride mountain bikes. There is a fee for using the parking areas (located from Coutelenc Rd. off of either Lucretia or Northlake Rd.), but you can also purchase an annual pass from the Paradise Irrigation District once you decide to become a regular visitor.
Yellowstone Kelley Heritage Trailway (up to 11 miles, round trip) Recently renamed in honor of past resident, Yellowstone Kelly, a famed Western figure, this old railroad bed, which runs through the middle of town, is paved and therefore ideal for all kinds of bicycles, tricycles and the like. In fact, locals usually call it “the bike path.” It can be accessed at any one of several cross-streets, but the best place to park if you have kids with you is at the Burger King, at 7300 Skyway, as that will give you access to both bathrooms and snacks.
of the road, toward Lime Saddle, with views of Lake Oroville provided the lake is not down too far. But when it is, check out the remains of the old lime kiln, for which the area gets its name, down next to the shore of the lake.
Butte Creek Trail West (up to 5 or 6 miles round trip) For dramatic vistas of Butte Creek (and the chance to try some legal gold panning if you are feeling lucky) drive up the Skyway some 9 miles from Wagstaff, then turn left on Powellton Road and continue on the middle road, which is now Doe Mill. At the bottom, cross over the bridge, begin heading up the other side and look for the white trail marker on your left, parking anywhere you have room. Then follow the trail downstream for as far as you feel like going. This is especially lovely in the spring.
• ROCKS • MINERALS • CRYSTALS • GIFTS • JEWELRY • KIDS KORNER • FOSSILS
Little Pearl (1 mile, round trip) The easiest way to find this aptly named and popular local swimming hole is to drive up the Skyway past the Magalia Reservoir, then park in the cleared area at Skyway and Dogtown Road. Then (very carefully!) cross the Skyway and walk up to the dirt and gravel road directly across from Dogtown Rd. Go down this road about a minute, then look for a service road, immediately in front of you. After 9 or 10 minutes along this road (which parallels Little Butte Creek), look for the switch-back trail down to Little Pearl. Because this trail is steep in spots, bring good walking shoes.
Lime Saddle Trail (up to 3 miles round trip) Drive down Pentz Road and then left on Lime Saddle Road, parking just outside the entrance to the Lime Saddle Campground. From here, you can take the trail that starts on the left of the paved road leading into the campground or you can take the one on the other side

A Paradise For
WILDLIFE, TOO
I
Mendon’s Nursery The landscape has changed over the years, but the service hasn’t; still your full service nursery serving our customers throughout the north valley and beyond.
—But Don’t Worry!
f you’re visiting Paradise or are new to our Ridge communities, you’ve likely noticed a variety of wildlife makes their home here, too. Squirrels scamper across power lines (and tempt fate as they dodge quickly across two-lane roads) while deer often bed themselves down in the shade of tall pines (when they’re not munching on your rose bushes!). But for folks unaccustomed to all the creatures who also call Paradise home, here are a few tips: Never feed wildlife! Wild animals are our neighbors, but don’t extend hospitality by setting out food for them. Wild animals fare better when they keep their distance from humans, allowing them to remain fully wild. Keep pet food indoors! Pet food left outside your home will draw in wildlife—including bears!—and the more “human food” they eat, the more they’ll seek it out. If bears or other wild animals damage property in their search for more human food (or threaten human safety), they might be killed; feeding wild animals is “dead” wrong for these animals. Don’t feed the deer! They can forage on their own and don’t need to be fed. And, while it might be cute to feed squirrels and raccoons, they, too, can become aggressive.

