Edit Speak Dear Readers, October marks the beginning of festivities in India. With so many reasons to celebrate, it's easy to lose ourselves in feasting and merrymaking, forgetting about the toll it will take on our digestive system. The October issue is dedicated to the importance of healthy digestion. In the opening article, we explain the functioning of the digestive system from an Ayurvedic perspective and talk about the relationship our mind and body share - a connection often ignored by a lot of people. The Kid's Special section elaborates on essential concepts like ama, ojas, and the formation of dhatus in the body. Common digestion-related problems among children are discussed, along with the side effects of eating junk food. In our Success Story, we follow a patient's decade long fight against ulcerative colitis and learn how Ayurveda was able to bring relief within just 3 months. We also deal with premature menopause in the Sexual Health section, explaining its causes and the measures that can be taken to prevent it. On the lighter side, actress Juhi Chawla shares her opinion about Ayurveda. She stresses on the importance of natural living and the need to find a balance between conventional medicine and Ayurvedic principles. Our inimitable Steven Rudolph inspires us (once again) with his article “The One Thing You Must Do To Succeed'. He talks about the three kinds of people who are destined not to succeed and what you can do to avoid falling in this category! From our recipe book, we bring you a delicious recipe for ginger jam, which will be perfect for the winter months. In another section, we deal with the importance of salads and guide you on how to eat according to your body type. With each issue of Paramayu, we try and share the wisdom that allowed our forefathers to have healthy and meaningful lives. Our October edition is no different, and we hope it succeeds in changing your perspective for the better. Wish you all a very joyous festive season! As usual, please send in your feedback at editor@jiva.com. Also, check out our website www.jiva.com to learn more about JIVA and Ayurveda.

President’s Message A

ccording to Ayurveda, the root cause of all diseases is poor digestion. Whether you're suffering from physical, emotional, or even mental illnesses, it can all be traced back to improper functioning of the digestive system. Ayurveda has identified 13 types of agni (biological enzymes) that are related to the process of digesting, metabolizing, and assimilating food into the body. They can broadly be classified into three groups – jatharagni (related to digestion of food), dhatvagni (related to tissue metabolism) and bhutagni (related to molecular metabolism). If you have high agni, you are assured of good health. However, if the fire is low, you will be opening yourself up to a wide range of medical problems, and lower your quality of life. How do you prevent that from happening? There are four ways to keep agni burning bright within your body. To begin with, you must ensure that the pranvayu (oxygen) around you is shuddha (fresh). Life in a concrete jungle that's thick with smoke and pollution makes it difficult to do that, but it's important to live in an environment that has plenty of greenery. Exercise in a park in the morning and try and have some plants in your home that can purify the air. The next thing to do is have a nutritious diet. Packed, tinned, or frozen food items that contain a lot of preservatives are considered to be taamsik and it can adversely affect your agni. Eat wholesome meals that are freshly prepared, since they are sattvik in nature and can boost the fire inside your body. If food is important, how can water be far away? Water is essential to life. It cleans the intestines, removes toxins from the body, and helps in the assimilation of nutrition. For this reason, it's necessary to keep yourself properly hydrated at all times. However, keep this one tip in mind – do not drink water at least an hour before or after having your meals. It's considered an unhealthy practice to do so and can adversely impact the body's agni. And now we come to the final component of building a healthy body – your thoughts. Our thoughts shape the world and the world around us shapes our thoughts. It's a complicated and intricate process, but there's no denying that good, happy thoughts contribute greatly to our overall health and wellbeing. So, stay positive and surround yourself pure, sattvik thoughts at all times.

“The root cause of all diseases can be traced back to a poor digestive system.”

If you'd like to share your thoughts or personal experiences on this topic, feel free to write in to me at rishi@jiva.com. Wish you peace, health, and happiness.

Best Wishes,

Dr. Partap Chauhan

Digestive System

Though the digestive system works by itself, our mind influences it greatly. A calm and peaceful mind allows the digestive system to work well and carry out its process properly. On the other hand, a disturbed and depressed mind affects the functioning of the digestive system.

Dr. Abhijit Mhalank We never realize how beautiful our digestive system is, perhaps because it is inside our body, and we don't get to see it in action. It works on its own, and yet, does the job perfectly. It is because of this system that our tissues receive nutrition and energy to carry out their functions. So, in a way, the digestive system feeds all other systems and organs to keep them alive.

6 – Paramayu – Oct. 2015

S

cientists have made huge efforts to understand how the digestive system really works; how ingested food gets broken down mechanically as well as chemically; how useful nutrients get absorbed, while waste materials are thrown out in the form of urine and stool. In their view, our digestive system is like a huge machine. Organs like the stomach, intestines, and liver are all parts of this machine. They secrete various enzymes and hormones that act upon proteins, carbohydrates, and fats, breaking them down into smaller molecules so that they can be absorbed by the body.

