THE VOICE OF THE NEW ZEALAND AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY

DRIVEN BY PASSION FOR 100 YEARS

ACDelco batteries now distributed by R&J Batteries ACDELCO, ONE OF THE BEST-KNOWN NAMES IN THE AUTOMOTIVE AFTERMARKET INDUSTRY, HAS APPOINTED R&J BATTERIES TO DISTRIBUTE ITS AUTOMOTIVE BATTERIES IN NEW ZEALAND.

T

he new deal brings the partnership into line with R&J Batteries’ association with ACDelco in Australia. In fact, the battery distributor has been distributing ACDelco batteries throughout Australia for 18 years through company-owned branches and stockists before expanding its distribution footprint in New Zealand. ACDelco Product Development Manager at R&J Batteries, Matthew Everett, said: “R&J Batteries is excited to have been chosen to distribute the ACDelco battery brand in New Zealand. The ACDelco brand has strong ties in the New Zealand marketplace and has a long association with the General Motors brand and its dealers. “There are many synergies between R&J Batteries and ACDelco,” said Matthew. “Both

are respected and trusted brands, supply quality products, have ongoing product innovation and heavy involvement in motorsport just to name a few,” Matthew said. Matthew, who has worked closely with ACDelco over the years, said R&J Batteries’ long-standing partnership with ACDelco in Australia had grown from strength to strength. “To now be the national distributor for ACDelco Batteries in New Zealand makes that relationship even stronger, and creates great opportunities for continued sustained growth.” R&J Batteries entered New

Zealand’s highly competitive battery market in 2018 after establishing a successful business in Australia with 24 company-owned branches and a network of more than 8000 stockists. The battery distributor opened its first branch in Auckland but soon relocated to a larger distribution centre in Wiri to cater for increased demand for batteries throughout the North and South Islands. Since relocating to new premises, R&J Batteries has expanded its warehousing and distribution capacities significantly. It has gone on to open three other company-owned branches in Christchurch, Hamilton, and Albany. Adding ACDelco to its extensive brand portfolio in New Zealand is a significant milestone for R&J Batteries and its future operations in the country, said R&J Batteries New Zealand business manager Andy Lucas.

There’s a light at the end of the tunnel. The government has foreshadowed an end to Covid measures when Omicron has peaked. However, those measures are designed to flatten that peak as much as possible, which also pushes the peak back. While ICU admissions with Omicron remain low and therefore not newsworthy, the media focuses on the rapidly rising case numbers. Under current rules, what is significant about that is the impact the requirement for positive cases to isolate will have on NZ Inc. Obviously, those with symptoms should stay away from work and, as the government keeps saying, only those showing cold-like symptoms should consider getting tests. Meanwhile the Queen (95) tested positive for Covid in late February. The palace said: “Her Majesty is experiencing mild cold-like symptoms but expects to continue light duties at Windsor over the coming week.” Those light duties included sending her congratulations to the British women’s curling team on their Winter Olympics gold medal. If a 95-year-old monarch is already back at work, albeit on light duties, we can take heart from that. ‘Keep calm and carry on’ indeed.

2021 Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen's Holden team trusts ACDelco batteries

“R&J Batteries is now happy to offer a top-notch recognised brand like ACDelco to our customers in New Zealand. Since we have been distributing ACDelco batteries in Australia for nearly two decades, we have an already established support system and knowledge base to pull from for the benefit of our customers in New Zealand,” Andy said. “R&J Batteries is known for its range of world-class products, knowledgeable staff and outstanding customer service. We look forward to working closely with General Motors New Zealand to offer everything R&J Batteries is known for.” ACDelco is recognised as a world leader in the automotive aftermarket. Its backing by General Motors further strengthens the brand and reinforces its range of quality products. Having ACDelco Batteries widely distributed in New Zealand by R&J Batteries, which has over 26 years of experience in the battery industry, is the beginning of another powerful association. General manager (aftersales) at General Motors New Zealand Stephen Matthews said the partnership with R&J Batteries is part of a growth strategy. “As we look to develop the ACDelco battery business in New Zealand, supported by our existing Holden and Isuzu truck dealer network,

we see opportunities to grow the brand across the automotive sector, supporting customers with a quality product. We look forward to developing the relationship that will not only grow the business but secure our business for the future.” ACDelco has built a worldwide reputation as a premium source of experience, dependability, technology, and performance. This reputation is consistent across its range of batteries. Since the early 1970s, ACDelco has been at the forefront of battery innovation, pioneering the use of lead-calcium battery plates. The brand is also credited with developing the first mass-produced maintenance-free battery in the world. The current range of ACDelco batteries is designed to suit a wide spectrum of applications in categories such as automotive, commercial, high cycle marine, marine starting, garden and lawn, covering all business, residential and recreational battery needs.

ACDELCO AUTOMOTIVE BATTERIES The ACDelco range of automotive batteries consists of Premium (SMF), enhanced flooded battery (EFB), and absorbent glass mat (AGM). The Premium automotive range features sizes to suit

all makes and models of vehicles. Featuring leadcalcium alloy grid, full-frame technology plates and calcium/calcium chemistry, these batteries are built to meet or exceed original equipment specifications from manufacturers around the world. ACDelco EFB and AGM batteries are designed for modern stop/start vehicles which put extra demands on batteries compared with their conventional counterparts. These batteries are built to perform in extreme conditions and challenging situations. ACDelco EFB batteries are constructed with full frame positive and negative plates, giving them the durability and reliability needed by stop/start vehicles. The ACDelco AGM range represents the best in advanced battery technology. They are designed with high compression absorbent glass mat separators which significantly increase the cycle life and improves charge acceptance compared with standard flooded lead-acid batteries. These batteries provide high cranking power even when the state of charge is low.

ACDELCO COMMERCIAL BATTERIES The ACDelco range of commercial batteries provide both high cranking power and the reserve capacity needed for continual demand applications. The combination of commercial grade plates made from lead calcium alloy and liquid gas separator lids deliver a maintenance-free experience for commercial fleet and business operators across New Zealand. ACDelco Commercial batteries are built with the understanding that commercial vehicles are subjected to high mileage conditions and varied terrains on a regular basis. The commercial range batteries consist of tough PE separators and lock-bonded plate groups for the highest durability and service life.

ACDELCO MARINE STARTING AND HIGH CYCLE MARINE BATTERIES Marine Starting (M Series) and High Cycle Marine (HCM) batteries by ACDelco are designed for marine and recreational vehicles with demanding needs. The range’s characteristic expanded lead-calcium grids make ACDelco M and HCM series batteries more durable and powerful than batteries with conventional cast-type grids. The M series cranking batteries provide high cold cranking amps and improved vibration-resistance compared with traditional automotive batteries. The HCM series feature thicker plate grids and more active plate material than standard automotive batteries for increased performance. The HCM series are designed to be a dualpurpose battery which can crank and provide improved cycling ability when needed. Strong engine starting power and cycling ability make these batteries a suitable choice for a wide range of marine, RV and SUV applications. Both M and HCM series also feature dual-fit terminals for easy fitment of additional accessories.

