Mrs Claus clinches it!

THE new Marks & Spencer Christmas commercial featuring Mother Christmas has been voted the favourite for 2016 by the nation’s mums. The annual poll from parenting site ChannelMum. com found over a third more mums rated the ad as their favourite than previous winner John Lewis, with 37 per cent to 24 per cent favouring the high street favourite’s spectacular polar adventure. The results - which were compiled just six hours after final major retailer Sainsbury’s

released its festive offering - revealed Aldi’s Kevin the Carrot took 18 per cent of the vote for best-loved Xmas ad, followed by nine per cent for Sainsbury’s, four per cent for Waitrose and three per cent for catalogue firm Very. (See full top ten below). M&S was also crowned the most effective Xmas ad, with 40 per cent of mums saying they are more likely to shop with the store as a result of seeing the commercial. M&S were almost neck and neck with last year’s most effective winner Aldi, with 38 per cent

of mums agreeing they’d be more likely to shop with the discounter after viewing its fun-filled festive jaunt. However, just 22 per cent will switch to John Lewis despite the £7m cost of Buster the Boxer extravaganza. Indeed, nine in ten of the 1,546 mums polled said they thought the £7m spend was ‘excessive’ with 46 per cent claiming it has turned them off shopping there. A further 17 per cent will switch to Sainsbury’s and 14 per cent to Asda after watching their ads. But John Lewis remained

the kids’ clear favourite, with 54 per cent of children voting for it, followed by 19 per cent for Aldi’s Kevin the Carrot and nine per cent for Argos’ Yetis. Overall, a whopping 60 per cent of mums admit to crying at Christmas ads. This year, the biggest tearjerker was M&S again, with 54 per cent of mothers weeping after watching it. A quarter sobbed at the John Lewis ad, 12 per cent at Sainsbury’s and nine per cent at the Waitrose robin. M&S was also voted the most ‘Christmassy’ ad overall by 56 per cent of mums quizzed. And mums revealed their wish-list for the perfect festive ad: ✸ Families together enjoying themselves - 81% ✸ Snow and Christmas trees 52% ✸ Cosy house with a roaring fire - 45% ✸ Dash of humour - 43% ✸ Familiar Christmas music 40% However, only one per cent want celebs in Xmas ads and only three per cent like trend for cartoons, such as the Sainsbury’s hardworking dad Dave and Very’s secret gifting mum. Mums also didn’t take well to this year’s trend for producing short ‘snippet’ adverts showcasing products like Asda and Currys PC World - with just ten per cent saying they found them enjoyable or effective. And in a shock result retailers

should study, three times more want festive ads ‘with a festive feeling and without product information’ (37%) compared to only 12 per cent who want to see items on sale. But the nation’s mums also feel stores need to reflect real life better. Over half of mums want to see ‘less perfect, more real’ ads. Half complained the Xmas ads don’t recognise that many families are still struggling for money, while a third want to see more kids with disabilities featured, and a quarter asked for more ads about single parents. By contrast, only 15 per cent said they wanted more ads featuring religion or the true meaning of Christmas. The study also revealed over half of mums now watch the ads on Social Media or YouTube before the TV, up from a third in 2015. A further 71 per cent talk about the ads with their family and friends, two in five re-watch the Xmas ads on YouTube, a third talk about them on social media - while 14 per cent even post the ads to their own social profiles, and six per cent use retailers official hashtags. However, despite all the excitement around the Christmas commercials, two in five want the ads banned until December, while a further 40 per cent don’t want them to air until after Armistice Day. Research reveals small outdoor toys are the best buy for kids this Christmas

With Christmas fast approaching, many parents will be panicking as to which gifts to buy their little ones, but which toys are least likely to be abandoned come Boxing Day? Financial services provider 118 118 Money is helping ease parents’ panic with new research into the most cost effective toys to buy this Christmas. The YouGov study of 1,059 parents with children under 18 years old asked which toys parents bought their children last Christmas, how much they paid for these and how often their children have played with the toy since. 4 Parent Talk December 2016

Thankfully for cost-conscious parents, small outdoor toys, such as bats and balls and water pistols, came out as the most cost effective buys, with the mean spend on this toy group being £22.48 and average plays since last Christmas being 53, giving them an overall cost per play of 42 pence. Another toy group that proved cost effective was dolls and action figures, such as Barbies or Monster High, with a cost per play of 43 pence. These were closely followed by craft and learning toys, like Loom Bands and Play Doh, with a cost per play of 44 pence.