Ayurveda & Digestion Thousands of years ago, our Indian sages were fascinated by the digestive system and tried to understand its functioning. They explained it through a simple design - just as food is cooked over fire in the kitchen, a fire in our stomach (called 'Jatharagni') cooks the food that we eat. All food items are made up of five elements- ether, air, fire,

Oct. 2015 – Paramayu – 7

water, and earth. The action of Jatharagni digests food and converts them into a soft, viscous fluid called 'ahar ras'. This ahar ras is further cooked by other fires (called 'dhatwagni') so that new dhatus (or tissues) can be formed. If this whole process goes on well, our tissues receive appropriate nutrition for their own functions, survival, and growth.

Why Digestion Gets Disturbed Factors like eating improper food, observing irregular meal timings, lack of exercise, and mental stress can affect the functioning of agni. As a result, instead of nutritious ahar ras, the digestive system starts producing toxic materials (known as 'ama' in Ayurveda). When this happens, the dhatus do not receive sufficient nutrition and start becoming weaker and weaker. Weak dhatus can easily get diseased. That's why Ayurveda believes ama to be the cause of all diseases.

Nowhere do they have the slightest realization that their actions are affecting the functioning of their digestive system, leading to the formation of toxins in the body and causing numerous health hazards.

Tips to Keep Digestion in Order If we want to ensure the good functioning of the digestive system and prevent formation of toxins, we should do the following things: 

Food timings should be regular. According to Ayurveda, pitta dosha remains dominant from 10 am onwards for next few hours. During these hours, agni gets stimulated and can digest the food better. So lunch should not be had later than 2 pm. In the evening, dinner should be eaten by 8 pm. If meal timings keep changing frequently, it weakens the agni, resulting in indigestion.

Food and its quantity should be according to one's age and constitution. The prevailing season should also be taken into account. Heat-increasing items (like garlic chutney, ginger soup) should be had more during the cold months, while cooling items (like fruits, fresh buttermilk) should be kept for the warm seasons.

Food items like rice, rotis, and vegetables should be warm while eating so that the agni gets stimulated and food gets digested well. Food that has become cold or has just been taken out of the refrigerator should be avoided.

While having food, the mind should be peaceful and the mood pleasant. Doing meditation and pranayam can improve the functioning of the digestive system and help us get rid of toxins.

Mind & Digestion Though the digestive system works by itself, our mind influences it greatly. A calm and peaceful mind allows the digestive system to work well and carry out its process properly. On the other hand, a disturbed and depressed mind affects the functioning of the digestive system. Charak, the foremost authority on Ayurveda, has emphatically stated that even the most ideal food, eaten in appropriate quantity, at the proper time does not get digested, if the mind is full of tension, worry, sorrow or fear. This message of Charak is extremely relevant for the modern world. Today, people eat the most expensive food and spend hours excercising in costly gymnasiums; yet, they have toxins in their body. This is simply because they are burdened by stress and tension. Even when they are eating, they keep talking on their mobile phones or watch TV. 8 – Paramayu – Oct. 2015

If we follow these simple tips for discipline, it can keep our digestive system healthy and save us from several ailments.

ccording to Ayurveda, fire (agni) plays a particularly important role in the digestion process. It breaks down food and creates nourishing dhatus in the body. Jatharagni, or Pachakagni, is the main fire, which resides in our stomach. Apart from that, seven dhatus contain seven dhatwagnis. For the Panchmahabhootas, there are five bhootagnis, which nourish the body. In this manner, 13 main fires have been described in Ayurveda. In addition to this, agni has significance on micro, cellular, and mental levels. Beauty, glowing skin, body heat, sharpness of intelligence, spiritual knowledge, and life force in the body are also influenced by it. In short, one may say that life remains until this fire exists in the body and dies when the fire leaves it.

The main aim of Ayurvedic treatment is to correct digestive fire. Ayurvedic compendia have clearly spoken about 'Kayachikitsa' in the early chapters of Ashtang Ayurveda. Apart from this, the sense organs, mind, and soul must also remain peaceful for an individual to be healthy. This definition of health relates closely to digestion. Keeping all elements in balance and nourishing them is essential and that's only possible if the fire within the body functions well. According to Ayurveda, good digestion provides energy to the body, mind, and soul. That's why if we don’t have food for a few days, our body and mind become weak and get diseased, before the soul finally leaves the body. Undigested food produces a toxic substance called ama. This ama travels to different parts of the body and causes diseases. In amatisaar, amavata, jwara, srotorodh, weakness and laziness, ama is particularly important. On the mental level, ama generates worries, negative thinking, fear, depression, and many other mental disorders. Like a gatekeeper, healthy agni stops diseases from entering the body. It maintains balance within the three doshas and prevents the formation of ama.