An Award Winning Candy Factory Right Here in Paradise
PARADISE ICE on
Returns
T
he Paradise Ice Rink will return to the Terry Ashe Recreation Center this November for its sixth season. Known as Paradise on Ice, the rink has been the most popular recreational activity on the Ridge since its inception in 2013, attracting thousands of skaters and visitors each year. The rink stays open daily (weather permitting) through mid-January 2019. The rink is 82’ x 50’ and is set up in and on the outdoor basketball court at the Recreation Center at 6626 Skyway. Skates are included with the price of admission for unlimited skating each day. The concession stand is also open with a variety of tasty menu items. The rink features lessons, music, and special events such as Santa’s Arrival.
Founded in 1969, Joy Lyn’s Candies in Paradise has been making premium chocolates and candies using only the best and freshest ingredients. Owners Pam and Bill Hartley take pride in their chocolates and carry on the tradition of old-fashion quality with small batch candy making in copper kettles. They make over 100 different chocolates and specialty candies including artisan Truffles, English Toffee, Divinity, Honeycomb and their award winning Sierra Nevada Beer Peanut Brittle and Hop Salt Stout Caramels. The family run business is proud to offer seasonal specialties like fresh caramel apples in the fall and chocolate dipped strawberries in the spring. They are well-known throughout the region for their handcrafted all chocolate Easter baskets, bunnies and eggs. The Hartleys founded the Paradise Chocolate Fest in 2006 as a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club. The annual Chocolate Fest is now its own non-profit and benefits over 20 youth organizations on the Ridge. Families love to stop by Joy Lyn’s Candies and get a free sample and watch candy making through the chocolate factory window. Content sponsored by: Joy Lyn’s Heavenly Candies
The Paradise Ice Rink is a picture perfect post card setting under the pines – a very special destination for the entire family. Schools, families, churches and other organizations have the opportunity to schedule times to enjoy the facility. The Rink also offers advertising spaces on the dasher boards and many different sponsorship options to show your support and gain great visibility for your business or organization.

COMMUNITY T HEALTHCARE: A dream fulfilled
By Maureen M. Wisener Assistant Vice President, Marketing & Communications Feather River Hospital
The focus was to ensure that fresh air, sunshine, clean water, and other natural elements were part of the “therapy” for ill patients, and to that end they ultimately purchased (much in their own names and later deeded to the corporation that built the first hospital) a total of 107 acres of property on the edge of the Feather River Canyon. This beautiful spot was ideal for all that their dream envisioned. The small hospital, Feather River Sanitarium, opened with 15 beds in early December, 1950. In the mid-60s, the hospital desperately needed to expand to accommodate the growing needs of the community. The new hospital provided 50 acute care beds, and a 97bed extended care facility, the forerunner of a skilled nursing facility. In addition to the expected services of hospitals, Feather River Hospital also provided a barbershop and a beauty shop for patient needs. Lat-

he dream of a community healthcare center with strong health education programs, along with medical and surgical services was a vision shared by four local physicians. These doctors, Dr. Merritt Horning, Dr. Dean Hoiland, Dr. C.C. Landis, and Dr. Glen Blackwelder, pooled their resources and sought out contributions to help make that dream a reality here on the Ridge.

er, many of the extended care beds were converted to acute care beds, and the hospital was licensed for 101 acute beds and 20 skilled nursing beds. Additional services and programs were added to support key needs, such as rural health clinics, diagnostic imaging, laboratory services, physical therapy, diabetes education programs, cancer care, hospice and home care services, and many more. In 2012, an enlarged Emergency Services department was added to the campus, and telemedicine services for specialties such as neurology are now routine. Adventist Health Feather River operates programs and services in many locations in Paradise, Magalia, Chico and Corning, endeavoring to locate key services where they are most convenient for the patients. Many of these programs have resulted from the advantage that this community hospital has as part of a larger health care system. Adventist Health is a broad system of hospitals in four states, providing system expertise, access to key technologies, and support for growth and expansion. Today, Adventist Health Feather River employs more than 1100 individuals, is honored to be supported by more than 400 volunteers, and partners with about 200 physicians and advance practice professionals to care for our community 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

