FRANCIS PARKER SCHOOL REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY
2016-2017
thank you
This year we unified around four exciting fundraising campaigns—Annual Giving, Heart of Campus, and the Parents Association Day of Giving and Gala—keeping the student experience at the center of our efforts. We are grateful for your steadfast support of Parker and honored to share the 2016–2017 Report on Philanthropy with you, our trusted shareholders. Each year, we ensure that we are using your gifts wisely, and we honor your commitment to us by reporting on your investment. There are many numbers we watch closely to measure our progress. Our favorite and most important is 1,250 : the number of students who benefit from your support every day. As an independent school, it is up to us to determine the metrics that define our success. Whether it is our 100-percent college matriculation or our 96-percent annual retention of families, we are constantly aware of how our performance compares with our standards. Yet our focus is not solely on outcomes; it is on the process and the people. The present and future of the bespoke Parker experience guides us at every turn. Philanthropy makes the exceptional student experience possible. Your individual gifts and the School’s endowment enrich the student experience far more than any other financial resource, such as tuition, by providing access for students, enhancing programs in and outside the classroom, and elevating the learning environment. Thank you for making our students your philanthropic priority. We appreciate your loyalty and support.

YOUR IMPACT
ABOUT THE REPORT Francis Parker School is supported by families who understand that their giving ensures that Parker is able to provide each student with the best education possible. Every gift enhances the breadth, depth, and scope of the Parker educational program and each student’s individual academic journey. Because tuition alone does not cover the full cost of a Parker education, we ask every Parker community member to support our School by making a gift they are proud of. We are excited to honor families in the Campaign for Parker and Heart of Campus sections. These heroic efforts, starting in 2011, helped us to grow our endowment and achieve our 2013 strategic plan vision for the Linda Vista Campus. Donors recognized in the Annual Giving section made gifts between July 1, 2016, and June 30, 2017, in support of Parker’s endowment and current-use operating needs. This year, in tribute to individuals who have participated in annual giving for four (4) or more consecutive years, we established the Loyalty Club. Members received a special pin and their names are noted in this report with a symbol (¸). The true role models of the Loyalty Club—donors who have given for two or more decades— are given special recognition in the Cumulative Giving section, where we also have recognized members of the Quatrefoil Society. Deceased donors are noted with an asterisk (*), and the Anonymous name listing may recognize multiple people. The images designed for this report showcase our core values—students first, academic excellence, global perspective, strength of character, and inclusive community—and capture our mission. Threads of continuity weave these images together, reminding us that we are part of the Parker fabric—past, present, and future. Finally, we have made every effort to ensure the accuracy of this report. If you have questions about your donor recognition or would like more information about giving opportunities, please contact Shara Freeman Hoefel, Head of Advancement, at 858 / 569-7900. YOUR SUPPORT
YOUR IMPACT The Parker community is distinguished by the generosity and dedication of its parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty and staff, and friends. Parker recognizes the extraordinary commitment of the 1,540 donors whose gifts during the 2016–2017 fiscal year enhanced the School’s ability to provide an extraordinary student experience and advance its mission. The School’s financial discipline and award-winning governance help to ensure an exceptional education. While tuition is the largest contributor to revenue, it covers only 92 percent of the actual cost of a Parker education. It is the generosity of our community, captured in this report, that ensures the Parker experience for all of our students. Your philanthropy keeps Parker accessible to a broad range of families, and everyone is asked to contribute.

FRANCIS PARKER SCHOOL
CAMPAIGN for PARKER Campaigns, especially those that fund the endowment, provide the farthest-reaching possible support for the School. Endowment gifts last for decades, allowing Parker to cultivate a stable financial base and to make wise long-range investment decisions. Through the endowment, gifts large and small come together to propel greatness. A gift to an endowment campaign is a contribution to the future of Parker, helping to guarantee that generations of students and families will be able to find discovery, community, and advancement in this special place. Thank you to our Campaign for Parker leaders, Jeff Silberman ’75 and Robert Gleason, to the Campaign Steering Committee volunteers, and to our philanthropic heroes who committed and invested more than $9 million in the School’s endowment since 2011 and more than $6 million to the Heart of Campus since 2014.

HEART of CAMPUS The Heart of Campus, slated for completion in fall 2018, will provide the open, welcoming gateway that the Linda Vista Campus has long deserved. It will communicate Parker’s value of excellence and sense of community to students, parents, faculty and staff, alumni, and visitors alike, from the moment they arrive. In addition to creating an inviting bridge between the academic and athletic areas of Campus, the structure serves a dual purpose by setting the stage for Parker’s continued growth at the Middle and Upper School levels. The Heart of Campus is a project that will have both a direct and indirect effect on the School’s potential.

