Super Heroes are living amongst us Just when you thought you’d reached the end of your parenting tether, a poll comes along and reveals the high regard in which your children actually hold you. It may even help you to breathe a sigh of relief and remind you that actually you are not just doing a good job, but a heroic one too. A new poll of more than 1,000 infant school children has explored their fascination with all things superheroes and revealed ‘mum’ and ‘dad’ to be at the top of children’s real-life super hero list. What’s more, such is the power of parents, 85% of the children polled, believe the grown-ups in their life have secret super powers too. According to a recent poll released to mark the launch of new children’s collectible range, SuperZings – Rivals of Kaboom, the superpowers parents have according to the children in order of vote are:

1. The power to talk to Father Christmas and the Tooth Fairy 2. The power to see me even when they’re not looking at me 3. The power to hear me even when I am whispering 4. The power to detect lies 5. The power to make me laugh even when I am grumpy 6.The power to make me tell the truth 7. The power to hide healthy ingredients in my food 8. The power to tie shoelaces that don’t come undone 9. They don’t really need to sleep 10. The power to hypnotise Beyond the family circle, when it comes to real-life super hero jobs, the emergency services and medical professionals get the vote with Firefighters, the Police, Doctors, Paramedics and Nurses taking the top five spots. Soldiers, teachers and astronauts score well too as does The Queen who came in at number nine in the poll. Interestingly “people who make

the internet” and “people who make computers and phones” score higher in the hero index than actors, athletes and The Prime Minister. ‘Playing’ heroes and dressing up as a superhero can have a transformative effect on children according to the survey. When they wear a superhero costume, 41% of the children said it makes them feel strong. A third said

it makes them think they can do anything they want to do. It makes more than a quarter of children (28%) feel more confident while 25% say it can help them to do good things. If they could have any superpower, flying was by far the power that most of the children (41%) would love to have. Invisibility (26%) and being able to run superfast (26%)

New research shows just 5% of adults have the skills and confidence to provide first aid in emergency situations

Three UK charities call on the government to make first aid a compulsory part of the school curriculum Three of the UK’s largest charities are seeking public support for first aid to become a compulsory part of the school curriculum, following new research which shows more than nine in ten adults would not be able to save lives in first aid emergencies. The British Red Cross, St John Ambulance and the British Heart Foundation – who together form the Every Child A Lifesaver Coalition – are calling on people throughout England to take part in the Government’s call for evidence on Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education, and join their push for first aid skills to be taught in all schools. Research, commissioned by the British Red Cross, 2 Parent Talk February 2018

asked more than 2,000 UK adults about their knowledge, confidence and willingness to intervene in three potentially life-threatening first aid emergencies – helping someone who is bleeding heavily, is unresponsive and breathing, or is unresponsive and not breathing. The findings show the vital need to provide first aid lessons in schools to address the public’s lack of knowledge and confidence to step in during a first aid emergency. The research shows: ● Only 1 in 20 people would feel knowledgeable, confident and willing to act in those three scenarios – 95% of people would not. ● Seven in ten adults lack the knowledge and confidence to act if someone collapsed and was unresponsive and breathing.

● Nearly seven in ten people polled lack the knowledge and confidence to act if someone was bleeding heavily. ● In addition to these scenarios, eight in ten adults also said they lack the knowledge and confidence to act if a baby was choking. Further research by the British Heart Foundation showed that 60% of adults would be worried about knowing what to do if they witnessed someone having a cardiac arrest and only 20% of respondents were able to correctly identify the signs of a cardiac arrest. Meanwhile, a survey by St John Ambulance shows that 80% of people feel that first aid lessons should be compulsory in all schools. But by making it compulsory for every child to receive just one hour of first aid education a year as part of PSHE, hundreds of thousands of young people could be empowered with the skills to save a life. Joe Mulligan, Head of First Aid Education at the British Red Cross, said: “When an emergency strikes, giving first aid could save someone’s life. We all hope that someone would be able to help us in an emergency, but our research shows that few people feel they have the skills and confidence to act in some serious situations. “By taking part in the government’s call for evidence and making first aid a mandatory part of PSHE on the national curriculum, you