Karan Chopra is an entrepreneur and Ayurveda lover living in New Jersey, USA. He has a double major in Biotechnology and Information Technology and Informatics from Rutgers University. He is the co-founder of Sumitra Remedies and sells Ayurvedic products throughout the U.S. My interest in Ayurveda It all started when my father explained the basic concepts of Ayurveda to me. As I read up on the topic, I was amazed at how rich the philosophies presented in our ancient scriptures were.

 Chew food well so that it gets digested properly.

On a professional level, I worked as a pharmaceutical consultant, but I wasn't adding to the common good of those around me. I knew that Ayurveda's holistic approach held answers for me and others searching for a purer and happier lifestyle. It is for this reason that we set up Sumitra Remedies.

Comparison of Ayurveda with modern medicines treatments, its basic aim is to treat fire. Fire is important in the prevention, generation, and treatments of diseases. The following do’s and don'ts for diet are as important as medicine in Ayurveda because they strengthen fire. Ignoring them will only weaken the agni. So fire is important in prevention, generation, and treatments of diseases.

Expert Speak / Q1. What is your opinion on Ayurveda? JC: It is only now that I understand what Ayurveda means. Allopathy can take care of the symptoms of your illness and probably give you some symptomatic relief, quite like a little bandage on top of your wound. However, for the wound to heal and go away properly, the only way is to work on it from the inside. That's what Ayurveda does, that too really nicely by balancing your inner mechanism and soothing and healing it. It nourishes your body to work at its best, thereby taking all your problems away. So the depth of healing and curing only comes from Ayurveda. Q2. Being an actress, how do you maintain a balance in your diet and life? JC: I am glad I am an actress. That way I realize I have to look good, feel good, and remain healthy. For that, I eat in moderation, drink a lot of water, and do yoga. What I do miss right now is a nice long walk! An ideal day for me would be to do some work, manage my family and life at home and also get some exercise, like walking in a park, surrounded by greenery and enjoying the fresh air. Q3. You do not promote excessive use of cell phone. What message do you want to give to the youngsters in this regard? JC: Currently, youngsters are the biggest users of cellphones; so yes, companies target this group by making their products attractive to them. They are the buyers that companies want to conquer. People should be aware of this. All these wifi gadgets, like

The one thing you must do to succeed mobile phones, laptops, i-pads, do not work by magic; they use radio waves. These waves around you are absorbed by your body, and what they could be doing to it will only be realized in the years to come. Overuse of these gadgets and over exposure to this radiation will damage your health someday. Maybe not in months, but probably in a few years. So it's better to be safe, and it's better to use these gadgets when the need arises. Use them wisely and with restraint. Be the master of this technology and use it to your advantage, but don't let it ruin your health!

Q4. What is the secret of your beauty? And how can one maintain the glow on their face? JC: First of all, thank you for the compliment. What I do is eat healthy food. I avoid processed and packaged foods, drink a lot of water, and do yoga, which really helps calm the mind and increase blood circulation. I do everything in moderation and try to stay positive. So I guess, if you are clean on the inside, the glow will show through the skin!

"He who searches for something finds it, so dive deep in the water. However, I, like an unfortunate soul, came to the river and just sat on the bank." ~ Saint Kabir

Q5. What do you think is the future of Ayurvedic treatment in India? JC: Allopathy does give you relief in times of a crisis, but the eventual total cure is only through Ayurveda. Not just in India but in every part of the world, there will come a time when people will just have to turn to natural ways and natural therapy. So embrace Ayurveda and embrace good health!

ost people want success. In fact, I don't think I have encountered anyone to date who has expressed his desire to be a colossal failure. The trouble is that most people aren't willing to do what's necessary to reach that success. There are many prescriptions that will get you to achieve your goals, but one important fundamental ingredient in achieving your potential is going deep into whatever you are striving to do.

The 3 Types of People Who Fail As George Leonard points out in his book "Mastery", there are three types of people who fail to become accomplished: dabblers, obsessives and hackers. The dabblers keep dipping their toes in the water, but never jump in. The obsessives jump in with full enthusiasm, but after making a good deal of noise and splashing about, their initial enthusiasm quickly wanes and

18 – Paramayu – Oct. 2015

they hastily retreat to the river bank. The hackers are different; they spend a lot of time in the water, and manage to learn a number of swimming techniques. However, they learn merely how to stay afloat, and never become accomplished swimmers (these hackers are not to be confused with computer hackers who typically attain high levels of expertise in their work).

Diving Deep into Success In order to become an expert at something, you can't get there through superficial, short-lived,

or half-baked approaches. You need to submerse yourself in that particular craft. And after you've dived deep and remained in the swim for a long time, you need to be prepared to be washed down the rapids, scraped along the rocks, alone, with no one to save you or tend to your wounds. And many, many years after your release from the edge, and after being subjected to this painstaking process repeatedly, maybe, just maybe, some glory, fame, and money will come. But by that point, you aren't doing it for the fame, glory, or money. Those thoughts were washed right out of your mind when you cleared the first waterfall. No, you're doing it now because diving deep in the water is a rush, an incomparable exhilaration that is its own reward–one that those standing on the edges of the river will never be able to comprehend.