Unique gifts are defined as significant donations in support of targeted initiatives. Each year, Parker is extremely fortunate to work with donors and foundations that make specific current-use operating gifts. The School is able to successfully solicit grants due to the high giving participation of our Parker community: Your generosity inspires granting organizations to join you. In the 2016-2017 fiscal year, Parker received generous gifts totaling more than $294,000, which allowed the School to advance five key initiatives: upgrading equipment and spaces, increasing student access, enhancing the learning environment, deepening student learning experiences, and expanding programs. ADMISSIONS OUTREACH
JAZZ WORKSHOPS
POETRY WEEK
Parker established a partnership with The Mason Hirst Foundation to reduce barriers for families who wish to apply to Parker. The Foundation made an investment grant for the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 admissions seasons to underwrite the cost of application and assessment fees for families from historically underserved communities who wish to apply for admission to Parker’s Junior Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten classes. In 2016-2017, this grant helped to increase applications from families who might not apply to Parker, enhancing the School’s inclusive community by reducing costs associated with the admissions process.
Jeff ’75 and Karen Silberman have been champions of the Summer Jazz Workshop since its launch in December 2010, and their unwavering dedication continued this past summer. Because of their support, Parker was able to offer 20 scholarships to this workshop for middle and high school students who represent underserved communities, schools, or families. Additionally, the Silbermans made it possible for one nationally recognized jazz artist to spend a day with students in each week of the Workshop.
In February 2018, Parker will present an inaugural Poetry Week on the Linda Vista Campus for Middle and Upper School students. Due to the generous funding of the Vassiliadis Chair in English and additional support by Carol Vassiliadis, the School has arranged for former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins to appear as a special guest, reading his work for students and holding a Poetry Salon for the Parker community.
LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
A Parker family sponsored a pilot Parker-Rady School of Management collaborative program that took place during Parker’s interim week. The two schools worked together to present an Entrepreneurship and Innovation course designed by the Rady School of Management, which is part of the University of California, San Diego. The five-day course, held on campus at UCSD, included lectures from Rady faculty and startup founders, tours of UCSD facilities such as CalIT2, seminars on presentation and pitching skills, and an online entrepreneur simulation.
CAMPUS PRESERVATION The Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation invested in the restoration and preservation of Parker’s historic Mission Hills Campus.
EQUIPMENT UPGRADE The robotics program received a generous gift from a Parker family to replace its Computer Numerical Control mill machine. This workhorse piece of equipment manufactures the championship robots for the Parker robotics team, known as W.A.R. Lords (We Are Robot Lords).
OUTDOOR COURT The newly built outdoor court, located next to Kidd-Wohlford Field behind the field house on the Linda Vista Campus, opened to support a variety of physical-education activities. A gift from a Parker family supplied the special Nike Grind™ flooring that was installed on top of the concrete floor to maximize student safety and athletic performance.
The Gooding Family Academic Resource Center (ARC), formally the Learning Center, received a gift from Terry Gooding and the Gooding Family Foundation to support the purchase of necessary tools and materials to elevate the learning environment. The gift provided supplies and materials to boost students’ learning efficiency, help with individualized learning instruction outside the classroom, improve the flow of information from teachers to students, and support different learning and work styles.
PLAY SPACE The Lower School playground was expanded to include more turf play space. The funding for this project represented a collaboration among the School, Christopher and Brooke Garcia, and two anonymous Lower School families. The turf materials include sand and encapsulated cork infill, which lower the temperature of the playing surface and increase the cushioning of the turf.

LIPPITT AWARD
DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD
In 1990, the Board of Trustees created the Henry F. Lippitt II ’29 Award to recognize his work as a trustee by honoring individuals who give similar outstanding service to the School. The Lippitt Award is Parker’s highest honor given to an adult. The recipient is an individual whose special contributions have made and will continue to make a major, positive difference—on and beyond our Campuses—in both the quality of education and the health of society.
The Francis Parker School Distinguished Alumni Award is presented to an alumnus/a who embodies the ideals of intellect, initiative, and social responsibility, which are the very essence of a Parker education. This person is someone who has demonstrated remarkable leadership in his/her field of endeavor, attained local and/or national recognition, and has made an outstanding contribution to the country, community, or School.

YOUR SUPPORT Annual giving provides critical resources for Parker—a steady stream that keeps the School moving. Your philanthropic support makes up most of the difference between the actual cost of educating each child and what is covered by tuition. Annual gifts supplement funding for technology and instructional materials, provide faculty with the best resources available, bolster financial assistance for qualified students, and ensure that the Parker experience is distinctive. While families have children attending Parker, we ask them to place the School among their philanthropic priorities. Prospective families and foundations look favorably upon high givingparticipation rates from all constituencies because this demonstrates broad-based confidence in the School and its mission. During this giving season, which runs through June 30, 2018, you will have the chance to proudly support the School through one or more of three primary giving opportunities: annual giving for the endowment, which is gratefully received throughout the fiscal year, and the Parents Association’s Day of Giving (November 28, 2017) and Gala (May 5, 2018). You can take advantage of current tax-year benefits by making a contribution by December 31, 2017. Unlike tuition, gifts to support Parker are fully tax-deductible.