could help us empower future generations with the simple but vital skills to save someone’s life in an emergency.” The Every Child a Lifesaver Coalition is asking teachers, parents, young people, and anyone who feels passionately about getting first aid taught in schools, to take part in the call for evidence. Carl Makins, Head of Training at St John Ambulance, said: “Children attend school for more than 1,000 hours a year; we’re asking for just one hour of that curriculum for them to learn first aid skills that will last a lifetime and might one day enable them to be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.’ Simon Gillespie, Chief Executive at the British Heart Foundation, said: “CPR really is the difference between life and death for thousands of people every year in the UK who suffer a cardiac arrest. Every second counts, so it is vital that school children across the UK are equipped with this simple, life-saving skill. It takes less than an hour to learn CPR, so dedicating just one PSHE lesson per year could create a generation of lifesavers.” The Government’s call for evidence Changes to the teaching of Sex and Relationship Education and PSHE closes on Monday 12th February 2018. If parents could have any superpower of their own, number one on the list would be Mary Poppins like powers for cleaning and tidying. Next would be the power to clone themselves so that they could be in more than one place at the same time while third would be the power to send the kids to sleep at the click of a finger. Dippy the Diplodocus is coming to a town near you

Dippy’s imminent arrival is so close you can almost hear his footsteps as he approaches the South of England on his first stop on his National UK tour. The Natural History Museum’s iconic Diplodocus cast, Dippy, arrives in the South West on the 10th February and will reside in Dorset County Museum’s glorious Victorian Hall until the 7th May 2018. As the biggest celebrity ever to visit the West Country, tickets to see Dippy are being snapped up fast with visitors coming from across the region. It’s anticipated that 70,000 visitors will visit Dorchester, so the museum is encouraging potential visitors to book now to avoid disappointment. His stay in Dorset will be the first and only opportunity for residents of the South West of England to come face to face with Dippy without having to travel to London - it really is too good an opportunity to miss. “We are so excited to be welcoming Dippy on Tour to the South West and thrilled to be the first host venue on his National UK tour. This is the first time that anybody has had the chance to see Dippy outside of London and it appears that parents and grandparents in particular are making the most of this once in a lifetime opportunity.” “With the Jurassic Coast, the

The #GiftABundle campaign makes it easy for parents to pass on outgrown baby clothing to support local families and reduce textile waste. This year Mothercare and environmental charity Hubbub aim to collect over 65,000 items of clothing from parents across the country which will then be redistributed to families who can benefit from them via local community groups and charities. From 12th February until 11th March 2018, parents can gift bundles of six - ten items of good quality, outgrown baby clothing for ages between premature to three years, in selected Mothercare stores across the UK.

Living Coasts February Half Term at The Museum of Somerset cleaner coasts There’s plenty on offer for families at The Museum of Somerset during February half term including the popular Castle Day. Inspired by Taunton’s 12th century castle, the museum is holding a day of activities on Sunday 11 February. Young visitors can attend Knight School and learn how to become a brave and noble knight. Taunton Garrison will be doing historical re-enactments based on the English Civil War and there will also be crafts and other activities to enjoy. The day runs from 10.00am to 5.00pm and costs £3 per person (age 3+) or £10 for a family.

