Welcome back! The start of the school year is always a tiring time, adjusting to new classes, new schools and new routines which is why half term is always so welcome! With the lovely September sun we enjoyed, it’s hard to believe the clocks will soon be going back and that dark evenings will be here. If you’re pushing a buggy, there are some great buggi lights you can win with Hippychick, see p3 for details. Looking through this month’s issue you’ll see ….Halloween and a chance to spook yourself in zoos, haunted castles and garden trails or you can try some creative Halloween workshops and traditional pumpkin carving. Once again, we have a great choice of books and ‘Gruffalo crumble’ has some wonderful ideas for a Halloween meal along the lines of knobbly knees and roasted fox. Very tasty! best wishes Tamsin

School pounds from Riverford potatoes With Riverford’s new Veg Fund scheme, families can raise money for their school as they eat. A seasonal, 100% organic box of veg can inspire children to eat healthily and try new things. Fresh, colourful and full of variety, the veg in the box changes with the seasons and comes with weekly recipes. It’s an easy way for schools to raise funds and introduce children to healthy eating and where their food comes from. About the Veg Fund Once your school’s signed up, Riverford will donate £15 on your third veg box delivery. You’ll be eating healthily and the school gets more funds – it’s good for everyone.
Plus, Riverford also offers classroom visits where children can learn about vegetables and healthy eating in a fun and interactive way. Riverford has been growing organic veg since 1987, looking after the soil, wildlife and birds. They grow for flavour and freshness: the carrotiest carrots and potatoes like your grandad used to grow. Their 100% organic veg boxes were recently named the Observer Ethical Product of the Decade. Helping your family to eat well and raising money for the school at the same time – that’s really good food! You can find out more about the Veg Fund at www.riverford.co.uk/ vegfund or call 01823 218406
“Our girls love our veg box. They sort through deciding what we’ll eat first and what meals to make.
Sometimes much of it is eaten before any cooking occurs!” Leanne, Riverford customer

The new, interactive play area in the gardens of The Bishop’s Palace in Wells is now open for all to enjoy! “The Dragon’s Lair”, hidden in the Arboretum of the Palace Gardens, is a new natural play project which will introduce children to the stories of the Palace, including the legend of the Dragon and the stories of water at the Palace. The actual carved Dragon is part submerged into the ground and forms a subterranean play and imagination area, which will be perfect for storytelling! The Palace has trained some resident storytellers with the
aim to be able to engage visiting children at busy times with tall tales from history. Other features include the ‘dragon’s wings’ climbing structure which includes a tree pole jungle and carved scales, alongside dragon’s wings (climbing nets); and a magnificent pair of futuristic tree pods, reaching up into the ancient Arboretum trees and with the option of descending by fireman’s pole or a slide. The final elements are a fantastical waterwheel, complete with pumps and sluice gates, which will keep children busy pumping for hours, and a new story map designed to help children to navigate their way from the Drawbridge through
the Palace Gardens to the Lair. The Dragon’s Lair will have the same opening hours as the Palace & Gardens; 10am-6pm daily. This project has been
made possible with the help of Viridor Credits, the HLF Sharing Heritage grant and the Medlock Foundation, for which The Palace Trust is extremely grateful.

Halloween at Paignton Zoo You might think there are quite enough scary things at Paignton Zoo, what with all those slithering snakes and scuttling spiders and crocodiles with great big fangs. But at half term and Halloween it’s set to get a whole lot scarier… Halloween Horrors runs from 24th to 30th October. It’s a chance for you to take your own little monsters to Paignton Zoo for a truly spooktacular time! So what is there to do at Paignton Zoo? Lots! Take part in their Trick or Treat trail
and receive a pumpkin mask and a chocolate treat. It’s just £1.50 per person, sheets and chocolates available while stocks last. Or you could hop on board the ghost train for a freaky surprise ride. There are spooky animal talks about ugly bugs and things with sharp teeth – catch them at Crocodile Swamp and Investigate. And if you’re feeling peckish, not to mention brave, take part in the bug-eating challenge. Yes, bug-eating! Bug-eating could be the future… what flavour
would you like? If that doesn’t fill the hole, then pop in to the Zoo’s Island Restaurant and treat yourself to ghoulish snacks such as creepy cupcakes and pumpkin soup. On top of all that, Paignton Zoo has play areas, coffee shops, picnic lawns, free parking, lots of places to sit down and, of course, hundreds and hundreds of amazing animals to search out. Whether you want to be scared or just amazed by the world of plants and animals, pop along to Paignton Zoo this half term.

