Nowadays, joint pain is becoming more and more prevalent in the young and old alike with increasing incidences of disease such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout and others. Joint pain greatly lowers the quality of life, hampers productivity and increases medical expenses. Hence, we have focused this article on joint pain. In the Cover Story, I touch upon the efficacy of Ayurvedic treatment in joint problems, while the opening article guides you on what to do before going for treatment and dispels some myths. Don't miss the exclusive interview with Srishti Rana, winner of the Miss Asia Pacific World crown 2013. She talks about her success and her experience with Ayurveda. In the international article section we have Jessica Richmond from Florida, U.S.A, who is driven by a goal to integrate Ayurveda and psychotherapy. Together, we are teaching Western psychotherapists how to apply simple Ayurvedic principles to help their clients with mental disorders. President’s message H uman life is not a bed of roses. We have to live through phases of pain and agony in our lives. We may suffer from pain in the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level. Though it may sound radical, in my opinion, food plays an important role in creating pain and conflict.
According to Ayurveda, food is not just those that goes into our mouth, but everything that goes in through our senses. Therefore, we need to take into consideration what we see, hear, feel and smell as food. While sattvic food ensures peace, harmony, balance and success in life, the food that we consume through all our senses in our day-to-day life is becoming increasingly tamasic. We prefer food that tastes good to eat (even though when they are unhealthy); prefer looking at things that are good in outward appearance or tamasic in nature; and love listening to people or things that inflate our ego. All these regular supply of tamasic fodder give births to gunas (nature) such as greed, selfish, envy and hatred leading to imbalance and negativity in the society. It is greed that we are now completely focused on numerical growth. Increasing the numbers of customers, increasing sales and increasing profits—all denoted by numbers is what we strive for at all times. In the meantime, we have shelved traditions values and ethics to the attic, and we see that in all aspects of our life. All this value erosion is causing pain in our lives. It is denoted by pain in the body, in our hearts and minds, and in our souls. The remedy is of course is adopting sattvic diet, thoughts and actions in our lives. But for that we need a commitment—a passion to bring positive change in our lives and the lives of others. oint pain is a serious problem, because it can affect every aspect of your life. It is not only all about physical pain but how it affects you—your professional, family and social life. The vast majority of people suffering from joint pain rely on painkillers which can be detrimental to health in the long-term. Joint pain is one of the leading causes of debility in the world today. In modern times, it not only affects the elderly but the young as well—two thirds of affected people are under the age of 65. Apart from other musculoskeletal problems, there are over 100 different types of arthritis that cause joint pain in individuals. Types of joint problems Joint pain also comes with other associated symptoms such as stiffness, numbness, swelling, and tingling in the hands and feet. Osteoarthritis, known as sandhivata in Ayurveda, is the most common form of arthritis which occurs due to the damage of the cartilage in the joints, causing bones to rub together and joints to swell. Soreness of the joint, stiffness (especially in the morning) and lack of mobility are all symptoms of osteoarthritis.
Joint pain is a serious problem, because it can affect every aspect of your life. In autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis (amavata), the body's immune system begins attacking healthy joint tissue causing pain, swelling and inflammation. Acute rheumatoid arthritis causes pain and stiffness in the joints of the hands, feet, wrist, ankles and knees. In severe cases it can result in deformities. Apart from osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, gout is the leading cause of joint pain. This problem is due to impaired uric acid secretion in the body. In Ayurveda, gout is known as vatrakt, as the main dosha involved is vata and it affects rakt dhatu (blood tissues).
When to contact an Ayurvedic physician Having a general understanding of the types of diseases that causes joint pain and its symptoms are important, however, it is also important to know when you should contact your Ayurvedic physician. Rather than consulting an Ayurvedic physician after exhausting all avenues of treatment, you are advised to go for consultation right away if you display the below symptoms. –
You have fever not associated with flu symptoms.

Joint Pain - Facts and Myths Below we will dispel three common myths associated with Ayurvedic treatment of joint pain. Myth: Ayurvedic medicine is slow in providing relief Fact: Generally, patients coming for Ayurvedic treatment have a long history of some joint problem. They opt for Ayurvedic consultation after exhausting all other avenues, taking pain killers for years, and their problem is in an advanced position. Ayurvedic treatment targets the root of the disease and first aims at balancing the aggravated doshas, restoring digestion and digesting toxins, therefore it takes time to work.
Does resting the joint reduce the pain or make it worse? Does moving the joint reduce the pain or make it worse?
Myth: It doesn't matter what I eat during treatment.
Do medications, massage, or applying heat reduce the pain?
Fact: Nothing could be farther from the truth. A proper diet regimen is intrinsic to the effectiveness of Ayurvedic treatment. If you don't follow the diet plan recommended by the doctor, you cannot expect the medications to work effectively on your problem.

