Dear Readers... Welcome back and already we’re in countdown mode until Half Term. With the beautiful September weather we had, it seems hard to believe that dark nights, Halloween parties and terror tours are on the agenda but spooky monsters are definitely out there. Castles, museums, gardens – you never know where they’re going to pop up; you might even find them in a zoo! If you’re into the more crafty side of Halloween, as opposed to the plain terrifying, there are some excellent pumpkin carving workshops at Monkton Elm, pumpkin trails at Cannington Gardens and even broomstick making at the Willows and Wetlands Workshop. Read on for further details – you never know what’s out there! Best wishes

Start your adventure Adopting two or three children may seem more challenging than adopting one but often brothers and sisters have a unique bond and look out for each other.

For sibling groups of children, more often than not, it is in their best interests to keep them together and not separate them for adoption. Finding parents for sibling groups of children is sometimes difficult and the children stay in care longer than a single child would. Kate and Ross, from

Somerset, adopted twin girls, aged 4, a few years ago. Ross said: “We knew from the start we wanted a complete family and didn’t want an only child. Our friends thought we were crazy! “We were approved to adopt in October 2011 and within ten days we were approached about the girls. Kate continued: “Their sibling bond has helped them settle, they support one another, play very well together but also fight! We believe that having two is

Somerset mum of two, Nicola Laing, has beaten the recession finding a way to have it all by working flexible hours and receiving a great income. She created this by grabbing the opportunity to be one of many mums across the UK building a successful business from home.

It was when looking for flexible work that she was introduced to an interesting company offering the chance to take control of her future. “Initially I was looking for a little extra income, however, now this brilliant company provides me with an amazing income working part time so I can spend tons of time with my boys and not have to check the bank balance before making

family decisions.” “I always knew money was not the answer to everything; however, this company has enabled me to create those special memories for my family that will last a lifetime.” “Having never had a business before, I had a lot to learn. But the company had excellent training so I was able to learn the ropes and found the personal development very rewarding too. The sense of independence and security it has given me is really quite life changing.” Forever Living is now expanding into Somerset and looking for honest and ethical people who would like to earn between £50 - £2000 per month working part time.

“Wow, Wow, Wow.

Everything is perfect. The hosts, the set up, the atmosphere, the farm, the facilities, the organisation.... Everything. We felt totally at ease and welcome and strangely at home, like old friends visiting a familiar haunt. Yet this was our first visit. If you only book one family holiday for the near or distant future book this one. Watch your children run around safely with a few new found mates feeding and attending to the animals, mucking out if they choose, exploring, clambering,

climbing, embracing. We took three of our brood at ages 2, 8 and 11. In no way should one holiday truly fulfil all three age groups for that amount of days. Yet that’s what’s happened. No whining, no bickering, just heads on pillows snoring by early evening as they dreamt of the days fun and adventures. Barbara and her friend Sandy are something else. Sincere in their love of the farm and its guests, they take time to make each child, tiny or pre teen, feel special and welcome and needed.” From a guest review on TripAdvisor

Halloween treat for all the family Trick or treat? The Walled Gardens of Cannington is a real treat for the whole family at Halloween. Over two days, the Gardens will be home to pumpkins ready to be carved, trails to be explored and fancy dress costumes to be spooked by! Children can run around (closely followed by the adults!) and discover the many areas of the Gardens, finding pumpkins on the trail and creating their own carvings.

The activities aren’t just for children though, at this very popular event adults can wander around the historic settings, set within a medieval priory in the heart of Cannington. It is said that a network of tunnels exist beneath the Gardens, leading to various spots in the village so that the nuns and nearby monks could meet in secret. Over the years many local stories have survived concerning ghostly visitations by nuns. There is also a tomb for Bishop Peter Bernadine Collingridge who died in 1829 located in one of the gardens, which adds to the ghostly feel at this time of year! Tickets to this extremely popular Halloween event cost £5 per child, accompanying adult per child, free, which includes entrance to the Gardens, drink of squash, a biscuit and a pumpkin (whilst stocks last)! To avoid disappointment, tickets can be purchased in advance from the Walled Gardens’ Gift Shop or online at store.bridgwater.ac.uk. We look forward to seeing you!

