PARKER PARENTS
PARENTS ASSOCIATION NOTEBOOK 2017-2018
PARKER'S WINDOW, LANCER AND COLORS
Parker's window, a distinctive barbed quatrefoil design, is a defining feature of the Mission Hills Campus' Szekely Auditorium (pictured on cover) and was the inspiration for the School's logo and tagline, “as far as the mind can see.
Parker's fearless Lancer, introduced in the late 1960s when the Upper School was reestablished, has been reimagined to capture the sprit of Parker.
Parker's colors are brown, gold and teal. The two original colors, brown and gold, were taken from the brown terraces and canyons with the yellow violets, our School flower. The teal color was added as a tertiary color in 2012 during the School's centennial year. By incorporating a blue tone, we truly look toward the limitless sky, "as far as the mind can see."
as far as the mind can see For questions about the School's logos or for permission to use them for School purposes, please contact the Communications Office by email to communications@francisparker.org.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Parents, It is my pleasure to welcome you to a new school year at Parker. All of us share in your excitement about the upcoming school year and hope to exceed all of your expectations. From the start, our commitment to your children— our students—is to inspire academic excellence, build strength of character and encourage global citizenship, preparing each student for a future in which they will make a meaningful difference in the world. However, we cannot reach these heights without the shared vision and commitment of each of our families. To this end, I ask the following of each Parker parent: Be Our Partner: Over the course of your child’s journey at Parker, we will work together to support, guide and motivate your child to seize various opportunities and discover new possibilities. Be Engaged: One of Parker’s hallmarks is the commitment to building and sustaining a genuine community that provides our students a home away from home. Our goal is for every family to participate fully in the life of the School. We hope you will become an active volunteer with the Parents Association. Prioritize Parker: Schools with healthy endowments and strong financial support are able to significantly enrich the student educational experience. Every year we ask each family to support Parker and help us reach 100% parent giving participation, ensuring the School’s financial health, access and affordability. Thank you for committing to Parker and entrusting us with your child’s education. All the best,

PARKER BASICS One School: Parker is one School located on two campuses with three divisions— Lower, Middle and Upper. Parker serves students from more than 80 zip codes across San Diego County. Two Campuses: Parker has two campuses in the Mission Hills and Linda Vista neighborhoods. Three Divisions: Parker has three School divisions: Lower (JK to Grade 5), Middle (Grades 6 to 8) and Upper (Grades 9 to 12). Each School has its own Head. Kevin Yaley, the Head of School, oversees all three divisions in addition to School-wide operations and finances. Mission Hills (MH) Campus: The Lower School was established in 1912 by Clara Sturges Johnson and her husband, famed architect William Templeton Johnson. They brought Col. Francis W. Parker’s educational ideals from Chicago to San Diego. The barbed quatrefoil on the Szekely Auditorium was Johnson's signature mark and that special window symbolizes Parker’s motto, “as far as the mind can see.” Linda Vista (LV) Campus: The home of the Middle and Upper Schools. The School has been a proud member of the Linda Vista community since 1971 when Parker purchased the San Miguel School for Boys that previously occupied the property. Heart of Campus (opening fall 2018): A strategic initiative that ensures students and faculty can park safely on the Linda Vista Campus. The Heart of Campus project also opens up a cascading set of benefits for the School, including a deepening of programs, enhancing students’ sense of pride and place, and serving as a central gathering space for Middle and Upper School students. 14
GLOSSARY Annual Giving: Annual gifts advance Parker’s mission, support our culture of diversity and inclusion, ensure the best academic experience for each student, and help the School bridge the gap between tuition and cost of a Parker education. Tuition falls short of the true cost of a Parker education. Every student at Parker is subsidized, even students who do not receive financial assistance. The gap between tuition revenues and full annual cost is approximately $1,000 per student. Our goal is 100% parent giving participation. Back to School Night: All parents are invited to their child’s classes to meet the faculty and experience a shortened version of a day-in-the-life of their student. Day of Giving: The Tuesday after Thanksgiving has come to be recognized as a global celebration of generosity. Parker participates in this special day, with the PA's leadership and as part of the Gala efforts, to raise support for faculty professional development. Financial Assistance: Parker provides aid to qualified families who submit financial information through School & Student Services (SSS). SSS is a nationally recognized program used by independent schools nationwide to assess a family’s demonstrated financial need. The School awards financial assistance to 18% of the student body for a total of $4.6 million. Even though many families at Parker make financial sacrifices to pay tuition, whether they receive financial assistance or not, it is crucial for every member of our community to participate in our annual giving campaign.
Francis Parker School Parents Association Notebook
Gala: The PA’s annual fundraising event, which raises support for student financial assistance, includes auctions, dinner and entertainment. In addition, there are two fundraising efforts to support the Gala, Day of Giving (which raises support for faculty professional development) and Lower School movie night. Grandparent Council (GPC): A group open to all the grandparents of Parker students. The GPC hosts fun activities including Grandparent & Special Friends Days at the Lower School in the fall and at the Middle and Upper Schools in the spring. Visit francisparker.org/ grandparents for more information. Head of School New Parent Dinner: A special evening event for new parents from all three divisions in the fall. Homecoming: A fun-filled family day featuring a home football game at the Linda Vista Campus. Intercampus Shuttle Service: A student shuttle service between the MH and LV Campuses in the morning and in the afternoon at no additional cost. Linking-in Lancers: Host a student intern. Connect with Parker’s Community Engagement Program and partner with other Parker parents to expand the internship sponsor pool. Parent Portal: The online hub for the most up-to-date School information. Students may refer to it as "On Campus" or "My School App." Rebate Programs: An easy way to indirectly support Parker. There is no cost to you or the School. Simply register and shop with AmazonSmile or download the Benefit app.
www.francisparker.org/parents
Report on Philanthropy: Annual report which details gifts from parents, faculty and staff, grandparents, alumni and parents of alumni to the School for the endowment and current priorities. Senior Class Directory: Senior class parents receive a printable parent directory (via email) once their student graduates. Smugmug: Online catalog of Parker photos of various student and parent activities and events. Parents may upload photos by going to http://francisparker. org.smugmug.com and logging in. The Smugmug username and password are found on the parent portal. Student Fundraisers: Events such as bake sales, book drives and collections raise support for School clubs or outside charitable organizations. Summer Program: Now in its 58th year, the Program offers a variety of learning, grade-level "bridging" and advancement opportunities set in a fun and relaxed environment. Transportation: Simplify your daily commute and take advantage of Parker's bus service flat rate pricing. Parker’s bus fleet is equipped with the latest safety features, including well-padded, highback seats and three-point lap/shoulder seat belts offering stops located across San Diego County. Uniforms: Parker is committed to a standard of dress that reinforces the values of our School, ensures consistency and allows students and faculty to focus on teaching and learning.
