DE AR R E ADER

What is your family’s favorite summer tradition? SUMMER CAMPS + ACTIVITIES GUIDE 2022

Ready … set … summer! Some of our most indelible memories of childhood — and of parenting — trace back to summer camp experiences. I am convinced that this is the case because camp providers and counselors are magical people who truly believe in the inherent creativity, uniqueness and competency of children. Perhaps I also think this because my own mother was the best camp counselor of all time (and she pretty much has taught me everything of any value that I know).

Weirdly, she reminded me of an experience I had at a sleepaway camp, one I recounted in what she remembers as an unintentionally side-splitting letter I sent home (she is almost 87 — how does she remember this?). My random-lottery tentmate and I were assigned a pitching spot dangerously adjacent to a rotting log (what could go wrong, right?). Within hours of establishing our temp home-away-from-home, we returned after some awkward introductory activity to discover that a bazillion industrious red ants had decided to reestablish their nesting grounds in our bedding and luggage.

SENIOR ADVERTISING AND PARTNERSHIPS MANAGER Ida Wicklund

I asked my own kids to reflect upon their own multifarious camp experiences. My brilliant and artsy daughter Matilda (who recently turned 21!) immediately invoked memories of her favorite NeoArtSchool camps at the Meridian School in Seattle’s Wallingford neighborhood, led by head teacher Linda. This is what she said: “The projects were really cool. Linda would always tell a lot of stories while everyone was working — like she would tell us about the history of the building, also about how colors evoke certain images and emotions.” And, to bring it full circle: “I also remember her telling all of us multiple times that the best way to prevent lice is to use tea tree oil.” Job done.

Right for Your Child?

OUT + ABOUT EDITOR Nancy Chaney

As a registered nurse and Girl Scouts leader for decades, my mom knew a thing or 10,000 about teaching practical skills to kids, from basic first aid to tying cunning knots, to cooking the perfect campfire s’more. I asked her if she had any particular memories of summer camp, either from her own childhood, her decades of Girl Scouts leadership in the town where I grew up, or from my own childhood.

Despite the horror, you know what made it all fine in the end? The kindliest counselor who helped us pick out all of the eggs from our personal belongings and just get on with it. After that rocky start, I overcame my shyness to discover that I could sing pretty well, make people laugh, macramé like the devil, swim like a fish. Camp inspires such simple but important self-discoveries in all kids.