Myth: Pain recurs when I stop taking medicines Fact: Some patients lose the benefit of an effective treatment because they are too lazy or uncommitted to complete the entire course of medications. When they stop medications, pain reoccurs because they haven't allowed it enough time to work on the problem. It is not due to the inefficacy of the medicines but to their inability to stick to a proper regimen.

ince time immemorial, Ayurveda has enjoyed unparalleled supremacy in treating joint pains. Probably no other system of medicine has such a fine understanding of joint diseases and joint pains than Ayurveda. Many generations of Indian people, especially the elderly have taken advantage of Ayurveda to get rid of joint pains and live a healthy life till the twilights of their life. Even today joint pain happens to be the most frequently reported complaints by people in their old age. Knee pain is the most common among senior citizens, through problems in other joints is also found among them. Ayurveda is like an answer to the prayers of people suffering from joint pain, in both the young and the old. Joint pain aggravates during the rainy season lasting from July to late August in India — perhaps this is the best time to understand Ayurveda’s role in helping you deal with this problem. Unfortunately common people don't understand much about joint diseases and their causes. So when they start suffering from joint pains, they keep taking analgesic and antiinflammatory drugs for years in a hope that they would cure their problem. When they realize that those medicines are not really helping them, they come to Ayurvedic treatment. But by that time it is bit too late. If they start Ayurvedic treatments at earlier stage of the disease, they can get much better results and in fact even get rid of the problem permanently.

Causes of Joint Pain Pain and inflammation in the joint occurs when there is some kind of defect in the normal functioning or design of the joint anatomy. Known as 'arthralgia' in medical language, joint pains are seen in variety of conditions and due to variety of reasons. The main reasons are inflammation, infection, injury, allergic reaction, and normal wear and tear of joints. Some of the medical conditions that are marked by considerable joint pain include rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, viral arthritis, rheumatic fever, Lyme disease, drug-induced arthritis, bursitis and obesity.
Ayurvedic view of joint pain Ayurveda has its own concepts of anatomy and pathology that come into play when we address joint problems. Joints are called sandhi in Ayurveda. Joints in the extremities consist of asthi and majja dhatus. Ligaments which hold
Ayurveda's efficacy validated by WHO Ayurveda has proven time and again that it is the most effective in the treatment of joint problems. It is not widely known but the first-ever study of a traditional medical system sponsored by the WHO was of complete, classical Ayurvedic treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. The study entitled “The WHO/ICMR Study of the Efficacy of Ayurvedic Treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis” enrolled 290 patients with RA over a 7-year period from 1977 to 1984. For the first time ever, the study was opened up to the scrutiny of allopathic physicians and was evaluated according to rigorous allopathic criteria. Even the allopathic experts were unanimous in their assessment that Ayurvedic treatment for rheumatoid arthritis was safe and effective, and provided relief without harmful side effects. With the proper use of Ayurvedic principles, the right foods and proper lifestyle, it is possible to say goodbye to joint pains. Ayurveda is one of the best systems of medicine for the effective prevention, management and treatment of joint pain. the joint structures together are formed out of rakta dhatu, which is dominated by pitta dosha. The lubrication in the joints is provided by shleshak kapha, while the movements are driven by vata. The properties of these doshas are mostly antagonistic to each other. While kapha is oily, sticky, thick and lethargic, vata is dry, rough, hollow and mobile. Pitta on the other hand is hot, sharp and corrosive. There is a delicate balance of these doshas in the joints and even a slight imbalance can disturb the structure and function of the joints resulting in joint pain. For efficient joint movements, vata requires free flow. If its pathway is blocked by kapha or pitta, joint movement can get affected and become painful. As per Ayurveda, jatharagni or digestive fire is responsible for digesting the food. When this fire gets weak, digestion gets disturbed. Impaired digestion leads to accumulation of ama or toxins in the body and when these toxins accumulate in joints and block the pathway of vata, it may cause joint pains.

inally after a three-month journey backpacking from Barcelona, Spain to a little Polish costal town called Bobolin, I reached my destination. An impulse told me that my trip was now completed—but then I got another one, and I knew that my journey had just begun. Arriving in Bobolin in a rancho-style hotel,
I began a workshop on the fundamentals of spirituality in daily life. I was interested in the topic, because I had also attended the previous workshop of Dr. Chauhan in Warsaw, Poland. This time, his brother Satyanarayana Dasa was also expected to participate. While traveling to my current

Some of them are: Deepan: Kindling the digestive fire through medicines and fasting. When a patient has low hunger due to accumulation of toxins, this principle is used to stimulate his gastric fire. Pachan: Digesting of toxins through medicines, herbs, dietary regimen and exercise. Accumulation of toxins in joints and body is often the cause of joint diseases, so pachan helps the body to digest and excrete these toxins. Medicines like amruta, nirgundi and shunthi help in digesting ama (toxins) from body.