Topping the list of most popular toy purchases last Christmas were board games, including family favourite Pie Face, with more than a third of parents buying a board game for their children under 18 years old. However, board games also had one of the lowest cost efficiency scores, costing an average of £1.11 per play and only coming out of the cupboard on an average of 25 occasions since last Christmas. It also seems that spending bigger on toys may not always be a bad idea. Games Consoles garnered the biggest average spend of £220.68 last Christmas, however they also had an average of 170 plays over the past ten months, giving them a cost per play of £1.30 – not much more than smaller items such as board games or building toys. Of the parents surveyed, 16% said they feel under pressure from their children

Mark Burgess, Chief Operating Officer at 118 118 Money, said: “With Christmas just around the corner, many parents feel under pressure to buy their children the latest toys and gadgets, and with toy trends changing so frequently it can be difficult to keep up!

“Our research has shown that parents needn’t panic in the run up to Christmas and that, when you shop around for the best deal, the larger items such as Playstations or iPads can make for a better investment than the smaller ones.”

BOYS and girls from Somerset who are on Santa’s nice list will be able to greet him at a garden centre in the county this month. Santa will be taking up residence in his grotto at Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre in December and meeting lots of children. Andrew Pitman, Store Manager at the award-winning, family run garden centre at Monkton Heathfield near Taunton, said: “We’re thrilled that Father Christmas has decided to take up residence in our grotto and meet all the boys and girls from the area. “Visiting the big man himself is a magical experience for little ones. The visit will include a one on one chat with Santa and children will receive a present, a

colouring card and a sticker. “The grotto has a magical feel that all the children will enjoy. Families will also be able to take photos alongside our giant handmade gingerbread family in exchange for a donation to Children’s Hospice South West. “We’ll also have live animals on-site too that children can see including two micro pigs and two miniature Shetland pony foals.” Advance booking for the grotto is recommended and can be done via www. monktonelmgardencentre. co.uk. The dark winter days are filled with light and merriment at National Trust places in South Somerset On weekends this winter (26 November – 1 January, excluding 24 & 25 December), Montacute House and Garden can be enjoyed in all lights with a winter stroll around the garden and look around the Elizabethan house. Then, as dusk settles (3 – 7pm),

Montacute will gradually transform into a glittering beacon. The garden will be illuminated in atmospheric colours and tones, and the house will be glowing – lit like a lantern from within. After all, on wintry nights there is nothing more heartening than a lantern of light gleaming

though the darkness. Jolly mid-winter merriment will be in abundance at Barrington Court. From the last weekend in November and through the first three in December, the court house will be transformed and presented with a flavour of a 1920’s Lyle family Christmas. There is lots of fun and excitement to be had with music, games and Father Christmas will be tucked away in his snuggly study. He loves to chat and everyone who visits gets a present, although an appointment needs to be made with his elves first (£9/child). There is ample opportunity to get ahead with some Christmas shopping on Saturday 26 November after 3pm, with a special chance to stay and shop at the wonderful

artisan workshops. It is also the season for indulgence with delicious festive teas in the elegantly decorated tea room (£12/person; booking essential). Get set for the Santa Express! Take a magical journey on the West Somerset Railway this Christmas with one of our Specials. We have something for everyone. ‘Flying High’ Independent Santa Letter Company takes on Royal Mail and NSPCC Christmas is a year-round business for Santa, as dadof-two Jonathan Days has discovered. He’s not complaining though. His Santa letter business has delivered huge success. After only four years in the business, he and his elves are now seriously taking on the big boys at The Royal Mail and NSPCC, who have been delivering Santa letters for decades. Jonathan, aged 34, started Santa Letter Direct (www. santaletterdirect.co.uk), based in Draycott, Somerset, as a moonlighting operation while working full time in IT in Bristol. He’d bought a Santa letter for his daughter Phoebe, then ten months old, and thought it could be done so much better. Personalisation seemed to be the key and so Santa

