Great Courses, Great Activities…and a Great Value!

New for Summer 2011: Online Registration

Inspiring excellence is a notion that defines so much of the fall/winter/spring terms at Parker — and is also integral to Parker’s summer classes and related activities. From junior kindergarten through grade 12, Parker’s Summer Program offers an array of learning opportunities in the classroom and beyond. Be it at the Lower, Middle, or Upper School, the focus is on enrichment and advancement, keeping students’ brains in the fast lane during the summer months.

The Summer Program is delighted to advise that complete online registration is now available for the first time! Parker has retained the services and support of CampBrain, the pre-eminent school and camp management software company. We believe you will find the Summer Program’s new online registration convenient and user-friendly. (If you prefer, however, you may complete a paper registration. A registration form can be found at the end of this brochure for your use. You can make copies of this registration form for registering additional students.)

Those of us associated with the Summer Program understand that the general economy continues to recover only slowly. Accordingly, virtually every course and activity has had its tuition or fee reduced by 5% from last summer. Coupled with the “Early Bird” registration option, families can save up to 10% over last summer when registering!

Please review the information, courses, and related activities presented on the pages that follow. Should you have questions about the curriculum, the registration process, or the Parker Summer Program in general, please contact me directly in the Summer and Extended Programs Office, located on Parker’s Linda Vista campus. The Parker teaching faculty, coaching staff, and I look forward to providing a rewarding and fun learning experience for each and every student who joins us this summer.

2011 PARKER SUMMER PROGRAM

LOWER SCHOOL

Lower School Courses For all who have had the opportunity to visit or spend time on the Lower School campus located in Mission Hills, it is clear that this is a magical place. For summer 2011, some exciting courses and activities have been organized. At the junior and senior kindergarten levels, the morning-long Little Explorers is back once again. New for summer 2011, for 1st-5th grade students, several grade level-specific JumpStart courses are being offered. Student numbers will be kept small for all classes to ensure the best possible learning environment, so sign up soon! Also new this summer and as an alternative to our JumpStart classes, a number of stand-alone courses are available. Please see the course descriptions, dates, and times for all Lower School courses, appearing on pages 4-7. The Summer Fun afternoon program typically finds the children off-campus, involved in fun, safe, age-appropriate activities. The youngest kids may enjoy a variety of beach and aquatic adventures, games and crafts — all supervised closely by a veteran Parker staff. Older students (grades 3-5) may head for the beach or embark on field trips to local attractions like Soak City, Solid Rock Gym, Boomers and other destination points in and around San Diego. Regardless of age or grade level, the emphasis of Summer Fun is to have fun and learn about the many features and attactions that give San Diego its unique character.

“Thank you for the welcome extended to Emma during the summer math course she took. Although we were ‘guests’ at Parker, the School’s concern and thoughtfulness were evident from the first day and made us feel like a part of the Parker community.” IRIS HALPERN, 2010 PARKER SUMMER PROGRAM PARENT

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Day #2: Hike and explore the Grand Canyon from the North Rim. (Return for night in hotel in Kanab).

NEW!

The Grandest of Classrooms: The Grand Canyon, Lake Powell/Utah Canyons Adventure

Day #3: Head to Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Board shuttle boats headed for private camp on the shores of Lake Powell. Set up camp and provide introduction to kayaking. Explore slot canyons, kayak and swim in Lake Powell. (Night of tent camping).

INSTRUCTORS: LESLEy UNDERWOOD & GRAND CLASSROOM STAFF

This is a two-week life skills and outdoor adventure/field study course, with Week #1 spent on the Linda Vista campus prepping students for a once-in-a-lifetime wilderness experience. Working with Parker Middle School teacher Lesley Underwood, an accomplished outdoors enthusiast, students prepare for the adventure portion of the course to take place in the Grand Canyon/Lake Powell/Utah canyons region. Students learn about the unique Southwestern environment they are to visit, the individuals and groups who have inhabited these lands and the challenges faced to keep these special places pristine and unspoiled. Students come to understand the geology, biology and ecology of the areas, as well as researching and learning about the environmental challenges looming. They are prepared for all outdoor activities, even if they have never hiked, kayaked or camped.