ACDELCO GARDEN AND LAWNMOWER BATTERIES ACDelco garden and lawn mower batteries deliver high performance and a maintenancefree experience for consumers with garden and lawn mower machines. These batteries are built with lead-calcium expanded grids, protected by a rugged and durable polypropylene case and feature a heat-sealed case to increase leak resistance. Additional features and benefits of the ACDelco garden and lawn mower range include spark and flame arrestors, corrosion-resistance capability, low self-discharge rate and lug terminals to suit most mower and stationary engine fitments. These

numerous features and benefits make ACDelco garden and lawn mower batteries a suitable choice for garden applications needing a long battery life, powerful performance and hassle-free operation. Whether the application is automotive, commercial, marine or garden, ACDelco has a battery to meet almost any business, residential or recreational battery need. All ACDelco batteries are laboratory-tested, field-proven, and have

New generation Narva LED marine lamps A NEW DUAL-COLOUR LED MARINE FLOOD LAMP FROM NARVA NOT ONLY PROVIDES SUPERIOR LIGHTING FOR SAFER BOATING AT NIGHT, BUT ALSO INCORPORATES SPECIAL MATERIALS TO WARD OFF CORROSION.

J

ust released to the New Zealand market, the new Narva LED deck lamp features hard-wearing plastic materials in the body and bracket in place of the usual metal components. These tough new materials will prevent corrosion of the lamp and the lamp bracket. It will also prevent galvanic

corrosion, which occurs between dissimilar metals, on aluminium boats. “Anyone who has spent extended time in the marine industry knows that corrosion, especially galvanic corrosion on aluminium boats, needs to be managed correctly,” says Tim Paterson, Griffiths

www.jbweld.com www.jbweld.com

Equipment’s national sales manager. Griffiths Equipment distributes Narva automotive and marine lighting products throughout New Zealand. “With clever engineering these new deck lamps have solved this issue once and for all with an allnylon body and bracket.” Paterson says that traditionally the bracket would be stainless steel, but using a nylon bracket and nylon fixing hardware, including a nylon locknut and washer to fix the lamp to the boat, the opportunity for corrosion is severely restricted. The nylon bracket has been engineered to withstand shock and vibration testing to marine standard JIS D1601, ensuring it will not break in rough seas. The bracket can be rotated 360° for easy mounting. The installer has the option of using a single bolt or two screws when there is no access behind the mounting surface. The LEDs project a wide flood beam and feature dual-colour capability, easily switching from white to red when necessary to protect night vision. The white light has an output of 1000 Lumens at 5700K. The red light also provides plenty of light (623nm). Paterson says the new Narva LED deck lamp, specifically designed for marine environments, meets IP67 standards. Using LED technology, it draws very little current from the batteries (0.57A @12V for the white light). The new Narva LED deck lamp comes in white or black body finishes and is covered by Narva’s five-year LED warranty. Available from marine and automotive retailers throughout New Zealand.

New four-post lifts from Century CENTURY DISTRIBUTORS, WHICH REPRESENTS HESHBON LIFTS IN NEW ZEALAND, IS NOW LAUNCHING ITS OWN RANGE OF CENTURY BRAND FOUR-POST LIFTS

C

entury Distributors has had its own range of Century-branded two-post lifts, tyre changers, and wheel balancers in the market for more than 15 years. Seeing a growing need for a higher standard in four-post lift options, the company has developed the Century 4PK. The new lift is made by the same manufacturer as the CEN-4000B and CEN-2PKS two-post, clear floor lifts, meaning the CEN-4PK models offer the same quality, reliability, and value for money. Century Distributors was founded by John Jenkins and began importing vehicle workshop equipment in 1999. A reputation was built with the Heshbon brand, and 23 years later the business is still family run. The first model in the new four-post lineup is the 4PKS, a low-cost 4000kg flat platform maintenance lift. It has simplified controls for lower servicing costs. Next up is the 4PK-5000, a heavy-duty flat platform lift with Korean power-pack and a load rating of 5000kg, between 50-1000kg above the normal load for lifts in this category. It also has a remote control to control the main platform and jacking beams. The flagship model is the 4PKA-5000, a premium

wheel alignment lift with locking rear slip plates, and turntable recesses at the front. It includes blanking plates for the front turntables, allowing them to be removed so the lift can be used as a platform lift when needed. It also uses a Korean-made powerpack and electric remote control. All Century four-post lift models include a centre rolling jacking beam. Fittings for an optional second jack are already in place. As John Jenkins says, there’s no question about the new lifts’ long term dependability and

support as they come from the same factory that built the first Century two-post lifts 16 years ago, which are still in use to this day. Parts are stocked on the shelf and servicing is scheduled, meaning any repairs would come with minimal downtime. Common features include four-post corner locks, adjustable for levelling, galvanised lifting cables with safety brakes in case of emergency, 2,734mm between posts, and the lifts are assembled with top-quality imported parts. Prices include delivery and installation with some terms and conditions applying. In stock in dark gray, other colours are available on order. Finance and leasing options are also available for all budgets. Century Distributors is a Capricorn preferred supplier. For more information, or to view the selection of Century lifts, tyre changers, and balancers, visit centurydistributors.co.nz, call 04 567 1405, or email sales@centurydistributors.

OCEAN SUNSET AND OCEAN CORAL BIOLOGICAL PARTS WASHERS The Ocean Coral (large) and Ocean Sunset (medium) parts washers work through a combination of a non-toxic and non-flammable ‘BlueLiquid’ cleaning solution, coupled with ‘BlueTablets’ microorganism tablets. The microorganisms in the tablets are the biological bit. They break down and eat the grease, oil and dirt, continuously refreshing the cleaning bath. It is an ideal, effective, and economical solution for all workshop professionals concerned with protecting their own health, that of their staff, and the environment. The biological parts washer works with the BlueLiquid pH neutral cleaning solution maintained at 38°C. It is solvent-free, and non toxic. Corghi Artiglio Master — the last word in touchless tyre machines CORGHI’S ARTIGLIO MASTER RANGE OF TYRE MACHINES HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO NEVER TOUCH THE RIM

G

ary Cotterell of Automaster distributors says Corghi’s patented ‘Leva la leva’ Smart Corghi System is now available in a price range that has been impossible until now. Italian-made Corghi tyre machines offer tested constructive quality, competitive pricing, and unique technological solutions that have given the brand an unsurpassed technological advantage, and one of the strongest reputations in the business. It provides a unique solution with two clear advantages. Firstly, the tool heads work around the rim, maintaining a minimum clearance without ever touching it during any work phase, thanks to the fixed distance between the tool and the rim. Secondly, all tension on the tyre is annulled during the tyre demounting and mounting phases, thanks to the synchronised movement between the tools and the rim. Ergonomic and multifunctional consoles make it possible to set the positioning of the work tools in a quick, practical, and safe manner. The controls and tools are divided into three distinct work areas, making

it easy to recognise movements and control actions. The Master Jolly has a dynamic bead-breaking device with dual bead-breaker discs. The radial positioning of the discs is automated, removing the need for manual positioning by the operator. Controlled penetration, speed, and repeatability are guaranteed by the perfectly synchronised and symmetrical motions of the two bead-breaking discs in the patented system. The bead-breaking discs are also used in the rapid demounting procedure, which is particularly useful with stiff sidewalls. The unit also incorporates a wheel lifter for effortlessly placing wheels of any type onto the turntable, taking almost all of the physical effort out of tyre changing, which enables staff to stay fresh and focused. There is an optional model that provides an enhancement on the Corghi Master Jolly, and that is the ‘Automatic’ version with pneumatic wheel clamping.

its name implies, it handles 13-inch to 28-inch diameter wheels, up from the 12-inch to 26-inch range of the standard Artiglio Master Jolly. This more substantial machine has a more robust and ergonomically safer wheel lifter for heavier wheels, for example, and weighs in at 470kg, up from the standard model’s 440kg. As Gary says, despite countless attempts to copy it, Corghi’s Leva la leva technology remains unmatched, thanks to the Smart Corghi System’s patented features, which have been developed continuously since its introduction in 2001. For more information, and informative videos on Corghi’s Artiglio Master machines, see automaster.co.nz, or call Automaster on 0800 214 604. .

