9 Benefits for Teens Who Attend Camp Learning, leadership, teamwork and developing new friendships are just some of the many benefits of teen camps By Kerrie McLoughlin Many of us parents think of camp as a place to send our elementary-age kids so they aren’t sitting around the house bored all summer; we also know our kiddos will make friends, learn new things, have fun and make memories at camp. But as kids grow older, we sometimes forget that they still need those kinds of experiences — just in a different form. Maybe you don’t think your teen needs summer camp. Your teen should be babysitting, mowing lawns, working at the pool or hanging around with friends, right? Well, sure! But why not send them off for a week or more of summer fun and learning this year? Here are nine great benefits teens experience when they attend summer camp:

1. Learning how to give back Community service camps offer a great chance for teens to make a difference while also developing skills that will carry them through their lives. Maybe your teen will learn how to pack food for the homeless, teach kids how to read or work on a project that will benefit the community, such as cleaning up a playground or fixing equipment. They could even learn how to paint a house, maintain a yard for an elderly person who is unable to do so anymore, or even learn how to plan and build a house for a family in need.

2. Making new friends Some teens attend the same camp or camps every summer and might reunite with the friends they’ve made there, year after year. Campers who are attending for the very first time can hone their social skills by making new friends and getting to know other kids outside of their typical school setting. Being in close proximity for days or weeks helps kids get closer, faster.

3. Learning new things Whether your teen attends a camp to learn more about horses, adventure, a specific sport or anything else, they have an entire day, week or longer to focus on that one activity and really immerse themselves in it. Your teen might discover a new passion that could be helpful in their education or work life later on.

4. Deepening their faith If your teen enjoys church youth groups and activities, a church or other organized religious camp could just be the ticket. The day might begin with a church service, followed by breakfast, then a hike and other activities. Later, there could be singing songs around a bonfire while roasting s’mores.

5. Developing a hobby When your child is unplugged from the TV, video game console or smartphone, they can really concentrate on developing a hobby. These days, there seems to be a camp for pretty much any interest your kid has.

6. Working as a team Your teen will be meeting kids and counselors of different ages and from different backgrounds. Learning how to get along and work as a team is a huge life skill that is developed and reinforced at camp. Some camps even have kids do team- and trust-building activities to help them get to know each other.

7. Staying active Forget sitting around absorbed in “screen time” all day long during the summer! When teens attend camp, they often forget all about tech amusements and focus on having fun with their friends while going on hikes, boating, swimming and more.

8. Standing on their own Let’s face it: As our kids get older, they start to grow away from us. They are simply preparing to head out on their own and they are also preparing you for that transition by perhaps being a little distant. Teens are stuck between childhood and adulthood, and it’s a confusing time. Going away to camp for even a short period of time helps foster independence.

9. Appreciating everything Away from screens (yes, I keep fixating on this one), it’s easier to focus on nature, learning, forming relationships and more. After being away from home and their parents, kids often return with a newfound appreciation for what it takes to be in a family and help out in the running of the household. Your teen will probably come back also appreciating things they once took for granted, such as a full pantry that’s open all day, their comfy bed and privacy! Teen summer camp has so many benefits that cover all the bases — physical, social, mental and spiritual. As for the rest of the summer? Well, your teen can spend plenty of time doing those odd jobs to help pay for camp next year! Kerrie McLoughlin, her husband and their five kids thrive in the controlled chaos that is their home. Read all about it at TheKerrieShow.com.

Unique Online Activities to Keep the Kids Busy This Summer They can try parkour, learn how to be a CIA spy, get cooking in the kitchen and more By Tiffany Doerr Guerzon With summer break almost upon us, we’re going to need a few fun activities in our back pockets to keep the kids busy (and out of our hair). There are tons of virtual classes and camps available online, but it can be hard to know which ones are actually fun for kids. To help you out, we’ve rounded up the best online activities for kids that are fun, semi-educational and most of which are free or lowcost. Kids can try parkour, learn how to be a CIA spy, get cooking in the kitchen or grow their own butterflies. We think this list has something for every kid to power a summer of learning.

