How to Breastfeed Like a Boss By Anjelica Malone
T
he joys and benefits of breastfeeding are celebrated openly, but we rarely talk about the many hurdles that can arise and make breastfeeding difficult. As a lactation educator, counselor and birth worker who’s supported families around the globe, I’ve found that there are a series of steps that every woman can begin implementing during pregnancy and after birth to greatly increase the chances of having a successful breastfeeding experience. Here are a few of them: Write down your breastfeeding goals. Instead of solely focusing on the recommendations made by your healthcare provider, friends or family, take a moment and think about what milestones you’d like to reach in your breastfeeding journey. Doing so allows you to objectively consider why you are breastfeeding and prepare for the help you’ll need to reach each stage. Assemble your breastfeeding tribe. Your tribe should consist of your medical provider, your partner or a close friend, and a coworker. Each of these people will play an important role in helping you successfully start breastfeeding after birth, during the “golden hour” (the first hour after birth when a mother has uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact with her newborn); maintain breastfeeding once home; and access help should you begin to experience any breast/nipple trauma or if your baby struggles to gain weight. Your coworker will be someone who supports you in achieving your breastfeeding goals if you decide to return to work. Attend a prenatal breastfeeding class. Breastfeeding seems like it should be quite intuitive, but it doesn’t come naturally to most women. It can also be the most difficult during the first few weeks; this period of time is also the most crucial in establishing a healthy milk supply. A breastfeeding class will teach you the warning signs of a problem before it’s too late, while also educating you on how to know if your baby is getting enough nourishment. I recommend that a friend or partner attend the class with you. They’re likely to remember things that are hard to recall once you’re in the 4
thick of the postpartum period, and they will be equipped with information on available resources if you require them. Meet with a lactation professional. Questions about spitting up, diapers and feeding usually require a simple answer and not necessarily a full lactation consultation, which would require showering, getting dressed and leaving the house with a newborn. Meeting with a lactation professional before giving birth allows you to ring up your consultant for advice on the fly. You can find lactation professionals by attending a La Leche League (llli.org) meeting or other local breastfeeding meet-up, calling your hospital’s lactation services department or reaching out to a doula for a list of recommended professionals. Prioritize self-care. I’ve heard many mothers share their experiences of feeling trapped by breastfeeding at first, since they are their baby’s sole source of nourishment. Ease this feeling by taking walks, scheduling a massage or attending a yoga class a few times a week. 10 Surefire Sleep Strategies for Slumber-Starved New Parents By Malia Jacobson
T
he one piece of sleep advice that will serve you best throughout your years as a parent is this: Give your child the sleep support he needs, and no more. It’s that simple. Respond to his needs compassionately, and learn when to step back, because, really, he’s got this. This “line” is tricky to find, and it shifts: Your child may need you more at certain times, less at others. But once you figure out this essential balance, you’ll become your own sleep expert, supporting your child’s needs with compassion and wisdom for the rest of your parenting journey. Here are few tips to help you “prime” your child for healthy rest and increase his natural drive for sleep.
Support your child’s circadian rhythm. Forget the old “never wake a sleeping child” adage — embrace your role as your child’s guide to a regular sleep cycle. It’s perfectly appropriate to wake a child when she is sleeping at an inappropriate time — e.g., sleeping past normal wake-up time in the morning or napping too long or too late in the afternoon — to protect her healthy sleep routine. Keep a sleep log. Tracking your child’s sleep is the best way to detect patterns that will help you identify the root causes of any sleep troubles. For tips on keeping a simple log, visit parentmap.com/sleeplog. Rise and shine. Preparation for a good bedtime begins first thing in the morning: At least 15 minutes of strong morning light exposure combined with a morning meal tells your child’s brain that it’s time to wake up, and also helps them feel sleepy come bedtime. Maximize melatonin. Darkness is a powerful cue regulating the body’s biorhythms and a potent sleep aid for children, as it triggers the brain’s natural production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep–wake cycles. Dim the lights an hour or so before the time you’d like your child to be in bed. Black out the bedroom. Nighttime light exposure interferes with the body’s production of 6
melatonin. Every sleep doctor I’ve ever interviewed has said the same thing: Bedrooms should be completely dark — the darker, the better. So, douse those cute nightlights — they are not necessary for babies and can even be harmful to sleep quality. Create a quiet sleeping space. Add a pure, high-quality white noise to create a constant screen of background sound that makes sudden noises less detectable, and therefore less likely to rouse your little sleeper. Monitor room temperature. Temperature is an important physiological cue that promotes sleep. When your child or the bedroom is too warm, this natural process is interrupted. Doctors say the ideal bedroom temperature is between 60 and 68 degrees. Fuzzy-wuzzy is no more. It’s a myth that babies sleep best on soft, fuzzy surfaces. Fleece sheets, flannel sheets and sheepskins trap heat, which can lead to an uncomfortably warm sleep environment. Opt instead for simple cotton sheets to keep things cool. Move that body! Physical activity promotes deep, restful sleep and is important for children of all ages, beginning at birth. For brand-new babies, this means ample time on their tummies and on their backs so they can look around, work their neck muscles and wiggle their arms and legs. Master the art of the nap. Naps help young children rest and process new information, support healthy development and promote restful sleep at night. They should be long enough to be restorative, but no longer. Avoid naps longer than two-and-a-half hours; and for babies taking multiple naps, one to one-and-a-half hours per nap may be plenty. 5 Steps to Choosing a Pediatrician for Your Child By Sarah Lyons
A
fter your baby is born, you will visit your pediatrician or family doc a lot. One study indicates that first-time parents may visit their child’s doctor up to 16 times before their baby’s first birthday. Thus, finding a care provider you trust is one of the most important early decisions you’ll make as a new parent, and it can be hard to know where to begin your search. Here are some tips to get you started.

