HEAD OF SCHOOL MESSAGE Aloha! Thank you for attending the Parents Association 36th Annual Gala – Aloha Island Luau. Tonight, we join together as one community united by a single goal: To ensure that current and future students are afforded a Parker education. In 2018-2019, over $5 million in financial assistance will be awarded to over 20 percent of our students, and every dollar raised tonight goes directly to support our students. On behalf of all of us at Parker, my sincere thanks for your commitment to our students, our School, and our future. I extend my personal thanks to the Parents Association President, Donna Sheridan and all its members for their unyielding support, and to our generous sponsors for underwriting tonight’s celebration. In particular, I wish to thank our Gala Chairs, David Gray and Marilyn Tobin, and their team of dedicated volunteers for bringing Aloha Island Luau to life. The vision, leadership, and investment of time given by David and Marilyn were extraordinary. We are all extremely grateful for their hard work over the past many months. Special thanks to our speaker, Nargis Alizada Khan ’08, for sharing her remarkable story of hope, inspiration, and achievement. Have a wonderful evening, and, once again, thank you for your support. Mahalo - many, many thanks,

Kevin Yaley, Head of School

co-chairs’ MESSAGE E komo mai a mahalo, welcome to the Aloha Island Luau and thank you for your amazing support. Our vision was to capture the spirit of Aloha and we are extremely grateful to our generous sponsors and honorary committee members who donated $230,500 to fully underwrite tonight’s Gala. That means when you raise your paddle tonight, every dollar you pledge is an investment in student scholarships. We would like to extend a big mahalo to our truly dedicated and hard working Gala committee members. Our committee has devoted countless hours in preparation for tonight’s event and it has been a honor to work with this group of talented people. In the Advancement office, we would like to say mahalo to Shara Freeman Hoefel for her guidance and encouragement. Mahalo to Kristie Diamond and Erik Keskinen for their leadership and zany give-it-your-all dedication to the Day of Giving campaign earlier in the academic year. The Gala is made up of three big events: the Day of Giving to support our faculty, and Movie Night and Gala party to support students. The Day of Giving and Movie Night collectively raised more than $410,000 from over 630 parent donors – breaking all previous records and showing the collective impact of the community. Mr. Yaley likes to talk (a lot) about what makes Parker special and, spoiler alert, it’s the people, it’s about the family that goes beyond the traditional family borders, and it’s about a sense of community. And, in Hawaii, it’s called ohana. So let’s celebrate the Parker ohana and extend the borders of the Parker community. We ask you to join us tonight in raising your paddle and showing your support for Parker, and most important, relax… you’re on island time. Mahalo Nui Loa – Many, many thanks!

FUND-A-SCHOLARSHIP Did you know that approximately 20 percent of Parker students receive financial assistance? The opportunity for qualified students to attend Parker should not be limited by financial constraints. Because of your support, Parker is able to commit over $5 million or 15 percent of the School’s tuition revenue in the upcoming 2018-2019 academic year to deserving students. Need-based financial assistance awards range from $500 to over $29,000 per year and are awarded to students in JK – Grade 12. One hundred percent of financial assistance recipients who graduate from Parker matriculate at four-year colleges and universities. Parker also guarantees that recipients are able to participate in one global trip during Middle School and one during Upper School, as well as take advantage of the full Parker experience. Please raise your paddle to demonstrate your belief in Parker’s top priority— our students!

VISION. PERSEVERANCE. 100 YEARS AND COUNTING.

FEATURED SPEAKER NARGIS ALIZADA KHAN ’08

Sponsored by Professional Maintenance Systems

Nargis Alizada Khan ’08 is a refugee from Kabul, Afghanistan. She and her family settled in Tucson, Arizona in March 2001 before moving to San Diego the following year. It was in San Diego that Nargis was introduced to an after school photography program, the AjA Project, a nonprofit organization providing photographybased programming to transform the lives of youth and communities. A few of Nargis’s photos were displayed at the National Geographic Museum in 2003, where she, alongside United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) ambassadors, spoke about her refugee experience on World Refugee Day. Through this experience, she was introduced to Walden Media’s Vice President of Education and Professional Development, Randy Testa, who, partnered with the UNHCR when making the film “I am David.” The film’s central objective was to raise awareness for the 43.7 million people around the globe who currently live as refugees. As a supplement to the film, Walden Media created multidisciplinary resources in English/Language Arts, Social Studies, Visual Arts, and Character Education emphasizing ways that educators and students can respond to the refugee crisis around the world. As part of their initiative, Nargis traveled around the country to speak of her experience as a refugee fleeing religious persecution and ethnic cleansing. During her travels, she met staff from Parker and was later offered a scholarship to attend the Upper School. At Parker, Nargis was a member of the softball team and spent many days after school in the Learning Center (now the Gooding Academic Resource Center) to receive help with her school work. Nargis went on to attend Fairfield University, a Jesuit Catholic University in Fairfield, Connecticut, where she was an active student and founded the Muslim Student Association. With the rise of Islamophobia, Nargis worked alongside campus ministry to introduce Islamic Chaplaincy to Fairfield University and helped bring in their first Muslim Chaplain intern to create a better campus environment for Muslim students. She had no

