I

n Ayurveda, the equlibrium of doshas (Samdosh) is integral to the definition of a healthy person. The answer to a healthy life requires that the three Doshas 'Vata, Pitta and Kapha' should be in unison. To stay healthy, Kapha is very important in the Tridoshas.

Kapha exists in the body, and is found in most of the organs. It provides immunity, nourishment and protection for the entire body.

Importance of Kapha What increases with water is known as Kapha. 'What proliferate into water in called Kapha'. Its main function is to hold the cells together. Body parts like bones, muscle, nerves and vessels are held together by Kapha. While building a house, cement is used to keep the bricks together, in the same way Kapha acts as an adhesive to keep vital body parts together. Just like a house without cement would be impossible, likewise a body without Kapha is unimaginable. Therefore Kapha has a vital role in our body structure.

From the bodily perspective Kapha produces heaviness, stability, solidity and oiliness. Just like the moon provides moisture, and nourishment to life on earth, in the same way Kapha provides for the 10 – Paramayu – Jan 2015

body. In order to remain healthy, our immunity power should be at the optimum level. In Ayurveda the immunity power is linked to Ojus or OoJ power. Kapha is directly related to OoJ. If Kapha is in a balanced state then Ojus will be strong and we will be protected from different harmful diseases.

Kapha keeps all the bodily cells intact, joints and skin lubricated, helps in producing new tissues protects from harmful diseases and helps in treating diseases. The imbalance of Kapha causes many diseases like throat, nose and lung sputum, weak gastric fire, obesity, swelling on the body, swelling on the joints heaviness, asthma, cough, lumps formation and more.

Kapha can manifest itself in the emotional aspect where it connects to different emotions like love, patience and forgiveness. Apart from this Kapha can provide mental strength and mental peace.

People who have a balance in their Kapha or have Kapha constitution (Prakruti) are by nature sincere and kind. They look for the betterment of other people and aspire to unite people. In this modern age people have developed economically however the mental strength, family love, forgiveness and overall contentment is lacking.

In Ayurveda health is clearly defined as not only limited to physical health, but also to the mental, societal and spiritual health. cravings and depression. The zeal of a person gets diminished and lethargy arises. Therefore to have mental peace, happiness and contentment a balance of Kapha is essential.

Intimacy, togetherness and love are traits that have quickly diminished over the last few decades. Our society which calls the whole earth as one family too has witnessed its consequences. In families and society humans are now autonomous. Bringing together multiple people (women, men, children), transforms a family then into a society. If the people have a healthy state of Kapha then the family and society will stand united. In the modern world our lifestyles, eating habits and living standards have dramatically changed. The influence of television and the use of mobile phones and computers have caused our Kapha to dwindle. Junk food, spicy and fried food, meat, alcohol and tobacco cause the imbalance of Kapha and increase Vata and Pitta.

This is why today the majority of people are pushed by negative emotions like anger, jealousy, lust, ego and greed and allow these thoughts to influence them and do destructive deeds/acts. This is another reason why our families are breaking apart and our society is splitting up. Just like the Kapha in our body connects all our body parts in the same manner to bring about unity in families and society, it is essential that people need to have stability, sweetness, power of forgiveness, contentment and love bestowed by Kapha. Not only is Kapha essential for the body, but also for the mind, society and the health of the family. Therefore inside the body and outside (society) to join everybody, for health, for defense Kapha is essential for all these things. In Ayurveda

A

rectile dysfunction (ED) is a common sexual problem found among 40 per cent of the men at some point in their lives.

When a man is unable to achieve or sustain erection, it is called ED. It is often referred to as impotence. In Ayurveda, ED is referred to as Klaibya.

ccording to the traditional Indian medical science Ayurveda, the human mind and the body are inter-related.

