Greetings & Farewell

Hey Krakens, It’s sad to say, but this will be my last newsletter. Rather than a normal greeting message, I want to take this time to reflect on my term. I want to thank each and every member of this division. You all have been the best group of leaders and I have felt so honored this whole term being able to lead and serve all of you. Y’all are the reason for the success of my term and I cannot thank you guys enough. Keep reminding yourselves about how amazing you all are as leaders and just remember the impact all of you have made towards your clubs, division, district, and all the other leaders around the world. From water balloon fights, to pies, rallies, squatting pictures, and constant reminders to pay dues, there have been so many memories that were made during my term that I will never forget. So many great bonds have been made this term and I’m proud to call all of you my friends. I hope that I will be able to still connect with each and every one of you in the future. This is so much I want to say, and I will send a letter to Andrea saying my final goodbyes. I know that she’ll do an amazing job as your next Lieutenant Governor, so make sure to treat her very well! With that, I just want to say that I love each and every single one of you! You’re all the best and I hope you enjoy my last newsletter!

-Greg

"Hi Krakens! First things first, it's a honor to be your LTG for the upcoming year and thank you so much for electing me to represent you all. While I am in love with key club, I'm also involved in my school's Speech and Debate team (but I don't debate so please don't ask me about arguing) and during the spring and summer you'll probably find me biking around Washington. I'm a huge fan of corny pick up lines and puns make my heart happy. I'm so excited to get to know you all throughout this year & please feel free to reach out whenever you want. I'm here for you guys!“ - Andrea Diep, 2015-2016 Lieutenant Governor

MNT results when tetanus spores, which are present in soil everywhere, enter the bloodstream. It is mainly caused by a lack of access to sanitary birthing conditions, unclean instruments used to cut the umbilical cord and unclean post-partum cord care. Once the disease is contracted, the fatality rate can be as high as 100 percent in underserved areas. Most mothers and newborns who die of tetanus live in areas of Africa, South Asia and East Asia, where many woman are poor, having little access to health care, have unlimited information about safe delivery procedures and continue harmful cord care practices. Every 11 minutes, 1 baby will die due to MNT. It only takes $1.80 to save a mother and her future children.

Division 33

PNW District

Farewell

Hello Division 33! I guess this will be my goodbye message to you all. I just want to say thank you. Whether it was support, key club spirit, or just being a good friend, all of you have helped me so much throughout my term. I am truly honored to have been your lieutenant governor. I will always remember when you guys cheered me on at closing session as I awkwardly stared at the camera and when you guys gave it your all to be the ones with the most divisional spirit. Also, remember that every single one of you has made a positive impact on my life. I know every one of your names and I've created many friendships that I hope will not be broken. Although I may not be the lieutenant governor now, I will always be a part of the kraken family. I love you all.

- Edward Park

Greetings

Division 33 Lieutenant Governor Greg Park

What’s up, Division 33! I guess to introduce myself I’ll just say some random facts about me. I’m currently a junior at Auburn Mountainview High School. I served as Secretary and President for my home club. I was born in Tacoma, WA on February 13, 1997. I love grayscale and black & white for some reason. I love streetwear and music. A$ap Rocky and Kanye West are a must. My favorite foods include noodles and sushi. I am so excited and incredibly blessed to be serving as Lieutenant Governor of our division. Members of this division are so dedicated and energetic. It’s just an amazing feeling knowing that so many members in this division have so much pride for it. I hope that I will serve you all well and help create a better community with all of you. Remember, stay based, guys.

