Greetings Lt. Governor Contents

Hey Krakens, I hope you all had a great summer because I know that I did! Why do I say that? I say that because being involved with Key Club this summer has really been the highlight of the whole season. Seeing members at rallies really made me so pumped up for the upcoming school year and to see what each club will bring to the organization. I hope to see more people involved with Key Club in the division this year. Hopefully this Back to School newsletter will help members get a better feel of the club and others more interested in it! It’s a new year with new people and new classes. Don’t get baffled with all the workload and stress. Try to make this a year that you will remember. In Love and Service,

Greg Park Division 33 Lieutenant Governor Pacific Northwest District Key Club International The Kraken

ISTRICT GOVERNOR

Dear PNW Key Clubbers, I hope everyone has had a great start of the school year, and you know what the start of the school year means... Your club’s first Key Club Meeting! Key Club is in full bloom, and I can’t wait to see what your clubs are doing for service and fundraisers! Remember, if you show how passionate you are for Key Club others will be inspired to join. Be proud to be a Key Clubber and remember to exemplify leadership and character, while always being inclusive and caring to those around you. Meeting all of you at the rallies was so inspiring; you are all constantly dedicating your time and love to the communities across the Pacific Northwest. I love how you represent key club with your pride and spirit while showing the dedication and compassion you hold for others. As always, remember the district board is here for the members and clubs. Please feel free to contact us at any time with your questions or concerns. I hope to see y’all at DCON 2015! Lisa Antonio

NTERNATIONAL TRUSTEE Hey, Pacific-Northwest! My name is Tashrima Hossain, and I’d like to introduce myself as the new International Trustee for your district. It is such an honor to be in your service, primarily by ensuring that your voices are heard at the international level during the upcoming year. I’m excited to join the PNW moose; I’ve already received so much enthusiasm from the Board, I’ve heard many great things about PNW, and I can’t wait to see all the great achievements your district has in store. To let you know a little about myself, I am from Cypress, Texas, which is a suburban area adjacent to the Houston border. In addition to Key Club, I devote much of my time to debate and Student Council— which often leaves with very little time for sleep! As a result, I’m a bit of a grandma, and I like spending much of my free time sleeping, reading, or just hanging out with friends. For those of you who would like to know more about my duties as International Trustee, I have a few basic responsibilities: attending International Board meetings, participating in a maximum of two district visits, and acting as a representative of the international level of Key Club. In addition, Governor Lisa and I completed a Governor-Trustee agreement, which identified the main expectations Lisa has of me, as your district’s Trustee; many of said goals revolve around constant communication and building positive Sister District relations—all of which are means to ensure that I effectively represent your views on the international level. Additionally, I serve with Jenalee Beazley, Rip Livingston, Liz Moore, and Nicole Lema on the Growth and Communications Committee. There, we predominantly focus on fostering a connection between advisors and Kiwanis clubs, making Key Club a school-wide name, creating a “cool factor” for Key Club, empowering local clubs to publicize their work, creating a strategic growth plan for KCI, and creating an annual club census. We already have a very specific set of goals and action steps for the first quarter; I plan to update you all with any progress in that arena. During my term, I will stay committed to the goals I campaigned with, but more than that, I intend to actively serve as a resource for you all. If you have questions about amendments, elections, service, or general Key Club knowledge, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I’m here as a resource, friend, and assistant in any way you may need. Call me, email me, Facebook me— I’m always ready to lend a hand.

So a little bit about me, I am a senior at TJHS, I participate in 6 clubs at TJ, and I play tennis. My favorite club out of the 6 would have to be Key Club. I have been a part of Key Club since I was an itty bitty freshman. Key Club has inspired me to be a caring, motivated, and outgoing person. It has truly changed my life and made me a better person like I hope it has done for you. I want to end this short so it was nice talking to you Krakens and I hope you have an amazing school year and I'll hopefully see you soon!

Hello Key clubbers! My name is Savannah Hornbuckle. I am a senior at Auburn High School and I am serving as Auburn's president for the second year in a row. I first joined Key club in my sophomore year for the community involvement and the warming atmosphere. My favorite part about being in Key Club is getting to reach out to others and really help make a difference in our neighborhoods, schools, and town. This year I am excited to expand our club and service, and go to DCON for the first time ever! I look forward to spending another eventful year with Key club and hopefully getting to meet other members and clubs.