Day #4: Another day of kayaking on Lake Powell, exploring different slot canyons, swimming and taking in a beautiful landscape. (Return for night of tent camping). Day #5: Break camp and board motor boats back to shore. Hike to Horseshoe Bend, explore the dunes at Coral Pink Sand Dunes. (Night back in hotel in Kanab). Day #6: Head to Zion National Park; hike up the Virgin River to Emerald Pools. Return to Las Vegas; board flight for San Diego. Open to rising 7th and 8th grade students, and rising 6th grade students with permission of the instructor.

DATES: JUNE 27-JULY 8 (M-F) TIMES: 8:00-11:00AM (WEEK #1) CC: MB1V TUITION: $2285.00 Course fee includes $2060.00 for Grand Classroom experience (all inclusive) and the Parker classroom instructional fee of $225.00.

The real adventure begins with Week #2! After a short flight to Las Vegas, Ms. Underwood and the students will be met by representatives of Grand Classroom at the airport and drive up as a group to Utah. Grand Classroom is one of the premier outdoor educational student travel groups in the country, based in Charlottesville, VA. Its guides lead thousands of students of all ages “into the wild” each year. Students come to grasp how a human presence impacts a unique environment — in the Grand Canyon, on Lake Powell and in the Utah canyons — and just as important, how to leave these environments undisturbed upon departure. Students become responsible adventurers, gain an appreciation for the outdoors, build self-confidence and come to understand the relevance of teamwork.

AFTERNOON PROGRAM

Lancer Camp INSTRUCTORS: SETH TUNICK & STAFF

After a morning of stretching the mind, it’s time for students to enjoy all that San Diego has to offer. Parker’s signature Lancer Camp samples the fun and sun that defines America’s Finest City. Heading to the beach, splashing in the surf, kayaking in Mission Bay, sliding at Soak City, climbing a wall, taking in a movie — the list is virtually endless. Lancer Camp provides closelysupervised, safe summer experiences for Middle School students that are always fun!

The student to Grand Classroom guide ratio is 7:1 on Lake Powell, 8:1 in the Utah canyons, maximizing student learning and ensuring group safety. Students from other schools may be entitled to a semester language credit, subject to approval of their school. This course enables students to work at their own pace and return to school better prepared to continue with their language study. For additional support, students may arrange face-to-face meetings with the VLL coordinator as necessary. Almost any foreign language is accessible through this course. (The Rosetta Stone Method is used for all language study.)

Note: Field trips to local museum exhibits, movie theaters, or ethnic restaurants may be incorporated into the curriculum as appropriate. Parker students must receive approval from the Foreign Language Department prior to enrolling. Course receives full year academic credit.

At the Middle School, Extended Care is offered only in the afternoon, from 3:30-5:30pm. Billing takes place at the end of Session I and Session II.

1. Go to Parker’s virtual bookstore at: http://bookstore.mbsdirect.net/francisparker.htm 2. Click on “Order My Books.” 3. The next page asks: “Are you using a Francis Parker School Voucher to pay for your order?” Select “No.”

Grades

4. Click on the word “Continue.” 5. The next page asks you to select the appropriate school term. Select “Summer School 2011” from the drop-down menu.

Grades will be entered and communicated by teachers and relayed to students at the end of each session for trimester and semester credit courses. Year-long courses will generate a grade report every two weeks.

6. Next, select Middle School or Upper School, as appropriate.

Lunch/Snacks Lunch is available from 11:45am-12:30pm for $5.00 on the Linda Vista campus for Middle and Upper School students. For those Middle or Upper School students who attend morning classes and then remain for afternoon activities, lunch is included in the tuition fee. There are also vending machines on the Linda Vista campus that dispense beverages.

7. Click on the word “Continue.” 8. A page will now appear that lists all Summer Program courses that require purchased materials. Select the course(s) for which the student has enrolled and continue with the ordering process. If a particular book is not listed, this indicates the instructor does not require the student to purchase from MBS Direct.

At the Mission Hills campus, lunch is included for all Lower School students who attend morning classes and then remain for afternoon activities. Otherwise, there is a $5.00 charge for students who wish to stay for lunch.

Please note: If your student is a full-time student at Francis Parker School and receives financial assistance for the purchase of books from MBS Direct during the regular school year, your MBS Direct voucher code is not applicable toward the purchase of books from MBS Direct for the 2011 Summer Program.

Transportation Based on recent past summers’ limited use, shuttle bus service between the Mission Hills and Linda Vista campuses has been discontinued.
