Dear Readers...

The Easter break is nearly upon us and for those of you longing to see the Easter bunny, he’s popping up everywhere! A garden centre is the kind of place you might expect to see him but how about spotting him in a dive show? Tom Daley take note – you have a potential rival! Curiouser and curiouser – white rabbits everywhere. As if that wasn’t bizarre enough, there’s the chance to see one of my favourites The Cat in the Hat at Exeter Northcott Theatre. Without doubt, the funniest, most mischievous cat you can ever hope to meet. From rabbits and cats, to Roman treasure and knights jousting - it’s all there… Happy Reading,

at Play Castle Play Castle, which is situated just a couple of minutes from junction 26 is proving a big hit with families in the local area. With an impressive 3 storey play frame and separate toddler area featuring plenty of ride on toys there is plenty to keep the children entertained.

Birthday parties are becoming increasingly popular. Every birthday child becomes king or queen of the castle and receives a special crown/ tiara during their ‘coronation’. Everyone in the castle is then invited to sing happy birthday to the newly crowned royal.

Whilst the children are letting off steam, their grown up’s can relax and enjoy hot drinks, snacks and meals from the café. Vegetarians are catered for and children can choose from favourites such as pasta Bolognese or chicken nuggets. Staff at Play Castle are excited to be introducing ‘Creative Castle’ mornings which will give children an opportunity to explore their artistic side as well as

enjoying use of the main play equipment. ‘We are very excited to be introducing these new sessions to our customers. Our aim is to provide a safe, fun and stimulating environment for all the children who visit us as well as a relaxing meeting place for their parents’ explains BGD UK, the local family run company who own Play Castle. Entry is £3.50 for under 4’s

and £4.50 for over 4’s. Babies under a year and adults are free. On weekdays from 3-4.30 pm during term time, take advantage of a special play and meal deal including use of the play equipment and a main meal from the children’s menu for only £5.95. To enquire about parties or the facilities at Play Castle please contact them on: 01823 652704. By: Ginny Mills.

The Broken Time Machine

Lots of different living history elements, interactive activities and children’s crafts will come together this Easter holiday for the Weston-super-Mare Museum’s family friendly event ‘The Broken Time Machine’. Visitors can meet a whole host of different characters, as well as taking part in trails and activities, when the time machine brings back bits of history from the museum’s past into the present.

Following on from the popularity of our Night in the Museum and History Week events, the Easter event will feature characters from Weston’s past; from our Iron Age ancestors right up to the ever-popular Clara. Rather than returning in a nice tidy order, however, the time machine is broken and what it will bring back can be a mystery. By helping us to find the broken pieces of the machine within the galleries, over the two weeks, visitors can help us to eventually restore time to the museum. Entry to the event is free, but normal admission charges apply to the galleries: children under 16 have free admission to the museum, but must be accompanied by an adult, there is no need to book in advance. The event will

take place on Tuesday 31st March to Saturday 11th April, 10am until 4pm (excluding Easter Sunday). For more information, please visit the museum website at www. westonmuseum.org, email museum@wsm-tc.gov.uk or phone 01934 621028.

Build a successful business from home

FAMILY FAMILY FAMILY

The Valley, a perfect family retreat Hidden away behind secure entrance gates lies thirteen acres of gardens and woodland in the heart of Cornwall. This oasis of serenity features a unique collection of luxury selfcatering holiday cottages offering the perfect family escape at any time of the year.

Only a few miles from the city of Truro and the bustling port town of Falmouth The Valley provides the ideal base to explore the best of Cornwall, with heritage sites, outdoor activities, and stunning

beaches all within a 30 minute drive. The exclusive leisure facilities include indoor and outdoor heated swimming pools, a separate games room, fitness suite, tennis and squash courts. There are play areas with swings for children of all ages. Leave more room in the car for the fun stuff and take advantage of the complimentary highchairs, stair gates, bed guards and standard travel cots, as well as a superb selection of toys, DVD’s and books to borrow

from reception or whilst dining in the stylish yet child-friendly restaurant, Café Azur. If you want to be truly indulgent, Café Azur’s delicious menu can be enjoyed in the comfort and privacy of your own cottage; perfect for those evenings when you are tired from family days out exploring Cornwall’s many attractions. Alternatively you can arrange for one of The Valley’s qualified babysitters to take charge of your little ones and grab a grown-up night out in one of the superb restaurants in nearby Truro or Falmouth.

