The high cost of using solicitors often adds to the severe stress of a divorce or separation. Usually, solicitors charge up to £200 or more per hour and their fees can reduce family assets at an alarming rate. In addition, the mere act of going to a solicitor, and the adversarial process then followed, draw otherwise sensible people into protracted and expensive disputes. One problem arises because solicitors can only act for their client; the husband or wife. This means that they cannot work with both parties together in order to seek a sensible settlement. Instead, solicitors talk to “the other side’s” solicitor, immediately doubling the cost. The process usually becomes contentious as each solicitor has to “win” something in order to justify his or her fees. This process seems
designed to promote ill-will between husband and wife. Whatever good qualities they saw in each other that drew them together in the first place are gradually forgotten. They are urged to emphasise the worst aspects of their once life time partner in order to improve the eventual settlement. Finally, any eventual settlement reached (usually years after they had started) is diminished hideously by legal costs. In other legal cases, there is another party to help bear the costs; in family law cases, the same family bears the costs for both sets of solicitors. Probably the most important result of the current adversarial process is that not only the financial security of children is put at risk but also their emotional security. While it may be impossible to shield children from all the effects of their parents separating, it makes it much worse if the separation becomes a legal dispute with each party seeking a victory over the other. On the other hand, while many people would prefer not to face the problems caused by using a solicitor, they find it too daunting to handle a divorce and related matters on their own. There is another way to seek legal help with divorce and related matters. It is possible to receive advice from lay legal advisers who have specialist
knowledge and experience in the field. They seek to promote a fair agreement between the parties and if this proves impossible, advise on the various steps that may need to be taken. Bridge Lay Law (www.bridgelaylaw.co.uk) is one such firm and offers lay advice on a whole range of matters, including divorce, separation, civil partnerships, and children matters.
Bridge’s aim is to provide an affordable alternative to high street solicitors; an alternative that provides high and personal client care with very considerable savings in legal fees. The local representative in Somerset is Stephen David [pictured], a barrister living in Taunton, with a wide experience of family and commercial matters.

The research also reveals the injuries and illnesses experienced by parents when they were children were closely tied to traditional stereotypes with kitchen injuries affecting double the number of girls, and competitive sports injuries affecting almost twice the number of boys. As teenagers, this generation also fell foul of inappropriate clothing. Almost 29% of men and over 42% of women admitted to being injured by either stilettoes or platforms! Louise White continues: “It is difficult for parents to get the right balance between protecting their children from harm’s way and making sure they grow up as confident and strong people. Children young and old will always be faced with illness or injuries, but being prepared with trusted remedies, which have been passed down through generations, means parents can have the confidence to let their children experience life, safe in the knowledge that they have everything they need to get their loved ones back on their feet as quickly as possible.”
SU
These figures, from a survey of 2,000 parents questioned on their childhood behaviour and that of their own children, provide a stark contrast to the childhoods of their parents, where spending at least 11 hours playing outside a week was the norm for the majority. While a drop in outdoor playtime is perhaps unsurprising given today’s reliance on game consoles and tablets, the findings, conducted as part of Omega Pharma’s Generations of Care campaign, raise the question of the true impact of ‘cotton wool culture’. Louise White, Marketing Manager for the Generations of Care campaign remarks: “The results also revealed over one in 10 children of today suffer from common illnesses more regularly than their parents. Outdoor playtime is essential for keeping kids healthy and happy with both immediate and long term benefits. Regular time outdoors cultivates creativity and learning; helps manage weight issues, as well as boosting the immune system
to ward off childhood ailments like coughs and colds.” Almost two fifths of parents admitted their children don’t enjoy the same freedom they did as a child, with nearly a quarter refusing to let their son or daughter leave the house without a mobile phone and 18% are so concerned about child safety, their teenagers aren’t even allowed a paper round. Shockingly, the fear of injury and illness is also putting some mums and dads off letting their kids take part in sports such as rugby, horse riding and hockey. So is it any wonder children aren’t reaping the health benefits of fresh air? When injuries and illnesses do arise, it seems parents are turning to the same tried and tested medicines that were used to help them. Professor Dominic Upton, Chartered Health Psychologist, explains why remedies such as Buttercup Cough Syrup and TCP were cited as mums and dads health fail safes: “Childhood medicines, such as the ones your mother used, can evoke calming and positive memories that can help individuals’ better deal with illness and pain. Trust in medicines is extremely important so if you have used a treatment successfully in the past and know that it works, then you will be happier using it on your loved ones.”
IL
New research shows efforts to keep children from harm’s way may be having a detrimental impact on child health. More than a third of today’s children spend a max of 5 hours outdoors a week and worryingly, 7% spend no time outdoors at all.

