In his 1999 “Law of Accelerating Returns”, inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil proposed that technology would advance exponentially over the next decades so that human civilization could achieve in the first twenty years of the 21st century the equivalent of what had been achieved throughout the entire 20th century. While this is now, in retrospect, questionable, actual technological advancements since the 20th century have nevertheless brought about the question of whether artificial intelligence (AI) will eventually surpass human intelligence. Though AI is at the moment capable of sensing, recognizing, and creating, it has yet to attain autonomy. The impression remains however that we are on the cusp of a technological explosion, and that what happens in the next few decades could potentially threaten the existence of humanity. Our species’ fear of the unknown and uncontrollable ignites a profound curiosity in Vvzela Kook, leading her to imagine a future where humanity and AI coexist.
I. D u a l M e t r o p oli t a n s
Kook’s science fiction series Confidential Records, ongoing since 2016, originates in her extensive research into the history of Kowloon Walled City, an ungoverned, densely populated enclave in Hong Kong, whose history between WWII and its demolition in 1993 contributed to Hong Kong’s cyberpunk image. Taking into account the predictions made by the “Law of Accelerating Returns”, the premise of the series is the threat presented to humanity by AI, which has, at the moment described in the series, surpassed human intelligence. Inside the exhibition space, the audience is immersed in a futuristic cityscape constructed through 3D printing. In Dual Metropolitans, AI has taken over the world and the Kowloon Walled City, hidden underground, becomes humanity’s last line of defence. In Execution, the clash between humanity and AI reaches its climax. The AI authority rules through extreme, coercive ideological reforms. As a new iteration made for this exhibition, the artist manipulates the audience’s spatial and sensory perceptions through interactive installations and spatial design, placing the audience in the position to resist absolute subjugation. The work reflects a universal condition of individual resistance in dystopian societies, and the parallelisms and entanglements between different totalitarian regimes in the past, present, and future. In the quest for absolute order, efficiency and stability are prioritized above all else, and those without a stake in society will be eliminated, wherein “civilization is sterilization”.
The newly commissioned work for this exhibition, Overwrite, takes the form of a multimedia walk. Kook has been an avid reader of detective novels since she was young. Similar to a detective mystery, the walk is guided by an AI character that has defected to the side of humanity, taking the audience through a narrative out of the exhibition space into the streets nearby to pursue a series of clues that interrogate the ideological transformations enforced by the AI authority. The work explores the nature of memory, particularly the imminent danger of memory being used as data, as well as critiquing the ways authoritarianism erases memories and takes over historical narratives.
Confidential Records: Overwrite presents multilayered juxtapositions and tensions, the virtual and the real, the emotional and the rational, as well as the relationship between the individual and authoritarianism. These are both part of Kook’s imagination of the future, as well as reflections of our current times, forcing us to confront reality as it is and as it might become. Celia Ho

Article 8 According to the Sensory Perception WireTap Act, the Third Polar Industry has the responsibility to closely monitor the physical and psychological state of Pure Blood Humans, and can choose to intervene in a timely manner. Article 9 Pure Blood Humans have no right to harm their body, mind, and life. If a Pure Blood Human has lost brain or body functions, the Third Polar Industry has the right to end the life of the Pure Blood Human. Pure Blood Humans who encourage other Pure Blood Humans to commit suicide or provide assistance for this purpose are sentenced to life imprisonment or forced ideological reform. Article 10 Pure Blood Humans are obliged to provide memory backup to the Third Polar Industry when necessary, and are obliged to assist the Third Polar Industry to obtain the memories of other Pure Blood Humans when necessary. From the moment Antigone stepped into the restricted zone, faintly she felt an inescapable destiny, and little by little this destiny loomed out of the darkness. Every time the Ghost Army went into the battlefield, Antigone would look into the murky sky, her cyberbrain assisting her in locating the Ghost Army with real time evaluation. Casualties were rare, and even if there were any, they seldom fell into the living quarters of Pure Blood Humans. The wounded were not her biz, but whenever her cyberbrain detected a soldier with no sign of life but a complete brain, this owl of Underground Kowloon Walled City would intervene. Backup memory, delete memory, overwrite memory. All the details were fatal. The memories did not belong to the Third Polar, nor shall they ever be theirs.

If you want more capacity or other functions, just configure it as needed. Broken? Get it fixed--it could only be better than before, promised. (b.1990, 生活工作於香港 )
新媒體藝術家曲淵澈,主要以聲音視覺作為創作媒介 , 包括聲音視覺 現場演出、劇場、電腦動畫與繪畫。她的作品結合現場演出,探索與當代 表演類型,如舞蹈、編舞與計算機生成藝術之間共存的可能性。她的視覺 作品結合了技術與她的藝術實踐,以再現和轉換城市景觀為一個集成的虛 擬體驗,引導觀眾在符控流域旅行。作品當中的多重的紋理與我們感知的 多個感官相連,重新介紹視頻作為一種媒介的潛力。她的作品注重敘事性, 跨媒介的敘事手法是藝術家表達觀念的重要方式。尤其是混合出現的圖紙, 3D 打印物件與計算機遊戲美學的視頻作品,顯示了藝術家運用的多種媒介 與材料來視覺化她的研究型作品。
她的作品曾經展出於香港 Para Site (2020)、空總當代文化試驗場 (2019, 台北當代藝術館 )、亞洲協會香港中心 (2019)、香港大館 (2019)、 香港微波國際新媒體藝術節 (2018、2016)、溫哥華 PuSh 表演藝術節 (2017)、六廠紡織文化藝術館 (2017)、香港藝術節 (2015), 中國聲音藝 術大展 (2013)、德國 Friszchelle 藝術節、杜塞爾多夫藝術節 (2012) 以及 Hans Ulrich Obrist 與 Simon Castets 共同策劃的「89+」計劃 (2012)。 vvzela.co
