Welcome! Summer Programs Mission Statement Weaving together accomplished teachers and engaged students in fun and supportive learning environments that promote critical thinking, celebrate academic achievement, encourage personal reflection, and foster social and emotional growth, the Francis Parker School Summer Program seeks to inspire, challenge, empower and enrich young minds— in the classroom, in the arts and in athletics.

Program Overview The notion of “inspiring excellence”—a notion that defines so much of the fall/winter/spring terms at Parker—is integral to Francis Parker School’s summer classes and related activities. From junior kindergarten through grade 12, Parker’s Summer Program offers a wide array of learning opportunities in the classroom and beyond. Be it at the Lower School, the Middle School or the Upper School, the focus is on enrichment and advancement with the overarching mission of keeping students’ “brains in the fast lane” during the summer months. While a number of traditional courses remain the bedrock of a broad curriculum, we invite students and parents to consider some new and exciting additions for the coming summer. For example: Destination: Space Camp (with a scheduled trip to the Space Center in Huntsville, Alabama a part of the course) and Spanish Immersion at the Lower School; to a genealogy course entitled Who Do You Think You Are? and Survive: Self Defense Training at the Middle School; to Dancing Through San Diego: A Choreography Workshop and The Science of Superheroes at the Upper School. On the athletics/skills development side, Cheerleading Prep: Acrobatics, Gymnastics and Aerobics and Fencing: Learning Sword Skills have been added to an already extensive list of sports options. In total, 34 additional courses have been added to the Summer Program.

Please review the general information, courses and related activities presented on the pages that follow. To register for courses or activities, please find a 2010 Summer Program Registration Form at the end of this brochure for your use. (You may wish to make copies of this registration form for registering additional students.) Should you have any questions about the curriculum, the registration process or the Parker Summer Program in general, please contact me directly in the Summer and Extended Programs Office, located on the Linda Vista Campus of Francis Parker School.

Thank you. The entire Parker teaching and coaching staff and I look forward to providing the very best possible summer experience for each and every student who joins us this summer.

This coming summer, the Parker program features three separate sessions:

lower school courses

Lower School Courses For all who have had the opportunity to visit or spend time on the Lower School campus located in Mission Hills, it is clear that this is a magical place. For summer 2010, some unique learning programs have been developed by a remarkably innovative faculty. Under the direction of Letty Robinson and David Glassey, a child-centered program is presented. At the junior and senior kindergarten levels, “Little Explorers” is back once again. For 1st-5th grade students, an engaging morning program (“Sumer Sizzle”) offers a rotation of five distinct courses Session I (June 28-July 16) and again in Session II (July 19-August 6). The Summer Sizzle rotation includes reading, science, computers, Singapore math and art during Session I, and reading, science, “visual” poetry, woodshop and musical theatre during Session II. Students may prefer to sign up for “stand alone” courses that run the length of each morning, including Space Camp, Spanish Immersion and a pair of grade-specific “JumpStart” courses. The afternoons at the Lower School (“Summer Fun”) often find the children off-campus, involved in age-appropriate, fun

activities. The younger kids may enjoy a variety of beach and aquatics adventures, games and crafts — all supervised closely by a veteran Parker staff. The older students (grades 3-5) will also enjoy time at the beach in addition to field trips to local attractions like Soak City, Solid Rock Gym, Boomers and other destination points in and around San Diego. Regardless of age or grade level, the emphasis of Summer Fun is to indeed, have fun.

ALL-DAY PROGRAM

Little Explorers Program Instructors: Laurie Stall, Kym Farkas This activities-based, closely-supervised program is appropriate for incoming junior and senior kindergarten students. Each week of the three-week program is themebased and experiential, with an emphasis on providing the children with appropriate socializing skills as they enter the lower grades. Week #1’s signature activity includes a variety of daily field trips to local fun or cultural destinations, preceded by a “circle time/reading/lesson.” Weeks #2 and #3 are designated as “swim weeks,” with each morning offering a theme-based, group craft activity. The swimming lessons that follow are conducted at Noonan Pool and run Monday-Thursday. A school-prepared lunch is included prior to the start of the afternoon session. Afternoon activities may include some physical education, canyon walks, movies or additional reading activities. There is also scheduled rest time and a nutritious snack provided prior to the end of the session at 3:30 pm. Dates: June 28–July 16

Pre-Calculus “JumpStart” Instructor: Erin Feldman Planning on taking Pre-Calculus next year? Perhaps feeling a bit unsure of some of the concepts learned earlier in Algebra II? Have questions about learning those new concepts of Pre-Calculus? Want to keep using the math concepts learned the past academic year so as not to forget them over the summer? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then Pre-Calculus JumpStart is the class for you. This two-week class reviews key topics from Algebra II, as well as introduces new concepts to be learned in Pre-Calculus. A review of functions, quadratic equations, and logarithms is included. There will also be an introduction to Trigonometry, a key component in Pre-Calculus. (This is a non-credit course, yet offers students the opportunity to get a “jump start” and be better prepared to handle Pre-Calculus.)

2010 Summer Programs General Information REGISTRATION Registration for all courses and activities begins on Monday, April 12, 2010, at 8:00 am. All courses and activities are filled on a first come, first served basis!

Mission Hills Campus: With one of the secretaries in the Lower School office. Linda Vista Campus: With the receptionist, Monica Sawaya, in the reception area of the Students Services/Administration Building. Please note: A student will not be registered until both a completed registration form and the full tuition payment are received. A registration form may be accessed online (printable version) at www.francisparker.org/summer. There is also a registration form in the back of the 2010 Summer Programs catalogue that may be removed and completed. ATTENDANCE Due to the abbreviated length of the summer sessions, absences should be avoided, barring extenuating circumstances. For courses receiving credit, two (2) or more absences will prevent a student from fulfilling the terms of a course and warrant a “no-credit” status.

ATTIRE Student dress is intended to be in keeping with summer and fun—thus, cool, comfortable and casual at all times. We do ask that students exercise good judgment, however. Recommended attire for girls is blouses or polo shirts, slacks, shorts or simple dresses or skirts. For boys, sport or polo shirts, slacks or shorts. Jeans and nice t-shirts for both girls and boys are acceptable, but they should be neat and free of holes or tears.
