• lung demonstrations
Plastic Lung Apparatus Similar to the 7-1203-12 but with one balloon for easier viewing, the new plastic lung apparatus demonstrates how the lungs work. As the “lung” fills with air, through relaxation and contraction of the diaphragm muscle, students visualize how our lungs work. A sturdy rubber sheet replicates the diaphragm. As the rubber sheet is pulled downward, the pressure within the chamber causes the “lung” to expand and take in air. When released, the “lung” will deflate. Lesson plan is included; 8-1/4” x 8-1/4” x 8-1/4”; 1.3lbs. 7-1203-1 Plastic Lung Apparatus

Plastic Lung Apparatus W/ 2 Balloons
Allow students to build a demonstration model of a human lung and learn the basic concepts of respiratory physiology! The kit includes a transparent plastic container, Y-tube “trachea”, balloon “lungs”, rugged rubber sheet “diaphragm” and the necessary hardware and instruction sheet. 10” dia; .02lb.
Show how the lungs are emptied and filled with air by relaxation and contraction of the diaphragm muscle! Two balloons attached to a Y-tube simulate the lungs. The chest cavity is represented by a half-gallon plastic bell jar with an open top and stout rubber sheet which acts as a diaphragm. As the diaphragm is pulled downward, the atmospheric pressure is lowered inside the chamber causing the lungs to expand, taking in air. When the diaphragm is released, the lungs deflate. Helpful hints to maximize product use!
Grease an All Glass Stopcock (1) First, clean the stopcock. (2) Then, apply two rings of stopcock grease around the stopcock. Be careful to avoid getting grease in the hole (3) Finally, insert the stopcock into the burette and twist a few times to distribute the grease.
Freeing Frozen Stopcocks
Automatic Burettes w/ Burette Tip Assembly The burette tip is attached with a synthetic latex tube, and a glass bead inside the tube is used as a valve to control the liquid flow. The “Bead Valve” used in conjunction with a Burette tip is a very simple, precise, and effective way of controlling the flow of a liquid. By slightly squeezing the glass bead within the rubber tubing, the diameter of the tubing is deformed and allows fluid to pass.
The most common reason for a frozen stopcock is lack of thorough previous cleaning. Once the stopcock is stuck, some options are: (1) Submerge the entire barrel and plug in fresh soda. Soak until the soda is no longer bubbling. Often the bubbles will work into the joint and loosen it. This may take several attempts. (2) If you’ve tried the soda a few times to no avail, try applying a low level of heat, and applying only a modest amount of pressure. Don’t forget to wear gloves. (3) If the heat doesn’t work, try soaking the burette in water for a few days. (4) After soaking, attempt the soda process again. If this doesn’t work, most likely the glass surfaces of the plug and barrel have been fused with a contaminant, and the burette will have to be replaced.

PTC Paper
Wide Range Solution, 2 oz
The ability to taste PTC is a hereditary trait and varies with each individual. PTC paper, which is often used when discussing heredity in biology classes, is paper soaked with phenol thiocarbamide (PTC). The LD50 for PTC is 3.4mg/kg. Such a low LD50 reveals than PTC is a very hazardous substance. The solution to make the taste test paper, contains approximately 500ml of PTC per liter of water. Through some very crude arithmetic, we calculate that each strip of PTC paper would contain approximately 0.3mg of PTC. We estimate that a student weighing about 110 lbs would have to lick (which is how the test is performed) and ingest about 500 2” x 1/4” strips of PTC paper to reach the LD50. You will have to determine if you wish to use this taste paper in your classroom. Vial of 100.