The emotions we feel directly influence our physiology. Similarly, fluctuations in body alter our emotions. Ayurveda considers a human being as a combination of gross physical body, mind and the spiritual self (atma). It treats the ailments of the body on the basis of vata, pitta and kapha, called the three doshas. As per Ayurveda, the nature of a human being is fixed at the time of conception and it is unchangeable. However, the nature in relation to the gunas of prakriti, that is, sattva, rajas and tamas, can be modified by one's lifestyle, food habits, associations and by following some specific spiritual practices.

Although Ayurveda does not specify any specific relation among the doshas and gunas but by one's own experience one can conceive that such a relation indeed exists. The influence of doshas as well as gunas has been described in Ayurvedic literature such as Charaka Samhita. Any imbalance in the doshas is the cause of disease, both physical as well as mental. Because of this intimate relation between the doshas and the gunas, the doshas have a great role to play in spirituality. Spirituality aims at transcending the gunas of nature. In this article, we consider the role of kapha in spirituality.

Kapha is heavy, slow, cold, oily, slimy, liquid, soft, dense and static. It is sweet and salty in taste. These qualities of kapha influence the nature of a kapha person. People with kapha nature are predominantly calm, quiet, steady and serious. They tend to enjoy the pleasure of home and family. They are naturally patient, have fortitude and are humble. However, if kapha goes out of balance, then these traits engender passivity, attachment, possessiveness and greed. In the Bhagavad Gita, Bhagavan Shri Krishna describes three gates to hell (17.21): “Material desire, anger and greed this is the triple gate to hell that brings ruination to the self. Therefore, these three should be shunned.”

These three gates are also related to the three doshas of vata, pitta and kapha respectively.

When vata is disturbed a person has too many desires for sense pleasures. If these desires are not fulfilled then such a person becomes furious and thus his/her pitta becomes disturbed. However, if the desire is fulfilled and the person is not using his/her intellect to

What causes ED? ED can be due to the use of certain drugs (antidepressants), neurological disorders, cavernosal disorders (Peyronie's disease), etc. Sometimes, impotence can be traced back to certain health problems like diabetes, severe depression, or severe reaction to any drug. Excessive alcohol drinking and cigarette smoking too are causative factors. Mental stress too is many times responsible for ED.

How to assess ED?

“One whose mind remains undisturbed in the midst of sorrows, who does not hanker after happiness, who is free of material attachment (raga), fear (bhaya) and anger (krodha), is a sage of stable wisdom.” discriminate between need and greed then greed follows naturally, making the kapha dosha imbalanced. Thus, although, it seems that the doshas are only related to health but they have a deeper implication to one's spiritual life.

In the Bhagavd Gita, when Arjuna asked the symptoms of an accomplished yogi Bhagwan Shri Krishna gave a detailed reply to this question. One of the verse he spoke is as follows (2.56): “One whose mind remains undisturbed in the midst of sorrows, who does not hanker after happiness, who is free of material attachment (raga), fear (bhaya) and anger (krodha), is a sage of stable wisdom.”

In this verse, the words “material attachment” (raga), “fear” (bhaya), and “anger” (krodha) refer to the three dosha of kapha, vata and pitta. The implication of all this is that if our doshas are balanced then it will help us to attain perfection in yoga. Therefore, Patanjali in his Yoga Sutra (2.37) considers disease caused by the imbalance of doshas as one of the obstacles in the success of yoga path. Of the three doshas, kapha is related to desires or attachment (raga) that is the root cause of anger and fear. That means if kapha is under control it will help one to remain balanced in one's attachment.

ED assessment is done at the physical level or mental level or at both levels. Obtaining full erections at times, such as when asleep (when the mind and psychological issues, if any, are less present), tends to suggest that the physical structures are functionally working and the cause might be probably mental. As against this, failure to obtain erection even in relaxed atmosphere may indicate dysfunction on physical level.

Ayurveda and ED? According to Ayurveda, impotence is basically a condition of low vitality. Generally vitiation of Vata dosha is responsible for Klaibya or ED. On the basis of the cause, seven types of Klaibya are mentioned in Ayurveda.