So dive deep–and ye shall find!

rs. Sushma Aneja was no stranger to pain. When she approached Jiva in June 2013, she had already been suffering from ulcerative colitis for a decade. An otherwise healthy 55-year-old woman, she complained of symptoms like gas, acidity, and pain around the umbilicus (the area surrounding navel). She would experience headaches from time to time and there was a general feeling of weakness that she couldn't shake off. Finally, she also suffered from bouts of loose motions, as many as 7 to 9 times a day.

Mrs. Sushma Aneja's Consultation at Jiva Not satisfied with the treatment she'd received earlier, Mrs. Sushma decided that she had to look beyond traditional medicine, if she was to find long-lasting relief from ulcerative colitis. She contacted the Jiva TMC (Telemedicine center) where she spoke with Dr. Jasneet Arora.

Ulcerative Colitis A Jiva Case Study How does Ayurveda deal with Ulcerative Colitis – a condition typified by the chronic inflammation of the large intestine? Victoriously, we say! Read about our 3-month long journey in treating this condition.

After hearing her out, Dr. Arora explained to the patient that ulcerative colitis was caused by the aggravation of pitta, which caused the rakta dhatu and mamsa dhatu to function improperly. The good news was that with proper medication, diet control, and exercise, it was possible to bring the situation under control.

Line of Treatment In order to cure ulcerative colitis, Dr. Arora recommended a multi-pronged approach. She needed to calm the aggravated pitta dosha in the body and also heal the ulcers that were causing pain. Stool binders would reduce loose motions and other medicines would strengthen the digestive system. To this end, the following treatment was prescribed:

By the third and final month of her treatment, most of the symptoms she had described earlier had abated. There was no umbilical pain, acidity, or gas.

Since ulcerative colitis was caused by the aggravation of pitta, all sour, acidic, and salty food was off the table. The patient could no longer enjoy spicy, fried, or oily food, like chutneys, pickles, and sauces. All kinds of junk food and anything made from white flour (like cakes, pizza, bread, and pastries) were also a strict no-no, as were drinks like tea, coffee, and alcohol, along with milk and milk products. With so many restrictions, what was the patient allowed to eat? She was recommended a diet that was light and digestible, comprising of rice, steamed vegetables, and fresh pomegranates. She had to avoid citrus fruits, like oranges, lemons, and grapefruit. She could have fresh juices and sweet beverages, but definitely no fizzy drinks.

The Result In the first month of the treatment, the patient reported little to no change in her condition. However, by the second month, she was no longer suffering from loose motions and her gas problem was also under control. There was significant improvement in the consistency of stool, and their frequency was regulated to 2-3 times a day. By the third and final month of her treatment, most of the symptoms she had described earlier had abated. There was no umbilical pain, acidity, or gas. She had stopped taking allopathic drugs altogether and was comfortable eating all kinds of fruits, vegetables, and pulses.

Kama The Real Disease

– Dr. Satya Narayan Dasa

Duration of Treatment: 3 months. Proposed diet: Avoid sour, spicy, acidic, and salty food; fried and greasy food; citrus fruits like lemon, oranges, and grapefruit; food items made from white flour like cakes, pastries, and pizza; artificial food and fizzy drinks; tea, coffee, and alcohol. Recommended exercise: Anulom, vilom, bhramari and sheetali Results: Within just three months, Sushma reported a significant improvement in her condition. There was no acidity, gas, or pain around the umbilicus. Furthermore, she was able to eat different kinds of food – fruits, vegetables, and pulses – without any negative reaction. Testimonial: “After almost ten years, it's only now that I can say that the pain is no longer a bother for me. The results that I have seen in just 3 months are amazing. I wish I had come here sooner. Thank you so much Dr. Arora. And thank you Jiva. ” — Mrs. Sushma Aneja

Geeta's Message Lord Krishna says in Bhagvad Gita (3.37) that kama is insatiable and the biggest enemy of a human being. No matter how much you try to satisfy kama, it will never end. The act in itself is like pouring fuel over fire in the hopes of dousing the flames. As long as one cannot control kama, they will keep generating ama, and make themselves vulnerable to a host of diseases. So how does one cure kama? The answer lies in nama, or 'chanting the name of God'. Always remember, where there is Rama there can be no kama. Rama and kama can never co-exist with each other. That is the secret to good health! iagnosing the disease of a patient is the most important step in an Ayurvedic treatment. In contrast to modern medicine, the Ayurvedic approach is holistic and is designed to get to the root cause of a disease. An Ayurvedic practitioner will look at every patient as a separate entity and recommend a treatment according to their individual temperament and personality.

very woman goes through menopause (rajonivriti). It signals the end of the menstrual cycle and is typified by a dip in the production of the female hormone estrogen. This is when the body transitions from the pitta phase into the vata phase of life. Vata controls the level of estrogen in the body, which is helpful in maintaining youth. Any imbalance in vata impacts the working of the ovaries and stops the production of eggs. Women who've experienced pitta or vata imbalance in the years leading up to menopause are likely to have a difficult time in this phase of their life.