All computer headaches can be solved by the local guys! Really! You wake up in the morning. Get a cup of coffee. Start up your laptop. And…..ERRORS! It worked great last night. What could have happened? No one else used this computer. You did not do anything weird, did not click on any link to watch that dog ride a skateboard! Dang it! Before you throw it out the window, you remember that nice company on Skyway, Gray Matter Computing. In business since 1991 – an eternity in the computer world. They must be doing something right! So, you call them. Take in the computer. And pick it up the next day – all working! It did not matter if it was a virus, a Windows Update, or a hard drive failure. They can fix it all. They do about 100 computers a month….for 26 years…..every month…..every year! Don’t worry, they can fix it! Really! Content sponsored by: Gray Matter Computing

By Torey Feldhaus If cycling is your thing, Paradise has an adventure for you! The mountains are calling. There is no shortage of cycling opportunities in and around Paradise. The Ridge’s potential for a healthy, active cycling community is growing. For road riders, one of the greatest Century road rides–The Wildflower–comes directly through Paradise while climbing up the beautiful Honey Run Road. With only a few roads through town that are bicycle friendly and safe, it’s highly encouraged to bike the Yellow Stone Kelly Heritage Trail which was once the old railroad grade. This is a mellow 5.2 mile (one way) paved segment that starts just below Neal road and travels uphill to the top of Pentz and Skyway. If you pedal a little further, you will reach Magalia which has endless trail opportunities. One is the dirt trail alongside Paradise Lake. This route is another out and back with one-way mileage of 4.3 miles. If single track is your preference, look no further than the dirt loam trails of the POA and nearby BLM trails at the end of Ponderosa Road. Be sure to bring your climbing legs to go up and down the canyons! If you prefer long gravel and dirt roads, you can log as many miles that you want. With endless logging roads, numerous rail trails, the mountains near Paradise have it. If you prefer BMX riding, Chico currently has the spots to shred. It’s a possibility that in the near future, Paradise may have a BMX spot of its own.

he Paradise Ridge offers a wealth of good old-fashioned family fun. With many natural wonders for our children to experience, you are never far from a scenic park to go hiking, a lake to go fishing, or a swimming hole to take a dip in. Ask any of the locals and they will tell you stories of their favorite spots, many of which they have been going to since they were children.
PAA has provided our three children with a robust, well-rounded education. We believe they are prepared to compete academically at any level and this belief has been reinforced by national exam scores and by our first-born’s successful college experience. We are truly grateful to PAA. —Mark Carter, MD

P
HERITAGE TRAIL
aradise loves its pioneer history, and we have a trail to prove it. The trail honors Luther Sage “Yellowstone” Kelly, along with those pioneers—Native Americans, women, men, families— who settled on the Paradise Ridge. The trail, which follows the old Butte County Railroad route, begins at Pearson Road behind the Paradise Depot Museum.
The trail was envisioned by the Gold Nugget Museum. It became a reality with the financial sponsorship of the Rotary Club of Paradise, as well as many individual sponsorships. Community volunteers from the Gold Nugget Museum, Pair-O-Dice Chapter E.Clampus Vitus 7-11, and the Rotary Club of Paradise installed the plaques.
The trail was dedicated, with pomp and ceremony, on September 24, 2017. Phase two of the project, completed in June 2018, involved the installation of plaques displaying photographs and biographies of the pioneers and pioneer families. As you set foot on the Yellowstone Kelly Heritage trail and take a walk through Paradise’s history, ponder the contributions of those who helped build our community.