Children challenged Raceday at Wincanton raises funds for charity to carve ghoulish faces into pumpkins CHILDREN from Somerset can have a go at carving their best ghoulish faces into pumpkins when a garden centre’s Halloween workshops return this October. Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre is hosting pumpkin carving workshops for youngsters daily from October 26 until 31 from 10am until 1pm and 2pm until 4pm. Andrew Pitman, Store Manager at the award-winning, independent, family-run garden centre at Monkton Heathfield near Taunton, said: “Once again we are hosting our popular carving workshops for children. “They will take place in our veg area near the Pondside Café and youngsters can draw any design they like on their pumpkins and our staff will help them to carve it. We’re hoping to see lots of spooky faces. Youngsters will also be able to take their pumpkins home with them afterwards.”
The pumpkin carving workshops will cost £3.99 per child. “There will also be a pumpkin hunt taking place during the holidays. Children can pick up a pumpkin hunt form from reception and they will receive a gift if they find all the pumpkins.” The pumpkin hunt will cost £1 per child. Andrew added: “The workshops and pumpkin hunt are perfect for families looking to keep youngsters occupied during the half-term holidays. We hope lots of people come along to enjoy the activities.” The pumpkin carving workshops will take place daily from Wednesday, October 26

The second Combat Stress Families and Armed Forces Raceday will be held on 23rd October at Wincanton Racecourse. The aim of the event is to welcome everybody, particularly those within the Armed Forces, veterans and their families to the fantastic sport of horseracing. The raceday will be held during half term and families will be able to enjoy an action packed day of top class jump racing and plenty of entertainment, including a superheroes fancy dress competition. The course enclosure will be transformed into a playground provided by Avon Valley Adventure & Wildlife Park, for little superheroes with lots of FREE adventurous activities for the family to get involved in between the thrilling racing. Wincanton Racecourse has a host of food and drinks outlets with offers suitable for all the family. The generous support of those who attended the first fundraising day in 2014 helped to raise just over £50,000 for
Combat Stress, the Veterans’ Mental Health Charity. The charity is now supporting more than 5,900 veterans and their families, a greater number than at any time in its history. The youngest veteran is just 18 years old. Founded in 1919, the charity’s aim is to ensure veterans receive the right mental healthcare, in the right place, at the right time. Jo Hepburn, chairman of
Wincanton Racecourse, says: “Wincanton Racecourse is delighted to be able to support, for the second time, this fantastic charity. After the hugely successful event in 2014 there are high expectations of what could be achievable this year. It promises to be an excellent day.” Advanced tickets are available from just £16 for adults. Children aged 17 and under go free.

