HEAD OF SCHOOL MESSAGE Dear Parker Families and Friends, Thank you for joining us for the 2015 Parker Gala - Soaring into the Second Century. Tonight, we come together as one community united by a single goal: to provide support for scholarships for our students and professional development for our faculty. Next year, over $4.5 million in financial assistance will be awarded to our students. Every year hundreds of thousands of dollars are invested in our faculty’s professional development. The monies raised by the Gala go directly to support these efforts. On behalf of the Francis Parker School community, I want to thank the Parents Association members for their unyielding support of our School. Our special thanks go to Gala Co-Chairs, Gayle Nuffer and Randie Lettington, and their team of volunteers for their tremendous preparation and our generous sponsors for making this wonderful event possible. And thanks to each of you for joining the effort. Together, we can make a difference for our students and faculty. Enjoy the celebration. All the best,

Kevin Yaley

ALUMNA SPEAKER BIO Caroline Watts ’06 Caroline started at Parker in seventh grade. Always an avid reader, she explored her love of literature at Parker and discovered new academic passions. After her introduction to economics as a senior, Caroline went on to earn her BA in Economics at Stanford, with a minor in creative writing. While at Stanford, she was on the debate team and coordinated a tutoring program at a charter middle school in East Palo Alto. Caroline started her career in the technology industry in San Francisco, initially as the eighteenth (and first female) employee at a technology startup called ReTargeter. At ReTargeter, she had the opportunity to build a team and manage multiple aspects of the marketing department from public relations to product marketing. In 2013, Caroline began a new role as Director of Marketing at a young advertising tech startup called iSocket. While at iSocket, Caroline developed the messaging around an innovative new advertising technology, working with leading clients such as CondÊ Nast, the Economist and the New York Times. Last November, iSocket was acquired. This past January, Caroline joined an even earlier-stage startup called RevJet based in Silicon Valley. Currently operating in stealth, RevJet will go to market later this year.

GALA CO-CHAIRS MESSAGE Welcome Parker Families and Friends! We are so pleased you joined us tonight here in historic Balboa Park to celebrate and support Francis Parker School as both institutions are Soaring into the Second Century. We all appreciate that Parker is a very special place. While we value the wonderful facilities and physical environment, the strength and uniqueness of Parker resides in the people. Your presence and contributions tonight ensure that our Parker community continues to soar by directly benefitting Parker students and faculty. Proceeds from tonight’s Gala will be used for two important purposes: to fund current-use student financial assistance and faculty professional development. Remarkable students and outstanding, committed faculty place Parker in a class by itself! We are so grateful for the generosity of our sponsors and donors who contributed to the Gala, as well as the many volunteers who helped this Gala take flight. It has been our pleasure to work side by side with each of you, and your contributions and efforts are truly appreciated! Thank you again and enjoy the evening!

TRAVELING NON-STOP Connecting a Francis Parker family to the San Diego Air and Space Museum, and beyond. On a hazy day in March of 1931, a small crowd, clad in fur-trimmed wool coats and felt fedoras, huddled on a makeshift landing strip on the outskirts of Quito, Ecuador. In the middle of a grassy field in this capital city 16 miles south of the equator, roughly 100 individuals waited. Anticipating the novel thrum of a single engine, they tilted their faces toward the heavens. Then, against the whitened midday sky, the unfamiliar sight appeared. Gliding towards them, a polished metal flying machine sputtered and yawed before bumping to its landing on the rough cut earth. Block capitals emblazoned the underside of the starboard wing bearing the novel craft’s triumphant name: “ECUADOR.” Greeted by hero’s welcome, an exhilarated and grinning pilot, Theodore Gildred, accompanied by his co-pilot, Dean Farran, emerged and leapt from their metal home for the previous 4,500 miles. The eager crowd pressed in to marvel at the daring young Americans and their alien contraption while rifle-toting soldiers maintained order. What began as a mission inspired by Charles Lindbergh’s epic 1927 flight, concluded with the “Ecuador” remaining in Quito as a gift to people of the Latin American country. The aircraft served in establishing the isolated nation’s first regular airmail service. Exactly 50 years later, Gildred’s son, Theodore E. Gildred, recreated his father’s historic flight in collaboration with the San Diego Air and Space Museum. Emulating his father’s goodwill gesture, at the conclusion of the 1981 flight, the “Ecuador II” was donated to the people of Ecuador, which helped them establish their own aviation museum. The story, however, began six years prior to the original flight to Quito, when Ted and his older brother Philip L. Gildred, Sr., arrived in San Diego in 1925. They began constructing the Fox Building, home to what is now Copley Symphony Hall, and developed a deep affinity for San Diego. The brothers put down roots and during the 1940’s and 1950’s, they enrolled their children (Lynne, Stuart, Theodore E. Gildred, Helen, George and Philip L. Gildred, Jr.,) in Francis Parker School. 38

TRAVELING NON-STOP Connecting a Francis Parker family to the San Diego Air and Space Museum, and beyond. A generation later, Philip L. Gildred, Jr., served as President of the Parker Board of Trustees while, for more than two decades, his wife and Parker alumna, Lyn Stephens Gildred, made her career at Francis Parker School. (Lyn’s sister and fellow alumna, Anne Stephens Vafis, also retired recently after many years as the beloved Lower School art teacher.) In the 1960’s through 1990’s, the second generation of Gildreds became educated at Parker. Elizabeth, Tom, Anne, Julie, Lewis, Theodore E. Gildred, III, Jennifer, Torrey and Stephen, attended as well. Most of them received their diplomas from Parker, and some were “lifers.” Represented in the current class of 2015, Margaret MacVean, will be the third generation of Gildred offspring graduating from Parker. In 2015, entering the San Diego Air and Space Museum, one passes through the Theodore Gildred Rotunda. Represented in that room is 90 years of history that weaves a tapestry of two epic aviation journeys, one abundant alumni family, and Francis Parker School as a vital thread in the ongoing story.
