two campuses, one community.

Thank You!

Dear Parish Episcopal School community,

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of students. Your contributions have allowed our school to continue to equip students with the intellectual skills and tenets of character they need to thrive in a world of unpredictability. Thank you for being committed to Parish and to its students!

As our top annual fundraising priority, Parish Fund impacts every part of our community - faculty and staff recruitment and retention, academic programming, technology, athletics, arts, the unique socio-economic diversity of our community, and more.

In addition to Parish Fund, we also raise critical funds through Gala, in partnership with Parents’ Association, and Ed Snyder Memorial Golf Tournament, in partnership with Athletic Booster Club. It’s exciting to watch as each of these events continue to grow in both participation and income generated. The opportunity for school communities to participate in such events is crucial to independent schools like ours as it allows us to keep tuition as low as possible, while remaining steadfast in our commitment to our educational and philosophical missions.

Last year was also special, thanks to several families who helped establish endowed funds to preserve our outstanding facilities, enrich the School’s curriculum, strengthen the financial assistance program and provide our dedicated faculty with competitive salaries and professional development opportunities to ensure continued educational excellence.

It is an honor to lead a school that is healthy and growing in all ways. I am grateful to each of the individuals, families, alumni and foundations who have and continue to contribute gifts to the School in order to directly and profoundly impact our students. Finally, I am inspired by our faculty who seek growth daily in their own practice so that the learners under their care will be the beneficiaries.

Sincerely,

“Arriving at one goal is the starting point of another” – John Dewey

This past school year brought many “firsts” to our Parish community – first TAPPS state championships for our boys basketball and girls lacrosse teams (and an unprecedented fifth consecutive state championship for our football team), our inaugural Steamroller Smackdown event brought together by our innovative and creative arts faculty and administration, and a first place finish in the high school division for our NASA Rover team (the first time to win first place in-person). We also welcomed our new Allen Meyer Family Head of School, Dr. Matt Rush, along with other new administrators, faculty and staff. Our community championed, supported, cheered and embraced all these milestones, showcasing once again how community defines the Parish experience.

We also had a remarkable year in philanthropic support, raising more than $4.6 million, including $1.3 million for our Parish Fund and Gala, and receiving a generous $1 million endowment gift for need-based scholarship support. In addition, we had hundreds of parent volunteers give more than 2,000 hours of their time to ensure that Parish students and faculty were supported in a variety of needed areas.

Our Parish community is truly one that answers the call for support, time and again. As we celebrate the impact this philanthropic support had on the 2023-2024 school year, we look forward to how this continued support will influence the next school year. We give our sincerest gratitude to all who gave of their time, talents and treasure to serve our greatest asset – our Parish students!

In gratitute,

STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL ACTIVITIES

Parish Episcopal School’s finances continued strong for the 2023-24 school year. From the time tuition rates were set in February 2023, we experienced several favorable events compared to our estimates at that time. The School’s enrollment for the 2023-24 academic year exceeded expectations, interest rates climbed adding interest income to our cash holdings, and we spent less on capital items due to funding by a generous donor. These favorable events greatly contributed to the generation of a surplus. Thus, we enter the 2024-25 school year in a favorable financial position, allowing us to be ready for any unforeseen challenges and giving us the capability to explore and be open to the opportunities that a new school year presents for our students and community.

2023-2024 ENDOWMENT REPORT

ANNUAL ENDOWMENT LETTER

SEPTEMBER 30, 2024

For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024, the return on the Parish Episcopal School Endowment Fund (the “Fund”) was 11.7 percent compared to 9.1 percent for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2023. The Fund distributed $750,450 toward the School’s operating budget in fiscal 2024. The Fund received approximately $2 million in cash donations and transfers from the School in fiscal 2024.

The purpose of the Fund is to provide liquidity in support of the School’s ongoing operations and to provide financial stability to the School. The Fund is governed by a nine-member Board of Directors (the “Endowment Board”) that is elected, on a rolling basis, to three-year terms. These directors offer a wide variety of professional skills that provide insight and direction regarding the Fund’s policies, strategies and investments. The Fund files an annual Form 990 reporting operating results and assets held, which are consolidated with the School’s assets for purposes of the annual audit.