Use Integrative Medicine for Immune Support ALL Year Long In spring, hay fever, environmental allergies and rashes are prevalent. Prevention is best. Strengthen your immune system with appropriate herbal medications and supplements before the spring winds carry pollens/allergens into your body. Once symptoms arise, herbal medicines or supplements can be used to treat them: there are many options available to create an ‘antihistamine-like’ effect that are much safer. In summer the hot days can lead to an excess of fire energy: our bodies crave cooling foods and lots of fluids. Consuming raw, cold foods and drinks in excess weakens our digestive fire, possibly leading to digestion problems, especially diarrhea. Summer can bring out the irritability and anger of heat in our emotions. Both can weaken the immune system. To keep your immune system optimal, balance the cooling nature of summer foods with hot teas and foods. Stay hydrated and keep emotions cool. As autumn approaches, days are cooler, shorter and makes one more vulnerable to common colds and allergies. Days are windy: wear a scarf to protect neck and body. Prepare for winter in autumn by eating more warming and cooked foods, and take herbal medications or supplements to boost the immune system and ward off winter colds and flus. Prepare your immune system naturally, with a healthy diet, plenty of sleep. Herbs and supplements help prevent winter illness. Stay warm, eat hot soups and foods with warming spices, and drink hot herbal teas. If common cold/flu (respiratory or stomach) symptoms start, use natural herbal medicines and supplements with anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties to ward off the illness. Natural medicines do work and do not have the multitude of side effects that antibiotics can have. All year long, consult with your integrative healthcare practitioner for immune system support! FLAGS

PARADE
American flags, placed by volunteers enhance Skyway on Memorial Day, July 4th and Veteran’s Day.
ne thing that makes Paradise unique is its Parade of Flags that graces the Skyway from Neal to Bille and on Elliott Road from Skyway to Maxwell three times a year. A lot of history and hard work goes into this event. Back in 1998, then Planning Commissioner Ray Dalton read an article about a gentleman named Bill Wells who was looking for a way to honor fellow Americans by installing a series of flags up and down the Skyway. Ray met with Bill and in 1998 construction of the sleeves began. Ray and a team of volunteers borrowed a compressor and drill from PID and began drilling holes and placing flag sleeves…over 1100 in total.
1999 was the first year the flags were put out, and the participation from the community was overwhelming. What was first thought to be a few hundred flags added each year was over 1000 in its first year! So now back to 2017 and the tradition couldn’t be any stronger. With the flags stored at the Paradise Elks Lodge, different service groups and volunteers form 11 teams and start placing flags in the wee hours of the morning with the assistance of the VIPS to help provide safety and traffic control. The flags are regularly washed and replaced as needed and the sleeves are repaired and replaced. It has been an honor to serve as President of the Parade of Flags, and I look forward to keeping the tradition going strong for many years to come.

I was one of the world’s worst snorers (and if you don’t believe me, you can ask my wife!). I have a severe case of Sleep Apnea. I tried every apparatus available from CPAP to Oxygen, however all of the machines were noisy, inconvenient and kept both my wife and I awake. Dr. Scott suggested a custom-made snore guard. After 15 years I am healthy and sleeping well (and so is the neighborhood!). It’s well worth the money and definitely less expensive than the CPAP or rented oxygen machine. I am on my second appliance and feel better than ever. - Bob

I
LOVE living on the Paradise Ridge! This is a safe environment with clean air and friendly people, a place that I have been able to call home most of my life. It’s truly a wonderful community and place to live. Paradise is an undiscovered gem. Housing in both Paradise and Magalia is very affordable with most parcel sizes large enough to ensure privacy. While we have low inventory and prices on-the-rise, not unlike the rest of California, the Paradise Ridge is still both a bargain and a solid investment.
The Town of Paradise provides high quality police and fire protection as well as a good education and animal control. Traffic? I am not patient enough for that. In Paradise you can travel anywhere in around 10 minutes. This will take you to beautiful parks, a wonderful Performing Arts Center, endless hiking, to the many community events, fantastic doctors and as well as a renowned hospital. As the president of the Paradise Association of Realtors, I have a unique perspective. I am able to talk with people from other Real Estate Associations all over the state and every time the conversations affirm I truly appreciate our “Paradise.”