In Care and Service,

- Greg Park

You’ll get the chance to meet members throughout the division, reminisce over DCON and also be able to set goals for the next year! There will also be a little bit of officer training/ meeting between all the schools. All new incoming officers are required to go to the DCM. Each school will be assigned something to bring. It will be loads of fun! Don’t miss out! Goals

I have some set goals I want to achieve as Lieutenant Governor. I decided to classify them into categories. Unity: I want to create a better bond within our division. I want all the schools to be close together and create better bonds. In the end, we’ll all end up feeling like a family. Growth: I want each club to increase their membership by 10%. The more members, the better. This also helps with unity. Fun: I want to create a fun environment for everyone in the division. Like mentioned before, I want everyone to feel as though they are in a family. Everyone can have a great time with each other. Service: I want to create more service projects and volunteering opportunities within the division so that we can reach out to the community at a bigger scale. DCON: It’d be amazing to have more members attending the District Convention next year. It’ll be an amazing experience for new attendees and will continue to be fun for members who have attended before. I also want to see our division get more awards and the spirit stick.

Back to School

Get your club up and running again for the new school year.

Greetings Lt. Governor Contents

Hey Krakens, I hope you all had a great summer because I know that I did! Why do I say that? I say that because being involved with Key Club this summer has really been the highlight of the whole season. Seeing members at rallies really made me so pumped up for the upcoming school year and to see what each club will bring to the organization. I hope to see more people involved with Key Club in the division this year. Hopefully this Back to School newsletter will help members get a better feel of the club and others more interested in it! It’s a new year with new people and new classes. Don’t get baffled with all the workload and stress. Try to make this a year that you will remember. In Love and Service,

Greg Park Division 33 Lieutenant Governor Pacific Northwest District Key Club International

Meet The Officers of Division 33

Ashley Phan Div. Secretary Senior TJHS

Savannah Hornbuckle President Senior AHS

HELLO 33 KRAKENS! My name is Ashley Phan and I am your divisional secretary. So a little bit about me, I am a senior at TJHS, I participate in 6 clubs at TJ, and I play tennis. My favorite club out of the 6 would have to be Key Club. I have been a part of Key Club since I was an itty bitty freshman. Key Club has inspired me to be a caring, motivated, and outgoing person. It has truly changed my life and made me a better person like I hope it has done for you. I want to end this short so it was nice talking to you Krakens and I hope you have an amazing school year and I'll hopefully see you soon!

Hello Key clubbers! My name is Savannah Hornbuckle. I am a senior at Auburn High School and I am serving as Auburn's president for the second year in a row. I first joined Key club in my sophomore year for the community involvement and the warming atmosphere. My favorite part about being in Key Club is getting to reach out to others and really help make a difference in our neighborhoods, schools, and town. This year I am excited to expand our club and service, and go to DCON for the first time ever! I look forward to spending another eventful year with Key club and hopefully getting to meet other members and clubs.

Kevin Nguyen President Senior AMHS

Natalie Mendez President Senior ARHS

Hey Key Clubbers, My name is Kevin Nguyen. I am a Senior at Auburn Mountainview High School and President of their Key Club. I enjoy playing tennis and I am in the Sports Medicine program. Kevin Cho President Senior DHS Hello fellow key clubbers of division 33. My name is Kevin Cho. I am the Key Club President at Decatur Senior High School and also the ASB President. I am a senior at a place I call home. Key Club is a way to connect with other schools, other members and officers. It is a KEY part of who I am now. Key Club has helped me develop as a leader, and also as a person. I hope you guys take this journey with me and the other presidents to a another great key club year! Go Gators!

Chris Vargas President Senior TJHS Hello, my name is Chris Vargas, and I am the Key Club President at Thomas Jefferson High School! My goal is to make Key Club a home for anyone else who loves service as much as I do. Key Club has taught me more about myself than I could imagine. It was the place where I could truly be myself, and meet amazing people along the way. I want to motivate other members to run for a Key Club position in the future. I love being a role model that the younger members could look up to, especially because I am a senior this year. Key Club could also be a great way to end my High School career off with a bang! I am looking forward to the next school year, working with my division, as well as trying to reach out to the world of service. Thank you.

Lauren Park President Senior FWHS Hey guys, I'm Lauren Park. Currently a senior at FWHS and the president at Federal Way Highs Key Club! I'm super excited to spend my last year of high school in service and to give back to a community that's given so much to me, with the people who inspire me most, all of YOU. So let's have another kraken year (see what I did there haha ;D) and hopefully I'll be able to meet and build relations with all of you throughout this coming year!