Sometimes patients who are not familiar with the Ayurvedic approach get uncomfortable by the personal nature of questions the doctor asks, such as those related to the digestive system and excretion of stool. These questions help an Ayurvedic doctor unravel digestive disorders, which are the root cause of most ailments.

Food & Its Relation to Diseases Associating good health with diet is one of the most common misconceptions people have. Ayurveda focuses on not just eating the right kind of food but also on building an effective digestive system. It is important to understand that the intake of good food can still lead to diseases, if the food is not digested properly. According to Ayurveda, ama (or toxins) created by undigested food is the biggest factor responsible for diseases. The very food that is meant to nourish our body can be a potential source of diseases and even lead to death. Organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) often neglect the issues

surrounding overeating and over-nutrition. This problem is not restricted to affluent societies alone; even the poor are impacted by it. While Ayurveda recognizes ama as a potent source of diseases, I would like to strike a cautionary note towards a bigger evil, which is kama. Kama is nothing but the desire to enjoy, which is innate in every individual. The fact that food is meant for survival is often overlooked in the wake of kama. Unlike real Yogis, everyone else is hooked on to the pleasures of eating. The variety of food available today ignites desire in an individual to eat more. When we do so, we end up committing “Prajna Aparadha”, or 'insulting our intelligence'. This fulfillment of pleasure from eating without restraint leads to diseases and suffering. Kama, therefore, gives rise to ama, and is indirectly responsible for our ill health as well.

The causes of premature menopause can be classified into two categories – medical and lifestyle related factors. The former includes conditions like primary ovarian insufficiency, hypothalamic and pituitary tumors, and chemotherapy or radiation therapy for cancer. Lifestyle factors causing premature menopause could vary from stress, tension and lack of exercise to poor nutrition, excessive smoking and drinking, and late pregnancy or induced abortion The symptoms of premature menopause are as follows:

Irregular / missed periods with heavier or lighter flow than usual

Hot flashes

Vaginal dryness

Weight gain

Bladder irritability

Sleeplessness

Dry skin, eyes, or mouth

Decreased sex drive

Any imbalance in vata impacts the working of the ovaries and stops the production of eggs. Women who've experienced pitta or vata imbalance in the years leading up to menopause are likely to have a difficult time in this phase of their life.

Deeper Ayurveda

Menopause is a natural process that is associated with ageing. In some cases, however, women experience its symptoms at a very early age, which can lead to complications in their life. Premature menopause also triggers an emotional response among women, which could include mild depression, irritability, mood swings, anxiety, insomnia, and listlessness. Since premature menopause cannot be reversed, our best attempt would be to take preventive measure. The following diet and lifestyle changes are recommended: 1. Follow a healthy and balanced diet and eat your meals on time. 2. Say no to junk food, fizzy drinks, refined sugar, and caffeine. 3. Avoid excessively salty, spicy, or sour foods, like pickles or chutney. 4. Eat warm food and drinks 5. Add spices like fennel and cumin seeds to your food. 6. Exercise at least 30 minutes every day. 7. Meditate to calm the mind. 8. Buy organic fruits and vegetables. 9. Do not smoke or drink excessively or indulge in substance abuse. With a little bit of foresight and some lifestyle modification, women can keep themselves protected from premature menopause and live a long and fruitful life, free from pain and complications.

Fast becomes a Farce There was a time when fasting was related to meditation, penance, and purification of the body. However, aspirations and the market-oriented society have made a farce of this concept.

W

hen grandma used to do her prayers and forbid others from eating rice, we knew that it was Ekadashi. It’s believed that fasting has been an integral part of Hinduism from time immemorial; but if you observe carefully, all religions have a provision for it. Very few know that fasting, too, has its types. Staying without food or eating only specific kinds of food for a limited period of time is one kind of fasting. Then, there are fasts where you aren’t even allowed to have even a drop of water.

Tradition of Fasting Is staying hungry and thirsty a whimsical tradition or is there some logic behind it? Truth is, there is a reason behind the concept of fasting. In diseases that affect the stomach or digestion, light foods like khichari are given. Ayurveda prescribes fasting for certain diseases. Experts have even said that fasting is the best remedy. This is proved on occasions like Ramadan, Navaratri, Ekadashi, and Sankranti. After all, who can forget that the fearsome dacoit Ratnakar transformed into Maharshi Valmiki and Rahul became Mahatama Buddha only after long periods of fasting?