his stunning private 27 acre park on the Upper Ridge in Stirling City was dedicated in 1987 by Harry A Merlo, founding president of Louisiana-Pacific Corporation, in memory of his mother. The park was designed using a master plan created by the CSU Chico Parks and Recreation Department. It features three large ponds, individual and group picnic areas, restrooms, horseshoe pits, a rose garden, bocce court, nature trails, and outdoor wedding chapel. Statues of children cavort among the greenery, and the park is home to a replica of Michelangelo’s Pieta, cast from a mold of the original sculpture housed in in St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City. Merlo Park is open May to October, 10 AM to 7 PM Thursday through Sunday. Smoking and pets are prohibited. The park is about 30 minutes from Paradise by car. Head up the Skyway to Stirling City, then take the first right and the park will be about ¼ mile on the left. Bring quarters, so you can buy food to feed the fish. Visitors are advised to call first, as the park is subject to closure for private events. 873-1658.

Consumer shipping tips from your local shipping experts Shipping a package can be hectic, and thanks to a sometimes frenetic pace, it can be easy to put things on the back burner. Shipping can be expensive, especially for last-minute mailings. But the following are a handful of ways to ship smart and save both time and money. Use a sturdy box that’s the right size, make sure to include enough packing material and tape it securely. PostNet has all the shipping supplies you need in one place. Don’t have supplies at home? We’ve got you covered. Ship directly to the recipient. Just be sure to have the recipient’s correct address when you come into PostNet. Ship early. The longer you wait to ship, the more you can expect to pay if you expect that package to arrive on time. For example, did you know there are remote parts of the contiguous lower 48 states where even now it may take an extra day for package delivery – versus sending to large cities, where it’s possible to get items there in the same day even? Insure the items you ship. While the industry is often remarkably effective at delivering packages intact and on time, items are sometimes lost or damaged. By insuring your packages, you’re ensuring you won’t be out of luck should your package be lost, damaged or stolen before it reaches its destination. Need overnight shipping? Need stamps? Let us do the work for you. PostNet has been Your Friendly Neighborhood Business Center for 12 years. We take the hassle out of all your business shipping dilemmas. After several years the Rose family relocated and sold the business to Fred and Joanne Cosgrove. They became an important and involved part of the ridge business community. Their girls, Pam and Kim, were raised in the family business. While the elder Cosgroves’ retired the Cosgrove family continues the daily operations with longtime manager, Eric Smith.

Do you want to make a difference in your Community? Make new friends? Have some fun? Quota International of Paradise might be just the Club for you!
Club donated Quota Bears to Paradise Police to comfort children in distressing situations.
New project, “Cops ‘n Kids” Reading Program with Friends of the Library and Paradise PD.
Founded in 1919 as the first women’s service club in the United States by a visionary woman, Wanda Fry Joiner, to serve disadvantaged women and children and the speech and hearing impaired. Locally our Paradise club was chartered in September 1975 with the goal of empowering women through opportunities for fellowship, leadership and service. We have flexible attendance requirements, “Come as You Are” dress codes, reasonable dues, and lots of fun as we move through our numerous fundraising projects. Many of our members have made lifelong friendships, been empowered through leadership opportunities, while others have used their many talents and skills to benefit the community. Our fundraising projects are multifaceted and we are always open to new ideas. Thousands of dollars are donated back to the community and to other non-profits, as well as our many busy hands providing service when and where needed. Quota often collaborates with other philanthropic organizations to further our fundraising efforts.
Check us out…. we meet twice monthly, second and fourth Wednesdays at Craig Memorial Church, on Pearson Road, in Paradise.