An Easy-going Friendly Atmosphere in the Heart of Devon’s Countryside When asked what having her own Business with Forever Living had given Somerset Mum Nicola, she explained that it comes down to two main things.

“Firstly it has set me up financially for life with income I would have never achieved in my food background job. This means that I can buy the coffees and lunches when we go out as a family, I can buy what the kids need without my heart sinking at the price tag, I have yearly memberships for all the attractions like Longleat, Somerset Railway, Haynes Motor Museum and this gives me the choices needed to make great memories for the family at the drop of a hat”. “Secondly I must be honest and say that it is not always about the children and for me being able to pay for what I want and need is very important. For example having 1:1 fitness training sessions, buying new clothes for a special night out, having my hair done and being the best I can be without

having to worry about the cost means that I am a strong and balanced person whom my children will benefit from far more than if I had no purpose outside being a mum”. What do you think is needed for someone to have a successful business with Forever Living? “I love my business and for the most part it is very simple. I would say, that the most challenging part is developing the right mind set, so people I work with tend to be really looking for a new opportunity, they are ready to get trained, they want to be part of a dynamic team and at the end of the day are really excited about how if they work hard, in part time hours, they can create a wonderful tapestry of life for themselves. I once heard a very wise man say that you can ‘weave a tapestry’ for your life and I fully believe that. What my team within Forever gives is the support and guidance to do this in safe and fun territory”.

The cost of Divorce and Family Break-up The high cost of using solicitors often adds to the severe stress of a divorce or separation. Usually, solicitors charge up to £200 or more per hour and their fees can reduce family assets at an alarming rate. In addition, the mere act of going to a solicitor, and the adversarial process then followed, draw otherwise sensible people into protracted and expensive disputes.

One problem arises because solicitors can only act for their client; the husband or wife. This means that they cannot work with both parties together in order to seek a sensible settlement. Instead, solicitors talk to “the other side’s” solicitor, immediately doubling the cost. The process usually becomes contentious as each solicitor has to “win” something in order to justify his or her fees. This process seems designed to promote ill-will

between husband and wife. Whatever good qualities they saw in each other that drew them together in the first place are gradually forgotten. They are urged to emphasise the worst aspects of their once life time partner in order to improve the eventual settlement. Finally, any eventual settlement reached (usually years after they had started) is diminished hideously by legal costs. In other legal cases, there is another party to help bear the costs, in family law cases; the same family bears the costs for both sets of solicitors. Probably the most important result of the current adversarial process is that not only the financial security of children is put at risk but also their emotional security. While it may be impossible to shield children from all the effects of their parents separating, it makes it much worse if

the separation becomes a legal dispute with each party seeking a victory over the other. On the other hand, while many people would prefer not to face the problems caused by using a solicitor, they find it too daunting to handle a divorce and related matters on their own. There is another way to seek legal help with divorce and related matters – Bridge Law. As a consequence of the way we operate, we can offer low rates and fixed costs. This is partly because we do not carry the high overheads of firms of solicitors and partly because the client carries out much of the work involved directly, only assisted and supported by us when necessary. The partner involved, Stephen David (pictured), is a barrister with direct Public Access Accreditation and so can accept instructions without the need of a solicitor. Stephen

is regulated by the Bar Council and has full professional indemnity insurance as well as wide experience of family and commercial matters. Bridge Law provides an affordable alternative to high street solicitors; an alternative that provides high and personal client care with very considerable savings in legal fees. Stephen is based in Taunton and can be contacted on stephendavid@bridgelaw. co.uk or 07740 786232. Eliska standing tall Bird and bunny fun at Paignton Zoo at Living Coasts Paignton Zoo’s female Rothschild’s giraffe Eliska is now two months old. Born to mother Janica and father Yoda on Sunday 11th January, she was rejected by her mother, so zoo keepers stepped in to bottle feed her.

