About NWAIS
The Northwest Association of Independent Schools (NWAIS; nwais.org) is a nonprofit membership association that provides accreditation, professional development and support services to the 115 schools in Alaska, British Columbia, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
THE NWAIS VISION
NWAIS shapes the future of education by fostering transformative school leadership and by advancing, energizing and sustaining regional independent schools.
CORE VALUES
As the association of schools works together to advance the NWAIS mission, it is guided by core values. These essential principles enrich our relationships, guide our professional development programs, shape our member services and inform our process for school accreditation.
Healthy, Just, Diverse, and Inclusive Communities
NWAIS understands that schools are more than institutions. Our schools are also communities that extend beyond traditional boundaries, and include students and families of many types, backgrounds and ethnicities. NWAIS schools are good citizens in their actual neighborhoods, and often, active members of virtual, global networks of schools. Collaboration, collegiality, acknowledgement of their interconnectedness, and regard for the search for knowledge and understanding characterize our schools, both inside their classrooms and beyond their walls. Whatever their size, type, philosophy and program, NWAIS schools are committed to creating and enhancing environments for their students and staff that are safe, equitable, diverse and welcoming.
Continuous Improvement
NWAIS values inquiry, innovation and a dedication to continuous improvement as essential to school success. The association views ongoing professional development as necessary for progress, and, accordingly, offers members a rich
program of workshops and conferences each year. Similarly, the association offers formal and informal consulting to facilitate school change and growth. NWAIS holds that nothing is more important to a school’s sustained improvement than the process of accreditation. NWAIS believes that there is no agent more powerful than accreditation for helping schools advance to their next level of excellence.
Transformative, Visionary Leadership
NWAIS actively promotes the strengthening of current school leadership and the development of future school leadership based on the conviction that good schools can become great schools when guided by skilled, ethical and visionary leaders. Furthermore, the association believes that, with coaching and training, good leaders can become great, and great leaders can become transformative, manifesting a compelling vision for their school that engages and inspires the entire community. Consequently, the association is committed to providing opportunities for the growth and development of current and potential school leaders — from board chairs and heads, to program directors, department chairs, business officers and teachers — wherever they may be on their career path.
The Positive Impact of Independent School Education
NWAIS celebrates the time-tested independent school commitment to educating the whole child through intentional programs based upon strong scholastic, civic, moral and ethical values. The association champions the unique experience and distinctive culture that every independent school offers as fundamental to student and school success. Through
professional development programs and the process of accreditation, NWAIS provides practical support to its member schools as they strive to unleash student potential through exceptional teaching and extraordinary learning opportunities. The association advances independent school education by encouraging schools, in ways appropriate to their missions, to experiment and innovate in program and pedagogy so their students can become life-long learners and successful citizens who contribute to the common good.
OUR EXPECTATIONS OF MEMBER SCHOOLS AND AFFILIATES
• Commitment to the Public Good
• Effective Governance and Operations
• Primary Focus of Academic Education
• Commitment to the Best Interests of Children
OUR COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY
NWAIS schools are expected to maintain communities that are safe and supportive for all their members. Accordingly, all schools in the association shall create and foster a program, culture, and inclusive community of students, families, trustees, faculty and staff who embrace diverse perspectives, cultures, backgrounds and identities. Schools may demonstrate their Commitment to Care in a variety of ways, including, for example, but not limited to: curricular study, extracurricular programming, articulated institutional policies, a statement of non-discrimination that includes sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes, and traditions and practices that affirm the school as a healthy, respectful, welcoming environment for all.
ESSENTIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF NWAIS SCHOOLS
In order to assist schools in fulfilling their commitment to providing children a highquality educational experience, we believe
that schools that are mission-appropriate for the association support the mission and core values of the association and abide by the following essential characteristics of NWAIS schools.
Commitment to the Public Good
As nonprofit organizations under the IRS code 501(c)(3), NWAIS schools must provide for the public good. We expect schools to accomplish this by offering an independent educational option for a wide variety of families and by giving back to the community through service, economic development, organizational citizenship, and providing models of quality organizations, curriculum and instruction.
Effective Governance and Operations
Success of NWAIS schools is secured through governance structures that provide fiduciary responsibility and strategic oversight, the goal of which is long-term viability. These structures work in partnership with an administrative structure that effectively manages the daily operation of the organization, ensuring the sustainability of the school for faculty, staff and families.
Primary Focus of Academic Education
NWAIS only accredits schools whose primary focus is academic education. In addition, the association only accredits schools in their entirety; it does not accredit parts of school programs. The mission, philosophy and goals of our schools articulate a commitment to academic preparation; ensuring students are inspired toward and prepared for subsequent educational opportunities. This requires NWAIS schools to create relevant and current curricula, with pedagogies based on present understanding of learning. NWAIS does not accredit schools with a primary focus that is therapeutic, wilderness-based or athletic. NWAIS schools prepare students for pursuit of future educational opportunities.