Letter Direct became the first company to fully personalise replies as well as include a Christmas Day text service. Their unique approach has now made it the largest independent Santa Letter company in the UK with a phenomenal 260,000 Likes on Facebook and rapid growth. They expect to send more than 200,000 letters to children this year, up from 7,000 in 2013, their first year. The Post Office started replying to children who write to Santa in 1963 and today’s Royal Mail send out hundreds of thousands of replies but they lack the personal touch. “ We go so much further than Royal Mail who only offer a generic reply to a self-address, and warn families that Santa is not guaranteed to reply. So we ensure kids won’t be let down

by Santa,” says Jonathan. Santa Direct’s letter to kids can even say who has let Santa’s head elf know they’ve been “nice”, what present Santa is going to bring them, congratulate them on an achievement and mention a friend. "We also have an address - North Pole, PO Box 1245, Cheddar, BS27 9AS - so that kids can write, too. We receive hundreds of elaborately decorated letters to Santa every year,” he adds. Each letter from Santa is printed, posted in a festive envelope and delivered with a North Pole stamp. Parents can opt to add an activity pack that includes an activity sheet, a personalised Official Nice Certificate, “Santa please stop here” door hanger, festive finger puppets and Santa selfie

kit. The same child is sent a text from Santa from 8am on Christmas day. As befitting a Christmas business, Santa Letter Direct is a family affair. Jonathan’s elves include his wife Kelly who runs a wedding cake business from their home in Draycott, Somerset, Phoebe (now four) and one-year-old Molly. Both children appear in Santa Letter Direct online marketing and even Jonathan’s sister, Victoria, is involved. There’s no doubt that Jonathan’s online marketing experience has helped catapult the business to success. Santa Letter Direct were the first company to integrate a postal service for kids with a text message from Santa. Has Jonathan thought of taking the Santa Letter brand into different territory? “We

tried Easter Bunny letters but only got 500 people wanting the Easter Bunny to write to them. I think he prefers to stick to chocolate eggs," he says. "We've also been asked to produce an Adult Santa Letter, but that's not very family friendly so we've decided to give it a miss." Santa Letter Direct is focused on forever enhancing the family tradition of children

writing and receiving letters from Santa. Santa Letter Direct also has its sights of international expansion. “We are already posting letters around the world to countries such as Australia, Ireland and America, so it seems natural to set up bases in these territories. Contraindications: do not practice the breathwork if pregnant or you are menstruating and have pmt cramps Sit comfortably, either in a chair or cross-legged and allow the spine to be tall, shoulders relaxed and face soft. ✸ This breath is in through the nose out through the nose. ✸ As you breathe in, you want the belly to rise like a balloon ✸ The exhale is really active and has a good whoosh sound to it and the belly should draw back to the spine with a little speed and effort ✸ The rhythm is similar to a steam train gaining speed with a continuous flow to the breath. ✸ Start with 1 breath per second and continue for 10 breaths. Rest and then repeat. ✸ The effort and emphasis should always be on the exhalation and allow the inhale to arrive naturally after the exhale. You can also bring the arms into play to really boost the

energies in the system. Raise the arms up over the head. Stretch the fingers to the sky and on the exhalation bring the elbows into the ribcage with a little gusto. This will really help liven up the whole respiratory system. ✸ Inhale. Stretch the arms up over head ✸ Exhale: bring the elbows to the ribs allowing the elbows to liven up the ribs ✸ Repeat this movement for 10 breaths. Relax and repeat for up to 5 times ✸ Always seek the advice of a certified breath-worker before embarking on a prolonged breath practice. Deep breathing increases the supply of oxygen to your brain and stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes a

state of calmness. Breathing techniques help you feel connected to your body, bringing your awareness away from the worries in your head and quiets your mind.” 2. ‘Breath Deskercise’ from Uptight to Alright Great one to practice at the desk, midway through your working day. Sit comfortably in your chair rest your hands on your thighs and allow the spine to be tall (it sometimes helps to take the spine a little away from the support of your chair). To help release tension in the respiratory muscles in the shoulders and upper back: take a deep and slow inhalation through the nose and raise the shoulders to the ears. Exhale and let the shoulders go. Repeat 5-10 times and then rotate the shoulders slowly in a backward direction. Be mindful of how you sit at your desk. Make sure the shoulder blades are drawn down your back, the chest is lifted and allow space between the pelvis and the rib cage. A good posture can help you breathe easier. 3. ‘Sleep Deep 4-3-6 Breath’ – from Wired to Tired After a full on day, the system can often feel wired and winding down seems to be the last thing on the list. The breath can act as a perfect bridge from feeling in a heady state to connecting with a more peaceful state of mind. If comfortable, lie in bed on your belly, head to one side (one pillow, so not to crick the neck too much) and make sure the jaw is relaxed (allow there to be a small space between the upper and lower teeth). Hands either side of the hips, to allow the shoulders to unwind