Geoffrey Chaucer, author of The Canterbury Tales, dies 25 October, 1400 'The Canterbury Tales' by Geoffrey Chaucer (c.1345-1400) was enormously popular in medieval England, with over 80 copies in existence from the 1500s. Its popularity may be due to the fact that the tales were written in Middle English, a language that developed after the Norman invasion, after which those in power would have spoken French. Chaucer was born in London, around 1345, into a well-connected family of wine-merchants. As a young teenager he was taken into an aristocratic household. Still in his teens, he fought in Edward III's army in France. During an attack on Rheims, Chaucer was taken prisoner, but released after a ransom was paid, in part by the king himself. By 1367, he had entered royal service under the patronage of the king's son, the powerful John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster. When the duke's wife died two years later, Chaucer composed the Book of the Duchess in her memory - his first known poem. For the rest of his life, Chaucer's fortunes were tied to the political intrigues of court life. While John of Gaunt's influence was in the ascendant he did well, obtaining generous pensions and lucrative administrative appointments, such as Comptroller of the Custom and Subsidy of Wools, Hides and Woodfells. When Edward III died in 1377, he was succeeded by his young grandson, Richard II. As the new king's uncle, John of Gaunt's authority grew stronger - much to the advantage of Chaucer, who reached the top of his public career when he became one of the two knights for the county of Kent in 1386. But a turbulent power struggle between John of Gaunt and Thomas of Woodstock, Duke of Gloucester would soon lead to a decline in Chaucer's circumstances. His last years were spent using his court connections to secure protection from his creditors as he waited for royal pensions to be paid. Chaucer died in 1400. What is 'The Canterbury Tales' about? Chaucer's long poem follows the journey of a group of pilgrims, 31 including Chaucer himself, from the Tabard Inn in Southwark to St Thomas à Becket's shrine at Canterbury Cathedral. The host at the inn suggests each pilgrim tell two tales on the way out and two on the way home to help

while away their time on the road. The best storyteller is to be rewarded with a free supper on their return. This literary device gives Chaucer the opportunity to paint a series of vivid word portraits of a cross-section of his society, from a knight and prioress, to a carpenter and cook; a much-married wife of Bath, to a bawdy miller an occupation regarded in Chaucer's day as shifty and dishonest. The tone of their tales ranges from pious to comic, Taken together, they offer a fascinating insight into English life during the late 14th century. Chaucer's original plan was for over 100 stories, but only 24 were completed, some of which had already been written for earlier works. Why was Chaucer important? Chaucer is credited with having set the style for Middle English literature. Continuous publication of the 'Canterbury Tales' since Chaucer's death, and the inspiration it has provided for other writers and artists, are testimony to the enduring appeal of his characters and their stories: proof that people's hopes and fears - and the English sense of humour - are little changed by six centuries of history.

The Ramsay family will be digging out their mixing bowls, rolling pins and cookie cutters to take each other on and see who can create the best ‘star bake’ as they put on their very own Bake it Better bake sale to help raise vital dough for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity. They are encouraging all amateur bakers to join them in creating tempting treats to sell in the office or at school, in a bid to raise money for the charity as part of the partnership between the Gordon and Tana Ramsay Foundation and Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity which raises funds to help the hospital provide world-class care for young patients and their families. Shapwick School is a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment where young people can achieve their potential, regardless of their individual difficulties. The school is situated in lovely surroundings and students can attend Shapwick as a boarder or a day pupil. As a CReSTed category ‘SP’ School, Shapwick specialises in the education of young people aged 8 – 18 years with dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and associated speech and language needs. Shapwick’s motto ‘The same road by different steps’ rings true in everything throughout the school. Shapwick provides specialist teachers and small classes. They employ a team of speech and language and occupational therapists who work in conjunction with the teachers to create a holistic approach where the emphasis is on developing the strengths of their students, whilst providing specialist support across the whole curriculum through a multisensory approach. Tailored support with therapy
is offered to help overcome individual weaknesses. Pupils are taught in small classes and are provided with a broad and balanced curriculum, sympathetic to the specific demands that dyslexia presents. The latest assistive technologies
are used to make learning fun and accessible. Pupils no longer feel different and as a result their selfesteem and confidence grows. Shapwick does not accept pupils with behavioural problems but can recommend alternatives.