Throughout the week from Monday 12 to Friday 16 February there will be children’s activities inspired by the colourful art of Hans Schwarz, now on display at the museum. The ‘Colourful Portraits’ activity runs from 10.30am to 1.00pm and from 2.00pm to 3.30pm and costs £1 per child (ages 3–11.) A ‘Colour Trail’ around the museum, costing £1, will also be available from 10 to 17 February. This half term, Paignton Zoo Environmental Park is launching its new events theme – and this year is going to be all about native species. This year, Living Coasts will be running a series of beach cleans around Torbay. Join our Coastal Crew and help us keep the shores clean! The beaches on our doorstep suffer with litter brought in by waves and left by beach users. All around Torbay, just away from the shoreline, is an underwater bed of sea grass which is home to many creatures, all of whom are affected by litter so do your bit to help avoid pollution by joining our coastal clean ups – and spreading the word about keeping beaches litter free! Half term fun at Puxton Park Love is in the air at Puxton Park this February Half-term. With daily entertainment and free face painting and cookie decorating, Puxton Park is the place to go. The children of Holly and Willow Class, Ditcheat School, enjoyed a busy day in Bristol, on the first day of the Spring term. It was a wonderful opportunity to kick start their topic on the city of Bristol. They had the opportunity to visit the Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol docks and visit a local mosque. Summer Residential Camps at Mill on the Brue Summer Residential Camps are being planned as you read. We are a family run Centre, which has been operating for over thirty five years, and think we know exactly what your child would like to be doing during the summer holidays. Alliance comments on new tax-free chidcare compensation statistics The Pre-school Learning Alliance has called on the Government to step up efforts to fix the Childcare Service website – which parents are required to use to apply for tax-free childcare and the 30 hour scheme – after Government responses to Parliamentary Questions tabled last week revealed that: ● HMRC has paid £966,666 to parents in lieu of tax-free childcare payments to date ● HMRC has paid £38,949 in 10 Parent Talk February 2018

compensation to parents for inconvenience and expenses incurred as a result of the scheme – for example, having to call the helpline ● HMRC has received 3,496 complaints from parents experiencing technical issues with the online system ● the tax-free childcare helpline has received 769,015 calls from parents as of 19 January. In August, the Government confirmed that parents who had experienced difficulties accessing the Childcare

Service system could apply for compensation. Commenting on the statistics, Neil Leitch, Chief Executive of the Pre-school Learning Alliance, said: “We know that HMRC is working to resolve the longrunning problems with the Childcare Service website, but this just isn’t good enough. “At the moment, applying for tax-free childcare and the 30 hours via the online system is a complete lottery – while

Confidence and creativity are at the heart of Hazlegrove Nursery and Pre-Prep where children have the opportunity to engage with expressive arts from the very early years. The creative process starts as soon as parents engage with the school. There are plenty of opportunities for imaginary play in the Nursery including Music and Dance every Tuesday morning and Hazlegrove Squirrels, the parent and toddler group which runs on Wednesday afternoon in term time. The group provides a relaxed opportunity to spend time experiencing the atmosphere of the Pre-Prep environment whilst children play, dance, sing or have fun in the woods at Forest School. World record breaking cyclist Mark Beaumont backs Sustrans Big Pedal 2018 World record breaking cyclist Mark Beaumont is calling on families to take up the challenge of ‘Around the world in 10 days’ as part of Sustrans Big Pedal 2018 - a UK-wide event to get more young people cycling and scooting to school. The Big Pedal 2018, which runs from Monday 23 April to Friday 4 May, will see pupils, parents and teachers across the UK leave their cars at home and get on their bikes and scooters for their journeys to and from school. Organised by walking and cycling charity Sustrans, and sponsored by Micro Scooters and Tonik, the Big Pedal is the largest competition of its kind in the UK. During the 10 days, participating primary and secondary schools will compete with one another to make the most journeys by bike or scooter. Endurance cyclist Mark Beaumont, who holds the Guinness World Record for cycling around the world in 78 days, is backing the Big Pedal 2018. After 18,000 miles on the road last summer, covering 240 miles a day and taking in 16