Christie Peralta President Senior TBHS Hey Guys! I’m Christie, a senior at Todd Beamer High School. I cannot wait to meet all of you at DCMs and other Key Club events. Let’s do our best to make this year memorable and achieve success within our clubs to make for a strong and united division. (Sorry I don’t have a recent picture for you guys but please enjoy this one of me, a few of my members, and Joseph Vincent from DCON 2014)

Big Pancake

A pancake breakfast through Applebee’s that will be held on Saturday, October 4th at the Federal Way Applebee’s and Saturday, October 11th at the Auburn Applebee’s. The breakfast will take place from 8 am – 11am. Tickets are $10 each and the Kiwanis clubs in the Auburn and Federal Way areas need to sell at least 100 tickets each. The $10 ticket gets the purchaser pancakes, eggs, ham juice and coffee or tea. In addition to selling tickets, about 8-10 individuals are needed to serve the breakfasts and bus the table. Applebee’s staff will do all the cooking and dishes. Money made from the event will be sent to the Eliminate Project.

Scare up some funds and fun this Halloween by participating in Trick-orTreat for UNICEF. It’s a great opportunity to collect donations instead of candy or to bring club members together for a fabulous event or party. All money collected by Kiwanis-family members through Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF will once again support The Eliminate Project and help save moms and babies. Did you know? A proud participant in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF since 1994, Key Club has raised more than US$6 million for child survival and development programs around the world—from efforts to eliminate iodine deficiency disorder to HIV/AIDS initiatives in Kenya and Swaziland. Starting in 2012 Key Club joined other Kiwanis Service Leadership Programs to Trickor-Treat for UNICEF to raise money for The Eliminate Project.

Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF Starting September 2, UNICEF will be shipping coin boxes to clubs that have participated in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF during the past two years. A box of supplies should be shipped to your school by September 15. Find the list of clubs that will receive boxes at the following link: www.TheEliminateProject.org/trickortreat. Clubs can host a talent show, dance, trunk-or-treat, pumpkin carving or decorating contest, haunted house, zombie run— or whatever you think will be the most fun. Encourage sponsoring Kiwanis clubs to help and become eligible for the Unity Award. Finally, be sure to remind all clubs to submit donations along with the The Eliminate Project gift form.

September YOF The Youth Opportunities Fund (YOF) is an endowed fund for Key Club International held within the Kiwanis International Foundation. This fund uses earned interest to help Key Clubs and Key Club members serve the world by providing grants for service opportunities. The fund also provides academic scholarships for higher education. The Youth Opportunities Fund is established through a portion of your Key Club International dues and through the purchase of G. Harold Martin Fellowships.

APPLY FOR A YOF GRANT The basics you need to know: •YOF grants are given only to Key Clubs and/or club members. •There is only one funding cycle for the Youth Opportunities Fund. The application must be received by October 15 at 11:59PM EST. •Clubs may request funding assistance ranging anywhere from US$100 to US$2,000. The committee typically funds those clubs who are asking for a portion of the total cost of the project, and clubs who are working with other organizations to fund and complete the project. Notification of the Key Club International Board’s decision will be mailed no later than January 1, 2015. •As of September 2013, applicants must use the new YOF grant application. Previous years' applications will not be accepted. •Guidelines for filing the application are also listed in the Key Club Guidebook under Board Policies.