Hazlegrove Pre-Prep make Address your work life the most of the freedom balance in National of independence Work Life Week The children at Hazlegrove Pre-Prep have had a wonderful start to the year enjoying the late summer weather out in the playground as well as in Forest School, tennis and games. The new digging pit complete with shiny red digger is a highlight! The joy of being an independent school means that our children are able to enjoy a curriculum that the teachers truly believe in. Essentially, at Hazlegrove Pre-Prep we have created the school week we would have enjoyed in our own childhood. The mornings are all about the basics of reading, writing and maths which are taught in small classes with experienced class teachers. Beyond this, the timetable is all about creating opportunities for the children to thrive whilst developing physically and emotionally as well as academically. Forest School introduces the natural world, the seasons and the creative joy of being really hands on in the outdoors. Dance and Drama are fun and creative, as well as great for improving confidence, self-
expression and co-ordination. Music is alive and kicking! With Mr Birch in charge, whether on the piano or with his guitar or ukulele in hand, every moment is one to be remembered. The Olympics inspired us all, particularly for those of us at Hazlegrove as we watched our former pupil Maddie Hinch perform wonders in the GB goal, playing for the gold-medal winning Ladies’ Hockey Team. The Pre-Prep
sports programme sees our children being given specialist coaching in all the basics throwing, catching, striking a ball, moving into space and teamwork. On top of that they enjoy specialist swimming and tennis coaching every week throughout the year. It is no surprise that they enjoy so much competitive success further up the school! Hazlegrove Pre-Prep children are happy, confident children.
October 3-7 marks "National Work Life Week", a time for both employers and employees to focus on wellbeing at work and work-life balance. A survey for the 'Modern Families Index 2016' found that parents continue to put in extra hours just to get their job done - in some cases working an additional ten hours a week. So think about taking a step away from your desk and towards a healthier, happier, longer life with Heart Research UK's Healthy Tip. Take Time Out With work deadlines, childcare and household chores tipping the work-life balance scale, take time out for you and your family. Ban your work phone on days off and steer clear of emails during your welldeserved downtime. Enjoy a good book, take a trip to your favourite destination or just spend some quality

time with yourself, your family and friends. However you like to relax, enjoy your days off and give your heart a wellearned rest from the stresses of working life. Move More In this age of cars and computers the average worker sits for ten hours a day. Get up, get moving and keep the blood flowing by staying physically active inside and out of work. Moving more can help keep your blood pressure and cholesterol levels healthy, control your weight and reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Enjoy a well-earned self-esteem boost, improved sleep quality and energy levels which will lead to improved concentration at work. The key is to start with small, manageable amounts then slowly increase the duration and intensity each time. Break for Lunch It's easy to fall into the trap
of lunching at your desk and before you know it, it's packing up time and you've spent all day sitting. Make the most of your lunch break by squeezing in a short walk or just a trip to the staff canteen. Getting up for a change of scenery will not only get the blood flowing but will help to reinvigorate you for the rest of your working day. Eating Well at Work Whether you bring a packed lunch or buy from the staff canteen, make heart healthy choices for your work lunch. Choose wholemeal bread for sandwiches and ditch creamy salad dressings for hearthealthy fats such as olive oil. Pick up a piece of fruit instead of a packet of crisps and ditch the morning coffee for a bottle of water. Small simple changes all add up, so for the sake of a healthy heart, it's #timetorebalance and take a step towards a healthier, happier, longer life.

King’s Hall School for Pupils Joining at Age 11 When it comes to the move to ‘big school’ at age 11, many parents assume that the best choice is to progress straight to a senior school that has an 11+ intake and runs all the way to 16 or 18. At King’s Schools, we have a different way of making this key transition. In our two-site model, pupils joining at 11 begin in the friendly atmosphere of King’s Hall School, where they find their feet before moving at 13 to our senior school, King’s College. King’s Hall School and King’s College are closely linked. From early on, pupils at King’s Hall School visit King’s College to use its excellent facilities and absorb its atmosphere. Later, the great majority of King’s Hall pupils move on to King’s College at 13. There, they are with their old friends, but they join other pupils from a wide range of schools, expanding their horizons and widening their peer group. As well as the benefits of gradual change from age 11 to 13, King’s Schools benefit from a two-site model. The facilities and approaches for each site

are age-appropriate to a greater degree than is possible on a single site. In terms of social development, the age range
from 11 to 18 is huge. By attending King’s Hall School from 11, pupils are able to grow and develop as individuals.