How to service aircon on hybrid vehicles HYBRID VEHICLES PRESENT A FEW NEW CHALLENGES WHEN IT COMES TO SERVICING THEIR AC SYSTEMS

H

ybrid vehicles use electric compressors which require special handling of servicing equipment so that there is no contamination of oils. The Mastercool Commander 3000-E air-conditioning recovery/recycle/recharge (RRR) machine is specifically designed for these vehicles. The 3000-E has options for both standard vehicles and hybrids, and incorporates a flush circuit using an add-on accessory that ensures there is no cross contamination when switching between types. The rising cost of refrigerant means RRR machines can now pay for themselves in one or two seasons, and their ability to perform almost an entire service unattended is a clear cost saving in a busy workshop. The Mastercool Commander 3000-E was designed in the US to be a reliable method of servicing vehicle aircon units. It is also continually improved through remote firmware updates, and the Commander has been updated to version 9.0. This update includes the addition of email printing via an option on the completed job screen. The vehicle’s registration number, refrigerant recovered, oil recovered, and refrigerant usage can be included. This information can be sent to the

ecords do not last very long these days at Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand. The company has registered 2810 vehicle sales for January, nearly doubling its January 2021 result of 1436 units. It also eclipsed even its previous all-time monthly high of 2312 units achieved in November last year. The results have led to Mitsubishi being crowned the number one passenger car and light commercial vehicle (LCV) brand for January, with a 22 percent market share. The new record was set with a twin-pronged approach featuring the Outlander and Triton ranges, contributing 1186 and 1118 sales respectively — both record results in their own right. Supply of the Triton ute was secured with a confident order for 5000 units in September — largely in support of a large customer base of trade, infrastructure, and agricultural workers —

ahead of the introduction of the government’s feebate scheme. Mitsubishi New Zealand’s head of marketing and corporate affairs Reece Congdon said the result was encouraging, especially when it doesn’t yet include the next generation Outlander PHEV which launches later this month. “The whole MMNZ family will rightly be celebrating what is another outstanding achievement for our business,” says Reece. “Outlander has long been a Kiwi family favourite and Triton just keeps winning more fans every year. Knowing that the number of happy Mitsubishi owners is also increasing across our full range of vehicles is something that keeps driving us to do better.

Excel. Remote diagnostics have also been improved with a drop-down service menu. Mastercool Commander is designed to meet the SAE J2788 standard, which means it must achieve a 95 percent refrigerant recovery rate with 95 percent purity within 30 minutes. For trucks or other large vehicles, the Commander has been tested to perform charges at 2.5kg or more. The charge hoses can be extended up to 10m without the need for recalibration. Other features include: • Manual and automatic functions. • 8-inch Windows tablet PC command centre. • Two programmable bottles for oil and/or dye injection with individual load cells (standard vehicles only). • Automatic and manual purging of noncondensable gases (NCGs). • Large Class 1.0 analogue gauges. • Multi-coloured visual system-status LED. • 142L/min vacuum pump. The machine includes on-board instructions with user prompts for each step. Remote set-up and training are also possible. The only machine maintenance required is a filter change and vacuum-pump oil change, prompted by alerts. Mastercool Inc is a US-based, family-owned company that has been in the air conditioning business for more than 35 years. Local service and technical back-up are available here through equipment specialists at Repco. For more information, contact a Repco equipment specialist on 0800 237-726.

“On that front, we are extremely excited to be introducing the Next Generation Outlander PHEV in the coming weeks, which will provide a compelling and practical solution for customers looking to reduce their carbon footprint. With 500 pre-orders waiting to be filled, that car is going to light up the segment.” Reece says the company is naturally keen to keep breaking records, so its focus on exceptional customer service is undiminished. “This, along with the talent and dedication throughout our business and dealer network, is what fuels our success. We are starting the year as we mean to go on.”

The inside line on shipping THE PANDEMIC HAS SEEN LOGISTICS SUPPLY LINES STRETCHED THIN AROUND THE GLOBE. WE TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT ONE ASPECT OF THE AUTOMOTIVE IMPORT INDUSTRY.

E

mpty shelves in supermarkets, hardware stores, building supply companies and in auto parts warehouses show there has been no quick fix to the bottleneck in supply to New Zealand. The shortfall in imports caused by production shutdowns because of Covid-19, is not easily made up when throughput at ports is already constrained and ship owners focus on meeting demand in American markets first. Debbie McKenzie, country general manager at Famous Pacific Shipping (New Zealand), has been in the freight forwarding business for many years and leads FPS into its 30th year of operations in New Zealand in 2022. Debbie says she has never experienced such turbulent times in the industry but has a positive outlook for the future.

THE CURRENT SITUATION “Covid-19 has impacted the international shipping industry significantly. A few factors are at play, the two most pressing are a shortage of labour and an increase in demand. “Significant labour shortages have arisen with new variants (most recently omicron) infecting port workforces, crew onboard vessels and transport operators (both road and rail) in most major ports around the world. “The labour shortages at the main ports of Los Angeles and Longbeach on the West Coast of the USA have resulted in over 100 vessels at anchorage awaiting berthing slots at the beginning of February 2022, up from 40 vessels this time last year. “Increased consumer spending around the world has meant significantly more demand for shipping

16

Auto Channel Issue #44 March 2022

space, driving up prices and adding to the difficult situation we find ourselves in today.”

ON THE UPSIDE “There are several new vessels due to be delivered from the shipyards to some larger shipping lines in 2023 and 2024. They have seen a 26 per cent increase in orders in fact, so there is hope within the industry that in 2023 things will be turning around. “Despite all the external factors affecting vehicle shipping, we continue to see a regular number of American muscle cars coming into New Zealand. Even the big auctions like Scottsdale have resumed after a year off due to the pandemic. “Famous Pacific Shipping continues to offer its bespoke one-stop-shop approach for vehicle shipping customers and has increased its commitment to industry events, sponsoring Beach Hop and Takapuna Rocks, because we love cars as much as our customers,” says Debbie.

HOW DOES THE SHIPPING PROCESS WORK? “For the team at FPS it’s all about making things as easy as possible for their clients. Transparency and communication are the key to making it work. “For first timers it can be a little unnerving but less so if you know what to expect.” Debbie walked us through the process of shipping a vehicle from the USA with FPS and answered some frequently asked questions along the way: “Once you have found your dream car or next purchase, give FPS a call. We can assist with collection of the vehicle from anywhere in the

USA. Costs for these services are obtained on a case-by-case basis, either in open or closed transport according to your needs. “An experienced team member will be your one point of contact throughout the entire process. From quote to picking up from our facility, they will update you on the major milestones as they are achieved. They will guide you through New Zealand Customs’ requirements prior to arrival, including assistance in applying for a New Zealand Customs Client Code, if required. “All pricing will be advised in writing and will include collection, consolidated shipping cost, insurance and other related costs. Once approved, FPS can get things underway. We can advise you of the calculation for the premium cost of marine insurance with quotes and strongly recommend this is undertaken. However, if you have your own insurance in place, please just advise our team member. “All insurance policies are arranged in the importer’s name for each shipment and are in place prior to vessel sailing. This insurance covers the shipment from vehicle loading through to the vehicle unloading in New Zealand. We can get this arranged through our broker once you confirm in writing. “Once all is confirmed, we get our specialised and experienced team in the US to contact your seller and get the ball rolling with booking the collection of the vehicle. “All vehicles being exported from the US must have the original title (the ‘pink slip’) and a ‘bill of sale’ confirming seller’s details, buyer’s details and the agreed value of the sale. These documents need to remain with the vehicle and must be included when the vehicle is collected by the transporter. The vehicle moves from the seller to our depot and on arrival at the facility, all vehicles are stored indoors, awaiting the booking with the shipping line to move the container to Auckland. “The pricing offered in the original quote is based on a consolidated container situation. This means shared space in a container. Three vehicles are needed to make the container viable. There can be some delays awaiting the other vehicles to move with your vehicle, but we will keep you informed on this.”