Since Klaibya or ED is primarily a Vata disorder, strengthening therapies are utilized in Ayurveda

Ayurvedic treatment of ED Since Klaibya or ED is primarily a Vata disorder, strengthening therapies are utilized in Ayurveda. Vajikarna is a branch of Ayurveda that deals with aphrodisiacs and contains many effective therapies and herbal solutions that can completely cure this disorder.

Five things which patients suffering from ED should try to follow are:

Home remedies for ED  Put 1 teaspoon of garlic paste in 1 cup of milk and simmer it for 15 – 20 minutes.

Take this preparation once a day.

 Take simple, chemical-free diet 

Prevent indigestion, constipation and vitiation of Apan Vayu that is responsible for penile erection. .



Take 2 dried dates, 2 almonds, 2 pistachio nuts and 1/4 teaspoon of quince seeds with a cup of milk at bedtime.



Avoid excessive salt, acids, tobacco and alcohol





Most dry fruits, fresh fruits and milk products increase sexual vigour

Place 30 gm of raisins in one cup of milk and simmer the mixture for 10 minutes. Take it at bedtime. Gradually increase the quantity of raisins up to 50 gm.



Performing Yogasan and Suryanamaskar regularly improves muscle tone required for erection



Take 5 – 10 gm of powder of lady's finger root (okra) with a glass of milk and 2 teaspoons of candy sugar at bedtime.

Interestingly, the ancient science of Ayurveda convincingly explains the offset of such problems during childhood.

ccording to Ayurveda, human beings go through three different phases in life, viz. childhood, middle age and old age.

Ayurveda defines the boundary lines for these phases as: childhood – from birth to 18 years; middle age – from 19 to 60 years and old age – 61 years onwards .

According to Ayurveda, each of these three phases is dominated by a different dosha. While childhood is dominated by kapha dosha, middle age is governed by pitta dosha and old age is marked by vata dosha.

The dominance of a dosha makes a person susceptible towards the diseases caused by that dosha while this protects the individual from diseases caused by the other doshas.

This means that children would be more susceptible towards problems caused by kapha dosha but would be less likely to suffer from diseases caused by pitta dosha or vata dosha.

Kapha problems which your child may face Children may be roughly divided into three groups as per their ages: Upto 3 yrs – Infants 4 to 12 yrs – Babies 13 to 18 yrs – Toddlers

In the first group, the most common kapha ailments are cold & cough.

Common cold – Running nose or common cold is a usual problem among children. Many times it is deemed as an allergy caused by allergens like dust, smoke and so on. The secretion emerging from the nose may be watery, milky white, yellow, green etc and suggests vitiation of kapha dosha.

Cough –Though cough troubles throughout the day, paroxysms worsen generally at night. The cough might be dry or wet.

In the second group, the most common kapha ailments are asthma and tuberculosis.

Juvenile Asthma– Considerable number of children in the world suffer from asthma whose attacks generally occur in cold seasons and are marked by symptoms such as breathlessness, cough & running nose. Fever may be present in some cases. Generally there is sputum discharge from mouth which again suggests vitiation of kapha dosha.

Pulmonary Tuberculosis – In a poor country like India, tuberculosis is not uncommon among children. In this condition, the unctuous, slimy kapha from lungs dries out. Instead of nourishing the body, it starts blocking the channels.

Obesity – This is also a kapha problem which is becoming far too common especially among the urban kids. Excess consumption of junk foods, backery products, sweets, chocolates coupled by lack of physical activities, athletic games and overindulgence in computer like gadgets has increased the gravity of this problem tremendously. All the above mentioned factors cause intense aggravation of kapha dosha leading to overweight due to kapha's heavy property.