Birth of Christopher Wren

20 October,1632

- architect and astronomer Christopher Wren is best known as the architect of St. Paul’s Cathedral and other London churches, but his first love was science and mathematics.

Where was Wren born and educated?

Wren was born in 1632 in the village of East Knoyle in Wiltshire, where his father was Rector. Soon afterwards his father moved to Windsor, and young Christopher was sent to Westminster School in London. He showed an early talent for mathematics and went on to study at Oxford University.

astronomy

What were Wren’s early interests?

Wren always enjoyed inventing and making things. As a young man he constructed a pneumatic machine and a device for writing in the dark. He also made models of the Moon and the solar system. In 1657, when Wren was only twenty-five, he was appointed Professor of Astronomy at Gresham College, London. A group of scientists met there regularly to discuss their ideas. This group formed the core of what would later become the Royal Society. After several more years spent on scientific research, Wren became Professor of Astronomy at Oxford in 1661.

What happened to Wren’s family during the Civil War?

As staunch Royalists, Wren’s family suffered during the Civil War, which began when Wren himself was only ten. His uncle Matthew, the Bishop of Ely, was imprisoned in the Tower of London for eighteen years. The Restoration of the monarchy in 1660 brought new opportunities to those families loyal to the crown, and Wren was in a good position to benefit from this.

the Civil War How did Wren’s interest in architecture begin?

Wren’s interest in architecture developed from his study of physics and engineering. At a time when architecture was considered to be a part-time interest for wealthy and educated gentlemen, Wren was one of the few architects to have a sound knowledge of the structure of buildings.

Christopher Wren (163 2-1723). Engraved by W.H oll and published in The Gallery Of Portraits With Memoirs encyclop edia, United Kingdom, 183 7.

What was Wren’s first building?

The first building that Wren designed was a chapel for Pembroke College, Cambridge. It was commissioned in 1665 by his uncle, the Bishop of Ely. Around the same time he worked on a design for the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford. This building was Wren’s first opportunity to design a dome. To help him with this, he studied drawings of Michelangelo’s great dome at St. Peter’s in Rome.

St. Paul’s Cathedral What did Wren design in London?

A dramatic opportunity for Wren to design many buildings for London came when a fire broke out in Pudding Lane in the heart of the old city in September 1666. Many of the houses were made of timber and built very close together, so the fire spread rapidly. By the time the fire was put out, around 13,000 houses and seventy parish churches were destroyed.

WIN

the Great Fire

What happened after the Great Fire?

Christopher Wren, with several others, took on the task of surveying the extent of the damage of the Great Fire. Wren produced a plan for the city which would create new open spaces along the main thoroughfares. Although this plan could not be carried out completely, the King admired the design. The Rebuilding Act of 1667 took care of practical improvements such as the construction of wide streets, enabling Wren to concentrate on designing new churches to replace those that had been burnt down, including the design of the new St Paul’s Cathedral. This work occupied him for the next thirty years.

Who worked for Wren on these projects?

Wren wanted the best craftsmanship available. On the various building works he fostered a team of craftsmen, many of whom worked for him for the rest of their lives.

the Royal Observatory When was the Royal Observatory built?

In 1675, Wren received a commission from Charles II which must have been of special interest to him. The idea was to create a Royal Observatory for the use of John Flamsteed, who that year had been appointed as the first Astronomer Royal. The King hoped that a proper study of the moon and the stars would help to perfect navigation at sea. Using telescopes and other instruments in the new Observatory, the astronomers would record the moon’s position relative to certain stars at set times. This would enable navigators to fix their position at sea more accurately. The night sky would, in effect, become the sailor’s clock. It was hoped in this way to avoid the growing loss of life and ship’s cargoes in shipwrecks

Why did Wren design a hospital for sailors at Greenwich?

In 1682, Wren designed a Royal Hospital for soldiers at Chelsea. The idea of building a similar hospital at Greenwich for injured and disabled seamen, may have been that of King James II. As Admiral of the Fleet, he had seen much action at sea. However, nothing was done in his short reign, and it was left to Queen Mary to put the plan into action. The Hospital was finished in 1702, in the reign of Queen Anne.

When did Wren die?