ALL ABOARD “Once all vehicles are on hand, they are processed through US Customs. The original titles for each vehicle are validated by US Customs, allowing them to leave the country, and the container is loaded. The title for your vehicle is then sent to FPS for delivery to you along with the vehicle once all cleared. “The containers are loaded by specialised and experienced loaders in the US. This team handles vehicles bound for all parts of the world. No two container loads are the same, so each container is individually loaded according to the vehicle combination. Your vehicle will be loaded in the most secure and safest way possible. “All containers with used motor vehicles inside must be fumigated at origin following container loading. This is to meet the mandatory Brown Marmorated Stink Bug regulations put in place by the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) from 1 October until 30 April (updated annually). Fumigation is handled by our team in the US onsite at their facility.

Debbie McKenzie, Country GM, Famous Pacific Shipping

Famous Pacific Shipping has increased its commitment to industry events, sponsoring Beach Hop and Takapuna Rocks, because we love cars as much as our customers “Now the container is ready to load on board the vessel and begin the trip to New Zealand. FPS uses direct services, so the container remains on board the vessel until it arrives in New Zealand.

Due to the current shipping crisis, we have seen these direct transit times extend out to 35 to 45 days recently, as shipping lines change and find the most efficient routes to New Zealand. “Throughout the process and journey to New Zealand, our team member will be in touch with updates and documentation, keeping you informed of progress and what is needed at each stage. “On arrival, the container is taken to our Auckland facility. It is unloaded by our own team of specialists and the vehicles move into our warehouse for undercover storage until fully cleared by New Zealand Customs and MPI. “Customs clearance is handled in-house, and your contact will guide you through any additional documentation required. Clearance is started prior to arrival into New Zealand, but sometimes is not completed until New Zealand Customs can inspect the vehicle or goods. FPS pays all charges to New Zealand Customs on your behalf. These will be billed in the final invoice for all services to you. “All second-hand vehicles imported into New Zealand must be cleared by the Ministry of Primary Industries. This is arranged once the vehicle is unpacked from the container. If instructed by MPI following the initial inspection, then cleaning onsite takes place, before a re-inspection is completed. Our cleaning process is geared to meet MPI requirements — it is not a valet clean! “Following final MPI and Customs release, the vehicle has a final border check to verify its VIN number and structural integrity. These details are entered into the NZTA website, for matching at the time of final compliance before the vehicle goes on the road. We do not arrange final compliance; this is handled by specialised professionals in this field. “When all is complete, we will issue the final

invoice, to match your quote. You can then collect your vehicle from us — and enjoy!”

TRAPS FOR YOUNG PLAYERS There are some pitfalls to look out for. Here are a few in Debbie’s experience: “You must be certain the vehicle has the original title with it. If it does not, then the vehicle cannot be exported. Should this happen, it certainly cannot be registered for use on New Zealand roads — a very costly mistake. “Often the photos and information provided do not give the true account of the vehicle’s condition or issues. It is best to have someone look at it for you if possible. Let us know if you require this assistance, as we have a team ready to check cars for you as needed. “Lastly, making payments can be very stressful, especially when paying a private individual — again our team can assist. We can facilitate the payment to the seller once our team in the US has the funds. This way they have sighted the car and title in advance and can then transfer the funds on your behalf. “So now you know how it works and what to avoid, the current challenges in the industry and what this means for you if you’re considering importing a vehicle. You can approach the process with eyes wide open,” says Debbie The above is a simple overview of the process. Famous Pacific Shipping’s experienced team is on hand to help at all stages of an arranged vehicle importation. AS focuses on core rotating electrical business AS-GROUP NZ’S PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE AND TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE IS WHAT MAKES THEM SUCCESSFUL IN THE ALTERNATOR, STARTER AND IGNITION PARTS BUSINESS

O

wner, sales manager and technical director Blair Rosson says he spotted an opportunity to start the business in 2011 when one of the two main distributors in these components in New Zealand went out of business. That might have indicated this was not a good business to get into, but as that left the market to complete units, and Blair as a technician and repairer wanted parts and components, he looked overseas to find them. “There were manufacturers in Europe who were happy to supply components into New Zealand, so I started doing that to support my own business but then I was buying parts for others too,” says Blair. He is now the authorised New Zealand

Blair Rosson at AS-Group NZ

distributor for Polish alternator and starter motor company AS-PL but has grown the business to bring in +Line, based in Holland, as well as OEM equipment from Bosch, Valeo and Denso. AS-Group NZ’s stock of complete alternators and starters has grown to more than 1300 individual part numbers and their ignition range has grown to

more than 200 part numbers. “We are still growing our +Plusline range of aftermarket alternators with OEM regulators and OEM clutch pulleys, specifically for late model European cars.” Blair says the business has stayed focused on the rotating electrical equipment. “There’s a lot of other auto electrical equipment we haven’t got into.” He says that’s the key difference between ASGroup NZ and other suppliers — that he knows the subject well based on his own practical experience in the repair and reconditioning business. “There are a lot of suppliers in the parts business who have never touched the components they sell,” he says. Another key difference is the testing equipment they source and supply, including testers for computer-controlled alternators. As he uses the equipment personally, he can provide expert advice to others. AS-Group is also the AutoDiagger diagnostic tool distributor for Australasia. AutoDiagger is another proven Polish brand. “We just focus on the core components, on the things we do well,” he says. “It’s our knowledge that sets us apart.” Blair says his Paraparaumu business is going to have to take on more staff soon but he needs to find new and bigger premises first. AS-Group is a Blackfern supplier. Any Blackfern member that enquires or purchases product through AS Group in March goes in the draw for 5000 Blackfern reward points. For more information, see www.as-parts.nz or call Blair on 0800 727 000.

Truck owners ‘ICEing’ charging stations US truck owners have come up with a new way to signal their displeasure at progress. The Daily Mail recently ran a story citing Tesla owners on Reddit who had seen trucks ‘ICEing’ charging stations — deliberately blocking a

charging bay with an internal combustion engine, usually a very thirsty one. It seems to be a growing trend around the United States, with commercial and consumer vehicles alike participating in the anti-EV movement. The initial report from Daily Mail referenced Tesla owners in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas who had experienced ICEing. In North Carolina, a trio of Tesla superchargers were blocked by a Ford truck and two Chevys, all of which were being piloted by drivers who were chanting “F— Tesla.” After the petrol station attendant was informed of what was going on, the truck drivers left, leaving the Tesla owner shaken. Laws have been passed in Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Washington that prohibit nonelectric vehicles from parking in charging spots. A handful of large cities have also passed by-laws

to keep those charging spots open; they include Washington D.C., Seattle, Baltimore, Raleigh in North Carolina, and Knoxville. Hopefully, the trend won’t catch on here.