destination, I felt that had a link with Ayurveda. That being said, it was on this weeklong stay in Bobolin where I realized that I wanted to go to India so that I could learn more about its ancient medicine, philosophy, and to also regain my health.
Living Wildly Wild traveling, as beautiful as it may seem is also tiring. Mixing my fatigue with my previous rock’n’roll experience in such a passionate city like Barcelona – a city full of nightlife, drugs, alcohol, random acquaintances and the high-velocity work of a software developer – resulted in the draining out of vitality from my body. I was absolutely convinced that during my time in Barcelona, I enjoyed the extremes of my freedom, regardless of how fatigued and debilitated I felt. Finally, my mind became weak and anxious. I found myself feeling paranoid and started experiencing panic attacks. There was a constant lack of security. I repeatedly tried to alleviate these ailments with psychotherapy, hard work and frequent parties—but that only made things worse. There was no peace inside me and even though I had started to practice Yoga, I couldn’t get rid of my morbid habits.
The Panchakarma experience At one point, I decided to sell everything and make my selfdiscovery journey. Half a year later, I became inspired by both of my Indian mentors and made my pilgrimage to India to Jiva Ayurveda, Faridabad for a complete Panchakarma treatment within a spiritual retreat. In India, I learned the most in Faridabad, but the lessons I had

learned in Vrindavan, at the Jiva Institute were equally valuable. My primary complaints were a weak nervous system, depression, weak digestion and lots of toxic accumulation. The Panchakarma treatment at Jiva was aimed at helping me get rid of these problems. But what I got here was more than I had expected. The Panchakarma treatment was intense, sometimes harsh, mainly gentle but most importantly, it was effective. My mental issues and my problems with cold hands and cold feet circulation subsided. The healing process started with a flush, by drinking an unpalatable herbal concoction
after which I visited the toilet more frequently. A couple few days later, the oil and steam massages started, then, a series of oil-pouring on the forehead, herbal potli, and nose, eyes and ears treatment went on. It was followed with potli massage to rejuvenate my muscles and head massage to relax mind. All these and the sumptuous oil baths did a lot of good.

The Panchakarma treatment lasted for one and a half month and includes therapies such as abhyanga, oil baths, shirodhara, various types of potli massages, nasya, netra vasti, karna purana, regular head massages and others. It was followed by a twoweek spiritual retreat at the Jiva Institute in Vrindavan. The experience at Jiva in Faridabad and Vrindavan rejuvenated my body, mind and soul completely.
The promise and the discipline Establishing a daily routine was a big part of the healing process. I was to go for morning walks and exercises in the park next to the clinic, have nourishing food on regular hours, and do some easy work and take proper rest. I followed the regimen religiously. I was given daily Yoga classes with a helpful and dedicated teacher, who made me walk straight and helped to regain some weight as well. I'm 185 cm tall and at one point I was just 69 kilos. I left India a healthier 75 kilos. After the treatment, I was more open to the others, more spontaneous, and less absorbed in myself. My family is very happy to see me so strong. People say I look smart. Well, what can I say? Coming to Jiva restored back the health, happiness and laughter back to my life.

Expert Speak / How did you feel winning the Miss Asia Pacific World 2013 Title? Was this your dream come true? Well winning the Miss Asia Pacific World crown is definitely the best thing that has ever happened to me. The feeling was out of this world. It is definitely a dream come true for me because this was something I always wanted to achieve. I was very excited and there were no words to describe my happiness. What are your long-term career aspirations? You have won the Miss Asia Pacific World crown, what next?
My mother is a big fan of Ayurveda and herbal ways of maintaining diet. She has been telling me the benefits of Ayurveda and a good diet since I was very young.
Right now I am working for the Miss India organization as the Miss Asia Pacific World. I have been going to places for auditions and events. I am just going with the flow right now taking up opportunities that are coming my way. How do you keep fit? What is the secret of your good looks? Do you follow any herbal or Ayurvedic regimen for beauty? My mother is a big fan of Ayurveda and herbal ways of maintaining diet. She has been telling me the benefits of Ayurveda and a good diet since I was very young. So I give this credit of my interest in herbal regimen to my mother. She also tells me to do Yoga at least for half an hour every day. Of course, I forget but the best part is that she keeps reminding me. I feel these natural ways of keeping fit also help your skin a lot. They give glow to your skin. Also, I prefer using homemade remedies to apply on my skin rather than using beauty products. Do you integrate the principles of Ayurveda in your diet and lifestyle? Honestly, I am not able to integrate many principles of Ayurveda in my life because of hectic schedules and lots of travelling. But I try my best to at least eat right and go to bed and wake up on time. I also remind myself to drink

enough water. However, now I'm making small conscious attempts to integrate the principles of Ayurveda in my life. Would you like to share some health advice to aspiring models? My only advice to young aspiring people would be to eat right. Please do not starve yourself—it does more harm to your body than good. You can try eating less but eat at every two hours intervals. You will feel energetic and not bloated. I would also want to advise them to adopt a natural way of living, especially waking up, sleeping and eating on time. Also, they should integrate Ayurvedic herbs, diet and lifestyle to enjoy good immunity and maintain their good looks in the longterm. Do you think Indian beauties such as you can promote the virtues of Ayurveda, our indigenous healing science, to the world? I think we must be actively promoting Ayurveda globally. It's a natural and safe way of healing and keeping fit. I would want myself and others to adopt such methods that can do wonders to their mind, body and soul. In fact, lately, Yoga and Ayurveda have been promoted and adopted by a lot of people in India and worldwide. Dr. Partap Chauhan seems to be doing a wonderful work with Jiva Ayurveda.