Following the daily and seasonal regimens charted out by Ayurveda and consuming certain Ayurvedic herbs and tonics can help your child keep healthy in all seasons. Some guidelines in this regard are as follows:

Ayurvedic herbs for kapha problems Some Ayurvedic herbs and tonic that successfully combat hazards caused by kapha and at the same time can support the growth of the child should be given to the children. Such herbs are: Ashwagandha (for combatting respiratory problems); Turmeric (for strengthening the immune system); Balachaturbhadra churna (for strengthening children's digestion power); Ashwagandhadi Lehya (for strengthening the immune system and gastric fire) and Aravindasav (for combating children-related problems caused by kapha dosha).

In the third group, the most common kapha ailment is obesity.

Food should be as per the child's constitution, so that the child can digest it easily. Food that is not as per the constitution of the child is more likely to weaken the gastric fire and aggravate kapha dosha.

Needless exposure to excess cold, rain and airconditioners should be prevented as they vitiate kapha dosha and can weaken the immune system.

The rooms of children should be kept dry and clean and free from excessive moisture and wetness which can aggravate kapha dosha.

Food and activities should be altered as per seasonal changes, as the food or activities that are incompatible with season can aggravate the doshas.

Care must be taken while choosing eatable gifts for children

Yogasan and Suryanamaskar can strengthen the immune system and gastric fire and keep kapha at bay.

Children doing them have less chance of suffering from problems like cough, obesity etc.

Some Home Remedies for Kapha problems: Boil ½ teaspoon of freshly freshly-grated ginger in a glass of milk and add ¼ teaspoon of turmeric powder to it. Have it twice a day.

Massaging the chest with warm sesame oil (5 ml) with a pinch of salt added to it helps to loosen the phlegm deposited in the chest, especially when followed with steam inhalation Consuming 2 petals of garlic with honey relieves asthma & cough attack.

Ayurveda to your child’s rescue Next time if your child suffers from cough and cold, then don't get surprised, annoyed or perplexed.

hough the bark of many trees is used medicinally in Ayurvedic preparations, it's only cinnamon which has been named after it. The Sanskrit name of cinnamon is Twak which means bark and underlines its medicinal utility. The fact that this bark is sweetish in taste, has given birth to its other synonym, Darusita. The meaning of the word Darusita is a wood that tastes sweet like sugar.

Cinnamon is bitter sweet in taste, hot in potency and unctuous, light in properties. It stimulates gastric fire, digests toxins and is astringent in action. It is analgesic in action. Cinnamon has coagulant property and is a uterine stimulant. If used for long time, it improves complexion and sperm production.

Cinnamon Ayurvedic Uses and Actions Local: It is blood alterative, stimulant and analgesic.

Mouth refresher and gives strength to gums. Hence, a piece of its bark should be chewed to stop vomiting and nausea. A swab made in its oil be held between teeth for dental caries. A thin paste should be applied to the skin in skin diseases. Application of oil cleanses and heals a tubercular ulcer.

Digestive system: Being fire stimulant, ama digestive, anti-dyspepsia and vata onward movement propogator due to its bitter, pungent tastes and hot potency, it should be used to treat heaviness in stomach, abdominal pain, pricking pain in abdomen and dyspepsia. Its powder be used in diarrhea , colitis, sprue. Trijata [tvak, ela, tamalpatra] be used to treat abdominal colic, low fire. Should be used in enteric fever being anti microbial.

Water system: Its hot infusion be used in ama induced excessive thirst. Its piece be chewed in Pitta fever in the presence of dryness of throat.

Respiratory system: It eliminates Kapha due to pungent , bitter tastes and rough, light, hot and penetrating qualities. It liquifies Kapha and absorbs remaining kapha. Cinnamic acid contained in it has an antitubercular activity.

Hence, its powder or oil should be used in cough, asthama and tuberculosis. A decoction made of shunthi, tvak and dhanyaka be used in cold, cough, headache and vata kapha fever. Kapha accumulated in respiratory tract causes obstruction to the movement of udanavayu.

Obstruction in the rasa channel prevents adequate nutrition of respiratory channel. Tvak removes obstruction in channels by eliminating phlegm.

Knowing more about Cancer—Cell division in the form of mitosis is an essential continuous process in our body that keeps the cells reproducing.