Failing five-a-day The five-a-day health message is failing and we are falling short of the latest guidance on fibre, according to a new report commissioned by Fruit Bowl®, the health-conscious food brand. Experts say it is time to rethink healthy-eating messages and look for fresh strategies to ensure children, in particular, eat their five-a-day and hit the fibre targets recommended by health watchdogs, the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition. A review published in the journal of Complete Nutrition suggests one simple step would be to swap a sugary snack for dried fruit or a fruitbased snack. Dr Emma Derbyshire, a public health nutritionist, mum and one of the report authors agrees: “Putting the new UK fibre guidance into practice will not be easy. This is why brands like Fruit Bowl have looked at how children in particular can increase their fibre and indeed their fruit and vegetable needs.
Tackling the fruit and fibre challenges The benefits of eating five-aday and more fibre are beyond doubt, but despite more than a decade of five-a-day campaigns, on average, 11 to 18-year-olds manage a mere three portions a day and only 10% of boys and 7% of girls are eating five servings of fruit or vegetables a day, data from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) shows. Fruit and vegetables are an important source of fibre, but a review by Dr Carrie Ruxton, published in the journal of Complete Nutrition, warns: “The five-a-day message is not resonating with parents.” She says: “It is time we acknowledged that the current strategies are not working. It’s not enough to keep repeating the same five-a-day mantra. Everyone knows about the health benefits of eating more fruit and vegetables, but that knowledge is not being translated into action.” Dr Ruxton believes NDNS data points to an easy way to
increase intakes of both fruit and vegetables and fibre. In some age groups, children get almost a quarter of their calories from so-called “discretionary foods” such as biscuits, confectionery, crisps and soft drinks. And she points out: “Something as simple as switching to dried fruit or a fruit-based snack with no added sugar and a natural source of fibre will increase intakes of fruit and fibre while reducing fat, salt and, added sugars.” In summary, Dr Emma Derbyshire adds: “We can no longer ignore the evidence of the NDNS and other goldstandard sources. It’s time to take a fresh look at five-a-day and find new ways to encourage consumption of more fruit and vegetables. “Parents want simple answers — and while that is rarely possible when it comes to diet and nutrition, there is one simple strategy that is undoubtedly a step in the right direction — and that is to swap just one bag of crisps or confectionary for a fibre-rich fruit-based snack.”