Commitment to the Best Interests of Children
NWAIS schools demonstrate an ongoing commitment to the best interests of the students and families they serve. This includes commitments to the long term sustainability of the school; providing the continuity of educational experience through to the graduation of the child; promoting a safe and inclusive community; adequate resources for advising and counseling of students at their developmental age; and comprehensive programming for residential programs in schools that have them.
NWAIS Non-discrimination Statement for Affiliated Schools
Member schools do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, disability, national or ethnic origin, or other legally protected status in admis-
sion of otherwise qualified students or in providing access to the rights, privileges, programs, or activities generally available to all students and their families, including educational policies, scholarship and other financial aid programs, or athletic, extra-curricular, and other schooladministered programs and activities. Similarly, member schools do not discriminate in their hiring or employment practices on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, disability, national or ethnic origin, or other legally protected status. Single sex institutions, religious schools, or institutions serving students with learning differences or other special needs implement policies related to gender, religion, and learning differences or other special needs as appropriate to support their published mission statements. ■

Our primary educational focus is hands-on learning through intrinsic motivation and constructivist teaching. We offer a robust academic program, while encouraging collaboration, play, autonomy, and civil discourse. In place of grading and testing, we foster the social and academic growth of the individual learner, and provide them with a narrative of their development.
Our learners are seen as whole people capable of exploring their interests, advocating for their needs, and responsible for shaping their education, future, and community. They embody our mission to nurture in all children a sense of self, a passion for learning, community, and childhood.

The daily experience at Bertschi School is a celebration of childhood. For over forty years, our mission has called us to prepare compassionate, confident, and creative learners in a global community. Bertschi kids are taught to be curious, enthusiastic, cooperative, and open to new ideas.
We support our students fully in their academic and social emotional development. Our curriculum features comprehensive academics—but it’s how we do it that makes us different. Students work in fluid and varied groups to learn and practice skills at their “just right” level. They also learn by exploring real-life situations, engaging in meaningful handson activities, and through interdisciplinary, cross-curricular projects.
At Bertschi we live our values of integrity, inclusiveness, respect, and diversity every day. We believe children learn best when they are safe and known in a community that values their perspectives.

FISW students learn in both French and English and acquire the different thought processes unique to each language. As a result, they develop different ways to think, to process concepts, and to approach problems.

That tradition teaches us to ask complex questions, engage in vigorous and respectful debate, reflect on ourselves and our roles in the world, and take ethical action to make a positive difference. Seattle Academy (SAAS) is a vibrant, innovative and energetic independent school serving students 6th through 12th grade in an urban Capitol Hill campus in Seattle. Our dynamic educational approach of teaching students “how to think” but not “what to think” is delivered through programmatic pillars of Academics, Arts, Athletics, Outdoor & Travel, and Service.
SAAS combines a demanding curriculum with performing and visual arts, cuttingedge technology, and championship sports teams. We offer programs and activities that allow every student the opportunity to challenge themselves in new ways. Central to a SAAS education is our Culture of Performance where students demonstrate what they’ve learned in ways that go beyond the classroom. Mathematicians are poets; athletes are singers; scientists are debaters, and everyone takes educated risks.

At Seattle Country Day School, we know gifted children can be intense, verbal, and imaginative. They can have wildly different interests, from reading, to coding, to art. And they come from every community, every race, and every socioeconomic group.
At SCDS, your child will find a warm, welcoming classroom, one based around the concept of inquiry: a method where teachers encourage students to explore, ask questions, experiment, and create. In addition, our social-emotional learning program — which incorporates diversity, equity, and inclusion — helps students explore their identities and values while building empathy and understanding.
Together, these offerings bring out the best in our students, stoke their passion for learning, and help them develop critical-thinking skills that last a lifetime.

It’s rigorous (of course). Subjects are integrated (as in life). And it’s really fun.
We hear it often: St. Thomas School students stand out. They are distinguished by an uncommon maturity, a sense of responsibility, and self-discipline. Daily lessons on core virtues provide the foundation; daily opportunities to lead and collaborate let them turn their learning into action. Long after they leave our campus, our students are distinguished as much by the quality of their character as by the quality of their intellect.
For 70 years and 11,000 daily chapels we have collected our community’s children and taught them what it means to be global citizens. And we continue to serve families that believe leadership, character, and community are essential components of their child’s education.