countries, Mark smashed the previous record by 44 days. The theme of this year’s Big Pedal is ‘Around the world in 10 days’, with pupils tracking their progress on a map of the world, learning about the countries Mark passed through on his trip. Mark said: “I’m delighted to be supporting the Big Pedal 2018. It’s a great initiative for getting more young people on their bikes and scooters, building their confidence and independence in a fun and engaging way. Xavier Brice, CEO at Sustrans, said: “At 1.6 miles the average primary school journey is a

distance that can be walked, scooted or cycled as an easy way of building more physical activity into our busy lives.” Last year nearly 1,700 schools registered to take part, with teachers, parents, siblings and pupils making more than a million journeys to school by bike or scooter. The Big Pedal 2018 is open to individual classes as well as whole schools, with hundreds of thousands of pupils expected to take part. For schools unable to take part in the main challenge there is also a one-day version, which can include cycling and scooting activities during the school day as well as on the journey to school. To celebrate the finale of the challenge there is the option to join a Superhero Fundraising Day. Schools and classes will be entered into daily prize draws for rewards, including bike stunt shows, if more than 15% of a school cycle or scoot on each day of the challenge.

Creativity at All Hallows starts with the nursery children

The transition process at Queen’s College Pre-Prep ensures the children are happy and confident with the next stage of their education. Our excellent and consistent communication with parents and series of transition events and activities from preschool to Reception and then from Year 2 into the Junior School ensures a seamless, relaxed and smooth move from one stage of education to the next. Our recent ISI inspection praised our transition focus and commented that: ‘Excellent communication between all parts of the school ensures each child has a seamless transfer between the different phases, and is ultimately prepared for the next stage of their lives’. At All Hallows, being creative is at the very heart of everything we do. By ensuring children are in touch with all that has the potential to inspire and excite them and by celebrating individuality, critical thinking, imaginative insights and fresh ideas, we are encouraging children to approach all that they do with a creative outlook. Nowhere is this more evident than in our innovative Creative Design Centre, as was recently demonstrated at our Creative Showcase. Our pupils were able to display their huge range of work including life-size sellotape statues, a multitude of flying cranes – a bird symbolised on our school logo – and some stunning photographic work. Under the inspiring leadership of Berin Nelson and Sacha Guppy (Head of Creative Design and Art respectively), the children are able to work with a wide range of media and are regularly using the state-of-the art facilities for coding, laser cutting and 3D printing alongside a wealth of traditional tools. It is no surprise that the Creative Design Centre is a favourite place to be for many. It is not just the older pupils who have the opportunity

with the school process and assists with a confident start to school. Our small classes, each with a teacher and teaching assistant, allow staff to really get to know every child, understand their specific learning needs and tailor the teaching accordingly. Our Year 2 pupils thoroughly enjoy the varied curriculum opportunities offered to them here at Queen’s Pre-Prep and have access to facilities across the whole of the Queen’s College site. Their regular PE lessons and weekly swimming lesson (in our indoor, heated pool) are taught by specialist, experienced Queen’s staff. This means that, when the children move from Pre-Prep to Year 3, they are already familiar with many of the Junior School staff and comfortable with the site. The opportunities to build relationships across the College, and use the facilities within the campus, enable the children to become comfortable with their move into Year 3 and beyond. Ensuring a relaxed, smooth and happy transfer from one stage of education to the next is