But, I'm sure ALL of us are ready for Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is a great way to help raise funds for UNICEF that will go into projects such as the Eliminate Project. Get your boxes ready and help save babies! Speaking of the Eliminate Project, thank you to all of those who attended the Federal Way Big Pancake event on October 4th! Big Pancake was an event help by the Federal Way Kiwanis clubs that helped raise money for the Eliminate Project. Hey Key Club Treasurers! This is Aneesh Pappu, your district treasurer. I hope you are all having a wonderful and productive school year and, for all you seniors, I hope that college applications are going well! We are currently in the midst of my favorite time of the year – dues season! Dues season runs until December 1st and is the time frame in which all clubs must submit dues in order to be a part of Key Club International. Although there are many service organizations aside from Key Club that do not require payments to join, there is no group that provides you with the same level of opportunities as we do. When you pay dues to join, you’re joining an international organization with ties and projects all over the world. Your dues provide you with the opportunity to fundraise for projects such as the Eliminate Project in order to cure deadly diseases around the world. The benefits don’t stop there however; joining Key Club provides you and your club with resources to succeed. As a paid member, you and your club immediately receive the benefits of district support ranging from the help of your Lieutenant Governor and District Executive Officers to the aid of the adult Kiwanians who support us in each and every endeavor we undertake. As we enter October a very important deadline for dues submission is arriving – Early Bird dues are due November 1st. Although it is not required to meet this deadline, submitting your club’s dues by this time comes with a myriad of benefits, including priority seating at DCON and an Early Bird patch for your club’s banner. In order to meet this deadline, each club must submit $12.50 per member for at least 15 members through the Membership Update Center (MUC), which can be found at www.keyclub.org/MUC. If you have not logged into the MUC this school year yet, it is crucial that you sit down with your adviser, login, and begin the registration process. If you have any issues with login credentials, be sure to email memberservices@kiwanis.org and include me as well (apappu97@gmail.com). After the Early Bird deadline, the final deadline for dues submission is December st 1 . Unfortunately, clubs who do not submit their dues by this date will be placed on delinquent status, which can eventually translate into suspended and even inactive statuses for clubs. In order to avoid this, I highly recommend that you finish the dues process as soon as possible! I am also always available to assist if you have any issues, so don’t hesitate to shoot me an email or Facebook message if you ever need to! Happy Dues Season! In Caring & Service, Aneesh Pappu Pacific Northwest District Treasurer Key Club International1

2015

2016 Where: Federal Way Regional Library When: January 10th, 2015 Time: 1:00 PM Why: To elect the 2015-2016 Lieutenant Governor Who: Candidates, 2 Delegates per school, members, officers, Kiwanians With the end of my term approaching nearer and nearer, it is time to have elections for the 2015-2016 Lieutenant Governor! Each club is REQUIRED to send 4 attendees and 2 of them have to be delegates. Your club decides who votes, but I encourage Underclassmen to attend the election rally. Only 2 delegates per school are permitted to vote.

"Do you love Key Club? Do you enjoy volunteering? Have you been to all, if not, tried to go to all of the DCM’s this past year? Do you want to better the organization at a higher level? Overlook the seven high schools in our division? Or be the leader of the Krakens? If you said yes to all of the questions above and have ever considered, even for the slightest moment, to run for Lieutenant Governor… DO IT. I can assure you it will be the most unforgettable year of your high school career because it was for me. The experience of working with the district board is like none other. Beyond the cool and official looking badge, you will gain life long friendships and lasting memories. Currently a college student, I constantly finding myself reminiscing about my term as LtG. It was that great. So don’t be afraid to step up and turn in that candidates packet!“ - Amy Nguyen, 2012-2013 Lieutenant Governor of Division 33

“Running for the position of LtG had a huge impact on my life. The only hard part about running for this position was actually making the decision to run. I learned skills in communicating with others and it helped me take risks that were out of my comfort zone. Trust me, I was not the type that was able to talk in front of people, or the one that would act enthusiastic. To add, the relationships and connections that I have created through this position is what stood out to me. During my term, I was able to connect with others that had the same outlook or similar goals for their community. Attending college, I am still in touch with many of the other key clubbers and LtGs. I highly encourage anyone and everyone with a strong passion for this club to run for LtG, as it is truly a great learning experience.” - Edward Park, 2013-2014 Lieutenant Governor of Division 33