Benefits of Fasting For some clinical investigations of illnesses, fasting is necessary. Ayurveda has considered it essential to the purification of the body. Researchers have noted the following changes in people during fasting: 

Body starts utilizing stored glycogens for energy

Detoxification occurs

White blood cell (WBC) count increases

Immunity increases

Internal oedema of the digestive system reduces

Skin diseases like pimples, eczema,

24 – Paramayu – Oct. 2015

Ayurveda experts have even said that fasting is the best remedy. psoriasis disappear 

It proves beneficial in joint diseases

It helps to make resolution and de-addiction

Skin starts glowing after fasting

Fast Becomes a Farce Whatever logic we’ve discussed so far lays emphasis on the need to control food. Unfortunately, commercializing everything to meet market demand has not spared even the practice of fasting. Vrat thali, special Navaratri package, and Karwa chauth offers attract many people to restaurants. This not only makes fun of tradition but also affects our digestion adversely. Fasting that should be done for the purpose of purification becomes the reason why toxins accumulate within the body. An attempt should be made to understand the meaning of fasting in the context of purification and meditation. We should all try to keep away from the attraction of offers and taste, and focus on the real goal of this practice.

Digestive Problems Common in Children

Deeper Ayurveda / Kid’s Special Food is essential to life, and good food is essential to good health. Are you inculcating the best dietary habits in your children? What are the repercussions of poor food choices? Read this article to find out.

C

perpetuates the creation of dhatu (or tissue) in the body.

hildren are the apples of our eyes; our most precious possession in the whole wide world. As parents, there's nothing we wouldn't do to ensure their continued wellbeing. We'd move mountains and turn the course of the sea if we sensed that something was troubling them. And yet, as appreciable as these sentiments might be, it's the things that we do for them everyday that have a greater impact in ensuring their health and fitness.

There are 7 types of dhatus, and they are all formed in a sequence. The first of them is the rasa dhatu (blood plasma), which leads to the formation of raktadhatu (hemoglobin), followed by mamsa (muscle), meda (fat & adipose tissue), asthi (bone), majja (bone marrow and nervous system), and finally the shukra (reproductive system) dhatu.

Developing Body, Delicate Constitution:

Ama & Ojas: The Eternal Opposites

Our children have extremely delicate constitutions. At the slightest provocation, you could be dealing with problems like tummy upset, diarrhea or vomiting. Also, don't forget that they are at a stage where they're building their immune system. The habits you inculcate in them today will determine how strong and disease free they remain throughout their life. According to Ayurveda and Charak Samhita, children are ruled by the kapha dosha until they are about 16 years of age. If kapha is healthy, their growth and development will be healthy. Any imbalance – whether it's deficiency or excess of kapha – can cause a lot of problems.

Agni: The Fire of Life Parents should also remember that strength, vitality, health, and longevity are all connected to agni, which has been defined in Ayurveda as the process of digestion and metabolism that takes place within the body. Chief among all agnis is jathragini - the enzymes that break down food and convert it into nutrient fluid, which then 26 – Paramayu – Oct. 2015

Since children are in their formative years, they need to build strong tissues, bones, muscles, and internal organs. The tiniest disturbance in the any one of the dhatus can throw the other ones off balance, weakening the body overall.

Since children are in their formative years, they need to build strong tissues, bones, muscles, and internal organs. The tiniest disturbance in any one of the dhatus can throw the other ones off balance, weakening the body overall. Weak digestion can also lead to the formation of ama - a toxic waste product that prevents food from being metabolized properly. If left unchecked, ama can even reverse the flow of vata – the life energy within the body. Here are some common problems that children can develop, if they do not have a strong digestion: Ages 3 to 6 years: Constipation, flatulence, anorexia, worm infestation, diarrhea, colic

Junk Food & Their Side Effects Like we mentioned earlier, parents only want what's best for their children. But very often, due to ignorance, lack of time, or misinformation, we end up making the wrong food choices for them. The sight of small kids binging on burgers, chips, pizzas, coke, and pastries is becoming uncomfortably common these days. Parents give in to their children's nagging and end up buying these 'happy meals', not knowing that they're perpetuating a life of poor immunity and health problems for them.

Ages 7 to 14 years: All of the above, plus hyperacidity, mouth sores, and obesity As you can see, weak digestion can be a root cause of a wide range of problems. On the other hand, proper diet can make the body healthy, helping it produce ojas in large quantities. Ojas is the exact opposite of ama. Where one is toxic, the other is life-giving. Always present in the body, ojas prevents diseases, balances the dhatus and doshas and lends vitality, clear thinking, energy, and bliss to the child.