S.T.A.R.S
Sheriff’s Team of : Active Residents in Service
The Butte County Sheriff’s Office S.T.A.R.S. volunteer program began in 1993 with a group of 16 senior volunteers. Since that time the program has blossomed into a team of 80 volunteers who are dedicated to serving their communities. Initially, S.T.A.R.S. stood for the Sheriff’s Team of Active Retired Seniors. The minimum age has since been lowered to 45, and we are excited to announce that we are now opening this volunteer opportunity up to residents ages 21 and over. With this significant change comes an updated name; S.T.A.R.S. now stands for the Sheriff’s Team of Active Residents in Service. STARS must be 21 years of age or older and must pass a background investigation in addition to attending a basic training academy. STARS volunteers are assigned to one of three areas, based on where they
reside or choose to work: Oroville, Chico or Magalia. STARS volunteers represent Butte County Sheriff’s Office in all volunteer related activities and are therefore expected to maintain a very high level of integrity. STARS volunteers assist BCSO deputies and personnel with routine tasks in many areas of the department. STARS volunteers also provide many services to the community including extra patrols, vacation checks, graffiti eradication, and crime prevention. STARS volunteers are an important part of BCSO’s ongoing effort to foster positive relationships between law enforcement and our community. STARS volunteers are also called upon during emergency incidents, such as floods, fires and other natural disasters, to assist law enforcement personnel. If you are interested in joining the STARS Volunteer Program, visit our website at www.buttecounty.net/ sheriffcoroner or call 538-7820.

Paradise High School Band & Chorus The Paradise High School Band is unique to our area. In addition to performing at local events, such as Memorial Day and Gold Nugget Days, The “Pride of Paradise is one of the few bands north of Sacramento that competes in marching competitions throughout the State. Joined by the Flag Team and I.D. Unit (known as the Band Auxiliary) the PHS Band has also been invited to march down Main Street Disneyland on five different occasions! Known for their energetic routines and commitment to excellence, the PHS Band is a great class to make friends and go on new adventures. Paradise Unified School District begins teaching instruments in the sixth grade. If your child chooses to join band then one day they may also have the chance to be a member of the Pride of Paradise!
The Paradise High School Band marching down Skyway in the annual Gold Nugget days parad.e. The Paradise HS Chorus and Band are the only two music groups offered by high schools on the Ridge. They receive some funding but are also constantly fundraising to purchase new equipment, etc. If you would like to know when their next fundraiser is, or just drop them a donation please contact Band Director Bob Schofield for more information. He can be reached at (530) 872-6425, x 3089.
Like to sing? Then the Paradise High School Chorus is the class for you! This well respected group performs at special events all school year long. In the past they have toured the Northwest United States, sang at the inauguration of the Governor of California and, most recently, traveled to Hawaii to perform at the 75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor. The Paradise High School Chorus also sings at local events such as Christmas Tree Lightings, football games and local concerts. Many of their graduates have gone on to sing professionally, teach music, or just sing in their local community or church choirs.

FAITH
in Paradise
By Donald Gene Criswell, Paradise Lutheran Church
H
istorically, the hubs for religious, social and service functions in Paradise were churches. They sponsored rummage sales, potluck dinners, summer bible camps, Scouts, sports and other activities for kids. Churches were almost the only venues for weddings and were the first to offer help when loved ones passed away. Because I was raised as a Lutheran, it seemed natural to me that our lives were anchored by faith and organized around our churches. There were so many places of worship that not much happened on Sundays until “after church.” Faith and grace are spiritual foundations for many religions, but good works also provide a tangible measure of a community’s heart, demonstrations of its neighborly love. Years ago, Paradise Lutheran Church began Fridays for Lunch, a freelunch program which was soon adopted by other churches and organizations and expanded to Lunch with Us. Daily, nutritious meals are served by area churches free to anyone

who’s hungry. The lunches are a refuge and social center for hundreds of people. Recently, as I was bussing tables on a rainy Friday, a man left his table at The PlaCe—the Paradise Lutheran social hall—after having lunch and chatting with friends. Whistling, he strolled toward the door and waved at the kitchen staff. Even as he walked out into the rain, he whistled his cheery tune for all to hear. He was a happy fellow. I knew then that Paradise is still a good-hearted town. In Paradise we help our neighbors; it’s how we demonstrate our faith in our community.