and make sure the fingers are relaxed too. Close the eyes. Using a diaphragmatic breath whereby the belly rises on the inhalation – you should feel the belly create a dome shape, descending toward the mattress, breathe in through the nose for a count of 4. Hold the breath for a count of 3. Exhale through the mouth for a count of 6. Repeat this for 5 to 10 rounds and notice how the body relaxes on the exhalation. On each exhale imagine ‘letting go’ of the day. This should prepare you for a deep sleep. You can download the ‘sonic breath’ series at www.inspirationspace. co.uk to practise this breath counting technique. 4. ‘Good Calmer’ – from Panic to Zen, in under 10 This is a great breath work to help induce feelings of calm. It’s helped people overcome panic attacks and relaxed those who are stressed. Make sure you have practised deep belly breathing above before starting this breath work: 1. Begin with an exhale and then slowly fill your lungs with an inhale from the bottom to the top 2. Inflate your cheeks and purse your lips, as if blowing out through a straw, as you exhale through the mouth. Exhale for a count of 10 (repeating in your mind 1 – one thousand, 2 – two thousand and so on) 3. Begin again with a slow deep inhale through the nose and then exhale through the mouth as in step 2. 4. Repeat between 3 – 5 minutes or until you are feeling calm. This is great for anyone suffering from anxiety or mild panic attacks. By pursing your lips and

inflating your cheeks you create pressure on the vagus nerve in the back of your throat, which controls many of anxiety’s tell-tale symptoms such as sweating, racing heart, and nausea. By focusing on the count you help keep your mind free from anxious and fearful thoughts. 5. ‘Transformational Breath’ – from Strive to Thrive Transformational Breath is one of the world’s most cutting edge breath-work techniques, which has helped people reach their full potential, from those wishing to simply improve their respiratory system to those wanting to reach higher states of consciousness. Here’s a little taster you can practice on your own. Prop yourself up on the bed at a semi-reclined angle so your chest is higher than your legs. Make sure you are warm and comfortable, and that your head and neck are properly supported. Have your hands on your lower abdomen - a few inches below the navel. Relax the jaw and open the mouth wide, but not strained, and take a deep inhalation, belly should rise like a balloon, and exhale with a quick sigh. Keep all your focus on the inhalation. Inhalation should be about twice as long as the exhalation. Exhalation should be a quiet and relaxed. Keep the breath connected, so no pauses between breaths. Repeat this conscious connected breath from between 2 and 5 minutes (but no more without a breath coach) and notice any physical sensations in the body. Rest for one minute as you return to a normal breathing pattern – breathing through the nose.

Yeovil youngsters take to the West End stage Performing on a West End stage is a dream that many youngsters have, but with such stiff competition, it is only the very few who are able to make that dream a reality. But last month students from Razzamataz Yeovil were able to perform in a gala show in London’s Her Majesty’s Theatre, home to the long running The Phantom of the Opera. The special performance on Sunday 13th November 2016 featured 12 Razzamataz schools and more than 300 students. Razzamataz Yeovil students performed a piece about ‘13’, a coming of age musical. “Performing on a West End

stage was a magical moment for our students and we were so delighted to be able to offer them this amazing opportunity,” says Claire Walford, Principal of Razzamataz Yeovil. “It was so great to see our students perform in such an iconic theatre. Super Heroes at St Cuthbert’s Real Life Super Heroes at St Cuthbert's Infants, start the term with sirens and safety! The children had a fantastic start to the new half term, as the introduction to their topic on safety involved a 'superhero safety' day. First the children had great fun as they arrived for school dressed up as both superheroes and 'real life' heroes. In amongst the Caped Crusaders, Spider men and Supergirls were lots of paramedics, nurses, police officers and firemen which was perfect as the children were joined throughout the day by all the emergency services. The police with a riot van and police car, the Fire brigade with the fire engine, the RNLI with their beach and water safety kit and St John Ambulance who led the children in mini first aid workshops. The children had hands on experience and safety advice from all the services and at one point the playground was covered in emergency service vehicles and personnel with a Head teacher modelling riot gear! The staff were so pleased that these critical life

saving teams took time out of their busy schedules to come to the school to reinforce key messages of safety in a truly exciting and engaging manner.