We all know that obesity is one of the most common side effects of having one too many burgers. But the problems don't end here. According to experts, excessive junk food can affect a child's brain function and intelligence, impacting his energy levels and ability to focus. Obese children often become victims of chronic depression and low self esteem; and they are at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The greatest gift you can give your child is a healthy body and a healthy mind. A life free from weakness and illnesses is more valuable than all the riches in the world. And, if a child has the strength and vitality to achieve his dreams, then you, as parents, would have done your duty in the best possible way.

Ampachak Churna

All diseases, especially those related to the stomach, arise due to weak fire, or agni, that produces ama (toxins) in the body

28 – Paramayu – Oct. 2015

A

yurveda insists that production of ama in the body is harmful and should be discouraged. And if it is produced, immediate attempts should be made to digest it. Jiva Aampachak Churna is effective in doing this. Made from five ingredients found commonly in any kitchen - dry ginger, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, mint, and fennel - this churna not only strengthens gastric fire but also protects the body from many big diseases.

What is Aampachak Churna? Take one part each of dry ginger, cumin seeds, and coriander seeds and 2 parts each of mint and fennel and mix them together to make this churna. All five ingredients ignite gastric fire, improve digestion, and counter the production of ama.

How does digestion occur? All three doshas contribute in digesting food. Transporting food from the mouth to the stomach and absorbing digested food is a function of vata dosha. Sensing the taste of food and making it soft for digestion is done by kapha dosha. Digesting this softened food is the function of pitta dosha.

Since all five ingredients of Aampachak Churna are hot and pungent, they increase pitta, stimulate gastric fire, and reduce vata and kapha. So problems like bloating, flatulence, abdominal heaviness, constipation, and tastelessness in mouth get cured. Fennel is sweet in taste and dry ginger also turns sweet after digestion. The cooling and sweet properties of these two ingredients keep pitta under control and prevent problems, like burning sensation in the stomach.

Diseases in which Aampachak churna is effective  · Hyperacidity (burning in abdomen,

sour secretions in the mouth)  · Weak digestive fire (loss of hunger)  · Tastelessness in the mouth  · Sticky stools  · Constipation  · Abdominal heaviness after meals

Dose 1-2 spoons after meals with lukewarm water .

In the last issue, we saw that every person's constitution has vata, pitta, and kapha in different proportions. This mixture of all three doshas makes an individual's constitution unique.

K

nowing an individual's constitution is necessary to decide the line of treatment and select the right medicinal herbs, diet, and lifestyle. In Ayurveda, this is done by examining the pulse and case history of the patient. Astrology, too, can play a role in determining someone’s constitution. You probably know that astrology is based on a horoscope, which is a map of the sky

describing the position of planets in various zodiacs at the time of the person's birth. The first house is called ascendant and the lord of this house is called Lagnesh. To know someone’s constitution, one needs to see which zodiac is located in the ascendant, where the Lagnesh is placed, their positions with respect to each other, and which planets are looking at them. Remember, in astrology, the Sun and planet Mars

In astrology, the Sun and planet Mars are believed to have the fire element and, for this reason, are related to the pitta dosha. The Moon and planet Venus are dominated by the water element and kapha dosha. Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu are vata dominant planets. Jupiter is kapha dominant while Mercury influences all three doshas.

are believed to have the fire element and, for this reason, are related to the pitta dosha. The Moon and planet Venus are dominated by the water element and kapha dosha. Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu are vata dominant planets. Jupiter is kapha dominant while Mercury influences all three doshas. Similarly, zodiacs have also been classified. Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius are pitta dominating. Lord of Scorpion is Mars, which is pitta dominant. Taurus, Cancer and Pisces are kapha dominating. Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius are related to vata dosha. Since lord of Virgo is Mercury and that of Capricorn is Saturn, they too are related to vata dosha. Position of a planet in the ascendant is also important, especially when the planet is close to the degree of the ascendant. Let’s assume Saturn is in the ascendant. It indicates to a vata constitution. If Jupiter is located in the ascendant, the person is of kapha constitution and has tendency to put on weight. If a planet is located in its best zodiac or own zodiac and in the central house or triangular house, its role is also significant in determining a person’s constitution.

Let’s understand this with the help of an example. The horoscope given here is that of a woman. Leo is present in her ascendant, which is a pitta zodiac. Lord of the ascendant Sun is located in Taurus (kapha dominating zodiac of Earth element) with Mercury, which is dominated by all three doshas. Moon (a kapha dominating planet) is looking at the ascendant. Thus, we can see that the ascendant and its lord have influence of Earth and water, which indicates kapha constitution. Pitta principle is influencing the second place. So her constitution is kapha-pitta.