Next-Gen Ranger Raptor ramps up off-road performance THE NEXT GENERATION FORD RANGER RAPTOR HAS ARRIVED. THE SECONDGENERATION RANGER RAPTOR RAISES THE OFF-ROAD PERFORMANCE BAR AS A UTE BUILT FOR TRUE ENTHUSIASTS The new Ranger Raptor was developed by the Australian design and engineering team to be the ultimate performance derivative of the Next-Gen Ranger. “We’ve really focused on delivering a genuine performance truck with the Next-Gen Ranger Raptor,” said Dave Burn, Ford Performance chief programme engineer. “It’s significantly faster, looks incredible, is packed with new features, and is the strongest Built Ford Tough Ranger we’ve ever made.”

MORE POWER The big news is the introduction of a new 3.0-litre V6 Twin Turbo EcoBoost engine, producing up to 292kW (392hp) at 5650rpm, and 583Nm of torque at 3500rp — a significant boost in power and torque over the current 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo diesel engine.

The 3.0-litre V6 Twin Turbo EcoBoost engine boasts a compacted graphite-iron cylinder block, which is around 75 percent stronger and up to 75 percent stiffer than the iron used in traditional castings. Raptor’s anti-lag system — available in Baja2 mode — keeps the turbochargers spinning for up to three seconds after the driver backs off the throttle, allowing for faster resumption of acceleration out of corners or between gears when the driver gets back on the accelerator. The 3.0-litre is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission — each gear is programmed with its own boost profile and drivers can choose their preferred engine sound by pressing a button on the steering wheel, or by selecting the relevant drive mode from the seven on offer.

UNIQUE CHASSIS The Next-Gen Ranger Raptor has a unique chassis when compared to other Next-Gen Rangers. A series of unique mounts and reinforcements has been designed for elements including the C-pillar, load box, and spare wheel. Unique frames for the jounce bumper, shock tower, and rear shock bracket all combine to ensure the Next-Gen Ranger Raptor can handle punishing off-road conditions. A high-performance off-roader needs the running gear to match, and Next-Generation Ranger Raptor’s suspension is completely

redesigned. It has new lightweight aluminium upper and lower control arms, long-travel front and rear suspension, and refined Watt’s link equipped coil-spring rear suspension. The suspension hardware is from Fox, tuned and developed by Ford Performance. Ranger Raptor’s rough terrain capability is enhanced with underbody protection made from 2.3mm-thick, high-strength steel. The front bash plate is almost double the size of the standard Ranger bash plate. For the first time, Ranger Raptor gets an advanced permanent four-wheel drive system with an all-new electronically controlled ondemand two-speed transfer case, combined with front and rear locking differentials, a feature that hardcore off-roaders will appreciate. “We really wanted the Baja mode to be the ultimate expression of off-road, high-speed capability,” said Burn. “It’s a feature at the core of what the Ranger Raptor customer expects.” The interior features orange accents on the instrument panel and trim, and seats are enhanced by Raptor’s ambient lighting, which illuminates the interior in an amber glow. Next-Generation Ranger Raptor boasts a fully digital cabin, with a high resolution 12.4-inch digital cluster, and 12-inch centre touchscreen and entertainment system, which offers both Apple and Android6 wireless smartphone connectivity.

Nearproduction sketches reveal new 2022 Amarok A new Amarok will be launched on the global market in 2022 with a host of new features. VW says these include driver assistance systems that are new in this segment that are designed to make daily driving more comfortable for future Amarok customers. It is also intended to have better off-road characteristics, including greater ground clearance. The new pick-up from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in Hanover sticks with a V6TDI which should please existing diesel ute fans.

The exterior of the new Amarok is more defined and the interior has also been enhanced. VW says the comfort, operating concept, connectivity, and ambience in the all-new interior will raise the benchmark for the ute market globally. “The expressive front designs of our pick-up with a charismatic Amarok signature that is also found in very large letters on the cargo box at the rear is sported very proudly by the Amarok,” says Albert-Johann Kirzinger, head of design at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. A standard Euro pallet fits between the wheel housings again and loads can be safely secured. The exterior of the new Amarok has grown 10cm in length to 5.35 metres and its body will also be wider than the current version, giving more legroom in the second row. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ Amarok has been in series production since 2010. More than 815,000 vehicles were sold in 12 years. Developed by teams in Australia and Europe, the latest version of premium pick-up will be produced in Silverton in South Africa in future. Its name means ‘wolf’ in North American Inuit.

General Motors has patented an idea that would turn a vehicle into a video game controller. The patent filing focuses on using the steering wheel and pedals to control the car in the game which would display on the car’s console screen. Documentation says gaming controllers or joysticks would also work, so passengers could also play. Presumably this tech would work while the car is parked, making the car a virtual driving cockpit. The filing also lists wackier potential uses, such as a driver activating the game while driving, and the vehicle’s various sensors would combine their data to create a virtual representation of the surroundings. Weather sensors could amp up the virtual reality, adding heavier rain or snow for example or, if driving on an especially hot day, the surroundings would appear to melt. GM’s patent doesn’t say how the company intends to use this tech in the real world.

Overseas trend to be mirrored here? In what may be a trend we also see here as petrol prices sky rocket, UK data also shows a stunning acceleration in the average time it takes for a used EV to sell. On average, in December a used EV sold in just 26 days, which is 8 days faster than the average time it takes for a used petrol vehicle to sell (34) and 4 days faster than a used diesel (30). This in turn dropped 18 days from the start of 2021, when they used to take an average of 44 days to sell. According to AutoTrader UK’s Fastest Selling Index, the 2016 Nissan Leaf (automatic) was the fastest-selling used car in the UK in 2021, taking an average of just 17 days to leave forecourts. This reflects the recent surge in demand for electric and low-emission vehicles. The top 10 included the electric Leaf’s French counterpart, the Renault Zoe (2018, automatic), which was 2019’s fastest-selling used car. It took an average of just 20 days to leave forecourts, making it 2021’s seventh fastest-selling used car. Two petrol-hybrids also made it onto the list: the 2016 Toyota Prius (automatic) and the 2016 Toyota Yaris

(automatic), taking an average of 19 days and 20 days respectively to sell. AutoTrader’s data shows that engagement in electric cars on its site is up 74 per cent year on year. One in five new car searches on its marketplace is for an EV. Topping the list for the most viewed EV last year is Ford’s new fully electric

SUV, the Mustang Mach-E, which fended off stiff competition from the already iconic Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Volkswagen ID.3, which came in second and third place respectively. The Mach-E is the only pure electric vehicle to make it onto the coveted list of top 10 viewed new cars in 2021, reaching an impressive 9th position.

Ford tests footsteps Would modern cars’ driver alerts work much better if they simulated the sounds — and the direction of sounds — made by potential hazards, such as pedestrians and bicycles? Ford is trialling the use of in-car audio to convey the location of other road users or pedestrians. In addition, they are testing the use of recognisable sounds — such as footsteps, bicycle bells, and the sound of passing cars — rather than a single tone. Initial tests revealed that drivers using ‘Directional Audio Alerts’ were significantly more accurate when it came to identifying potential hazards and their position. “Today’s warning tones inform drivers when they need to take care and be vigilant. Tomorrow’s technology could alert us to both exactly what the hazard is and where it is coming from,” said Oliver Kirstein, SYNC software engineer, Enterprise Connectivity, Ford Europe. Ford vehicles currently use a suite of sensors to identify when pedestrians, cyclists, and other

vehicles are nearby to generate visual and audible alerts and apply emergency braking if necessary. Directional audio alert takes these warnings a step further. Ford-developed software uses information from the sensors to select an appropriate sound and play it through the speaker closest to the obstacle. Tests in a simulated environment showed that drivers alerted by directional audio correctly identified the nature and source of the hazard 74 percent of the time. Even just emitting a regular tone from the appropriate speaker enabled the driver to correctly identify the location of the

object 70 percent of the time. Engineers also set up a real-world scenario on the test track, with a vehicle backing out of a parking space, an approaching pedestrian, and the footsteps alert. Participants in the test responded positively to the footsteps sound, especially when this intuitive alert was played through a specific speaker. In future, engineers believe that those results might be further improved by using 3D spatial sound similar to that used in cinemas and gaming to better enable drivers to identify the source of the hazard.

