Welcome
Dear Students and Families, A warm welcome from the Francis Parker School’s Summer Program office. We are delighted that your family is considering spending a part of the upcoming summer with us. Whether on the Mission Hills (JK to Grade 5) or Linda Vista campus (Grades 6 to 12), we believe we have put in place another summer of great learning, enrichment and advancement opportunities for Parker, area-wide and international students. There is truly something for everyone–mornings in the classroom and afternoons outside having fun in the Summer Fun! or Lancer Camp activities. We are pleased to announce that the Summer Fun! and Lancer Camp programs were recently accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA), receiving the highest possible distinction for operating safe and secure “camp” environments. We understand that there are a number of summer academic, enrichment and sports options for students and families to choose from here in San Diego. Simply stated, we want the Parker Summer Program to be your first choice, this year and in the future. Accordingly, we are pleased to offer 2016 prices for virtually all academic classes and Parker-directed sports camps for families who take advantage of the Early Bird registration option. It is our goal to ensure an attractive return on the investment you make on behalf of your child(ren) in the Parker Summer Program. Please review all information, courses and activities presented on the pages that follow. Should you have questions about the curriculum, the registration process or the Summer Program in general, please contact us.

For the youngest children, our Mission Hills campus provides the ideal setting for fun classes, activities and social growth set in a safe, fun and nurturing environment. For 4-year-olds we are excited to offer a new, dedicated Little Lancers program both Summer Session I and Summer Session II. Little Lancers focuses on the development of the entire child as he or she prepares for Junior Kindergarten. Junior and Senior Kindergarten Little Explorers for 5- and 6-year olds, respectively, returns, as does a full slate of JumpStart classes that serve to bridge one grade level to the next in anticipation of the upcoming fall term. The intent is to keep class enrollment low so children receive ongoing personal attention each and every day. Parker’s traditional school-year teachers teach many of the Summer Program classes, so students and families will see familiar faces at the front of many classrooms. Specialty classes including Destination: Space Camp!, Spanish, Chinese (Mandarin), Monart: Mixed Media Workshop; Engineering and Robotics courses presented by Engineering for Kids, and a series of fun and exciting computer science programs designed by Club Xcite are being offered–some for the first time.
For families interested in enrolling their child(ren) on a full-day basis, Summer Fun! returns. Summer Fun! (appropriate for Grade 1 to 5 students) begins immediately after lunchtime each day and takes the children off-campus for fun, safe, age-appropriate activities and field trips to destinations that may include the beach, the San Diego Zoo and Aquatica. All Summer Fun! participants, regardless of age or grade level are guaranteed to have fun with friends, visiting premier San Diego destinations each afternoon. (Summer Fun! students are transported on a Parker school bus with the appropriate adult supervision.) Extended Day Care The Summer Program offers extended day care each morning from 7:30-8:15 am, and then again in the afternoon from 3:30-5:30 pm. There is a flat $12 daily fee for morning extended day care and a flat $20 daily fee for afternoon extended day care. Families are invoiced immediately following Session I and Session II for day care charges. Lunch and Snacks A prepared lunch and morning/afternoon snacks are provided for all students enrolled in Lower School programs (at no additional charge.)
All Grade 1 to 5 classes begin at 8:30 am and conclude by 12:30 pm, with lunch served just before noon. The Little Lancers, Junior Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten students’ day runs from 8:30 am-3:30 pm. There is a mid-morning snack and recess for all students, and an afternoon snack for all Little Lancers and Little Explorers.

Parker continues to pride itself on educating and shaping the whole child, subscribing to the notion of “sound body, sound mind.” To complement our academic and arts courses, the 2017 Summer Program is delighted to offer great sports camp options, beginning mid-June and running through the early part of August. Sports camps are open to Lower School, Middle School and Upper School children with all camps held on Parker’s Linda Vista campus (with the exception of tennis). Outside vendors, including, Nike®, Top Gun Basketball and Performance Athletics Softball return to offer their own camps. All camps are run by experienced and often professional coaches and feature skill-level and age-specific opportunities. Student-to-coach ratios are kept intentionally low to afford the best possible learning environments.
Important: When selecting and registering for a Parker-Directed sports camp, please do so through the Parker Summer Program general registration link. For sports camps offered by outside vendors, please register via the link provided by that particular vendor. (All outside vendor links are found with the sports camps descriptions in the online catalogue.) To ensure proper staffing, facilities, fields and equipment for all sports camps, registration must be completed by June 9. Registrations received after June 9 will incur a $20 late fee per student, per camp. Please note that the Early Bird Registration Discount applies only to Parker-directed sports camps. Sorry: Outside vendor-directed camps are not eligible for the Early Bird Discount.
Please note: Due to the likelihood of the returfing of Lauer Field, Greenberg Field and KiddWohlford Field during late spring and early summer, dates and times of some sports camps will likely be impacted. It may be the case that a sports camp will need to be relocated to an off-campus field nearby. Updates will be posted online at www.francisparker.org/summer or families may contact the Summer Program office for more information.

A-Z GUIDE AMERICAN CAMP ASSOCIATION (ACA) ACCREDITATION The Parker Summer Program has been awarded American Camp Association (ACA) accreditation. The ACA distinction applies primarily to the afternoon programs of a “camp” nature offered on both campuses. Parker’s Summer Fun! and Lancer Camp programs have received ACA (American Camp Association) accreditation.
ATTENDANCE/ABSENCES Due to the short duration of the Summer Program, absences must be avoided. NOTE: For courses receiving trimester, semester or full-year academic credit, missing more than one (1) class in a three-week session will prevent a student from fulfilling classroom required hours, thus warranting a no-credit grade for the course. IMPORTANT: If a student will be absent for any reason, please advise the Summer Program Office by 7:50 am by calling 858569-7900 x 4109 or 4236. ATTIRE Students should dress summer casual. Recommended attire for girls are blouses or polo shirts, slacks or shorts (of an appropriate length). For boys, sport or polo shirts, slacks or shorts are suggested. Jeans and t-shirts for both girls and boys are acceptable but must be neat and free of holes or tears. BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS AND POLICIES The Parker Summer Program reserves the right to dismiss at any time, any student whose deportment or conduct is deemed inappropriate, unsafe and/or counter to the classroom experience or to the goals of the Summer Program. Under no circumstances will bullying or hazing be tolerated. In the instance of a dismissal (or a student withdrawal once classes have begun), no refund of tuition will be issued. Parents and students are encouraged to review the complete version of the 2017 Summer Program Policies and Procedures online at www.francisparker.org/summerpolicies.

BOOK ORDERING INSTRUCTIONS For courses requiring a textbook, please note the following information for ordering: Middle and Upper School Divisions: As we approach the beginning of classes in June, families will be sent an email designating courses that require the purchase of a textbook or class materials. Families will then select a preferred retailer or online vendor of their choice. Note: Typically, full-time students at Francis Parker School who receive financial assistance for the purchase of books during the traditional school year do not receive a similar book credit in the 2017 Summer Program. CLASSROOM ASSIGNMENTS/FIRST DAY OF CLASSES Classroom assignments will be made by the second week of June and posted on the website prior to the opening day for Session I (June 19) and Session II (July 10). On the first day of each Session, Summer Program staff will be on-hand to direct or accompany students to their classroom(s) as needed. Staff will be stationed just beyond the security booth upon entering the Linda Vista Campus. On the Mission Hills campus, students gather on the playground to meet their teachers and are then escorted to their classroom starting on the first day and every day thereafter.
