Parapedia Featured Article: Chupacabra
Translated from Spanish to English as “goatsucker, the Chupacabra is an animal first sighted in Hispanic America. This livestock-slaughtering creature is said to be a combination features of a kangaroo, gargoyle, and the gray alien of abduction lore. It leaves its animal victims bloodless with puncture wounds similar to vampire marks. Most cases describe the creature as 3-5 feet tall with a pronounced lower jaw, large red eyes, small nostrils, large round head, and a thin mouth with curved fangs. It has a rough black coat, with a row of spikes down its back, and, according to some witnesses, it can change its skin color at will. The creature can run very fast and jump far as well as high. It hisses and screeches when startled, and is said to leave behind a sulfur smell. [1] -4-

Sightings Hispanic cryptozoologist, Scott Corrales, claims that the first modern sightings began in 1974, however, they even date back further to the Taino Indian tales of the Maboya. [2] The first authoritative recorded sightings occurred in small villages in Puerto Rico. In September of 1995, small livestock were found devoid of blood in the villages of Morovis and Orocovis. A young college student saw it tear a part the family goat, and two fishermen claimed to have been chased by the creature. [3] Hundreds of sightings and over a thousand slain animals continued to be reported in Puerto Rico throughout the next year. In 1996, Miami, Florida, two ranchers lost sixty-nine animals to such a creature, as witnessed by an elderly woman. In the same year, in Tucson, Arizona, authorities received two reports of a Chupacabra in entering homes. [4] From 2000 through 2007, Chupacabras were reported throughout Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, as far north as Maine, in St.John and the Dominican Republic, in Nicaragua and Columbia, and as far as the Philippines and Russia. In Texas, DNA tests later revealed that they were actually coyotes with a severe case of mange. [5] Even though there is no historical proof of attacks on humans by this creature, in both Puerto Rico and Mexico today, local governments take them seriously. They worry about children in poorer areas being attacked. [6] Theories The International Society of Cryptozoology claims that Chupacabras folklore comprises mixed traditions about several creatures. [7] Some crypotozoologists believe that its origins can be related to UFO sightings. UFO researcher, Tito Armstrong and cryptozoologist, Scott Corales suggested that the Chupacabra is a wild alien pet left on Earth. [8] Professor Juan Riviero of Puerto Rico claims that Rhesus monkeys, brought near the coast for experimental purposes, are responsible for the numerous livestock deaths, as they kill for sport. [9] In Nicaragua, an alleged Chupacabras was killed when it attacked a herd. After close investigation by veterinarians, the creature looked like a combination of several species, leading to the theory of a NASA genetic experiment that went awry. Similar beliefs led Chilean cryptozoologists to claim that NASA was conducting genetic tests in the Chilean desert on mandrills, an animal similar to the baboon. [10]