16

idea this project would introduce her to the world of chaplaincy, a career she chose to chase many years later. She is now finishing The Islamic Chaplaincy Program at Hartford Seminary in Hartford, Connecticut and will graduate with a Masters of Arts in Religious Studies with a focused area of study in Islamic Studies and Muslim/Christian Relations. The program also includes a Graduate Certificate in Islamic Chaplaincy focusing on Islamic practices of ministry. Nargis returned to her undergraduate alma mater to apply for the Muslim Chaplain internship position in 2015, and in 2016, Fairfield University hired her as the first paid Muslim Chaplain to join their Campus Ministry team. Today, Nargis is in her third year at Fairfield University making sure students feel supported on campus and helping them to thrive, live, and learn. She also serves as mentor for Fairfield University’s Service for Justice Residential College, a sophomore living and learning community rooted in social justice and service that explores the questions of identity development, positive sense of self, and social responsibility. Nargis spends time at the Office of Student Diversity and Multicultural Affairs where she helps coordinate appropriate events and programs for students to explore different cultures, faiths, and learning opportunities around campus.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION Aloha Island Luau Entry Only prepaid reservation holders will be admitted to the Aloha Island Luau. No registration at the door. Auction Item All auction item descriptions are based on information provided by the donor. Francis Parker School (Parker) has made every effort to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the information. Neither Parker nor its Parents Association (PA) are responsible for the accuracy of the information or for the quality of services or merchandise delivered. All contractual and legal agreements concerning items auctioned are entirely between the buyer and provider of the services or merchandise. Each item is sold “as is without any warranty (expressed or implied) and without representation as to the actual value of the item by Parker. For charitable tax deductions, please consult with your tax professional as to the deductibility of auction items. Each item has a value and it is stated in the program or on the Greater Giving receipt supplied to each registered bidder. A few auction items are listed as priceless, as each auction full-package experience is hard to quantify. We have asked the donor to do his or her best to determine the Fair Market Value (FMV). The FMV is available online at https:// luaugala.ggo.bid . If you have questions about auction items, please contact the volunteers at pa-galaauction@francisparker.org. Live Auction Procedures Bid numbers are printed on individual cards and will be at your table. To bid on live auction items, visibly wave your card. Continue to hold your card in view of the auctioneer until he calls your bid number. If you are the highest bidder, the auctioneer will announce your bid number as the winner. An auction volunteer will record your bid number on a confirmation sheet. Fund-a-Scholarship bids may require a signature to verify the amount. The confirmation sheet will be delivered to check-out where it will be posted to your bill.

Liability Neither Parker, nor any individual directly or indirectly involved in the planning or execution of Aloha Island Luau, assumes any responsibility for the description, authenticity or condition of any auction item. Further, no warranty or guarantee, express or implied, is made by Parker with respect to any auction item. By participating in the auction and placing a bid, all bidders expressly release and discharge Parker, its trustees, officers, employees, volunteers and agents from any and all liability, claims, demands, actions or rights of action, which are related to, arise out of, or are in any way connected with an auction item. Payment Procedures and Check-out Parker accepts credit cards, cash, and checks. Auction items must be paid in full and can be picked-up at check-out. Event and Opportunity Drawing Tickets None of the event or opportunity drawing ticket costs are recognized as a gift to Parker. The event ticket cost tax-deduction is based off the FMV, which is the estimate of how much the evening would cost if someone were to purchase a similar experience at a commercial establishment. The FMV for both regular and advance ticket prices are $160 for Sponsors, $150 for VIP and $110 for General. Please consult with your tax professional as to the deductibility of ticket(s). Receipts Receipts detailing purchases will be generated from the Greater Giving auction software and e-mailed within one month following the Aloha Island Luau. The Advancement Office will also mail an official gift receipt and acknowledgment letter for outright gifts in support Fund-a-Scholarship and School auction items (i.e., parking space, promotion packages) in which the winning bid is $10,000 or more.

Program The Gala volunteers have made every effort to ensure the accuracy of the information in this program. The date-stamp of the printed information is April 1, 2018. What to Wear The Luau theme calls for a very relaxed, island style. Aloha shirts, linen or light slacks, bright floral dresses. Think Tommy Bahama casual, Reyn Spooner chic, Jams World meets Hilo Hattie and Don Ho. Dinner will be held on the Lancer Lawn, so a caution to spiky heels. Drinks All guests receive a welcome cocktail upon arrival at check-in. All non-alcoholic beverages and the rum tasting are free. Sponsors and Honorary Committee ticket holders receive free drinks (cocktails and beer) all night and premium wine with dinner. Big Kahuna VIP ticket holders receive two free drink (cocktails and beer) tickets, free premium wine with dinner, and free drinks in the ParkerSpirit.com Kamehameha Tiki Lounge. General Admission ticket holders receive free wine with dinner and can purchase drinks (cocktails and beer) throughout the night. Rideshares (i.e., Uber or Lyft) are encouraged and may drop-off and pick-up next to the flagpole - the pick-up/drop-off circle.

Parking Please refer to the Aloha Island Luau Map. Sponsors, Honorary Committee, and VIP ticket holders have valet parking and a parking pass will be sent to you directly. Valet parking next to the flagpole - the pick-up/drop-off circle. Cars must be picked up by 11:30 pm at the valet. If you are not leaving before 11:30 pm, we ask that you pick up your keys by 11 pm at the valet. If you did not receive your parking pass before the event, please contact pa-galagg@francisparker.org. General Admission ticket holders may park in the San Diego County Office of Education parking lot west of Francis Parker School. Please look for signs marking this entrance. Note that the pedestrian gate in the parking lot will NOT be open. Proxy Bidding We do accept proxy bids from non-attendees. For more information, contact pa-galachair@ francisparker.org. Note of Gratitude The School is grateful to its volunteers for the countless hours they have poured into ensuring the success of Aloha Island Luau. Thank you for your love and devotion to the Parker family. Questions For questions after the event, please contact the Head of Advancement at 858-569-7900.