Which diagnostic scan tool should I buy? DIAGNOSTIC SCAN TOOLS ARE AS IMPORTANT AS A SPANNER, IF NOT MORE SO THESE DAYS — BUT WHICH ONE TO CHOOSE?

C

hoosing a spanner is easy but which of the bewildering array of scanners available, all claiming to be the answer to your prayers, is really the best for you? You need to do some diagnosis on yourself first. Victor Li, of Launch Tech Australia, suggests you ask yourself, “What are my expectations? What am I going to use the diagnostic tool for? What is my budget?” “It’s a good idea to find out how many vehicle manufacturers are standard and how many years of free updates and downloads there are. More importantly, how often do they update the tool? It’s best to stick to a big brand name that will give you local support and a warranty with technical support. “Then you’ll want to know how quickly the machine processes the vehicle information. Does it come with all the pre-OBD connectors, or are they optional? Can it diagnose 12v and 24v, and work on cars and trucks too? “Service reset functionality is extremely important. When you have diagnostic lights illuminated on the dash, the customer expects the mechanic to have the ability to reset them: Oil, Service, DPF, ABS, SRS, TCM, TPMS, etcetera. Customers will go to workshops that offer these services.”

26

Auto Channel Issue #44 March 2022

Victor also has some feedback from the frontline: “We have noticed a massive uptake in the X431 AUSCAN series and, to our surprise, it looks as if it is the best-performing scan tool on the market, bar none. Feedback from local workshops has all been positive. “It has standard 75 car manufacturers, with the ability to add more than 40 truck manufacturers 12/24v. The standard car package has two years’ free software downloads and there are updates nearly every week. The pre-OBD plugs are also

included, along with local support and warranty with technical support too. “The new AUSCAN 3 has even more service reset functionality and a stand to use the tool upright. Some online programming has been added as standard, and an optional pass-through box is available. The OBD extension cable is splash-proof IP-rated. “The new AUSCAN 3 creates a professional report that can be emailed, Bluetoothed, or printed for the customer. It will have vehicle and workshop details for a professional look.” Launch is the market leader in this market, selling more than 170,000 diagnostic units worldwide last year. Ask your retailer for a demonstration. Please call the official Launch dealer, AECS, on 06 874 9077 for more information.

Top tips for tyre bays TREADWAY EQUIPPED, WHICH SPECIALISES IN DESIGNING STREAMLINED PROCESSES AROUND NEW WORKSHOP EQUIPMENT GIVES US ITS TOP FIVE TYRE BAY TIPS

G

iven Treadway Equipped’s experience in rightsizing equipment purchases and designing workshop solutions that maximise efficiency from investments in new equipment, we asked the company what are the top five questions workshop owners and managers should ask when setting up a tyre bay. Treadway Equipped’s Loren Bill gave us the answers. Should I lease or buy the gear? “This depends on the initial capital you have available to invest but leasing is becoming very popular now. It has several features. It helps to conserve cash, giving you a fixed monthly cost to budget with, and it makes it easy to upgrade or replace equipment — which is improving all the time — without another big outlay. Typically, tyre equipment depreciates fast giving it low residual value at the end of its life, which makes leasing more attractive. Another key benefit of leasing is it helps you keep your gear up to date, your workshop looking modern, and it keeps staff safe by giving you the option to replace it for a new machine at the end of the term.”

How quickly will I pay off the equipment? “Obviously, this depends on the volume of tyres you are changing, but here’s a scenario: A workshop that invests in mid-range equipment costing $ 9800 plus GST and changing around 12 standard passenger tyres per day would expect to have the equipment paid off in 10 weeks, based on a net profit percentage of 10 per cent. Treadway Equipped can help you prepare a break-even and profitability chart based on your volumes and investment.” What gear is best suited for my workshop? “Look at the area you are servicing and assess the range of tyres you will be dealing with. Is it mostly passenger, or 4WD? Are you doing any truck or agricultural tyres? Once you are clear on this, we can help specify the most suitable equipment. For example, if you are doing heavier 4WD and light truck tyres, we would recommend the Steiner ST480 Truck & Passenger Balancer that comes with a built-in wheel lifter. You also need to look at the volumes you plan to change. I you are setting up a dedicated tyre shop and expecting to have the equipment working consistently throughout

the day, you will be better suited with a premium machine like a Fasep, Corghi or Hunter. However, if you are a workshop that is adding a tyre bay and expect to do a few sets a day, you would be better suited with a mid-range machine like a Steiner ST260 Tyre Changer. It’s all about making sure you get the best ROI on your investment and having gear that’s fit for purpose.” How much will I have to spend to set up? “There are a few key assets needed for a tyre bay: a tyre changer, wheel balancer, trolley jacks, impact wrenches and a compressor — but you may already have a compressor. An entry level setup could be as low as $5873 plus GST. A premium setup could cost around $23,500 + GST. The most important thing is to have equipment that is fit for purpose.” How much space will I need? “Ideally for a single car bay setup you would need around 56m2. For the equipment we would recommend 2.8m deep by 3m long. Remember, a tilt-back tyre changer has to sit out 800mm from the wall. If you do have a corner that you can position the tyre changer in it is definitely a space saving as the tilt head can tilt back into the corner. For the working area around the vehicle, ideally you want to allow 6m wide by 8m long. This will allow you to have at least 2m either side of the vehicle for positioning jacks and removing and fitting wheels.” Treadway Equipped helps tyre shops and vehicle service centres grow their revenue with advice and equipment right-sized for their customers’ business needs. Multimeter tips and tricks GET TO KNOW THE MULTIMETER IN YOUR TOOLBOX AND TAP INTO A RANGE OF METER TRICKS THAT WILL HELP YOU WITH DIAGNOSTICS

T

he digital multimeter can be one of the most valuable tools you have in your tool box if you know how to use its potential. Most multimeters contain a voltmeter, ohmmeter, and ammeter in one package. Many multimeters include a dedicated diode test and other useful features such as a digital thermometer display and tachometer function, when coupled with the proper accessories. You will know terms like analogue, digital, and auto ranging, but here we’ll look at more advanced multimeter features such as 4½ digit mode, Peak-Hold/Relative Delta, Min-Max sampling rates and other practical multimeter tricks.