The investment return is based on the necessity of focusing on long-term, risk adjusted returns with a pre-established range of investment assets’ portfolio limits. To that end, our investment funds are managed by Truist and the Episcopal Foundation of Dallas. The donated land, which sits in front of the School between Sigma Road and Midway Road, is also part of our endowment portfolio. It is currently used as a soccer field and provides space for future expansion of the Midway campus.

The Fund will make its annual distribution of approximately $790,000 in January 2025. Over the past 12 years, we have seen a steady rise in annual distributions, which have totaled $5.4 million. These distributions support our students, employees and the School community.

The chart below illustrates the allocation of the current investment portfolio.

As of June 30, 2023 Policy Range

Equity

We believe the growth of the Fund is strategically critical for the long-term success of the School. The new administration, the Endowment Board and the School’s Board of Trustees are working hard to plan for this growth. Thank you for your interest in the Fund. Please contact Carrie Burton, Director of Development (cburton@parish.org), if you have an interest in endowment giving or to learn how your gift may be used for the benefit of the School.

Sincerely,

ENDOWMENT 101 - HOW ENDOWMENTS WORK

• Establish: You create an endowment with a $50,000 or more gift known as the original principal. This is added to the Parish Endowment’s long-term investment pool.

• Growth: The original principal is maintained in perpetuity with a focus on long-term growth and appreciation. Your endowment will provide distributions to Parish Episcopal School forever.

• Distribute: Distributions are made annually to support Parish in the area you designated.

Why I give?

Over the years, we have given to Parish in many ways, because we believe in the power of a strong and vibrant school community that puts equal emphasis on academics, athletics and the arts, and also fosters a sense of belonging among the student and parent body.

We hope our financial contribution to the School helps to enhance the already impressive programming available to students and to create new opportunities and experiences. Our personal contributions of time allow us to stay connected with the community, share our own experiences and contribute in ways that benefit the School on a broader level. By supporting Parish, we are investing in a community that is playing an important role in the lives of our children, raising them as responsible global citizens as they prepare themselves for an ever - changing world.

Why I give?

We continue to give and serve Parish as we appreciate all the opportunities the School provides, allowing each of our children to explore their varied interests, whether in the classroom, on the stage or on the athletic field. Parish provides our children an environment that celebrates their individual strengths while challenging them to grow both inside and outside of their comfort zones. The opportunity to explore their passions and interests are what makes a school like Parish so important to us and why we choose to give and serve the Parish community.

†Hollye Fisk passed away in December 2023. Hollye and his family’s service to Parish reaches back to the early years of Parish Day School, and over the years, Hollye served as a member of the Board of Trustees and was on the Executive, Facilities, Advancement and Risk Committees. His gifts to the School, both monetary and otherwise, and his expertise in many areas, particularly legal, architecture, construction and facilities, bolstered the School as it grew, including playing a critical role in its expansion from Parish Day to Parish Episcopal School. For his many contributions to the School, Hollye was recognized and honored with the special designation of Board Emeritus in 2021. The Parish community is blessed to not only have benefited from Hollye’s many gifts, but to have known him for the generous and gracious servant leader that he was.

Why I give?

In August 2020, when our son, Jake, and our daughter Jordan started their time at Parish, it felt like a homecoming of sorts for our family because I attended Parish Day School for 3rd and 4th grade many (many!) years ago. Our youngest son, Jonah, joined his older siblings at Parish in August 2022. I have always looked back on my time at PDS fondly. The traditions that make up the fabric of Parish are deep and long-lasting - many of which I was thrilled to see still in place when attending chapel as a Parish parent. When we selected Parish for our children we knew we wanted to support the School, not just financially but also with our time and talents.