Daydreams and Diaries On 5 April 2014, the V&A Museum of Childhood will open Daydreams and Diaries, the Story of Jacqueline Wilson, an exhibition exploring the life and work of one of Britain’s best-loved children’s authors. The exhibition will chart Dame Jacqueline Wilson’s continued and prolific contribution to children’s literature, offering fans an extraordinary insight into her life and work. The exhibition is on tour from Seven Stories, National Centre for Children’s Books, Newcastle. The V&A Museum of Childhood will be the only London venue to host the exhibition. Former Children’s Laureate (2005-2007) and multiaward winning author, Jacqueline Wilson has written nearly 100 books which have been translated into 34 different languages, and has sold over 35 million copies in the UK alone. The exhibition will celebrate these outstanding achievements and look at her work in a wider context, reflecting on the diverse lives of her characters and the impact of their stories on young readers. Particular attention will be paid to some of Jacqueline’s own favourite stories including Tracy Beaker, The Illustrated Mum, The Suitcase Kid, Hetty Feather and Cliffhanger. Visitors can delve into Jacqueline’s life and work and find their own inspiration in the settings where she came up with some of the ideas for her most famous books. The exhibition begins with a replica of the childhood bedroom where she developed her love for reading and finishes with a mockup of the study in which she now works. Also on display will be short stories and diaries written by Jacqueline as a young girl, showing the origins of her talent for writing, while annotated drafts of favourites such as Tracy Beaker and the later work Hetty Feather will give fans further insight in to these well loved stories.

Child performers shine out on screen! It’s not everyday an elevenyear-old gets to star alongside a veteran TV actor, but Stagecoach pupil Pollyana did just that. After several rounds of auditions, Pollyana was cast alongside James Bolan, longtime TV star who currently plays the Grandpa in Grandpa in my Pocket on CBeebies. Pollyana had her TV debut as Belinda-Lucinda, a girl who is determined to spoil everyone’s fun! She loved the time on camera working with all the other child actors – she stars in at least two episodes and we hope the producers will keep her character alive for a good long while! Every week Pollyana joins her friends Grace and Ruby and many other children aged
4-18 at Stagecoach to train in singing, dance and drama classes. This term their voices are soaring and feet can’t stop moving to brilliant musical theatre tunes. Not to be outdone, Grace and Ruby have just appeared in an advert for Scottish Widows on ITV – they got a prime spot during Dancing on Ice and the ad is still airing, so look out for two giggling girls! At Stagecoach we are immensely proud of every achievement our students make, whether on TV like these girls, or the confidence to sing that first solo in front of an audience of parents and friends. If your child could do with developing their confidence, voice, co-ordination and
creativity, give us a ring to find out more about how Stagecoach stretches children in three directions at once! 0117 953 2500 www.stagecoach.co.uk

Childcare costs rise 19% in 2013 – Childcare Vouchers are the answer With the government expected to launch its new Tax-free Childcare scheme in the autumn of 2015, the cost of childcare is currently a hot topic. The annual childcare report filed by findababysitter. com shows that childcare costs rose by 19% in the year to December 2013. The survey found that parents were struggling to return to work because of the availability and cost of childcare. There has been a significant increase in demand for childcare. However, parents are finding the cost of childcare is preventing them from making returning to work pay. The survey reported that 24% of unemployed parents would like to work and younger parents are keener to get a job – with 38% aged between 18-24 stating, they would work if they could afford to pay for childcare. For many parents, providing their children with a quality and secure environment is top of their list when looking for childcare. The cost of food, quality child carers, resources and equipment all reflect the cost of the service provided. Parents can access more affordable childcare by using Childcare Vouchers to pay for their childcare costs for children up to the age of 16. Employers play an important role when it comes to making childcare more affordable as parents can only
access Childcare Vouchers if their employer offers them. Childcare Vouchers are available to help working parents to save up to £933 per year (subject to individual circumstances) on the cost of their childcare. As the Government is launching their new Tax-free Childcare scheme in 2015, many employers are choosing not to provide Childcare Vouchers, even though they also save money on their Employers National Insurance contributions by doing so. Many parents will be worse off using the new scheme as it is only available to children under the age of 5 and for families where both parents work. Once implemented, new joiners will not be able to access Childcare Vouchers, only those already using them can take advantage of their savings. Childcare costs will continue to rise. Therefore, using Childcare Vouchers and any free entitlement to childcare can significantly help to reduce childcare costs, making childcare more affordable. Parents, whose employer doesn’t offer a Childcare Voucher scheme, can contact Busy Bees Benefits who will get in touch with their employer to set up a scheme. For more information about Childcare Vouchers and the savings they provide, please visit www. busybeesbenefits.com.

