NEWS ASK THE VET by Laura McKirdy The power of the microchip In 2016 it will become compulsory for dogs in England to be microchipped. If you’ve been thinking about getting it done now - this tale will help you decide. A few weeks ago, Lizzy the Patterdale Terrier went missing. Owner Alison Taylor, who works as a Receptionist at Paragon, feared the worst because ten month old Lizzy had never been known to stray far. Alison and her family spent hours searching. They put up posters, called animal refuges and ran a Facebook campaign. But there were no sightings. Then - two weeks after Lizzy disappeared - Alison got a surprising phone call. ‘A dog warden called to say Lizzy had been found wandering along a road in Ormskirk. They’d been able to trace her back to me because of her microchip.’ Alison may never know how Lizzy came to be on a road a good two-hour drive from her home, but she has her suspicions. ‘I believe she was stolen, probably to be used in some sort of dog sport. Some of her curls have been cut off and there were marks on her face. She’s been checked by Vets at Paragon and thankfully she’s fine although she has lost weight.’ Lizzy enjoyed a brief spell of fame, with appearances on Border TV and in the papers, but now she’s just happy to be back home, safe and sound.
