Few people will dispute the immense benefits that the habit of reading brings in its wake. Even in a world inundated with technology, TV and video games, reading manages to hold its own. What does it matter whether your fingers turn pages or glide across a Kindle, as long as you’re reading? And everyone who matters – experts, teachers, parents and students – are united in the belief that the habit of reading is one that has to be inculcated early on in a child.

some questions – What is the place of the mother tongue? When the father and mother have different mother tongues, is it not better to use English as the common language? What to keep in mind Dr. Ali Khwaja is the Founder of Banjara Academy, a unique institution committed to improving the quality of life. He writes books and columns, and is regularly invited to conduct workshops and lectures at prestigious national institutions, schools, and colleges.

Students transition more or less seamlessly from one grade to another from first to tenth and seem to reach a crossroads of sorts after Grade 10. This is because, they need to make a choice for the first time in their academic lives.,A few who are not at all academically oriented, or cannot afford higher education, move on to diplomas, ITI courses or other job-oriented training, while the others opt for higher studies through schools or colleges (pre-university courses).

At this juncture, the student has to select the Board to study in, and the combination of three or four optional subjects along with one or two languages.,Most alternatives lie in one of the three categories: Science, Commerce or Arts. A few schools and colleges offer unusual combinations across the three categories (a mix of commerce and arts subjects, for example) such as Home Science + Psychology + Sociology, or Computer

Science + Commerce subjects.,In a few selected institutions, courses are offered in design, environmental sciences, physical education, and so on. Most schools and colleges, on the other hand, have clearly defined streams – Science, Commerce, Arts. Except in the case of ISC, CBSE and NIOS (or if a student has obtained exemption due to learning disability), in other words, in all State Boards, a student has to study another language along with English.,While the most common choices offered are the respective State languages, Hindi and Sanskrit, some schools/pre-university colleges do offer French and other foreign languages.,