ANALOGUE METERS If your workshop doesn’t have a quality analogue voltmeter to connect to a charging system, you may want to hang on to an instrument like the one in Fig. 1. Watching for a steady or flickering needle on an analogue voltmeter is much easier than trying to interpret flickering numbers on a multimeter. This Simpson 260 meter from the ’60s is still in production today. Like their modern digital counterparts, the quality and features of these instruments is variable, so they are not all good. Many lesser quality analogue multimeters had internal impedances (resistance) that were low enough to load sensitive circuits like ECM 5-volt sensors to the point where a false reading occurred. Some could even damage the 0.45 voltage regulator inside the ECM that fed a bias voltage to the O2 sensor signal wire. A very cheap digital multimeter has the potential to do the same thing. However, when measuring solid state related circuits (modules, sensors, etc.) and circuits involving airbags, always use a multimeter rated with at least 10 MΩ impedance. Not all analogue meters are low impedance, nor are all digital meters high impedance. For most circuits in modern electronic systems, a high input impedance meter will be essentially ‘invisible’ to the circuit and associated modules. If you are considering updating your current multimeter, besides looking for a minimum of 10 MΩ input impedance, look for an instrument that is rugged and has a large, easy-to-read display. A backlight is a must, as is a kickstand to set the meter upright. High-quality banana-type universal leads are essential. Fig. 1

AUTO RANGING OR MANUAL RANGING

MIN/MAX/AVERAGE

Maths is not everyone’s favourite pastime but you can add digits in your head to determine if the reading is showing a good circuit/component or a bad one. Plus if you use a manual ranging meter you can lose time just trying to guess what range to start with. Turn the manual meter to the range of volts, amps or ohms (Fig. 2) that your DUT (Device Under Test) is closest to. The problem is many times we don’t have a clue where to start unless the DUT is a 12-volt circuit, coil primary winding, or some other obvious item. The chart in Fig. 3 can help you get started. When in doubt, always go with the highest range and work your way down until you’re displaying a reading that’s applicable. Or better yet, update your meter to an auto ranging model that powers up in auto range mode and allows you to manually select a range if you so desire, giving you the best of both worlds.

This feature is underutilised by many techs. Many multimeters will produce an audible beep when a new minimum or maximum measurement has been hit. Most meters allow you to simply press the Min/Max button to begin. To use this extremely helpful function, set up your Device Under Test (DUT) or circuit and start measuring ohms, amps, volts, duty cycle, or frequency just like always. If you suspect an intermittent connection in a circuit or module, ensure you have rock solid connections with your meter and go to town tapping, tugging, flexing, heating, cooling, road testing, etc. while the meter is in Min/Max mode. When you’re satisfied you’ve recreated all the gremlin-producing manoeuvres you can think of, go back to the multimeter and press through the Min/Max button sequences to observe what the extremes were. On most multimeters with this feature, an average value will be one of the sequences in addition to the minimum and maximum value the meter recorded. Many multimeters on the market, such as Fluke, allow for the speed of the samples of values captured during Min/Max functions to be changed (Figures 4, 5). In most cases, faster is better.

Fig. 2 Fig. 4

Fig. 5 Fig. 3

29

Some multimeters have a fixed rate for capturing glitches. This Fluke model 87 III series allows the user to enter the Min/Max mode and select the speed for updating the Min/Max recording samples by pressing the button marked ‘Peak Min Max’ to change from the default of a 100ms capture rate (Fig. 4) to a 1ms capture rate. (Fig. 5) The ‘Hold’ button is featured on a variety of quality multimeters on the market. It is a very useful feature if you are trying to catch intermittents. When your meter’s display changes to a value indicating an intermittent problem ‘may’ have occurred, simply press the ‘Hold’ button to freeze whatever is on the screen to allow you to scrutinise the value more thoroughly. Button naming and function varies greatly from multimeter brand to brand, and even within a single brand from model to model. Make sure you can access the user manual for your multimeter to learn which advanced features it has and how to control them to get more from your meter.

begin to vary, even though there is nothing wrong with the circuit!

MORE DIGITS — 4½ DIGIT MODE More digits can give you more resolution when it comes to very low values in a measurement. When measuring something like a power ground, it’s not that important whether the resistance in that ground circuit is 0.3 or 0.2 ohms. If that ground is for a radio antenna, CAN bus shield wire, etc., the hair splitting can matter. Meters vary in how they allow you to enter this higher resolution mode, but the ones I’ve had with the feature have a button marked ‘4½ Digits’ that you hold down (Fig. 7) while you turn the meter from off to your desired measurement category. Instead of one decimal point to the right of the whole number (ohms), there are now two. Now that RFI shield ground for that new

RELATIVE DELTA More and more high-end multimeters are sporting the relative data feature. On some meters, the abbreviation ‘DEL’ next to a triangle symbol is the button for this function. On other meters, the button is simply marked ‘Zero’. The triangle symbol represents the Greek letter Delta. Sometimes Delta refers to a rate of change. In the case of multimeters, ‘rate of change’ is the most descriptive term for this feature. Often techs spot this button, clip their leads together, and turn the meter on to Ohms. They know that when they are measuring a small bit of resistance in their leads they can press that button and the ohmmeter will go from 0.2 ohms (for example) to 0.0 ohms. So it zeros the ohmmeter, right? Well, kind of.

radar/smart camera you’re trying to diagnose can be accurately measured down to the hundredth of an ohm. This type of feature activation is called a ‘Power Up’ setting and is used in meters from Snap On, OTC, and Fluke. (above) Fig. 7 - Spot the exta digit to the right of the decimal point? Meters like the one pictured have a feature called 4½ digit mode to give you the resolution needed to measure exacting circuits where a few hundredths of an ohm can make a difference.

(above) Figure 6 - This meter is connected to a 5-volt reference circuit. Why is it showing 00.04 volts? Is it shorted to ground? The answer is no! Notice the triangle shape next to the meter’s reading? That’s the indication you’ve activated REL ∆ mode. Whatever reading your meter was displaying prior to entering this mode becomes the new ‘0’. Changes in my 5-volt ref circuit in this case are minor. The circuit is good. Relative Delta actually takes whatever the meter was displaying and sets that as the ‘new zero’ reading. Any changes in the measurement from that point forward then registers on the meter. This function is not only useful in watching for a change in the resistance of a good connection when you wiggle and tug on wiring, it can also be used for virtually any other function of the meter. Say, for example, you are measuring a 5-volt reference circuit suspected of having an intermittent drop out. Connect your multimeter between ref low and 5-volt ref with the meter set to DC volts. Now press the Relative Delta button. The meter will immediately display ‘0’. If any loss of voltage or ref low (a.k.a. signal ground) in the circuit occurs while you have the meter connected, the meter will show you that loss. It’s an alternative to looking at the meter and wondering “did this circuit just lose 0.2 volts or was it at 4.8 volts all along?” Relative Delta will tell you exactly how much was lost (or gained). This advanced multimeter feature is picking up in popularity on newer meters, but should be used only on circuits that are steady. Steady voltage, resistance, frequency, etc. but steady. You wouldn’t use REL ∆ to sweep a TPS signal. The ‘0’ you are looking to maintain will quickly

White lithium grease vs silicone lubricant — which to choose? BOTH WHITE LITHIUM AND SILICONE LUBRICANTS WILL WORK IN SOME SITUATIONS, BUT WD-40 DISTRIBUTORS E-PRODUCTS NZ PROVIDES SOME USEFUL ADVICE ON WHICH ONE TO USE WHEN

L

ithium greases and silicone lubricants have different specialties and knowing the difference to pick the best product for the job will protect and maximise the productivity of your equipment. WD-40’s specialist range has both HighPerformance White Lithium Grease and Silicone Lubricant. There are so many uses for lithium grease lubricant, so it is handy to have it in your toolbox. It has a high cling factor which makes it ideal for equipment exposed to harsh weather conditions. WD-40’s White Lithium Grease withstands temperatures from minus 30-150°C. This lithium grease is formulated for metal-on-metal lubrication. It also offers rust protection and reduces friction and wear, which provides great long-term lubrication. White lithium grease also has a high viscosity, water-resistant formula (on dry film), which means it sprays without dripping or running and will resist water (on dry film). White Lithium Grease spray is ideal for car or boot hinges, bearings, gear or piston mechanisms

or on equipment that is out in the elements like boats, tractors, trucks, or industrial machinery. When considering your choice between White Lithium Grease vs Silicone Lubricant, think about the range of operating temperatures and the materials that the equipment is made from. This will ensure you are always reaching for the right product for the job. If you find yourself with a metal-onmetal mechanism that needs some lubrication, reach for WD-40’s High Performance White Lithium Grease. Unlike lithium grease, silicone lubricant is widely known to be ideal for rubber surfaces, but it is also extremely versatile, so it can be used on most other materials, including metal, plastic, wood,

and even painted materials. Along with its lubricating properties, silicone lubricant is waterproofing and prevents moisture from penetrating into the surface, which causes corrosion and rusting. The application of silicone lubricant is fast and simple and it does not attract any dirt or grime. Another one of the advantages of silicone lubricant is that it can handle different environments, such as window seals, doors, plumbing fittings, tools, valves, linkages, and other equipment. It is also effective throughout the year, in most weather conditions. If you are looking for an effective, versatile lubricant, pick up a bottle of WD-40 High Performance Silicone Lubricant and add it to your toolbox. There are so many advantages of silicone lubricant, and it is a great product to have on hand to prevent damage to your tools, and extend their lives. The WD-40 specialist range, including White Lithium Grease and Silicone Lubricant, are available from automotive and hardware stores, alongside the familiar cans of WD-40.