Through cell division a mature cell divides itself into two daughter cells. This is responsible for keeping our constituent body parts alive and healthy. A daughter cell, thus produced, must be an exact replica of its mother. In case of an error in the duplication at the genetic level, the daughter cells might become mutated or modified. These mutated cells start duplicating themselves in an abnormal way, often giving rise to a situation where extra tissue is formed, which is antagonistic to the rest of the body cells. We call this disease cancer.

Sometimes, in worse situations,

the mutations are such that they are carried away to another similar body organ located at a different place inside the body through the lymph fluid. This type of mutant cell is then said to exhibit ‘metastasis’. For example, in the case of metastatic renal cell carcinoma, mutant cells in the kidney can move to the lungs and then to the bone. Here, the patient might show symptoms of cancer of the kidney, lungs and bones.

Cancer usually spreads very fast and a patient can meet death in less than 6 months. Therefore, remedial measures need to be undertaken as soon as cancer is detected in the body.

Various remedies available for cancer either try to put a check on the duplicating process of the mutant cells at genetic level or kill the entire collection of affected cells. The process, whether done chemically or through radiation, always runs the risk of affecting the neighbouring normal cells.

The role of medha dhatu & kapha dosha In Ayurveda, Medha dhatu (Fat) is one of the seven fundamental principles (elements) that support the basic structure (and functioning) of the body. Medha dahtu is formed from mamsa dhatu (muscles). The nutrients required to form medha dhatu are present in mamsa dhatu. These nutrients get metabolized with water and form medha dahtu. Medha dahtu is snigdha (oily) and soft.

In Ayurveda, obesity is known as Medarog, which is also caused by the aggravation of Kapha. Kapha is an Ayurvedic humor which is dense, heavy, slow, sticky, wet and cold in nature. It governs all structure and lubrication in the mind and body apart from controlling weight and formation of all the seven tissues - nutritive fluids, blood, fat, muscles, bones, marrow and reproductive tissues.

In a balanced state, Kapha gives nourishment to these tissues through various micro channels. However, when it is aggravated, Kapha leads to production of toxins (ama) in the body. These toxins (ama) are heavy and dense in nature and accum-ulate in weaker channels of the body, causing their blockage. In the case of an obese person, toxins (ama) accumulate in Medovahi Srotas (fat channels), thereby leading to an increase in the production of fat tissue (Meda Dhatu). When the body produces more fat tissues, it causes an increase in weight.

In a balanced state, Kapha gives nouri-shment to these tissues through various micro channels. However, when it is aggravated, Kapha leads to production of toxins (ama) in the body.

Some Home Remedies Take 1 cup of warm water with 1 teaspoon each of lime juice and honey and a pinch of black pepper. Have this on an empty stomach twice a day.

Mix powdered long pepper, black pepper and dried ginger root in equal quantities.

Have ½ teaspoon of this twice a day with lukewarm water.

Diet & Lifestyle Advice

Avoid high carbohydrates like polished rice and potato.

Avoid oily and fried foods, processed foods, fatty foods like butter, purified butter, cheese, whole-milk yogurt, cream, chocolate, etc.

Have more bitter vegetables like bitter gourd and the bitter variety of drumsticks

Replace refined flour with whole-wheat flour and rice with brown rice or parboiled rice It is very important to engage in daily exercise in the form of walking, jogging, swimming or any other physical activity that is not competitive.

Increase intake of fruits, salads and vegetables.

Yoga and Pranayam: Doing Naukachalanasan and Kapalbhati Pranayam also helps to reduce fat and fight obesity.

racked heels are a sign of lack of attention to foot care rather than just overexposure or lack of moisturizing. Medically, cracked heels are also known as heel fissures. Fissures are regular linear cut wounds and mostly affect the surface level which comprises of the epidermis.

Actually, the process of sweating keeps our skin moist and soft. Aggravated Vata dries up our sweat glands which then causes dryness of your skin.