Working hard to restore book review damaged homes As home owners and human beings first, our hearts go out to any families that have had their homes damaged in the recent flooding. Summer at the Lake
By Erica James Published by Orion It is March. It is cold, wet and, quite frankly, utterly depressing. For me, the only way to survive the last dregs of winter is to reach for an old knitted jumper or cardigan, mash a huge pot of tea, and settle in with this delightfully escapist Erica James novel. Set on the edge of Lake Como, conjuring all the delights of summer and warmth, this charming story has just the right mix of love, sunshine and fun to remind us that Spring really is just around the corner.

platform, which supports and acknowledges that diversity. Brilliant.
An illustrated adventure telling the story of King Harald Sigurdsson, the last king of the Vikings. Based on a true story, Harald’s adventure takes him from a frightened teenager to wealthy and powerful warrior and finally, to a ruthless and tyrannical king, whose ambition leads him to a futile, yet glorious death at the battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066. This book is based on the medieval saga of King Harald Sigurdsson. It includes wonderful illustrations which bring the story to life and the special feature pages draw on real objects discovered from the Viking Age to illuminate the world Harald lived in. The Tale of King Harald also ties in with Key Stage 2 on the National Curriculum, for children aged 9–11. Go Faster Food for Kids

By Kenko & Chomei Published by Penguin This wonderful collection of essays and thoughts, written by two Buddhist monks in the 11th and 12th Century, are brilliant in conveying the vibrancy and humour of the authors’ minds, and argue a strong case for the universality of the human condition. Despite the differences of both culture and time; these two philosophers ask of themselves the same questions we still ponder over today. Exquisitely translated and presented, the voices of these two men seem as clear and as sharp

The Lewis Chessmen and what happened to them
By Irving Finkel, illustrated by Clive Hodgson Published by The British Museum Press A charming and original illustrated story for children, following the adventures of the world’s most famous chessmen. The Lewis Chessmen were found on the Isle of Lewis in mysterious circumstances. Consisting of elaborately worked walrus ivory and whales’ teeth in the form of seated kings and queens, bishops, knights, warders and pawns, this curious chess set is strongly influenced by Norse culture. Of the 93 pieces known to us today, 11 pieces are in Edinburgh at the National Museum of Scotland, and 82 are in the British Museum, where they have delighted generations of visitors with their wonderfully expressive details. In this engaging story, Irving Finkel follows the many adventures of the chessmen after they came to light on a Scottish beach in the nineteenth century. It ends with the big surprise that befell them in September 1993, when they were all temporarily reunited for the first time since their separation, at a Special Exhibition of Chessmen at the British Museum. Eureka! The most amazing scientific discoveries of all time
By Dr Mike Goldsmith Published by Thames & Hudson This exciting, educational children’s book details the real-life stories of scientists throughout history who made discoveries that changed the way we think about the world. Read about Galileo and Marie Curie, who both – in very different circumstances – risked peril during their research, or about Alexander Fleming, who discovered the power of penicillin by accident. Packed with fascinating details of experiments and equipment, blunders and lucky escapes, ‘Eureka!’ will appeal to children around the age of 9 and over with an interest in history, science and adventure.

Mum me time Jam-packed schedules, running around after the kids, managing work and doing the lion’s share of the housework means the average mum gets less than an hour and a half all to herself each week.
The study into British mums’ ‘me time’ found those rare moments of peace are usually spent catching up on the latest soaps, watching TV in bed, reading or enjoying a wellearned cup of tea. The hectic life of mum emerged in a study commissioned by TVbed. com and found 51 per cent of frazzled mums regularly go whole weeks without even a single minute relaxing on their own. While nearly three quarters of the 2,000 mums studied felt they lived their lives entirely for other people. Sean McCarroll, managing director for TVBed.com said: “The results show just how hard the country’s mums work and the extent to which families rely on them. “But having just over 15 minutes to themselves each day isn’t enough and partners and other family members need to appreciate the lengths she goes to for the family and try to see she gets more. “Women clearly view their bedroom as the one place they can get true relaxation and a bit of time to themselves and whether that’s unwinding while watching the television in bed, catching up on soaps or time spent reading or dozing, it’s important that a woman’s bedroom is kept as her sanctuary.” The study also found nearly two thirds feel the chores aren’t shared equally between themselves and their partners and that the current arrangement is unfair. When quizzed on their domestic workloads it emerged that mums take on 78 per cent of the home chores. And more
than half of frazzled mums studied said they don’t have time to have their own hobbies or interests. When that rare free time does come along, women were most likely to describe their bedroom as their biggest sanctuary and the place they relax the most. In fact, half of the 2,000 mums said the only place they can relax in a typical week is in their bedroom. And over half (55 per cent) said one of the biggest highlights of their week was the chance to catch their favourite soaps and television programmes undisturbed. Seven in ten women say their partner gets a lot more free time than them over the course of a normal week. A begrudging one in five women resent the fact that their partner has more time to relax in their routine and that they’re more easily able to switch off after working. Three quarters of mums said that, even in their quiet moments to themselves, they could never fully relax if they knew there were jobs outstanding. In fact, even in rest mums are still working42 per cent said that the very often they’ll spend some of their rare free time planning for the next day. Sean McCarroll added: “Mums are working so hard and are very much the driving force behind many families but the results show just how hard they find it to completely switch off.” “Many live so much for the rest of the family that it can be hard to remember themselves. Even if it’s just a matter of catching their favourite programme each week or taking half an hour out to relax in their bedroom, it’s important mum remembers to get that ‘me time’ each day to recharge.”
