Pollution is a mega threat to humanity and more so to us Indians because we choose to look the other way when we see towers of smoke billowing from factory pillars or from old diesel vehicles. The result of our ignorance is in the open for all of us to see. Today, India is counted among countries with air pollution levels so high that it is potentially unsafe for people with respiratory disorders to breathe in major metro cities. New cases of Asthma, Bronchitis, Pulmonary Fibrosis and other problems of the lungs and airways have spiraled unlike what we have seen before. While the powers-that-be take necessary steps to remedy the problems and its causes at the macro level, we can make some minor changes in our own lives and prevent such diseases from happening. This issue of Paramayu touches upon Ayurveda’s outlook on the issue of respiratory diseases and what we can do to keep the Pranvaha Srota (respiratory system) healthy and prevent the common diseases associated with it. As usual we have an interesting choice of articles. Marta and Michal from Poland share their spiritual

encounter with Jiva Institute Director Satyanarayana Dasa Ji and talk about their book publishing plans and their work towards spreading the message of good health through Ayurvedic cooking. Continuing on his last article on how to help you kids set goals for themselves, this time, Steven Rudolph writes on another valuable law of Learning - Making Plans. He goes through some of the simplest tips to help your children plan, respect deadlines and execute their plans. In our Ayurvedic cooking section you will find another delicious and healthy recipe that you can try at home. Dr. Dadi answers some of the questions you have asked us since July. Astrology section takes a special approach this time focusing on the interplays of horoscope and diseases of the respiratory system. And like always, we have several interesting and edifying nuggets of health and wellness information. Best Wishes, Dr. Partap Chauhan

President’s Message By some estimates, in the next decade or so, India will surpass China to become the most populated country in the world. Inevitably, when population increases, there will be an increase in pollution levels. There is an invisible umbilical cord that connects the two. While countries like France, Germany and Britain are pushing the envelope to ban pollution causing vehicles by 2040 to curb air pollution, India will need some more time to pull that off. Steps to create a mass transportation infrastructure as a viable alternative for personal motor vehicles is underway. But until then pollution will continue to claim lives unless we become aware of the consequences of our own actions.

Every little contribution counts when it comes to safeguarding the health of India’s future generations.

Despite prohibitions on burning fossil fuels in kitchen, burning plastics and garbage, it has continued to this day. Old diesel vehicles that are banned in Delhi eventually find their way to bordering states. You shouldn’t be surprised to see polluting vehicles that manage to evade the law and ply on Delhi’s roads bellowing black smoke on kids. A face mask is no match for the fatal air pollution levels in India’s metro cities. A study by Health Effects Institute, USA, revealed that in the year 2015 alone, 1.1 million people died prematurely in India due to respiratory diseases caused by

pollution. Millions more will succumb to respiratory diseases like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), Pneumonia and Tuberculosis (TB) unless we stop air pollution. Ayurveda dwells deeply on the subject of maintaining good respiratory health. Therapeutic processes mentioned under Panchakarma and Ayurvedic herbal formulations has been helping people with respiratory diseases for ages. Treatments and home remedies are very effective in respiratory diseases, but as always prevention is better than treatment. To prevent respiratory diseases, stay away from pollution causing sources. Educate your peers, raise awareness in the younger generation and make small contributions every day, because every little contribution counts when it comes to safeguarding the health of India’s future generations. If you would like to share your personal experiences and thoughts on this topic, feel free to write in to me at rishi@jiva. com Wishing you peace, health and happiness.

COPD: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a collection of different respiratory disorders that causes breathlessness and patients are unable to exhale or inhale normally and wheeze when they breathe. Lack of energy and tightness in the chest are some other symptoms that could signify COPD. Under certain circumstances, especially due to infections or environmental factors, symptoms may worsen suddenly and last for several days. This is called an exacerbation of COPD. Prevention is the best defence against COPD since it is not completely curable. Bronchitis: Bronchial tubes in people who have bronchitis make more mucus as a natural defence against germs, which leaves less space in the tube to carry air, as a result patients experience breathlessness and experience shortness of breath, fatigue and cough up discoloured (yellowish-grey, grey) sputum. Causes of bronchitis are weak immunity, smoking, gastric reflux and exposure to irritants. Pneumonia: Pneumonia is also an infection of the lungs in which the aveoli (air sacs within the lungs) are filled with puss, which makes breathing difficult. Since this is a contagious disease, children as well as adults can become infected by coming in contact with an infected person.

How to keep the Pranvaha Srota Healthy? All organs in the human respiratory system are very important. Throughout the span of our life, we use these organs every single day to breathe. Our respiratory system is under constant attack

from disease causing pathogens, environmental pollutants, allergens, smoke and dust. Hence, it is vital to prioritize your respiratory health. Here are some useful tips to keep the respiratory system healthy: Avoid smoking and company of smokers: Smoking is the biggest cause of respiratory problems today. Smoking can cause chronic bronchitis, emphysema, chronic lung diseases and even lung cancer. Cigarettes and bidis cause extensive damage to the lung structure and reduces the lung’s capacity to extract oxygen from air and supply it to the blood stream. Second-hand smoke is equally dangerous as smoking. If possible avoid the company of smokers, when they are smoking. Yoga and Pranayama: Special breathing techniques such as Kapalbhaati and Bhastrika have significant benefits for patients of asthma, bronchitis and lung congestion. Practising these will help you strengthen the lungs, improve immunity and provide relief from mental and physical stress. Practising these yoga asanas for a few minutes daily can help you keep your lungs strong and disease-free. Morning Walks: If you are unable to practise yoga, try to incorporate 20-30 minutes of morning walk in your daily schedule. Morning time is considered best for mild physical exercises such as walks and stretches. Choose a good location without pollution where you can walk and do simple stretching exercises. Keep your hands clean: Most contagious diseases are spread by touch. Touching infected surfaces or infected objects is the most common reason for contacting disease causing germs. Use a hand sanitizer

to wash your hands before consuming food or after being outdoors or in a public place. Avoid Indoor Allergens: Pets in your house shed skin and hair on a regular basis. This floats around in the air and can cause allergic reactions in the respiratory system. If you are allergic to carpet dust or flower pollen, take all precautions to prevent them from coming inside since this can cause serious wheezing or breathlessness. Face mask: Rampant pollution in the air cannot be avoided unless you actively protect yourself against the pollutants from entering your respiratory system. Use a facemask to prevent dust and pollutants from entering your nose and respiratory channel. Anti-oxidant rich foods: Seasonal fruits and vegetables are very beneficial in enhancing your immunity and supplying you with essential nutrients which strengthens your body’s internal defence mechanism and prevents disease causing germs from entering your body. Take vaccination: Vaccination is a definitive way to prevent germ infections from causing diseases. Adults who have COPD are likely to be get complications from flu infections, hence influenza & TDAP vaccination can be taken each year. Please talk to your doctor about the right way to recieve vaccination for respiratory problems.
