KM Photo/Video Classifications

By Doug Kelley, PhD, CH, CSL and Jari Mikkola, MCS, BA, CLPI • March 2008 Photographs and video anomalies are extremely difficult to prove as paranormal in nature. All measures should be taken into consideration such as:

• The Exif info is intact for all digital photos.

• Several before and after photos are available (or the entire negative strip if a film camera).

• Ample before and after video footage is available of the area in which the anomaly occurred.

CLASS 1 (PARANORMALLY SIGNIFICANT)

This classification means that all natural explanations have been strenuously ruled out and what remains indicates—but does not necessarily prove—a paranormal conclusion.

Examples that may be classified as Paranormally Significant include: • Apparition.

The photograph/video irrefutably contains an apparition; full or partial, solid or transparent, human or animal.

• Video Anomalies.

• Movement of an object of its own volition.

• A video anomaly that shows a decidedly intelligent flight path, i.e., one that moves, stops/ hovers, then moves again and/or changes direction.

• Other Anomaly.

The photograph/video contains another type of anomaly that cannot be explained as a natural occurrence.

CLASS 2 (PARANORMALLY COMPELLING)

This classification means that a natural explanation is unlikely but cannot be ruled out completely. What remains could—but not necessarily is—paranormal in nature.

Examples that may be classified as Paranormally Compelling include: • Ectoplasm/Mist.

An amorphous cloud that appears in a photograph as diffuse (widely spread, scattered, or dispersed), clear or blurred, light or dark, etc. A second photo taken within two minutes must show no mist.

• Vortex.

An anomaly that appears as a rapidly rotated movement of energy or matter with what appears to be a beginning and end point in the photograph. Often—but not always—what appears to be an orb moving very rapidly in the photograph with a very short shutter speed.

• Other Anomalies.

The photograph/video contains another type of anomaly that cannot be conclusively ruled out as a natural occurrence.

CLASS 3 (FALSE-POSITIVE)

This classification means that the photo/video anomaly—while appearing to be paranormal in nature—can be explained as a natural occurrence or the weight of evidence points to a natural occurrence.

Examples that may be classified as False-Positives include: • Orbs.

For all intents and purposes, orbs are not paranormal in nature and can easily be explained as dust, moisture, pollen, and airborne contaminants.

• Light Streaks/Light Snakes/Energy Rods.

This phenomena can almost always be explained as camera shake.

• Lens Flare/Camera Anomalies.

Lens flare happens when a light source is in front of the camera but out of the field of view.

Researchers and scientists from around the world have received pictures of departed colleagues through television.

Parapedia Featured Article: Instrumental Transcommunication (ITC) Researchers use tape recorders, TV’s, radios, computers, telephones and other technical devices to get meaningful information from the spirit world in such forms as voices, images and text. Though the most common form of ITC are disembodied voices, or Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP), there have been incidents where the face of the deceased has been seen and identified by their relatives breaking through a regular television broadcast.

Research The idea of having an instrument to contact the deceased dates back to Thomas Edison in the 1920’s.

He thought it would be possible to build an apparatus that would be so delicate to allow spirits from another realm to communicate with us on this existence. Unfortunately, Edison died before he could build such a contraption. [1] Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) experiments, using a tape recorder, produced the first ITC contact. Friedrich Juergenson observed in 1959 strange voices on his tape. First he believed to have included parts of a radio program, until under that, he noted voices that he knew and that came from persons that had passed away for a long time. Scientists, radio experts and sound technicians tested collected tapes with such voices; however, no one could find a valid technical declaration for this phenomenon. [2] Marcello Bacci of Grossetto, Italy, has used an old vacuum tube radio for ITC experiments since the 1960s, and today, his “spirit team” not only speaks to him clearly through the radio, but also, sometimes sings to him in a sort of other worldly chorus. [3] Since 1980, there have been several claims of images and messages on telephones and faxes, television screens and appearing on computer picture files. In 1985, Klaus Schreiber claimed to receive spirit images on his TV set. Several famous people and deceased relatives were seen. With a video camera aimed at the TV, and feeding the output of the camera back into the TV, he achieved a feedback loop, which resulted in spirit faces slowly forming over a period of numerous frames. In the 1980s George Meek and Bill O’Neil developed the Spiricom device, a set of 13 tone generators that spanned the range of the adult male voice. When O’Neil spoke into the Spiricom device, his voice was wrapped up in the buzzing sounds, and when his spirit friends spoke to him, their voices also became enmeshed in the Spiricom sounds. [5] Friedrich Juergenson was buried on October 21st, 1987. At the same time Claude Thorlin (Sweden) was advised by his mediumistic wife to watch the TV. The TV was set to a free channel and suddenly the picture appeared. He appeared again in 1994, as the first 24-second color transmission received on a TV in Germany. [6] In 1995 the International Network for Instrumental Transcommunication (INIT) was founded in Luxemburg. Today, scientists and researchers continue to attempt to communicate with other worldly realms and develop new technology to achieve their goal. ITC researchers claim that they have even been in touch with ethereal beings, or angels, receiving their pictures and voices. Researcher Mark Macy, a member of INIT, has a device called a Luminator in his Colorado lab. He claims it creates a subtle energy field which seems to melt away some of the barriers between our physical world and the spirit worlds. When Macy takes pictures of people in the presence of the Luminator, allegedly, there are spirit faces posing very clearly with the human subjects. [7]

Skepticism Skeptics consider these communications to be hoaxes or due to liberal interpretations of natural phenomena. Scientists claim that it is too easy to misinterpret EVP recordings as random interference, called auditory pareidolia. They also claim that many of the visual allegations were the result of “matrixing”, the spontaneous perception of connections and meaningfulness in unrelated things.