1. Get moving! Join Curt, aka Chief Head Monkey, from Kong Academy for video instruction of parkour-style movement exercises ranging from mimicking animal movements on the floor to vaulting off furniture. Tip for parents: Before diving in, check out the videos to see what you are comfortable with your kids doing in the house! You can also find Chief Head Monkey on YouTube. Cosmic Kids Yoga, a free kids’ yoga channel on YouTube, is a must for wiggly kids. They can join Jaime for yoga, mindfulness and relaxation techniques. Kid-favorite characters from “Trolls,” Minecraft and Pokémon are frequently incorporated into the classes. The Body Coach TV channel on YouTube presents PE With Joe, a series of free and fun fitness classes for kids. Exuberant and entertaining, Joe will have your kids jumping around in no time.

2. Learn an awesome new skill. Learn how to be a CIA spy! Delve into lessons, games and “briefings” on topics such as codebreaking and spy history. Meet the CIA spy dogs and discover what actually happens at the Central Intelligence Agency. All lesson plans are free and suitable for kids in grades 5–12. Discover what it’s like to work at NASA. Explore the International Space Station, build and test a spacecraft, and find lots of other STEM activities for kids in grades K–4.

3. Play with clay. Follow Miniez Shop on YouTube for fun instructional videos that demonstrate how to sculpt miniature objects. Elizabeth Zosel Kramer uses Sculpey clay, which is available on Amazon. Other oven-dry polymer clays will work, too. You don’t need a kiln to dry the clay, just your oven, and your kids’

creations can be painted after they dry completely. Even better: Regular household objects can be employed as sculpting tools. Check out more project ideas on the Sculpey website.Kiddos can sculpt animals, jewelry, badges and more with Sago Brothers air-dry modeling clay. This air-dry clay is suitable for children as young as 3 and doesn’t require an oven to set it. Check out lots of different project ideas on the Sago Clay YouTube channel. Have the kids make their own clay! Visit the Mama.Papa.Bubba website for an excellent tutorial on making baking soda clay from basic kitchen ingredients.

4. Get STEMmy! Watch a caterpillar grow and set a butterfly free with a butterfly STEM set, which includes five baby caterpillars, food, a mesh habitat, a butterfly feeder and learning activities. These at-home butterfly kits may even turn your science-hating kid into a budding biologist. Pacific Science Center’s Curiosity at Home program shares new content regularly through its website and Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages. Look for live streaming science shows, take advantage of ask-the-expert opportunities, and find suggested activities and experiments for kids of all ages that they can do at home. Check back often for new content to inspire learners of all ages.

5. Get creative! Bellevue Arts Museum produces an excellent series of fun, free craft videos for young kids. All the projects require some basic arts and crafts supplies, which you probably already have on hand. Create binoculars, suncatchers, fish crafts and more. Bored with board and video games? Go old school with a deck of playing cards. Hearts? Garbage? Rummy? Good ol’ War? In case you’ve forgotten how to play, visit Pagat.com to relearn rules for all kinds of card games.

6. Get cooking! The Kidstir subscription service gives you all the inspiration you need to get cooking with the kids. Each kit includes themed recipes and activities, and is recommended for kids ages 4–14. Raddish Kids’ subscription service is described as “a cooking club, culinary lesson and mealtime solution all-in-one.” Suitable for kids ages 4–14, each kit contains recipe guides, a kitchen tool, culinary skill lessons, a grocery list and some collectibles. Bonus: Raddish Kids also offers a Spotify playlist to provide a soundtrack for various activities. Engage kids with fun experiments they can do with ingredients you probably have in your pantry by taking lessons from The Kitchen Pantry Scientist. Click on a lesson for written directions or watch demos on YouTube.

7. Make a new (old-school) friend. The time-out-of-time experience of the pandemic provides the perfect excuse to slow down and introduce the kids to the ancient art of letter writing. A pen pal? What a concept! Collecting postcards from all over the world makes for an entertaining new hobby, too. With the Postcrossing service, each time you send a postcard, you will receive one from a randomly selected person from somewhere in the world. You can register and then post on the site about what you received.

8. Soak up the arts. The Playbill site offers Broadway productions that you can watch from home. These are available on a variety of services, including Broadway HD, Amazon Prime and YouTube, to name a few. From “Rent” to “Sweeney Todd,” here is your chance to share great shows with the kids at zero cost. Tour the world’s museums! Google Arts & Culture includes some 500 museums and galleries from around the globe that you can view from your computer. Some offer virtual tours, others present images of different art pieces. As a starting point, begin with 10 famous museums. Tiffany Doerr Guerzon is a freelance writer, the mother of three children and author of “Save Money on Groceries by Going Back to Basics.”