Let’s take another example to make things clear. This horoscope is of a young girl. Virgo is in the ascendant, which is a zodiac of Earth element. Therefore, it has a kapha constitution. Lord of the ascendant Mercury is located in the same zodiac. Pitta dominating planets Sun and Mars are located in the first house. Kapha constitution Moon is also with them. Vata constitution's Saturn is looking at the ascendant. Thus, we can see that pitta is dominating the girl's physical constitution while kapha is in the second place. Vata is also involved to some extent.

Diet

We eat to stay alive and nourish our body. But won’t it be nice if our food started eliminating harmful toxins from our body as well? Thankfully, Indian food contains many such ingredients that can do this for us.

What is the purpose of food?

T

he purpose of food is to nourish the body and mind, but this is only possible when jatharagni and dhatwagni digest the food well. For some reason, if agni fails to digest the food properly, ama, instead of ahararas, is produced. Ama is a sticky, heavy substance that blocks the channels inside our cells and tissues. As a result, nutrition doesn't get distributed properly, causing the cells and tissues to become weak and vulnerable to diseases. To protect ourselves from such problems, we should avoid food items that generate ama and adopt a diet that eliminates it instead.

What causes ama Sweets, curds, paneer, meat, fish, eggs, pizza, burger, and bread are heavy to digest and can produce toxins. Eating overcooked food and / or stale food can have the same results. Packed, canned, and processed items are also considered harmful for this reason. If you want to eliminate ama generated by these food items, you will have to include easily digestible food in your diet.

What can purify the body? To eliminate ama and other toxic substances, it’s important to consider a vegetarian diet. Always eat food that’s fresh or freshly prepared. Avoid items that have just been taken out of the refrigerator and stay away from fast food. Have plenty of vegetable soups. For instance, soups made from green gram, masoor, spinach, cabbage, carrot, and pumpkin are light to digest and do not produce ama. Vegetables like pumpkin, white goosefoot, carrot, apple gourd, torai, cabbage, pointed gourd, turnip, ladies finger, and bottle gourd supply a lot of nutrition and are rich in fiber and minerals. They help in the purification of the body. Fresh fruits also do the same thing. Apples, pomegranate, figs, pears, grapes, sapodilla, papaya, lychee and their juices are good for the body. But the best are our Indian spices. Turmeric, coriander, mint, clove, dry ginger, cumin seeds, cardamom, cinnamon, bay leaf, and fennel play a major role in digesting ama and eliminating toxins from the body. Add them to soups, vegetables, salads, and rice so that they

eliminate ama from the body. Water is just as important as food. Cold water from the refrigerator generates ama, while lukewarm water eliminates it. Juices of fruits and vegetables, coconut water, and lemon water also do the same. On the other hand, alcohol and carbonated drinks produce ama. To keep the body clean and disease free, we should avoid ama-generating substances and choose food that digests it. Oct. 2015 – Paramayu – 35

IBS

These days, people of all ages, from children to adults, are suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). This article will tell you how to recognize it and how you can cure it. Symptoms% Irritable Bowel Syndrome affects our intestines, primarily the large intestine. A person suffering from this condition exhibits symptoms like gases and pains in the intestines. Sometimes patients complain of constipation and at other times diarrhea. The disease is common up to the age of 48 years. IBS is controlled by the brain; that’s why it’s also called the Brain Gut disorder.

Causes% Now let’s try and understand this disease from an Ayurvedic perspective.  IBS occurs due to imbalance of doshas.  Weak digestive fire (agni) is responsible for this condition.  Having heavy meals when the digestive fire is weak affects the intestines and leads to imbalance of all three doshas.

 Pradnyaparadh has also been

considered the cause of IBS in Ayurveda. It means ‘the misuse of intelligence’. Vishamashan is yet another big cause. Our acharyas have said that untimely meals affect our digestive system and lead to IBS-like diseases.

Easily Digestible Food%  High protein diet and fattening food should be avoided.  White flour and items made from it should also be avoided.  Light and easily digestible items like khichari, buttermilk, etc. and fresh fruits, like pomegranate, should be included in your

meals. Having alcohol, chocolates, coffee, and soda worsen the disease. It’s better to avoid them. Have your meals on time and avoid staying hungry for too long. If milk products are worsening the condition, switch to yogurt. It’s a better alternative. Drink more water to control pitta.

Home Remedies%  Ginger is good for the intestines. Add half a spoon of ginger in a cup of water and boil for 10 minutes. Then remove the ginger and drink hot water.  Have mint in some form or the other during meals.  This disease worsens with worries and excessive thinking, so try and remain free from stress.  Put 2-3 drops of almond oil in your nose every day. Massage the soles of your feet with coconut oil and camphor. We can keep this disease away if we emphasize on changing our lifestyle. Note: Vishamashan is yet another big cause of IBS. Our acharyas have said that untimely meals affect our digestive system and cause IBS-like diseases. Oct. 2015 – Paramayu – 41

54 – Paramayu – Oct. 2015

Oct. 2015 – Paramayu – 61