Kevin Cho President Senior DHS Hello fellow key clubbers of division 33. My name is Kevin Cho. I am the Key Club President at Decatur Senior High School and also the ASB President. I am a senior at a place I call home. Key Club is a way to connect with other schools, other members and officers. It is a KEY part of who I am now. Key Club has helped me develop as a leader, and also as a person. I hope you guys take this journey with me and the other presidents to a another great key club year! Go Gators!

Lauren Park President Senior FWHS Hey guys, I'm Lauren Park. Currently a senior at FWHS and the president at Federal Way Highs Key Club! I'm super excited to spend my last year of high school in service and to give back to a community that's given so much to me, with the people who inspire me most, all of YOU. So let's have another kraken year (see what I did there haha ;D) and hopefully I'll be able to meet and build relations with all of you throughout this coming year!

Chris Vargas President Senior TJHS Hello, my name is Chris Vargas, and I am the Key Club President at Thomas Jefferson High School! My goal is to make Key Club a home for anyone else who loves service as much as I do. Key Club has taught me more about myself than I could imagine. It was the place where I could truly be myself, and meet amazing people along the way. I want to motivate other members to run for a Key Club position in the future. I love being a role model that the younger members could look up to, especially because I am a senior this year. Key Club could also be a great way to end my High School career off with a bang! I am looking forward to the next school year, working with my division, as well as trying to reach out to the world of service. Thank you.

Christie Peralta President Senior TBHS Hey Guys! I’m Christie, a senior at Todd Beamer High School. I cannot wait to meet all of you at DCMs and other Key Club events. Let’s do our best to make this year memorable and achieve success within our clubs to make for a strong and united division. (Sorry I don’t have a recent picture for you guys but please enjoy this one of me, a few of my members, and Joseph Vincent from DCON 2014)

MNT results when tetanus spores, which are present in soil everywhere, enter the bloodstream. It is mainly caused by a lack of access to sanitary birthing conditions, unclean instruments used to cut the umbilical cord and unclean post-partum cord care. Once the disease is contracted, the fatality rate can be as high as 100 percent in underserved areas. Most mothers and newborns who die of tetanus live in areas of Africa, South Asia and East Asia, where many woman are poor, having little access to health care, have unlimited information about safe delivery procedures and continue harmful cord care practices.

September YOF The Youth Opportunities Fund (YOF) is an endowed fund for Key Club International held within the Kiwanis International Foundation. This fund uses earned interest to help Key Clubs and Key Club members serve the world by providing grants for service opportunities. The fund also provides academic scholarships for higher education. The Youth Opportunities Fund is established through a portion of your Key Club International dues and through the purchase of G. Harold Martin Fellowships.

APPLY FOR A YOF GRANT The basics you need to know: •YOF grants are given only to Key Clubs and/or club members. •There is only one funding cycle for the Youth Opportunities Fund. The application must be received by October 15 at 11:59PM EST. •Clubs may request funding assistance ranging anywhere from US$100 to US$2,000. The committee typically funds those clubs who are asking for a portion of the total cost of the project, and clubs who are working with other organizations to fund and complete the project. Notification of the Key Club International Board’s decision will be mailed no later than January 1, 2015. •As of September 2013, applicants must use the new YOF grant application. Previous years' applications will not be accepted. •Guidelines for filing the application are also listed in the Key Club Guidebook under Board Policies.

Scare up some funds and fun this Halloween by participating in Trick-orTreat for UNICEF. It’s a great opportunity to collect donations instead of candy or to bring club members together for a fabulous event or party. All money collected by Kiwanis-family members through Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF will once again support The Eliminate Project and help save moms and babies. Did you know? A proud participant in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF since 1994, Key Club has raised more than US$6 million for child survival and development programs around the world—from efforts to eliminate iodine deficiency disorder to HIV/AIDS initiatives in Kenya and Swaziland. Starting in 2012 Key Club joined other Kiwanis Service Leadership Programs to Trickor-Treat for UNICEF to raise money for The Eliminate Project.

Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF Starting September 2, UNICEF will be shipping coin boxes to clubs that have participated in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF during the past two years. A box of supplies should be shipped to your school by September 15. Find the list of clubs that will receive boxes at the following link: www.TheEliminateProject.org/trickortreat. Clubs can host a talent show, dance, trunk-or-treat, pumpkin carving or decorating contest, haunted house, zombie run— or whatever you think will be the most fun. Encourage sponsoring Kiwanis clubs to help and become eligible for the Unity Award. Finally, be sure to remind all clubs to submit donations along with the The Eliminate Project gift form.