You can do so by coming home earlier from work, eating meals, surfing the net or playing games together. By increasing the time spent together, you not only strengthen your relationship and rapport with your child, you also increase the opportunities to talk about the topics you wish to address.

nce upon a time there was a poor young man who always complained about his poverty. One day he met a sadhu in the outskirts of the village, and as usual began cursing his fate. There was no end to his lamentations. The sadhu listened very patiently. After some time the sadhu broke his silence and told the young man that actually he was a millionaire. He has a lot of wealth and he should not grieve unreasonably. The young man was surprised to hear it. He thought that the sadhu must be joking, but he was not – he looked very serious. The young man was puzzled to hear that, he asked the sadhu, “If I am a millionaire then why am I unaware of it. How could that be possible?” The sadhu replied, “It's because you don't pay attention to your wealth. You are too busy lamenting.” Now the man became eager and filled with great hope thinking that the sadhu was about to uncover a great secret which would make him a millionaire. The man requested the sadhu to reveal the secret so that he would no longer have to suffer in poverty. The sadhu finally said, “Come follow me.” The young man began following him to a nearby city. They reached a store of a very wealthy businessman in the city. The businessman welcomed the sadhu with great honor and seated him in a comfortable place. He enquired about the welfare of the sadhu and asked him the purpose of his visit. The sadhu replied that he has come with a very special deal. The young man with him wants to sell his right eye. “Would you pay him five lakhs for that?” said the sadhu. The businessman was a devotee of the sadhu and immediately understood the significance of this offer. He replied, “Swamiji, that sounds like a very good deal. Usually I pay twenty lakhs for an eye.” The sadhu turned to the young man and said, “Go inside the room to the left and your right eye will be removed in exchange of five lakhs.” The young man became terrified and was ready to run but the sadhu caught hold of his hand firmly, looked into his eyes and said, “Why do you want to run? I will get rid of your poverty.” The

Moral of the Story The moral of the story is that the most precious thing we have been gifted is the human body. It is with this body that one can earn millions or billions. There is no limit to how much one can earn with it. Therefore, the human body is priceless. We, however, do not realize its importance and neglect to take care of it. Our body is the basis for fulfilling all our desires. It is with the help of the body that we can achieve our goals. Thus we need to take care of it. However, the purpose of good health is not just earning material wealth. The importance of the human body is that by this we can achieve permanent happiness. Though the human body is temporary, it can bring us closer to God. Happiness and suffering is experienced by both the rich and poor, but if one takes to devotion to God then one can go beyond both suffering and happiness and become established in supreme bliss, forever. This is the greatness of the human body. Attaining good health and using our body to follow the true calling of our life, doing good deeds, and striving for closeness with God is the true purpose of our life. We can only do that if we believe that health is our true wealth.

While we relate pimples to adolescence, joint pain is always associated with old age. But that is not always the case, even children suffer from joint pains, the disease is known as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.
There are mainly two factors that are responsible for the development of this disease. The first being accumulation of excess ama (toxins) and the other being the vitiation of doshas, mainly vata dosha.
I
f your child wakes up in the morning with stiffness in the body and complains of pain in the joints and frequent fever, there might be a possibility that he might be suffering from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). Use of pain killers and steroids for relief in this disease can be harmful for children while Ayurveda provides a safer and more effective alternative. Though only one child out of a thousand suffers from this disease, its capacity to cause long-term damage to joints makes it a serious threat among children. This disease is mainly prevalent in children below the age of 12.
What is JRA? Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease affecting the joints. The exact cause of this disease, as other autoimmune diseases, still remains unknown to modern science. What exactly stimulates the autoimmune