In 1723, at the great age of ninety-one. His achievements during this long life are considerable. He was one of the first professional architects in this country to have a sound knowledge of engineering. He introduced the Baroque style to Britain, though he gave it a more restrained flavour than on the continent. His own view was that St. Paul’s was his masterpiece and his gravestone inside the cathedral has a Latin inscription which translated, reads:

If you seek my monument look around you.

‘Til debt do us part: millions of Brits hide debts, savings and incomes from partners Couples are keeping their financial affairs secret from each other, and failing to come clean with their other halves about debts, savings, investments and even how much they earn, according to new research from Prudential.

The survey, analysing attitudes to and conversations about money among co-habiting couples aged over 40, finds that one in eight have debts that they have not disclosed to their partners. The average value of these hidden outstanding debts is £7,800 per secret debtor. Women are slightly more likely than men to keep

quiet about their borrowing. Meanwhile, nearly one in five over-40s in relationships have secret savings and investments stashes worth an average of £20,800 . And more than a fifth do not know how much their partner has accrued in pension savings. Prudential also found that many couples fail to disclose their true earnings to each other, with 14 per cent admitting that their partners do not know how much they earn. Around a quarter of those who keep some or all of their earnings secret say that they do so to maintain their independence. Vince Smith-Hughes, re-

tirement income expert at Prudential, said: “Couples looking to secure their financial futures should be very wary of keeping elements of their finances secret from each other. The reasons for keeping quiet may seem perfectly valid, and coming clean may result in some awkward conversations, but it is important for couples to have a full understanding of their joint financial circumstances when planning for the future. “For example, couples who are keeping separate secret stashes of savings with the intention of funding their retirements could be missing out on vital pensions tax

relief. Alternatively, couples approaching retirement, unaware of their partner’s debts, could be in for a nasty shock if they haven’t been cleared when the time comes to give up work. “Ideally, a couple looking to secure the best possible income in retirement will have a conversation about the savings and investments they both hold. A further conversation with a professional financial adviser or retirement specialist should also help with the decisions that will need to be made when turning these savings and investments into retirement income.”

When asked how their secret debts arose, many of those with debts say that they have come about as a result of day-to-day life – 56 per cent cite general living costs as the main cause of their debts. However, nearly one in five attribute their secret debts to overspending due to previous relationship break-ups and other emotional upheavals. When it comes to secret savings stashes, there are interesting differences between men and women. Men are more likely to have secret savings and investments than women, while 24 per cent of female secret savers say they

are keeping the money hidden to provide financial security in the event of a break-up compared with 11 per cent of men. Three in 10 women will use the cash to help fund their retirement compared with one fifth of men. There are, however, often simple explanations for partners keeping money secrets from each other. Nearly one in four of those who don’t tell their partner the full story about their income are planning to use the cash to buy presents for their other half, while another 22 per cent admit to planning for a major purchase such as a dream holiday or new car.

The Taunton Academy provides students with a state-of-the-art educational facility, but so much more.

With leadership and management rated as ‘Good’ in their recently published Ofsted report, the school has just posted its best GCSE and A Level results, and is positive that its ‘rapid improvement in all areas’ makes it an excellent choice both for qualifications and a rounded education. With £11m invested in the buildings at The Taunton Academy, we are committed to providing a wide range of opportunities to ensure all our students make the most of their learning and participate fully in the Academy and community life. Boarding at Perrott Hill

At Perrott Hill boarding is a very popular option, particularly with those children who will go on to board at senior schools the length and breadth of the country.

Our caring, professional staff aim to make boarding fun, safe, rewarding and to provide many opportunities for the children to develop independence and maturity. It is a place where firm friendships are forged and where children are supported fully through emotional, physical and personal challenges. The welfare of the boarders is a priority and the school recognises that all the pupils are individuals who have their own personalities and needs. The school strives to meet these needs and to make the pupils feel happy and special.

We have superb House Parents who are supported by a dedicated boarding team; this means that care is both consistent and continuous. The concept of ‘family’ and family values is integral to boarding at Perrott Hill and pupils feel welcomed and very much ‘at home’. Boarders enjoy exeat weekends every three weeks; in between there are family Sundays when they may be taken to the nearby beach, Bristol Zoo, painting on Exmoor or to the local town for shopping, bowling or the cinema. There are also the massively popular activity weekends, with themes such as Circus Skills, Hallowe’en and Survival which take place twice a term.