IEUTENANT GOVERNOR

Hey Krakens, Happy New Year! I hope you all had a great Winter Break and I hope that 2015 has treated you all well thus far! Now that we’re all back in school, that means Key Club meetings have started up again! I’ve enjoyed all the club meetings I’ve visited over the past month. You guys are awesome! First off, I want to give a shoutout to all the clubs who have been volunteering over Winter Break. It warms my heart knowing how dedicated you all are even during times when school’s closed. Also, congratulations to Federal Way High School’s Andrea Diep for being elected the 2015-2016 Lieutenant Governor! I know that you will lead the division well and take good care of it. I am so excited to see what she has in store for the division. Now that it’s January, that means that the DCON registration deadline is coming up soon! If you haven’t already, find members who are interested in attending, and if you want to go, then by all means, if your club lets you, ATTEND! It’s an amazing experience that you will never forget. You get to meet tons of people, go to amazing and helpful workshops, hear speakers, and go to a big dance on the final night! I would suggest for clubs to finish collecting and submitting registration materials by January 19th so that you will meet the deadline of January 24th! I hope you all enjoy this newsletter. If you have any questions, contact me at any time! In Love and Service,

Greg Park Division 33 Lieutenant Governor Pacific Northwest District Key Club International

NTERNATIONAL TRUSTEE Happy 2015, Pacific-Northwest! I’m so glad that we have finally made it. After a swamped first semester of school, a myriad of Key Club events, and a relaxing holiday vacation, I’m sure you all are so excited to welcome in the New Year. A lot of people see this this month as a time of resolutions. However, I think it can better be characterized as a time to reflect and look forward to the future. What awesome things have you all done so far with your time in Key Club? How will you make the most of the rest of this year? Thus far, I have seen Key Clubbers do some spectacular things. Shout out to Tasmia Ahmed and her division for collecting 70 gift cards for sex trafficked survivors in Portland. Shout out to the Communications Committee for completely renovating the face of the Pacific-Northwest district website. Shout out to Kevin Zhang for bringing the “bowl” to #palabowlo. These Key Clubbers have inspired us to do great things. What’s even more exciting is that there’s still so much to come. Whether it’s participating in “Service to Infinity and Beyond” at the 2015 District Convention or finally reaching our goal for The Eliminate Project, the coming months have much in store. Don’t feel the need to make new resolutions; your passion for service, leadership, and camaraderie will naturally take the district to new heights this 2015. In terms of the international level, there are several items we can anticipate together. First of all, 2015 is our year to eliminate maternal/neonatal tetanus (MNT) from the face of the planet! We’re taking things to a whole new level. The International Board has its own personal pen fundraiser (I’m bringing them to DCON!), and if all of Key Club International can raise an additional $80,000, board members will be kissing an octopus at our winter board meeting. (Yes, I’m very scared. But I do it fo’ da Eliminate!) For clarity, our winter board meeting will be held in Detroit, Michigan, from January 22 to 25, 2015. The board meeting agenda has already been posted to the Key Club website. If you have any questions, or if you’d like me to bring an additional topic to the board, don’t hesitate to reach out. Finally, with this year’s International Convention swiftly approaching, it’s definitely an event we can eagerly look forward to. Held from June 24 to 28, 2015, in Indianapolis, the home of Key Club International headquarters, this will be an experience you don’t want to miss. As it is the 100th anniversary of Kiwanis, a lot of our programs will be held in conjunction with Circle K and Kiwanis members, making for a whopping estimate of 12,000 attendees. We have some awesome events planned; we’ll be renting out an entire street of Indianapolis, Hellogoodbye will be performing, and we’ll be surrounded by tons of fun things to do (i.e. free museums, bikes to ride around the city, zoos, etc.). It’s the event of a lifetime, so start fundraising and planning now! Indeed, 2014 may have brought much positivity and joy –especially in Key Club International— but I’m sure 2015 can offer even more. Have a great year, everyone! Yours in service, Tashrima Hossain International Trustee Georgia, KIWIN'S, & Pacific-Northwest