reaction in these children still remains a mystery, though many factors, such as family history of rheumatoid arthritis seem to contribute in the disease process. Mental stress seems to worsen the symptoms in some cases.
How to know your child has JRA In some cases, JRA may begin with influenza like fever that might show one or two fluctuations every day. In other cases, your child might display the following symptoms: Loss of appetite and
lethargy Morning stiffness Pain and swelling in the
joints of the entire body While fever subsides in few days, other symptoms persist. If not treated well, JRA may lead to complications such as joint damage, muscle weakness or muscle loss, osteoporosis, and eye disorders.
If your child has a weakened jatharagni (digestive fire) but keeps on eating things that are heavy to digest, such as chocolates, cakes, bread, eggs, sweets and non-veg items, than your child may be at risk. Since his weak digestive fire is unable to digest them, it results in the formation of undigested toxins known as ama. These toxins start blocking various channels in the body. The first dhatu (tissue) that is created after digestion is known as rasa dhatu, but in a person with a weak digestive system this dhatu is full of undigested toxins. If your child shows loss of appetite, it might be due to a weakened digestive fire, while symptoms such as morning stiffness and lethargy indicate presence of toxins (ama) in rasa dhatu. Improper food, faulty lifestyle, cold foods and environment, heavy rain, and suppression of natural urges can aggravate vata in the body. In juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, aggravated vata carries the ama to various joints in the body resulting in stiffness, inflammation and pain. When the body tries to digest the ama and reopen the blocked channels, the body sends the fire element to all the channels leading to a rise in body temperature causing fever. Since Ayurveda has a very detailed understanding of the development, diagnosis and management of JRA, it is a safe, healthy and effective alternative. Your child will benefit from a natural, holistic and customized treatment suited to his prakriti.
What you can do as a parent? Parents need to pay particular attention to the food and lifestyle habits of their children if they wish to protect them from disease like JRA. Here are a few pointers: Discourage your child from having foods that weaken the gastric fire and produce toxins in the body, such as chocolates, bread, eggs, sweets, pizzas, burger, ice creams, non-veg items and junk foods. Inculcate the habit of eating all types of vegetables, fruits and salads in children. Use Indian spices such as turmeric (haldi), asafoetida (hing), garlic, ginger, mustard seeds, carom seeds (ajwain), cumin (jeera) and coriander (dhaniya) when you cook vegetables, pulses, snacks and breakfast.
Give your child chapattis or rotis made from wheat flour because it is easy to digest. Apply some ghee on the rotis before your serve. Dry fruits such as soaked almond and walnuts are good for nourishing bones and marrow.
Use lukewarm sesame oil to massage stiff and painful joints in the morning followed by fomentation with hot water for instant relief. Avoid pain killers.
Use herbs such as guduchi, rasna, sunthi and guggul, as well as mixtures such as dashmool, triphala and trikatu, which are very effective in this disease. Grind a mixture of dried ginger (saunth), carom seeds (ajwain) and horse gram (kulthi) and let your child have it regularly for relief in JRA Encourage your child to participate in regular physical activities. Teach your child to practice light yogic exercises such as Surya Namaskar.
Let him avoid overindulging in computer games, TV, mobile phones, oversleeping and junk foods.
With Ayurvedic care, food and lifestyle it is quite possible to combat and even prevent ailments such as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Your child don't have to suffer from joint pain in a young age, what is perhaps required is vigilance and the right approach. Of course, the original science of healing, Ayurveda is there to help you in securing a healthy life for your child.

Ghee is one of the purest and healthiest of foods found in the planet. It has been falsely blamed for heart disease and obesity, when in fact it is beneficial for the heart and the entire health if taken in moderation.

he goal of any journey is always perhaps to reach a culminating stage. Not all organisms, substances or individuals are lucky enough to reach that stage in the lifecycle. In fact very few attain a state of completion and that's why they are supposed to be very special. Ghee, the divine food, is a perfect example of this phenomenon. From milk one gets cream, from cream we get butter, and from the butter come that golden liquid known as ghee. After that there is no further stage left. The
ultimate level is reached, which is very unique, nutritious and energetic. Ayurveda experts knew this and therefore made maximum use of ghee in their formulations.
What is Ghee? Ghee is prepared by heating butter just over 100°C to remove water content by evaporation, then filtering out the precipitated fat. Though ghee can be prepared from any butter, in Ayurveda ghee prepared from cow's butter (i.e. Butter obtained from cow's milk) is regarded to be the best in quality.
Scientific Research Modern researches have shed a lot more light on various aspects of ghee. Few of them are given below: Ghee does not form dangerous free radicals unlike
vegetable oils because it has a high smoke point and doesn’t burn easily when cooking. While other fats, such as butter and oils, slow
down the digestive process and can sit heavy in the stomach, ghee is most notably said to stimulate the secretion of stomach acids to help with digestion. Lab studies have shown ghee to reduce cholesterol
both in the serum and intestine. It does it by triggering an increased secretion of biliary lipids. Ghee is rich with antioxidants and acts as an aid
in the absorption of vitamins and minerals from other foods, serving to strengthen the immune system.
Ayurvedic Ghee Preparations Ghee itself is cool, unctuous, light, smooth and soft in properties and considered sweet in taste. But it can adapt even with the herbs with opposite properties than its own and carry its medicinal effects all over the body. That means, if cooked with herbs that are hot, dry, heavy, thick, rough, hard, bitter and pungent, ghee adopts their properties and carries them throughout the body. It is because of this special character that ghee has been used heavily by Ayurveda experts as an anupana, a substance that enhances the power of the drug. What causes premature wrinkles? Perhaps wrinkles would bother us less if they appear at the 'right time'. But in many individuals they appear earlier than expected, adversely affecting how they look. Many causes are blamed for premature wrinkles. Some of the reasons are sun exposure, toxins, malnutrition and hereditary factors.
What Ayurveda says? As Ayurveda is based upon principles of doshas and dhatus, their roles in both, in protecting the skin and also in causing wrinkles are important.
Role of doshas%& The smooth, silky texture of skin is mainly attributed to the unctuous property of kapha and to some extent pitta. Individuals having sufficient pure kapha and pitta in body usually display less wrinkles. Vata being dry, rough and hollow has the capacity to absorb unctuousness and spread dryness in the skin. An excess amount of vata in the body provides an ideal environment for development of wrinkles. Individuals with a dominant vata constitution are more prone to have wrinkles than individuals with a kapha constitution.
Role of dhatus%& However, the state of dhatus (tissues) plays the most important role in the formation of wrinkles. Different dhatus render different characteristics to the skin. While rasa and rakta dhatus nourish the skin, mansa dhatu offers firmness to the skin. The oiliness of skin is the contribution of meda dhatu while the exceptional lustre and glow are the gifts of shukra dhatu and ojas. The deterioration in the quality of all these dhatus affects the skin and leads to formation of wrinkles. Increasing age, poor nutrition, exposure to extreme climatic conditions can affect the quality and quantity of rasa dhatu and cause wrinkles. Also, mental stress can play a factor in inducing wrinkles. The aggravation of vata dosha in the body is high in such cases. Therefore pacifying vata is important.