The Park is an inclusive school. We are proud to be non-selective and we welcome children of all abilities. Many families choose The Park School because of our highlyreputed pastoral care. We value diversity. Here children with additional needs are not regarded as having a learning difficulty, but rather as having a learning difference, and our small class sizes and high adult-pupil ratio allow for a highly individualized approach to learning. SEN support is provided both in class and discretely in small groups or 1-1. It is this balance, delivered at point of need, which has long been regarded as best practice and is greatly valued by the teachers, the families and, most importantly, by the children themselves. All discrete work is tailored to meet the individual needs of each child and is delivered by the same member of the Learning Support Team who provides the in class support. This way, the discrete learning support ties in closely
with what the children are learning in class and backs up their learning, rather than working in parallel with their class work. Because we are a “through” school, the same team supports our pupils with SEN on their journey
throughout the school. Transition between key stages and between the Junior and Senior Schools is smooth and stress-free as the children get to know the Learning Support Team very well indeed.
We can offer your child: • the freedom to learn through feeling safe, happy and valued • small class sizes, single year groups and personalised learning • the opportunity to discover their creative talents through the arts, drama and music • excellent coaching, superb facilities and competitive sports opportunities • the opportunity to develop a strong moral compass • fresh air every day • a fantastic home from home boarding environment run by inspirational staff. BOOK REVIEW
BookTrust, launches first ever Time to Read national campaign to encourage families to break out of their ‘bubbles’ New research reveals parents’ concern around lack of shared family time, as technology and time-squeezes cause family members to live separate lives under the same roof New research has been released by BookTrust, the UK’s largest children’s reading charity, to announce the launch of Time to Read, a national campaign which encourages families to read together more, even when children are ‘too old for a bedtime story’. The research shows that parents of primary school children worry about family members increasingly living in their own ‘bubbles’ as their children get older. They want to spend more time doing things together but admit they read with their children less and less as they age. Almost two thirds of parents surveyed are worried about family members spending too much time isolated within their own ‘bubbles’ in the home, with social media, technology, and school homework all cited as reasons why parents are spending less time interacting with their children than they would like. In addition, nearly nine in ten say they would like to do more shared activities in order to increase quality family time together. The study, which polled 2,000 parents of children 511, highlighted how these concerns appeared to grow as children get older, as just 53% of parents of 5 year olds said they were worried about their family ‘bubble’, compared to 72% of parents of 11 year olds. This is reflected in the amount of time parents spend reading with their children as they grow older; on average 86% of parents with a child age 5 read with them every day or every other day, but this falls to 38% of parents of 11 year olds. A 2015 study by BookTrust with Ipsos MORI supports these findings and suggests that the frequency of reading with children begins to drop off around age 5 or 6, with a noticeable reduction in the number of parents reading to their children every day or several times a week from age 7. Research from Egmont Publishing2 earlier this year also points to 7 as the age when children and parents start swapping their nightly reading habit for tech-based entertainment such as visiting YouTube or other social media channels. Many of those surveyed in the latest research from BookTrust said they spend less time reading with their child as they got older because they have begun to read on their own. However academic 18 Parent Talk October 2016
The study shows that parents are also aware of the many benefits of reading with their children; 65% stated that increased bonding and physical closeness with their child was the top benefit, followed by enjoying a shared experience and having fun together. With more than half of parents surveyed with children age 11 admitting that they spend less time talking to them as they have grown older, shared reading could be the perfect way to increase quality family time, open children up to new conversations and help burst the family ‘bubble’. Professor Peter Fonagy, head of the Research Department of Clinical, Educational and Health Psychology at UCL, and Chief Executive of the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families, said: “A strong, lasting bond between families and children is founded on shared interests, excitement, and wonder - all of which can be achieved by reading for pleasure, which opens doorways to safely explore new worlds and concepts that fire their imaginations. Children have a multitude of developmental needs that can all be served simultaneously by reading together with parents or carers they love and trust. The long term cognitive and emotional benefits are clear – reading together promotes optimal interpersonal, developmental and educational functioning in later life”. As part of the first Time to Read campaign, BookTrust will be giving a book to every reception age child across the country (that’s 700,000) – launching this year with Faber & Faber’s ‘Kitchen Disco’ by Clare Foges and Al Murphy. The BookTrust website will also host booklists for reluctant readers alongside tips on how to get your child loving books. These can be found at www.booktrust.org.uk/timetoread
research indicates that shared reading between parent and child benefits the emotional health and well-being of young children. This means families could be missing out on quality time spent together with books and the emotional benefits that go with this as their child gets older. Diana Gerald, BookTrust chief executive, comments: “When children get older and start to learn to read for themselves, it can be tempting for parents to step back and let them continue their reading adventures alone. However, research shows the enjoyment of reading, developed through shared reading time with parents or carers, has a significant positive impact on a wide range of life outcomes including social, personal, health & well-being and educational. “It is now widely acknowledged that children who enjoy reading will read more often and this helps them do better at school, even in subjects like Maths. Indeed, reading for pleasure regularly has more of an impact on a child’s educational achievement than having a parent with a degree. It is the combination of skills and a love of reading that enables children to achieve academically and in life. We know that this lifetime love of reading is sparked by reading together, and the shared adventures that books can offer well beyond the nursery school years”.
