IT’S CHRISTMAS!
December 2013

Well - very nearly. It’s a fantastic time of year - but the festive season can be difficult for pets. Their usual home environment changes, becoming cluttered with strange trees, flowers, bright decorations, interesting packages, noises such as crackers and fireworks, there are lots of interesting food smells and there may be unfamiliar visitors in the house.

Because we’re busy trying to do a hundred things at once over the Christmas period, pets may not be as closely observed as usual and can gain access to dustbins, decorations, plants and so on.

Please keep your animals safe this Christmas and if you’re at all suspicious they have eaten something they shouldn’t have, contact us immediately.

Pet of the Month
The incredible story of the cat that was shot by
Ruth Simmons (VET)
Iolo is making a great recovery and his owners are having difficulty trying to keep him quiet and stop him jumping as he is obviously feeling a lot more comfortable. He doesn’t enjoy coming back to see me for his check-ups and tries to camouflage himself against the black consult table!
SENIOR PETS
Meet Iolo, a 1 year old male, black, domestic short hair cat. Sadly he suffered considerable injury when he was shot. Iolo’s Mum, heard the shot and saw people driving off. After some time searching she found Iolo in the field yowling and very distressed. Mrs Dawson immediately called the Out of Hours service and I met them at Dalston where I admitted Iolo for x-rays and strong pain relief. This is the chest x-ray taken that night. The bullet has entered on the left hand side, hit the shoulder blade causing it to fracture in several places. The bullet has then disintegrated and stopped at the right hand side. Iolo is a very lucky cat as the bullet missed several vital structures, including his lungs, heart and spine! The best treatment for this injury was strict rest and anti-inflammatory/pain relief.
Senior Health Checks are being carried out throughout December. Please bring your golden oldie in for a FREE MOT.
TORTOISE PARTY
Unsurprisingly, Iolo was in a lot of pain and shock. We kept him in on intravenous fluids and regular pain relief for 36 hours. He was dull, depressed, very reluctant to move his neck and left leg and wouldn’t even eat much. However, on Saturday morning when Mr and Mrs Dawson came to visit him there was a huge improvement, suddenly he was purring & eating and seemed a different cat! We suspect he was pining for his owners and the decision was made to send him home for plenty of rest, where he would be a lot happier!

Some pictures from the pre-hibernation check held at Dalston. It was a great success!