oints are known as sandhi in Ayurveda and there are numerous joints in our body that aids movement, mobility and locomotion. Without joints human movement is not possible. Joints help to connect the bones together and provide structure and flexibility to the body. Any damage due to the affliction or injury to the joints can adversely affect the functioning of the joints leading to joint pain and swelling. Joint pain can be a symptom of underlying diseases such as osteoarthritis (sandhivata), rheumatoid arthritis (amavata), gout (vatarakta), muscular tension, sprains and injuries. In old age, joint pain normally occurs due to the wear and tear of the bones and cartilages but this can be managed as well with Ayurveda. As per Ayurveda, a vitiated or impaired vata dosha causes pathological imbalances in the joints symptomised by joint pain. When the joints began to swell, it is due to the accumulation of ama (a sticky toxin) in the joints.

It also helps in strengthening the nerves. Ginger: Ginger helps in digesting accumulated toxins (ama) in the body. Cut ginger into small pieces and add some lemon juice and rock salt. Leave it to dry. After it is dried, you can enjoy it like a candy – just keep in your mouth for at least an hour and chew after at least 1 hour. Have it 2-3 times daily. Punarnava: It is an Ayurvedic herb that helps in reducing swelling in the joints. Take 3-5 grams of punarnava powder with lukewarm water or milk, daily. Fenugreek seeds: Fenugreek is excellent in pacifying vata and reducing pain and inflammation. Soak 1-2 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds overnight. Make a paste in the next day, add black salt and have it with your meals. You can also use it as a pickle with your meals. People with joint pain should ensure that the above mentioned points are followed for effectively managing and dealing with the disease. It is not a wise idea to disregard joint problems because it may cause serious problems and deformities if left unattended for a long time. It is virtuous and yet found in abundance. A lush green tree that often grows on wild land and along the fences of fields, Nirgundi has no such spectacular features which would attract onlookers. However, it is full of medicinal properties and so has been used in Ayurveda since centuries. Though its presence in urban India has become rare now, it is still not impossible to find Nirgundi trees in your close vicinity or even in your backyard. Ayurvedic texts have given it numerous names such as Sinduwar, Sinduk, Sinduwarak, Shefali and Suwaha. They all reflect its peculiarities and medicinal properties. The name Nirgundi itself means a tree that protects the body by eliminating diseases. The herb has the ability to prevent accumulation of fluids in the body and hence is effective against swollen joints. The Nirgundi tree grows upto 10 meters and has thin, narrow, tapering leaves. Though leaves of Nirgundi are mainly used in Ayurveda, all other parts such has bark, seeds, roots and fruits too have their own medicinal properties.
Use in Joint Diseases Though Nirgundi can be used in variety of pathologies, its main application in Ayurveda has been in rheumatic diseases. Due to its vata and kapha reducing properties, it has always remained in the frontline of Ayurvedic drug in treatment of all types of joint diseases. From an Ayurvedic perspective, joint

diseases arise due to vitiation of vata. The pathway of vata in the joints is blocked by kapha or ama (toxins) which are heavy, thick, sticky and unctuous in properties. Hence, removing these blockages and restoring normal flow of vata holds the key in the treatment of joint diseases. Nirgundi is very effective in this regard. Being light, hot, dry and micro, it effectively curtails kapha and ama formation. Due to its deepan property, it stimulates fire and promotes digestion of toxins. It also acts as an analgesic and is good in reducing joint pain. Nirgundi reduces swelling in the joints by removing barriers from channels and increasing urine production. Since Nirgundi is also light and dry in nature as vata dosha, it is administered in the form of kwath (decoction) or oil in case of long-term treatment.

Scientific Research If you are suffering from joint pain, Nirgundi decoction can be very helpful in dealing with the problem. You can also prepare this at home. Take 100gm of fresh leaves of Nirgundi. Wash them with fresh water. Take 500ml water and boil with Nirgundi leaves until the water comes down to half (250 ml). Strain the mixture with a strainer. Mix little bit of rock salt or honey for taste. Take 10 to 20 ml decoction wice or thrice a day daily.

