Age smart... PARC SMART

Dorothy, card shark Summerhill PARC

Healthy aging doesn’t come without some conscious effort towards a healthy diet. The good news? At PARC Retirement Living, we take care of all that for you. Our highly skilled onsite chef considers it his job to ensure every resident is enjoying a healthy well-balanced, nutritious and delicious menu of foods each and every day. In addition, we offer PARC SMART entrées, which are: >

low in sodium

> low in fat/saturated fat

> low in concentrated sugars > portion-controlled

It’s all part of our Independent Living+ program, where our focus is to provide residents with maximum opportunity to age actively and maintain their health and wellness. Take this PARC SMART smoothie for example. The kale and spinach are packed with phytochemicals, natural cancer cell inhibitors.

Life’s better here “I’ve never been so busy in my entire life,” says Dorothy. This upbeat resident at Summerhill PARC never seems to stop smiling. It’s no wonder. She is always on the go. Considering she only just moved in to Summerhill PARC six months ago, Dorothy has made impressive inroads into the social network, fitness regime and activities that keep her humming along.

GREEN POWER SMOOTHIE

Dorothy says she’s never felt so energized. “I attend exercise classes three times a week, join the bus excursions, I play BINGO and go to the casino,” she smiles. “Before moving in here, I was alone. Now I’m with people all the time. You don’t have to ever be alone here, if you don’t wish.”

Makes 4 servings (8oz) > 1/2 cup (125 mL) low-fat vanilla yogurt > 1 cup (250 mL) water > 1 cup (250 mL) ice cubes > 1 medium banana > 1 cup (250 mL) diced pineapple > 1 cup (250 mL) chopped fresh spinach, lightly packed > 1 cup (250 mL) chopped fresh kale, lightly packed Agave nectar, honey or maple syrup to taste (optional) PREPARATION: In blender, combine yogurt, water, ice, banana, pineapple, spinach, kale and agave nectar honey or syrup. Blend on high until smooth. Pour into glasses and serve. Makes 4 servings.

Dorothy relishes the socializing she’s able to do during her onceor twice-weekly afternoon card games. She joins with two other Summerhill PARC residents who happen to be sisters to play a form of Rummy for nickels. They rotate hosting amongst the three of them. “There’s simply no time to think about feeling bad or lonely here.” Even in-suite, she has Fifi, her feline companion—a docile jet-black ball of fur. She loves the fact that she can have her hair styled at the onsite salon Saturday mornings or indulge in a massage while the housekeeper cleans her suite. As she so rightly points out, “I have no responsibilities. Life is great!” That’s how it is at Summerhill PARC: residents get involved. They stay active. And pursue passions. They eat healthier and laugh more. And with PARC’s focus on maintaining a healthy body and mind through our Independent Living+ program, it’s easy to see how life’s just better here. PARC Retirement Living welcomes adults 65+.