Start with recommendations Poll friends and family members for recommendations, or throw out an ask on a Facebook neighborhood or parents group page. Be specific about the traits you’re looking for in a pediatrician or family doctor. Ask a professional! Whom does your OB/GYN trust to care for her children? Do your research First, narrow down your list to the top candidates within your insurance plan or coverage network, and then read the reviews of those doctors online. Check to see if the doctors you’re evaluating are certified by The American Board of Pediatrics (abp.org). If you choose a family doctor, verify that the doctor is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine (theabfm.org). (Family doctors are trained to treat patients of all ages, including children, but they don’t have a specialty in pediatrics.) Next, consider key convenience factors. What are the office hours? Do they have walk-in hours? What hospital will your child be admitted to, if needed? Is the office location close to your home, work, school and daycare? Visit the office Call the office and ask if they have times set up for potential patients to come and take a tour, and ask if you can interview the doctor at the same time. Be sure to inquire if there is a charge for visiting. If there is, verify with your insurance company to see if the cost would be covered or if you would be responsible for paying out of pocket. Pay attention to what the overall environment feels like. Is the staff courteous and helpful? The 24
Start by asking how sick appointments work. How long would it typically take for a sick child to be seen? Is there a good chance your child will be seen by his own doctor? New parents can be uncertain about or overwhelmed by the inundation of sometimes contradictory messages they receive about child-rearing. Be sure to raise your concerns and share your family’s values with respect to your child’s health care, be it vaccinations, breastfeeding, circumcision, co-sleeping or fill-in-the-blank. Understanding where your pediatrician stands on such issues can make all the difference in the care you receive. Consider bedside manner How the doctor interacts with you and your child should have a lot of bearing on your ultimate decision. Does your child seem comfortable around the doctor? Are you? Does the doctor seem willing to take the time to listen to your questions and concerns? The parents’ objective is the same as the pediatrician’s: supporting the growth of a happy and healthy child. efore you go wandering glassy-eyed through the aisles frantically filling your shopping cart in impending parenthood panic mode, check out our list of must-haves — curated from hardearned wisdom and on-the-job experience in the child-rearing trenches.

1. Car seat: Car seats are mandatory by federal law, and the hospital won’t allow you to take baby home without one. Nonprofit Safe Kids Worldwide (safekids.org) is a tremendously valuable resource for tips on buying and installing a proper car seat for your child at every age and stage.
8. Co-sleeper or bassinet: Most newborns start out sleeping somewhere near mom. Co-sleepers attach securely to the parental bed and have a padded drop-side for easy transfer of baby back to his own sleep space after feeding. A bassinet can be a convenient and portable solution for the first few months.
2. Soft carrier: When you can’t put your newborn down but want to move around with your hands free, soft carriers are lifesavers. Styles range from sling to wrap to front-to-back convertible, so talk to a friend, try a few out (keep your receipts)!

Sleep soothers: Here are my three top recommendations for helping your newborn — and you! — get some rest: Watch the “Happiest Baby on the Block” DVD (or read the book) to learn invaluable baby-calming skills; have several pacifiers on hand; and invest in at least two swaddlers to keep baby wrapped up snugly.
3. Stroller: If you’ve already chosen your primary stroller, see if it has an adapter available for your baby car seat model. Otherwise, look for frame strollers, which are exactly what they sound like: a frame with wheels that you can snap your infant car seat into — done and done. 4. Diaper bag: The best diaper bags feature waterproof/microfiber surfaces, offer plenty of pockets for storage, can be slung cross-body or sport backpack straps, and come in designs that all caregivers will want to be seen using. 5. Nursing essentials: If you’re breastfeeding, a trusty nursing pillow is a must for keeping baby in the optimal position, and mom should have at least two good nursing bras or tank tops in rotation, plus nursing pads so she doesn’t leak through her shirts. 6. Bottles and formula: Recommendations vary on when to introduce a bottle, but you may need one sooner than you think. Options include glass or BPA-free plastic bottles, breast-mimicking or classic-style nipples, gas-reducing venting technology and more. If you’re supplementing or planning to formula-feed, you can choose be36
7. “Burp” cloths: This goes without saying, but there is a lot of spit-up in your future. Keep at least 15–20 burp cloths on hand that are washed and ready for duty.

Reference book: If there were ever an instruction manual that should come with babies, “Baby 411” (now in its eighth edition) gets my vote. Authors Denise and Alan Fields team up with pediatricians and other specialists to regularly update this comprehensive, straight-talking, easy-to-navigate reference about caring for babies ages 0–12 months. 12. Embracing Children of Diverse Abilities and Their Families Kindering embraces children of diverse abilities and their families by providing the finest education and therapies to nurture hope, courage, and the skills to soar. Eighty-five percent of brain development happens by age 3, the crucial window for providing children with early education and developmental therapies. We serve children with developmental delays and disabilities, as well as those with risk factors, including homelessness, immigrant/refugee status, youth in foster care and non-English speaking families. Kindering offers a comprehensive menu of services, including developmental evaluations, physical, speech, behavioral, feeding and infant mental health therapies, provided regardless of a family’s ability to pay.