Ingredients 100 gm fresh ginger 2 cups sugar 1 tablespoon ghee 1/4 cup milk powder 1/2 cup full cream milk A pinch of kesar
Method Wash and peel ginger and chop into small pieces. Take a blender and blend sugar, ginger, milk and milk powder into a fine paste. Soak kesar in 1 tablespoon milk and keep it aside. Now heat ghee in a thick bottom pan, add blended ginger sugar mixture and cook it for about 10 minutes on a medium flame. Keep stirring the mixture. Add kesar strands soaked in milk to it. Take a steel plate, grease with ghee and keep it aside. After about 10 minutes, you will find ginger mixture leaving the sides of the pan, which means it’s ready to spread. Spread this mixture in the greased plate into a block. Cut into desired shape. Note: This recipe will stay fresh for about 6-7 days without refrigeration

inger is a must have and commonly found in every Indian kitchen. Ginger’s hot, unctuous and sweet properties are effective against vata aggravation in the body. Therefore, it’s very effective against joint pain. It has the capacity to stimulate digestive fire (jatharagni) and digest toxins in the body by enhancing pachan. Other ingredients of the recipe such as sugar, ghee, milk and saffron too are vata-reducing and therefore contribute in pacifying vata and rejuvenating tissues. Ghee and milk are particularly
useful as they can reach the tiniest channels of the body and nourish the nerves as well as the bones. Saffron too is a potent vata-reducing analgesic that has tendency to stimulate fire in stomach as well as tissues. So collectively, Adrak Pak stimulates gastric fire, improves taste in mouth, promotes digestion, enhances absorption and prevents indigestion, which all are all responsible for aggravating joint pains. It is an ideal recipe for the rainy season which triggers joint pain.

The new clinics in Mira Road (Thane), Thane (West), Kandivali (East) and Andheri (West) will cater to a large segment of the population in Mumbai, Thane and its surrounding areas that lack authentic Ayurvedic treatment services. The four clinics were inaugurated by Dr. Partap Chauhan, Director Jiva Ayurveda, on May 12, 2014. A press conference was held at Best Western Hotel Sahil, Mumbai to commemorate the occasion. It was attended by well-known dignitaries and several representatives from the media. The conference was honored with the presence of Chief Guest Dr. Kuldip Raj Kohli, Director of AYUSH, Government of Maharashtra. With the launch of the new clinics in Maharashtra, Jiva Ayurveda now operates a chain of 25 clinics across 9 states in India. The clinics in Mumbai have been receiving an overwhelming response since its launch with patients making a beeline for consultations and treatments.

ultiple Natures made its first international debut in France with Director of Jiva Education, Steven Rudolph's 10-day tour, where he conducted lectures and workshops in association with Terre du Ciel, our partners in France.
During the semiannual conference on human development at Aix Les Baines, France, Steven Rudolph conducted his first international workshop on Multiple Natures to a packed audience. After the 90-minute workshop, participants expressed immense enthusiasm in bringing MN to France. They expressed their confidence that the MN Model could significantly help the French people of all ages in finding happiness and satisfaction in their work. Steven Rudolph also conducted workshops in the scenic town of Sagnol near Valence and Chardenoux in France. Steven Rudolph has been invited back for follow up lectures and workshops in France again in November this year.

関節痛に対するアーユルヴェーダの⾒⽅ 関節の疾患に関してアーユルヴェーダには独⾃の解 剖学や病因論があります。関節はアーユルヴェーダ では「サンディsandhi」と呼ばれます。四肢の関 節は⾻組織(アスティダートゥ)と⾻髄組織(マッ ジャダートゥ)から成り⽴っています。関節構造を ⽀えている靭帯は⾎液組織(ラクタダートゥ)から

彼はいつも貧しさを不満に思っ ていました。ある⽇、若者は村 のはずれでサドゥー(旅を続ける修⾏僧) に会い、いつものように彼の運命について 恨みつらみを⾔い始めました。彼の嘆きは 尽きません。サドゥーはとても⾟抱強く聞 いていました。しばらくたってサドゥーは ⼝を開き、おまえは実は百万⻑者なんです よ、と⾔いました。⼤きな富を持っている のだから、むやみに嘆くべきではないと⾔ うのです。若者はそれを聞いて驚きました。 サドゥーはふざけているに違いないと思い ました。しかしサドゥーはふざけておらず、 ⼤真⾯⽬なようでした。
「スワミ様、わたしは⾃分の富 に気が付きました。わたしはも はや貧しくなどありません。」