Jennifer and I believe that when you commit to a community, especially one that is nurturing your children’s growth, it’s important to be actively involved. That’s why I am always willing (and honored) to coach on many of the kids' Parish sports teams and why we were thrilled to be asked to serve as Parish Fund Lower School representatives for the 2023-24 school year, a role that allowed us to connect with current and incoming Parish families while contributing to the School’s mission. Jennifer has also been actively involved in Parish Fellowship for our kids and we are excited to participate in Parish's Buddy Family program for the 2024-25 school year, which is a wonderful way to ensure new families enjoy a smooth transition to the Parish community and all that it has to offer. We have otherwise been eager to help out wherever needed, from the lunchroom to a variety of school eventswe think it is imperative to give back to a very special place that has given so much to our family.

Our giving is a reflection of our gratitude and our desire to see Parish continue to thrive, ensuring that it remains a school where our children, and future generations can grow, learn and become thoughtful leaders and good global citizens.

IMPACT OF YOUR GIFT

Eclipse Day

Interdisciplinary learning + sySTEMs Booster Club

April 8 was an exciting day as hundreds of thousands of visitors flocked to the Metroplex to watch the total solar eclipse as it passed over Texas. To make it an even more special day, ParishSTEM and the sySTEMs Booster Club planned a full day of activities to help the Panther community celebrate the momentous occasion. After greeting students with “Eclipse” donut treats, parent volunteers and sySTEMs members scattered across both campuses into classrooms to help support teachers in eclipse-focused activities – circuit building, art projects, interactive eclipse demonstrations and more. The School's dining service SAGE also offered spacethemed lunch items to keep with the Solar theme. When it was time to move outside and experience the actual event together, sySTEMs provided solar eclipse glasses for a safe viewing experience during a school-wide Watch Party at both campuses.

Belonging & Inclusion – Global Blast returns

Parent volunteers have always been the heart and soul of our success at Parish. This year, their incredible dedication made several events truly unforgettable. Our Global Blast, held at both Midway and Hillcrest, was a shining example. With more than 70 enthusiastic parent volunteers contributing to cultural tables, performances and interactive exhibits, we celebrated unity, belonging and our rich diversity. Thanks to our amazing volunteers, who represented more than 20 cultures, these events became cherished memories for our entire community. We are deeply proud and grateful for their unwavering support and commitment.

Professional Development

Throughout the school year and into the summer, Parish teachers are afforded the ability to further their professional development through funds and grants made available to them through generous donations from the Parish community. Teachers attend conferences, workshops and webinars, and take part in a variety of other opportunities to learn new skills or curriculum, further their professional experience and, most importantly, bring what they learn or create to the classroom.

Many teachers are awarded Parish Excellence in Teaching Institute (PETI) grants each year. Teachers use these grants to align and further curriculum as well as build curriculum for new courses during the summer months. Upper School French teacher Isobel Betzer was able to expand her new French class through a PETI grant this summer, ensuring the new curriculum was able to be tailored for the students taking the course. The curriculum, which focuses on current events, business and service, includes an assortment of activities and projects, keeping her students engaged while studying something they might be passionate about. Isobel appreciated receiving the grant, saying “There is no way I would have time to build this curriculum during the school year in addition to my classes and preps!”

Middle School Humanities teacher, Rob Kowalski, and Director of The Gilman Study Phillip Page both worked on building-out study skills curriculums for Middle and Upper School students. Phillip said, “. . . the grant has allowed us the opportunity to bring faculty, administration and specialists together to create meaningful, relevant and important skill-based curriculum that ensures all students have acces [to these skills] in formats most appropriate for their growth as a learner.” Rob adds that they’ll be able “. . . to better serve the students and assist the faculty in the delivery of the information. This collaborative effort is the best kind of professional development as it benefits everyone.”

Professional Development

Upper School teacher, Kara Freeman, used her grant to work with Upper School Physics teachers to further explore how math teachers can help support our students in their understanding of Physics and its connections to the math classroom. The teachers worked on identifying and developing common language among the two disciplines that will hopefully aid in clarity and deepening understanding for students in both courses. Kara echoed Isobel in the difficulty in finding time to dive in on important cross-curricular conversations during the busy school year stating that “having the time and space [in the summer] to do so is invaluable in advancing the development of our courses, and therefore our students.”