At Living Coasts, the theme for 2015 is Dive & Flight. Torquay’s coastal zoo and aquarium is celebrating everything that flies in the air or dives in the water. Staff will use the theme in talks, quizzes, craft workshops and trails.

Hand rearing a giraffe is a lot of extra work and commitment for the keepers. Senior Head Keeper of Mammals Matthew Webb: “She is fed 4 times a day. She could need milk for up to 9 months. We will start weaning her when she is around 5 to 6 months, depending on how she gets on.” All the hard work is paying off. The calf, which stood at nearly six feet tall at birth, is thriving on creamy organic milk donated by Riverford Dairy. Named Eliska by her devoted keepers, she is getting through around 50 litres of full fat milk a week, plus nearly 5 litres (that’s 17x 300ml tubs) of single cream for added richness. Matt: “She will take in around 10% of her body weight in milk each day and gain weight just as quickly. As she grows, so will her milk requirements. She was 63 kilos – 139 pounds, 9.9 stone - at birth, now she’s around

At Easter there will be an Easter Egg trail, live chicks and a crazy Easter Bunny Dive Show. The cute chicks will be in Front of House between Good Friday and Easter Monday (3rd to 6th April). Children will be able to follow a fun trail around the zoo and receive a chocolaty treat when they finish. On Wednesday 8th April there will be a special Easter Bunny Dive Show. This could be the only scuba diving Easter Bunny in the country! Visitors will be able to watch the Easter Bunny and his helpers as they dive with the penguins and deliver Easter enrichment to these playful birds. There will even be a chance to win some prizes in a special game of Easter Bingo. The dives take place on Wednesday 8th April at 11:30am and 3:00pm. Meanwhile, at Paignton Zoo over the Easter weekend there’s the Big Ostrich Easter Egg Hunt, with the added

April 2,1805 Birth of Hans Christian Andersen

COPENHAGEN, DENMARK - JULY 1: The Fairy-tale House, Hans Christian Andersen’s Museum on July 1, 2014 in Copenhagen

No collection of fairy tales would be complete without the works of the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. In fact, Andersen’s life was like a fairy tale in many ways. Out of the poverty, hardship, and loneliness of his youth, he came to be one of the most honoured men of his time. Many of the more than 160 fairy tales he wrote, including The Ugly Duckling, The Princess and the Pea, and The Little Mermaid, have become literary classics enjoyed by children and adults alike. Andersen was born on April 2, 1805, in Odense, Denmark. His parents were poor; his father worked as a shoemaker and his mother was a washerwoman. His father, who died when Andersen was 11, entertained him with old Danish legends and stories from The Arabian Nights.

The people of Odense never knew what to make of the tall, awkward boy. When he recited long passages from plays or did a clumsy dance or insisted on singing, they could hardly help laughing. Everyone advised him to learn a trade, but this he would not do. He was forever saying that he was going to be famous. In 1819, Andersen moved to the capital city of Copenhagen, where he hoped to become an actor in the Royal Theatre. Many people of the theatre and wealthy families of the city tried to help him, without much success. His dancing master gave up, and so did his singing teacher. Directors of the Royal Theatre sympathized with his efforts to write plays but finally concluded that Andersen needed an education. One of the directors raised money to send him away to school. The next few years were the unhappiest of his life. Andersen was much older than the

other students, and the schoolmaster found endless ways to make fun of him. Finally when word of Andersen’s plight reached his benefactors in Copenhagen, he was removed from the school and put into the hands of a private tutor. He later attended and graduated from Copenhagen University. After his schooling, Andersen spent many years traveling and writing poems, books, and plays, which met with some success. It was not until he was 30 that he wrote any fairy tales. His first small book of fairy tales became popular almost immediately, and from then on his fame grew rapidly, spreading from country to country. Andersen put many pieces of his own life into his fairy tales. He never forgot that his mother as a young girl had been forced to go begging. This led him to write The Little Match