ギーとは何? ギーは、バターを100°C強で熱 してバターに含まれている水 分を蒸発させ、液体状に融け た部分を濾して作られます。 どんなバターからでもギーは 作れますが、アーユルヴェー ダでは牛のミルクを原料とす るバターから作ったギーが最 高品質とされています。
科学研究結果 現代の研究はギーの様々な側⾯に光を当ててきまし た。その⼀部は以下の通りです。 ギーはスモークポイント(発煙点)が高く、調理の
ときに煙が出にくいため、植物油と異なり危険なフ リーラジカルを形成しません。 バターや油のような油脂は消化を遅らせ胃もたれの
原因になる一方、ギーは胃酸の分泌を刺激して消化 を助けると言われています。 いくつかの研究により、ギーは血清と腸内のコレス
テロールを減らすことが明らかになりました。ギー は胆汁の分泌を促すからです。 ギーは抗酸化物質を豊富に含み、ほかの食品が含有
しているビタミンやミネラルを吸収する働きをする ため、免疫系を強化します。
ギーは冷性、油性、軽性、なめらかという質を もち、味は⽢味とされています。しかし、ギー と反対の性質を持ったハーブと適合し、その ハーブの薬効を体のいたるところに運ぶことが できます。もし温性、乾燥性、重さ、粗さ、硬 さ、苦味、⾟味をもったハーブといっしょに ギーを使ったとすれば、ギーはハーブの性質に 適合し、その性質を体中に運ぶことができると いうことを意味します。アーユルヴェーダの専 ⾨家がギーを多⽤するのはこの特別な性質によ るものです。クスリの効⼒を⾼める物質を「ア ヌパナ」といい、ギーはアヌパナに分類されて います。

ギーの迷信 インド⼈の冠動脈疾患の罹患率の⾼さはギーが原因だと⾔ われてきました。ギーに含まれる飽和脂肪酸、コレステ ロール、コレステロール酸化物が悪さをしているというの です。しかし、バターから作られる本物のギーは善⽟コレ ステロールを豊富に含んでいることが研究からわかってい ます。ギーは⼼臓によい⼀価不飽和脂肪酸もかなり含んで います。ギーは⾎中のHDL(善⽟)コレステロールレベ ルを改善するため、⼼臓にプラスの働きをします。摂取量 をコントロールすれば、ギーは⼼臓の健康にリスクとなる ものではありません。

⾷事やライフスタイルは 関節の痛みを抑えるため に重要な役割を担ってい ます。関節痛は主に ヴァータの増悪によって 起きます。夏のあいだに 冷たいものを⾷べすぎた り飲み過ぎたりするような ヴァータを悪化させる⾷ 事やライフスタイルを続 けると、その後やってくる 秋にはヴァータの増悪に よる症状が現れるように なります。

ーユルヴェーダでは関節はサンディと呼ば れています。体は⾮常に多くの関節から出 来ており、関節が体の動き、可動性、移動性を⽀え ています。関節がなければ、⼈間の動きは不可能で す。関節は⾻をつなぎ、体を構成し、柔軟性をもた らしてくれます。病気やケガで関節に何かしらの不 具合が起きると、関節痛や腫れを引き起こします。 関節痛は変形性関節症(サンディヴァータ)、関節 リウマチ(アーマヴァータ)、痛⾵(ヴァータラク タ)などの内在した病気の症状かもしれないし、筋 緊張、捻挫、ケガの症状であるかもしれません。⾼ 齢者の関節痛は関節の⾻や軟⾻の摩耗によることが ⼀般的ですが、アーユルヴェーダを⽤いればうまく コントロールすることができます。アーユルヴェー ダでは、悪化したヴァータドーシャが関節の病理学 的バランスを崩し、その結果として関節痛が起きる と考えています。関節の腫れは、関節でのアーマ (粘々した毒素)の蓄積が原因です。
関節痛における⾷事の役割 アーユルヴェーダにおいて⾷べ物は薬であり、⾷事 は関節痛をコントロールするために⼤切な役⽬を果 たします。主にヴァータドーシャが関節痛を引き起 こしており、季節的要因が環境や体内にヴァータを 増やす働きをします。ヴァータを増やす⾷べ物を夏 に摂り続けるとヴァータを乱し、秋が始まるころに は本格的な病気を引き起こすようになります。 ヴァータの増悪は、アイスクリーム、冷えた⽔や飲 み物、古い⾷べ物など、冷たい⾷べ物や飲み物の摂 取により起こり、乾燥した⾷べ物の⾷べ過ぎによっ ても起きます。また、過度なセックス、過剰な頑張 り、夜更かし、⼼配、悲しみ、寂しさ、怒りなども ヴァータを増悪させます。

材料 ⽣ショウガ 100g 無精製砂糖 2カップ ギー ⼤さじ1杯 ミルクパウダー 1/4カップ ミルククリーム 1/2カップ サフラン ⼀つまみ
作り⽅ ショウガの⽪をむき、みじん切 りにする。 キサーに砂糖、ショウガ、ミル ククリーム、ミルクパウダーを ⼊れてペースト状にする。サフ ランは⼤さじ1杯の⽜乳について おく。 厚⼿の鍋にギーを⼊れて加熱す る。ショウガのペーストを加え て中⽕で焼く10分間加熱する。 その間、⼿を休めないで混ぜ続 ける。⽜乳についておいたサフ ランを⽜乳ごと加える。 ステンレスのプレートにギーを ぬっておく。 ショウガのペーストを10分くら い加熱すると鍋肌から離れてく るので、これが⽕を消す⽬安と なる。 ステンレスのプレートにショウ ガペーストを薄く伸ばす。お好 みの形に切る。 注:このレシピは冷蔵庫で保存 しなくても6-7日間は美味しくい ただけます。