Lower School teacher, Lauren Smyth, spent her summer, along with her teaching partner, Amy Kakacek, to extend her grammar lessons, gaining new strategies and resources to help students master grade-level grammar skills. Integrating these methods into her classroom allows for more comprehensive and engaging grammar instruction.

“As I enter my 19th year in education, having dedicated time for professional development is vital for my growth as an educator and for the academic success of the students at Parish, ensuring we continuously improve and adapt to meet their needs.”

We are grateful to our community for their recognition of this important financial support of our teachers as they strive year-round to bring new skills, innovative tools and curriculum enhancements to the classroom that, ultimately, expand the opportunities for our students!

Why I give?

Lisa and I continue to believe that Parish is the right learning and growing environment for all our children as they (hopefully) mature in their early education. What better way to not only participate in but meaningfully contribute to what will be 15 years of each of their young lives than to invest our time and resources. We have cherished the Parish community as much as every part of the School has embraced us and through our continued, active involvement we are optimistic that we can help foster the same welcoming environment for the School’s present and future families. Parish is truly set apart and through our time and efforts, we look forward to making sure that the Parish ecosystem continues to stand apart not just for the children today, but the children of Parish tomorrow as well.

RESTRICTED FUNDS

Sustainability

During the 2023-2024 school year, Hillcrest students bit off an exciting lunchtime initiative, continuing their commitment to conservation and recycling. Led by 1st grade teacher, Lindsey Ryan, the Hillcrest Green Team and Sustainability committee, working directly with Sage Dining Services as well as the Transfiguration Operations team led by Bracken Reese, implemented a program to compost all food waste and donate remaining, edible food.

With most undertakings of this kind, a program like this doesn’t just happen overnight; it’s been in the making since 2021 thanks to the support of Parish parent Kate Okolita (Grayson ’34 and Ashleigh ’36). Kate was a key partner with Lindsey in the early stages of planning and the Okolita family made a generous donation to set up a restricted fund at Parish for Hillcrest Sustainability. In the first phase of implementation in January 2023, the fund allowed the School to purchase reusable cutlery

and cups (eliminating plastic water bottles), and plates for teachers to build their lunches on. Additionally, the fund pays for services with Recycle Revolution, a non-landfill recycling and compost collection service, which is vital to this year’s phase two of the program.

To say that lunch has become another learning opportunity for Hillcrest students, in large thanks to the Okolita family, is an understatement. The Lower School team is looking forward to using the data collected on the amount of food students are composting, the decrease in food waste and the number of items being recycled to not only increase the students’ knowledge in sustainability and learning in other subjects but also help them establish a lifetime of environmentally conscious habits. This is truly a gift that keeps on giving!

Franklin C. Edwards - Author visit

Franklin C. Edwards, the author of "Franklin the Helper" children’s books, joined us at Parish to celebrate Black History Month, made possible by a generous donation by several Lower School parents. Franklin inspired us all by sharing about the C.R.O.W.N. Act and the importance of being proud of our hair and who we are. His visit was a heartwarming reminder of the power of self-acceptance and community support. We are deeply grateful to our parent supporters for bringing Franklin to our campuses and making this celebration truly special.

ESports

Established before the pandemic by a cohort of 11th grade students, Parish Esports was quite active for two years, playing in three major tournaments each year. The pandemic halted the team until the spring of 2021, when two freshmen brought it back. With more than 30 team members, the team competes year-round, streaming their competitions for the Parish community to watch.

After their son Harrison, a former Parish student, lost his battle with cancer, Courtney and Andrew Marcus wanted to make a donation to Parish in Harrison’s memory. Part of the Marcus’ donation went to the Parish Esports team, because of Harrison’s love of video games. The team was able to purchase gaming equipment and other upgrades for their space to allow their competitions to be more exciting and engaging for the players and those who cheer them on. This restricted gift made all the difference to the team and their ability to compete, while honoring a beloved member of our community.