Cracked heels is also called Paddari. It comes in “shudrarog”. It is also called

bivai and vipadika, too. Thus cracked heels are painful. If you are in a habit of walking bare foot for a long time, it can result in cracked heels because of vitamin vata.

The problem of cracked heels can be addressed in four ways: Cleansing, Oleation & Fomentation: Make a paste of wheat bran, coarsely grinded kernel of almonds, coarsely grinded masoor dal in equal amount, and add milk. Cleanse the cracked heels with this paste.

Dip feet in warm mustard oil for 10-15 minutes in bedtime.

Wipe the feet with a towel.

Packs & Creams: Make a pack of bee wax (50 gms) plus sandhev salt (10 gms) and apply on the heels. You can wear socks after that.

Make ointment of honey (50 gms), ghee (25 gms) and mustard oil (25 gms) and apply on the affected area.

Other usefull tips: If you are overweight, the continued pressure on feet can cause cracked heels.

Avoid walking bare foot for a long time as this will vitiates vata causing cracked heels.

Dry and cold weather increases vata in the body and may cause cracked heels so try to cover your foot with socks.

Avoid thin soled shoes or footwear and open-backed shoes.

JD Womens' students visit Jiva

eventy five management students of J D Women's College, Magadh University visited the premises of Jiva Ayurveda in Faridabad in early October last year. The purpose of this visit was to understand how Ayurveda can be used in the modern context to create a sustainable business model through a entrepreneurial mindset. These students were taken around the Jiva complex and the Panchakarma Centre and were shown the facilities and services which the company offers to its customers. After this, they were taken on a guided tour of the Jiva Telemedicine Centre where they were shown the hi-tech facilities for doctor/patient counselling. This short trip was an eye-opener for these students on the latest techniques of Ayurvedic medicine and cure offered by Jiva Ayurveda.

Dr Harshvardhan Applauds Jiva Ayurveda at 6th WAC

iva Ayurveda, participated in a big way through a large stall which stood out for its ethnic design and its interiors at the 6th World Ayurveda Congress and Arogya Expo which was held from 6-9 November, 2014 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. Hundreds of visitors met Dr Partap Chauhan who administered the VPK test (vata, pitta, kapha test ) on the visitors. The visitors were thrilled to know about their prakriti and how they could lead a healthy ayurvedic lifestyle. The Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi delivered the valedictory address and said “if Ayurveda is presented as a way of life, it can acquire global recognition like yoga.” The Honourable Science & Technology Minister Shri Harshvardhan too visited the Jiva stall on the inauguration day and appreciated the initiatives taken by Jiva Ayurveda in making concerted efforts to bring standardization in ayurvedic treatment.

Jiva launches 5 clinics in Haryana, Rajasthan, UP and Maharashtra

iva Ayurveda recently launched new clinics in north & cenral India in last three months of the year 2014. Two clinics were launched in Uttar Pradesh: the first one in Gomti Nagar, Lucknow on October 15 and the second clinic in Kanpur Road, Allahabad on October 17. The third clinic was launched in Rajasthan in Gopalpura, Jaipur on November 4. The next followed the second clinic in Gurgaon, Harayana. In December two new clinic were launched in Maharashtra in Pune and Nagpur. This was followed by a clinic in Jabalpur which is Jiva's third clinic in Madhya Pradesh and the most recent being in Meerut and holy city of Varanasi that took the tally of Jiva's UP clinics to nine. With the addition of these new clinics, Jiva Ayurveda now operates 37 Ayurveda clinics spanning over 10 states in India. Dr Partap Chauhan, Director, Jiva Ayurveda who was present at the launch of all these three clinics said: “Ayurveda is 'a way of life' that guides us on how to listen to our bodies and read the signals of distress to maintain good health and make our lives more balanced, productive and contented.” He also informed the press that Jiva Ayurveda is providing Ayurveda support to patients suffering from chronic problems in collaboration with international institutions such as Autism society in Poland and Dr Hagiwara in Japan.