Top tips - How to inspire your children to pursue a career in tech By Ellie Trotter, Senior Product Manager at Amazon Development Centre, Scotland Build a robot A great starting point for demystifying tech for your children is by building a robot together. Go as simple as possible. There are lots of cool robot kits with built in features like remote controls, sounds, lights and collision detection. These definitely have their place (and my house is one of them!), but if you really want to demystify tech for your kids, strip it back to the most basic building blocks. This super simple Micro:bot pack from Technology Will Save Us is for kids aged 11 and up. You start with a cardboard box, add in a few wires, a couple of wheels and motors, and your robot is complete. Connect the included BBC micro:bit to a computer to program it by dragging and dropping blocks of code, and then you have a programmable robot that can move around your floor! Building something physical lets kids get their hands on something tactile in the real world, rather than programming a game which lives “inside the computer”. When I do this activity with primary school children, I love that they get to see there’s no magic involved. The children also get that sense of pride from having created something themselves. Join a code club A number of schools and community groups offer afterschool or weekend Code Clubs for kids. Code Club UK has over 6,200 clubs running across the UK, where young people aged 9-13 can build and share their ideas, learning along the way. versatile and easy to use, and can be loaded with children’s apps such as Swift Playgrounds from Apple, which teaches kids to code. Other great programming apps for kids include the LEGO Mindstorms app (available on Apple and Android) and Bee Bot (for iPad), which are both free. Get them thinking and get exploring Make your children curious by asking them questions. Why does jumping on the Stomp Rocket make the rocket fly? Why does the moon “change shape”? Why is it night time in Australia while we’re having our breakfast? Encourage them, from a young age, to question the world around them. Getting them to question processes behind ordinary things will get them thinking like inventors, rather than consumers. Some of my favourite kids books that do this are the Usborne lift-theflap Questions and Answers series. You can also inspire them by taking them out - for example to a science museum, or even bring them to work with you. My kids love going to the Glasgow Science Centre – any learning opportunity with loads of buttons to press is a winner! The Edinburgh Science Festival is also a wonderful way for kids to get their hands on science and this year runs from 31 March to 15 April. Bringing them to work with you will get them inspired about their future, and show them all the different career choices available to them. It’s always nice for your kids to see your place of work – so they can imagine where you are all day. Even more so if you can explain what happens there, and why it’s important. The offices at technology companies tend to be more laid back than some others, so if you work for a technology company, or someone you

know does, see if you can get your kids in for a tour. I recently took a group of primary school children around our Amazon Development Centre in Edinburgh. Apart from all the cool tech that they got to play with, they were particularly impressed with the office itself – we have sci-fi movie themed meeting rooms, standing desks and every engineer has either a giant curved monitor, or 2 large screens. These items are standard for a tech company, but not necessarily in other industries. But the thing they commented on most was how well Amazon appears to look after its employees – we have a lovely kitchen with table tennis and pool tables. Tech companies understand that sometimes you just need to step away from a problem for a few minutes, and a solution will present itself. Hence the provided distractions – they’re actually part of the working day around here! Keep it fun More than anything else, keep it fun! You don’t want to bore kids or give them information overload, but rather awaken the problem-solving parts of their brains. Even gaming is good. My 8 year old plays Mario Kart, and although I don’t encourage too much of it, there’s a lot of problem solving, planning and timing involved in playing the game - which isn’t a million miles away from programming. This is the same with games like Minecraft, which allows kids to plan, build and see the results.

Another wonderful way to get your kids coding is through Scratch or Scratch Junior (for younger kids aged 5-7). It’s a very simple interface where you drag and drop blocks of code to create your program or game and doesn’t require any typing which can be a struggle for younger children. With scratch, children can create their own interactive stories, then share and discuss their creations with one another. Invest in the right toys For younger children, take a look at what STEM toys are available. At home, we have a great mouse toy that you have to give commands to get to the cheese. It’s a form of programming, but ultimately they just see it as a fun toy – which of course keeps them interested and engaged. It’s even worth going down an age range to start off with. The mouse game is aimed at ages 5-9, so we bought it for our 5 year old but in fact it’s our 8 year old who gets the most out of it. Check out the STEM toys section on Amazon, where you can shop by age range, subject/ category or price - which makes it really easy to compare the options. Using apps to learn how programming works For older kids particularly, learning how to make computer games or apps makes coding both exciting and relevant. Allowing them to focus on their interests and use their imaginations will help to bring it alive. This process will also get them thinking about being inventors rather than consumers. Kids’ editions of tablet devices (there are a wide range available for all age groups on Amazon) offer greater robustness and are