Charity calls for new focus on writing for enjoyment National Literacy Trust publishes research showing sharp drop in how often children write outside school

The National Literacy Trust has published new research which shows that just one fifth of children and young people write daily outside the classroom. This is a significant drop since 2014 when more than a quarter of pupils put pen to paper or wrote digitally every day outside school. In fact, more than a quarter of children now say they rarely or never write something that isn’t for school. Children’s and Young People’s Writing in 2015, a report from the charity’s sixth annual survey of 32,569 children and young people aged between eight and 18, also evidences a decline in pupils enjoying writing in their free time and a significant gender gap: ✸ Just 44.8% of pupils said they enjoy writing either very much or quite a lot in 2015, versus 49.3% in 2014 ✸ While more than half of girls (51.9%) enjoy writing, only just over one third of boys (36.8%) do ✸ Boys are twice as likely as girls to say they don’t enjoy writing at all (19.4% versus 9.1%) and that they never write (10.6% versus 5.1%) The National Literacy Trust warns that this development could have a negative impact on school attainment, as children and young people who enjoy writing very much are seven times more likely to write above the level expected for their age, compared with those who do not enjoy writing at all (50.3% versus 7.2%). Similarly, students who write outside school daily are five times more likely to have levels of writing above those expected for their age, compared with those who never write outside the classroom (30.9% versus 5.8%). This drop in daily writing frequency outside school is in stark contrast to the huge increase in daily reading frequency; from 29.1% in 2010 to 43% in 2015. In addition, the drop in writing enjoyment contrasts with the steady annual increase in reading enjoyment evidenced in

children and young people from 49.1% in 2010 to 54.8% in 2015. National Literacy Trust Director Jonathan Douglas said: “We are calling for a new focus on writing for enjoyment from both government and the education sector. The prioritisation of reading for enjoyment in schools,

government policy and through third sector initiatives has reaped huge rewards at primary school stage, with increasing numbers of children demonstrating enjoyment of reading. “National Literacy Trust research indicates an undeniable correlation between writing enjoyment and frequency, and attainment. Whilst the new curriculum focus on spelling and grammar and phonics is important, it must not come at the expense of encouraging writing for enjoyment by teaching the writing process and encouraging children to write for purpose and audience. We must seek to create a culture or community of writers within schools.” National Literacy Trust author ambassador Frances Hardinge, whose children’s book The Lie Tree was named Costa Book of

the Year, said: “Hopefully we can inspire more children and young people to write for pleasure, in much the same way we have seen a heartening rise in recreational reading. Regular writing of any sort allows one to develop greater facility and confidence with language... and more to the point can be a lot of fun." Be patient Children who have their writing corrected too often or are asked to write things out ‘properly’ can lose interest in doing it at all. Writing correctly is a skill that takes a few years to develop, and it’s important to encourage your child rather than over-correct them.

Provide lots of fun writing materials Provide lots of paper, crayons, felt tips and pencils for your child so they can write whenever the mood takes them. Providing materials in lots of different colours and styles can make children enjoy using them more. You can even get creative and use chalk on outdoor walls and pavements.

Be relaxed about spelling Spelling usually becomes more accurate as children learn to read, which takes time. If children become anxious about how to write down a word, they may develop a habit of only writing what they know they can spell – so try to avoid over-correcting their spelling too.

Lead by example Let your child see you writing and show them how you write. For example, if you write down a shopping list, show your child what’s on the list and explain what it’s for. This will help your child see the value of writing as an everyday skill. You can also write little notes and letters to your child and encourage them to reciprocate.

Praise your child’s writing Children who know that anything they write will be praised will write more often and will therefore get better at it. Make sure your child knows that you’re proud of their writing – you can even display it around the house. Literacy Apps Learning to write doesn’t just have to mean putting pen to paper - there are lots of apps designed to get children writing. There is a curated list of apps for helping children with their writing on the National Literacy Trust’s Literacy Apps website. Remember that it’s important for you and your child to engage with any apps together, rather than leaving them to play on their own.