Girl, a story full of compassion for the unfortunate ones of this Earth. And his own personal experiences are reflected in The Ugly Duckling, which points out that sometimes the qualities that make you feel lonely, different, and out of place are the very qualities that, when properly used, can make you shine. In 1867 he returned to Odense to be honoured by his country. Standing on the balcony of the hall where the ceremony was held, he saw below him the city square, full of people who cheered him, and bright with thousands of candles burning in the windows of all the buildings. Andersen published his last fairy tales in 1872, and after a long illness, he died in Copenhagen on August 4, 1875. Biography written by Danny Kaye for The New Book of Knowledge®. 2008

Why is Karate so great for kids? Well, Karate is a great martial art for children to learn. When Karate was

made part of the Japanese school curriculum in the 1920’s it was not only because of the excellent self defence skills that Karate offered, but because the Japanese realised that Karate children were healthier, had better physiques, and better balance and coordination. They noticed how the discipline within Karate helped children gain better concentration and develop within the children better self images. In my 32 years experience of teaching children Karate I have seen for myself the benefits children gain, how shy children gain confidence and come out of their shells, while hyperactive children learn how to concentrate and calm down. At Millfield Pre-Prep we aim to inspire and engage each child to make the most of their talents and potential. Small class sizes, experienced teachers, a broad range of subjects and activities, along with inspirational indoor and outdoor spaces, enable us to achieve this. A thorough grounding in the basics of reading, writing and mathematics is combined with a dynamic topic based curriculum. Weekly lessons include French, swimming, PE, dance, music and cookery. Our on-site Forest School is a big part of our outdoor learning programme, where children have the opportunity to find out about living things and explore taking risks. The messy mud kitchen is a favourite attraction and baking rolls in the bread oven, learning to cook over an open fire, making dens and sawing wood all add to their skills and growing sense of independence. The children also take regular walks through our own fields and apple orchards, visit our ponies in the stables and grow

vegetables in our ‘alittlements’. Before and after school care means we are on-hand for early drop-off and later collection and there are over 20 weekly free after school clubs on offer including tennis, football, gym, chess,

trampolining and working with clay. Paid for clubs such as riding, ballet and dance are also available, run by our expert Millfield coaches. Fees can be partly offset by Early Years funding and the TaxFree Childcare scheme.

Wellington – so much to offer If it is academic results you are concerned about for your child, then look no further than Wellington School. We had superb GCSE and A level results across all subjects and 5 pupils taking up Oxbridge places. Pupils study the more rigorous IGCE in Maths and Science as well as Latin and Greek and the emphasis is strongly academic.

But Wellington has so much more to offer than exam results. With a Director in Residence, the performing arts go from strength to strength. From the rip-roaring success of ‘Our House – the Madness Musical’ in the summer to serious Chekhov productions and a huge range of bands, orchestras and ensembles, the whole school is taking advantage of a range of exciting opportunities. Our superb Chapel Choir performs regularly and our versatile musicians swept the board recently in singing competitions and exam results.

We have superb sports facilities and a specialist strength and conditioning coach who is taking fitness to new levels across all sporting disciplines. Steffan Jones, ex Somerset Cricketer is also developing an elite cricket programme, so Wellington is the place to be for sport. We nurture and teach pupils from 3-11 in the Prep School and 11-18 in the Senior School, and we are justly proud of the rounded, all-