If you would like to visit Perrott Hill our Autumn Term Open Mornings are being held on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th October 2014. Please call Susan Cleary on 01460 72051, email admissions@perrotthill.com or visit www.perrotthill.com.

Considering Sixth Form? Red Maids’ is the only school in Bristol to offer those heading for Sixth Form a choice of which course to study – A Levels or the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma.

In both cases, its students are excelling. Last summer’s IB results alone earned the school 7th place nationally (according to The Times) and the combined results of IB and A Levels won the school a coveted place in The Times Top 100 Independent Schools league table. The choice of subjects or courses can sometimes be difficult for students, even more so at present with the uncertainty about the future of AS Levels. One solution could be the A Levels or IB – Any Questions? evening taking place at Red

Maids’ on Monday 13 October. Open to girls from any school, visitors will hear the professional views and advice from the school’s Deputy Head – Academic, IB Co-ordinator and Sixth Form teachers. They will also hear directly from current A Level and IB students. An extensive range of subjects is available in both courses. Each offers added enrichment to students’ development and are equally valued by UK and overseas universities. You might say the proof is in the pudding - one Red Maids’ IB Diploma student, Milly Loveday from the Chew Valley is now studying Russian and French at UCL, with the award of the university’s Provost’s Excellence Scholarship in recognition of her outstanding exam score.

Creative Learning Centre

www.explorium.co.uk

Explorium, the Creative Learning Centre near Street, has recently launched their Inventors’ Studio which is open on Wednesdays from 3.30 to 5.30pm. This is a space where children have the opportunity to use their imagination and creativity and be hands-on designing, building, tinkering, problemsolving and innovating.

With the Royal Academy of Engineering calling for more exploratory learning in maths, science, computing and technology Explorium’s Inventors’ Studio provides the perfect environment for these skills to be nurtured and extended so children can start to think like engineers or inventors. “Parents may not naturally think of their children as inventors but the skills we foster at Explorium, the 4Cs, are transferable to any educational or career path they may follow,” says Julia Black, founder of Explorium.

Explorium’s 4Cs are Creativity, Critical Thinking, Communication and Collaboration and are the 21st century skills that children will need to master as the world changes rapidly around them. “Children are naturally creative and curious learners, who take risks and problem-solve and at Explorium, we can provide a safe, supportive and encouraging environment for them to use, develop and refine these natural and key attributes.” Explorium is currently running a project called Footprints exploring the technology of the foot with children designing a barefoot shoe which will be presented to a panel of industry experts in December. This is a fantastic learning opportunity with a very real world outcome, and if you’d like more information call 01458 274050 or email info@explorium.co.uk.

As many young children embark on their journey through the school years, they will face increasing pressure and expectations from peers to be connected to the world via mobile devices and the Internet as part of both their social lives and studies. Far removed from the experiences of their own schooldays, Dr. Amanda Gummer, founder of child development, play and tech advice website Fundamentally Children, urges parents to understand and embrace their technology as part of keeping children safe online. Young children are technatives and many preschool children will have access to technology in the home. The versatility of technology enables children’s learning to be much more bespoke and therefore more relevant, engaging and enjoyable. “Getting independent expert advice on apps, eSafety and managing screen time can help parents feel more in control of their children’s technology” explains Dr Gummer who provides tips when evaluating the pros and cons of the technology children engage with. Look for technology that

● allows personalisation children benefit when learning and play is targeted to them and they feel that they have control over aspects of it. ● encourages socialisationtechnology that encourages children to play together, communicate or compete will help promote social development. ● uses new technologies to enhance traditional play patterns - e.g. role play. ● widens access to play by

children with additional needs. promotes active play - technology that encourages children to move around rather than staying sedentary. Be careful with technology that

● has poor linking between on and offline play patterns. ● shoe-horns technology into toys and games that doesn’t improve play value or accessibility. ● has too narrow a focus on limited play patterns. ● are addictive (‘sticky’ games are good, addictive games with no tools for regulating time spent on screen-based play are bad).