encompassing education they receive. We call it “Learning For Life”. Join us at our next Open Morning on Monday May 4th from 9am to 12noon. What makes Sherborne Girls special? One of the distinguishing features of an education at Sherborne Girls is the unrelenting commitment to a full boarding ethos. Currently, 94% of girls are full boarders, and the few remaining day girls will be found in school from breakfast until way past evening prep, and participating fully in evening and weekend activities. Full boarding offers so much more. The opportunity to offer girls the chance to be part of a community that works hard and plays hard together. From early morning lacrosse practice to evening service in Sherborne Abbey, a vast range of clubs, societies and guest speaker events, the chance to get involved in evening and weekend volunteering activities - whether it’s providing musical entertainment for the elderly in the local hospital ward or litter picking in and around the local community. A close collaboration with Sherborne School ensures a busy programme of social activities throughout the week and weekend, including formal dinners, discos and parties, the chance to participate in joint music and drama productions, evening lectures and societies, as well as the opportunity to just ‘chill out’. Life in a boarding environment means social interaction and team-work thrive; girls have to learn how to live and work with other. They learn to collaborate and become team players by organising a wide range of in-house events, and consequently develop a true sense of loyalty and belonging to their houses. Away from the direct aspirations of sometimes ambitious parents, full boarding means girls have the chance to find their own path and reflect about the merits of their choices. They

have the opportunity to learn about themselves in as many ways as possible. Perhaps the most valuable preparation for life that a full boarding environment provides is instilling the essence of resilience and perseverance

that is essential for today’s rapidly changing and increasingly unfamiliar world. In an era when the number of true full boarding schools is declining, Sherborne Girls is still a shining example of full boarding at its very best.

Parent Talk April 2015 19

Are you facing isolation at the school gate? By Juliet Turnbull Feeling ignored, shut out or blanked by others at the school gate is one of the biggest complaints amongst mothers. Recent headlines have been littered with stories about judgement, the self-appointed ‘Queen Bee’ phenomenon reports that almost half of first time mothers admit to dreading the daily school run because of cliques of other parents loitering at the school gates. But how much of this fear and dread is really justified? Why do we feel this way? Is it all in our heads and how can we move forward in a positive way? The environment at the school gates is rarely black and white; you will find a colourful mix of people from first time mothers and notso-new ones, to mothers who have older children in different years, fathers, grandparents doing their pick-up duties, child minders, older siblings and more. Of course, there’s a good chance that some of these groups will know and want to huddle and chat to each other but that doesn’t mean they are deliberately excluding you. If we strip everything back, the truth is, our own personal demons are at the root of these worries, so we need to unbundle what’s going on inside of us first and put those things right so we feel more empowered at the school gate. Here are a few real life observations and some practical tips to help you make sense of the school gate and hopefully tackle any concerns head on. It’s a journey

Let’s start by looking at why some mothers feel the way they do. Whether you’re a first time mother or not, it’s not unusual to harbour feelings of isolation at some point in your life, but understanding where these feelings stem from will help you to deal with them head on. Every mother starts their own individual journey of selfdiscovery the first time they

arrive at the school gates and that journey is constantly evolving (if you think about the number of different school gates you’ll arrive at as your children progress through nursery, preschool, infant, primary and secondary). For the first time, it’s not about you it’s about your child. Initially, the only commonality you might have with those other parents at the school gates is your children – so you could use that commonality to strike a conversation. Like arriving at a party where you don’t know a soul, at first, making conversation feels a bit clunky and awkward but in time it will feel less so. Don’t over-think it

Don’t rush it or over-think it because finding a comfortable place at the school gate (that is right for you), takes time. Try not to give time to any negative internal dialogue you might have with yourself on whether you fit in or whether you are being judged or excluded because it doesn’t help you. Look for a solution by focusing that energy in a positive way with a degree of realism and remind yourself that you cannot suppose to know for a minute what another person is thinking or feeling, or indeed what pressures they may be under. The school run is a hectic and frantic time of the day for most of us and the reality is, most mothers are more concerned about getting their child through the school gates on time than they are about anything else. You should also try asking yourself why are you having those negative thoughts in the first place - is something else is going on in your life which is making you feel unsettled, discontented or lacking in confidence?

personal it is a projection of their own reality. Judgement or feelings of isolation usually stem from within because you can only truly feel something if you’ve participated in it yourself, so the best advice is if you don’t like it, don’t take part. Make an effort