Avoid

● the inclusion of technology where it reduces the flexibility and play value of a toy (over specified toys prevent children from developing problem solving and imagination skills) ● poorly designed games that will frustrate and confuse children. ● devices without appropriate parental controls. ● apps and connected games that enable access to inappropriate material. Dr Gummer is an experienced child development specialist who set up GoodToyGuide.com in 2012 which now sits under the Fundamentally Children banner, alongside the Good App Guide and a wealth of parenting and child development advice. Dr Gummer is actively encouraging parents to take time to understand the technology that their children are using and talk to them about it at a time when it is causing so much concern and confusion about safety and excessive screen time.

Children who eat breakfast regularly, particularly a high fibre cereal breakfast, had lower risk markers for type 2 diabetes (eg fasting insulin levels were lower) than those children who ate breakfast infrequently, according to a paper recently published.1

Family GP, Dr Paul Stillman and advisor to the Breakfast Cereal Information Service (BCIS) notes: “This was a study among 4,116 9–10 year old children attending 200 schools in London, Birmingham, and Leicester participating in the Child Heart and Health Study in England (CHASE), a study examining risk factors for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes in children of South Asian, black African-Caribbean, and white European origin. “The researchers measured the body composition of the study participants and the levels of insulin, glucose, and other markers of diabetes risk in fasting blood samples (blood taken from the children 8–10 hours after their last meal or drink). All the participants reported how often they ate breakfast; 2,004 children also completed a 24-hour dietary recall questionnaire. Seventy-four percent of the children reported that they ate breakfast every day, 11% and 9% reported that they ate breakfast most days and some days, respectively, whereas 6% reported that they rarely ate breakfast. “Children who ate breakfast every day had lower risk markers for type 2 diabetes (eg fasting insulin levels were lower) than those children who ate breakfast infrequently. In

particular, the children who ate a high fibre, cereal-based breakfast had lower insulin resistance than children who ate other types of breakfast such as low fibre or toastbased breakfasts. “Studies of this type are often associated with confounding factors that can reduce the strength of the findings. However, in this study the association between eating breakfast and having a favorable type 2 diabetes risk profile remained after allowing for differences in socioeconomic status, physical activity levels, and amount of body fat (adiposity). “These findings are very encouraging and suggest the need to conduct further trials to see whether altering the breakfast habits of children can alter their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. “This study suggests that if all the children in England who do not eat breakfast daily could be encouraged to do so, it might reduce population-wide fasting insulin levels by about 4%. Moreover, encouraging children to eat a high fibre breakfast, instead of a low fibre breakfast might reduce populationwide fasting insulin levels by 11%–12%. Persuading children to eat breakfast, particularly a high fibre breakfast cereal regularly, could contribute to reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. Breakfast cereals are a nutritious and convenient choice for breakfast as they contain a range of micronutrients. Choosing a high fibre breakfast cereal may offer additional benefit to health with regard to type 2 diabetes risk profile.”

year for UK residents: £25 for those who live abroad. The Adoption Pack includes a beautiful line drawing and an adoption certificate and you’ll also receive updates on the development and progress of the pony you have chosen over the following year. Ponies George, Charlie, Smartie and Rolo look forward to meeting you and to becoming part of your family! They live at the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust Centre, at Parke, Bovey Tracey in Devon. Visitors are welcome on Sunday afternoons, to groom and handle the ponies, find out all about them, follow their interesting lives, discover their true value and how important they are to the Dartmoor landscape. These characters have a vital role to play in demonstrating just how good Dartmoor ponies are as family pets and for riding, driving and conservation grazing: they are fundamental to the DPHT’s innovative education programme for young people

who have a range of disabilities and/or challenging behaviour. Some of the incredible achievements we have had with students have happened through their work with these loving, gentle, patient but tough little ponies. The DPHT Adoption Scheme raises money to pay as part of its work to ensure that the traditional type of Dartmoor pony does not disappear. Single-coloured with long

manes and tails, Dartmoor ponies still run wild and free on Dartmoor, but their numbers are in serious decline. If you are interested in adopting a Dartmoor Heritage Pony please look up our website www.dpht.co.uk or phone 01626 833234 If you simply wish to make a donation to assist with our work, please do get in touch – your support is greatly appreciated.