Take the pressure off yourself and recognise that everyone’s agenda at the school gate is different, some people will want to build relationships and others won’t (for varying reasons). Ask yourself, what is it you want from school gate? Do you want to make new friends to socialise with outside of school run time? Do you just want a friendly face you can pass the time of day with at the gate? Do you want to make new business contacts? Building new relationships can seem daunting and it takes time, but if you take the plunge early on and make the effort you can start that journey yourself and find out what works for you. You might be the type of person who enjoys meeting in large groups or perhaps you prefer one to one friendships? Either way create a conscious awareness around what you like to do and put a stake in the ground by arranging a coffee date, a night out, go for a dog walk or even better, if you find a mother that you think you’ll get on with, invite them and their child for tea. Try to find a like-minded mother to bond with, that doesn’t mean that if you work full-time, they also have to work full time; they may be a stay-at-home mother it’s more important that you connect with someone who is on your own wave length. As in other areas of your life, establish relationships with people that give you energy rather than those who take it because that will also help you move forward in life.

Steer clear of idol gossip

Have confidence in your choices

There will always be idol gossip in life, it is human nature and it does happen at the school gates for sure. But if you don’t like gossip, don’t engage with it plain and simple. People will always make assumptions about you but it’s often not

If you are feeling isolated at the school gate, try to look at the source of that isolation. Go right back to what is going on inside of you. Yes, the school gate is a manic place and the calmness often comes from those mothers that hover at

MAGIC & BALLOONS Malcolm the Magician Magic and balloon modelling for Schools, Playgroups and Birthday Parties.

the gates after the mad rush is over and have the time to reflect and chat together. If you are a mother that doesn’t have the time for this, i.e. you work, have another child to drop off etc. you may feel like you are always walking away rather than interacting with that circle, but that doesn’t make what you are doing wrong. Ask yourself where you are walking towards? You are walking towards your own choices so have confidence in the choices you make because they are right for you and if something isn’t right, you can always change it. If you believe the choices you have made are the right ones, you will feel more confident as a result. Be yourself

Focus your energy on doing what is right for you and your family rather than getting sidetracked with what you think people are saying or not saying. The school gates will always be full of different kinds of people and that is as it should be; there will always be idol gossip and people will always filter into their groups because it is human nature, it’s just about finding out what works for you and taking charge of that. As Oscar Wilde quite rightly said: ‘Be yourself, everyone else is already taken’. Juliet Turnbull is a mother of two and a life/business coach and founder of 2to3days.com - a private online community that matches and connects talented mothers who want to work part time, with enlightened employers who are looking to fill roles parttime/flexibly.

Beep Beep! Day Beep Beep! campaign urges drivers to slow down to save little lives, as three in five parents report speeding around their child’s school. Road safety charity Brake and Churchill Insurance are urging drivers to ‘go 20’ and take more care in communities, as their latest survey puts the spotlight on irresponsible driving around schools and nurseries. Three in five parents reported witnessing speeding outside their child’s school or nursery in the past year, with the same number also reporting drivers pulling out or turning without looking properly.

Brake and Churchill’s survey of 1,000 parents of 5-11 year olds also found: ● Nearly half reported distracted driving, such as drivers on phones, around their child’s school. ● Two thirds reported inconsiderate or illegal driving around their child’s school. ● Three in 10 had witnessed children not being secured properly in child restraints. Worryingly, there are indications that parents themselves could be part of the problem. A third admitted they don’t drive more safely, for instance by slowing down and looking more than usual,

near schools and nurseries, and a quarter admitted they don’t even do so around their child’s own school or nursery. Three in five also admitted they don’t take more care around homes or shops. As well as teaching children aged two to seven road safety basics, Brake’s Beep Beep! Days raise awareness among parents and drivers about how they can keep kids safe. Brake and Churchill are appealing to all drivers, including parents, to take responsibility for children’s safety to help prevent the six child deaths and serious injuries that happen on UK roads every day. In particular, drivers are

being asked to stick to 20mph or below around schools, nurseries, homes and shops, to protect children and others on foot or bike. Find out about Brake’s GO 20 campaign. REGISTER!