We all know how important it is to maintain the integrity of your brakes. When brakes and all their associated parts are kept clean, they perform more smoothly and last longer as well. Precision required in exhaust gas recirculation WHILE EVS ARE TOUTED AS A WAY TO REDUCE EXHAUST GAS EMISSIONS FROM THE PASSENGER FLEET, ESTABLISHED EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION TECHNOLOGY HAS A KEY ROLE TO PLAY

T

he debate on reducing passenger car emissions is dominating the headlines. Calls are increasingly being made for the use of alternative drives. However, the already established technology of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) can make an important contribution to reducing emissions. Increasingly strict emission regulations around the world have driven significant advances in EGR technology. Systems with cooled exhaust gas recirculation have been increasingly required since the introduction of the Euro 4 emissions standard in order to achieve the relevant exhaust gas limits. EGR coolers have been installed in almost all vehicles since Euro 5. Euro 6 then made it necessary to have low-pressure EGR in addition to highly cooled EGR to achieve the permissible level of nitrogen oxide emissions. No end seems to be in sight: the demand for increasingly efficient components is growing rapidly. Cooled exhaust gas recirculation reduces the oxygen content in the air-fuel mixture by adding exhaust gas, and therefore decreases the combustion temperature in the cylinders. Since harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) predominantly occur at high temperatures and pressures, NOx

concentrations can thus be reduced by up to 50 per cent — before they are released into the environment. The formation of soot particulates is also decreased by approximately 10 per cent in diesel engines through exhaust gas recirculation. Pierburg is a pioneer in the business of offering exhaust gas recirculation solutions. Pierburg has been producing EGR valves at its plant in Neuss, Germany, since 1970. The company is now the European market leader in this technology for emission control and reduction of consumption in the engine. It produces a wide range of EGR coolers and valves as an OEM supplier for numerous state-of-the-art vehicles. Its sister company, Motorservice, which is responsible for aftermarket activities, provides the independent aftermarket with these high-quality products. The current trend in exhaust gas recirculation is for compact modules made from aluminium with an integrated EGR valve, bypass flap and additional attachments such as oil coolers and oil filters. It is important that the components

are coordinated precisely to one another as well as to the relevant engine. Only in this manner can they guarantee full functionality. For this reason, it is advisable to replace worn or faulty components with an equivalent spare part. Although EGR components are not high-wear parts, a failure may still occur during the life of the engine. Pierburg provides an extensive range of EGR parts for all European vehicle brands. For more information on Pierburg’s EGR range, contact All Euro Parts on 0800 255 387 or see alleuroparts.co.nz.

THE EVERGREEN LAND ROVER PHILIP PARKER’S METICULOUS RESTORATION OF A SERIES 2 LAND ROVER — THE VERY BEST KIND — DELIGHTS EVERYONE THAT SEES IT BY IAN PARKES

I

f Helensville-born Philip Parker is right about this — and there’s no reason to think he isn’t — this is a sight we will see a lot more of: no-expense-spared, fully restored Land Rovers. Since Jaguar Land Rover stopped making the Defender in 2016, ending a near 70-year run of the original recipe Land Rover, the value of these cars has continued to rise. The new 90 and 110 Land Rovers launched last year only really underscore the point. While they have interiors that pay tribute to the Land Rover’s utilitarian origins — trim fitted with exposed screw heads and so on — they are tricked out with every modern convenience so will be equally at home battling the rugged terrain of Remuera as the manicured hinterland of Central Hawke’s Bay

34

Auto Channel Issue #44 March 2022

and Canterbury. In reality, they are much more of a tribute to the original Range Rover than the Landy. They even look a lot more like a Discovery than a Defender. Certainly chemicals and fracking magnate Sir James Ratcliffe — whose Ineos organisation backed the UK America’s Cup challenge and who owns the Ineos Grenadiers cycling team (formerly Team Sky) — thinks Land Rover missed the mark with the new vehicle. It left a large enough gap in the market for him to create his own version of a heritage Land Rover in the upcoming Grenadier fourwheel drive. But of course only the Land Rover is the original, and the growing affection for that classic vehicle currently knows no bounds.

The recent visit to New Zealand of ‘Cambridge’ gave some indication of the depth of the affection for them here. Cambridge was one of the two Land Rovers that students from Oxford and Cambridge drove overland to Singapore in 1955, at one stroke establishing Land Rover’s global reputation as the expedition vehicle. Cambridge attended several car shows here including the Ellerslie Car Show but it was much more on home turf at the Wanaka Wings and Wheels event in April, as reported here last month. The man who engineered the car’s visit here (also organiser of the time trial event for classic cars

in the Targa New Zealand), Rod Corbett, decided to arrange a little safari through the South Island high country for Cambridge in company

Only the Land Rover is the original and the growing affection for that classic vehicle currently knows no bounds

with some local Land Rovers. He was overwhelmed by Land Rover enthusiasts wanting to come along. He had to cap entries at 80 vehicles per safari and run three separate safaris to even begin to satisfy demand. Versions of every iteration of Land Rover took part, from a faithful reproduction of the very first roadregistered Land Rover through to the new Land Rover 110.

SMASH HIT The very reason Rover decided to invent them in the first place, to create a four-wheel drive, go-anywhere vehicle that would be a boon to post-

war farmers aiming to mechanise and increase production, made Land Rovers a smash hit with country cousin New Zealand, which was rapidly climbing the international prosperity rankings on the sheep’s back. Certainly Philip, who has spent almost all of his life on farms, says for decades they were as central to his existence as gumboots. “We’ve always had Land Rovers: Series 2s and Series 3s. I feel a bit strange if I don’t have a Land Rover in my life,” he says. So, he’s got the emotional attachment and a deep understanding of the affection and nostalgia that’s driving the current surge in interest, but he’s also making a hard-headed

investment. He’s so convinced of the inexorable rise in the value of Land Rovers that he decided on a patient, open-cheque-book approach to restoring this Land Rover. “After $30,000, I stopped counting,” he says. “I always knew it was going to cost a reasonable amount, but the cost of anything was never going to present a barrier in the end.” Restoring a Land Rover should be relatively straightforward, as the early ones in particular were deliberately pared back, simple machines and most spares are readily available — but you can’t take that for granted. Philip says he initially entrusted this vehicle to another workshop that

had it for some time but he grew dissatisfied with their work. He talked it over with Brian Renall at Top of Range Automotive in Albany which does the servicing work on his Range Rover Sport and P38. They know Land Rovers inside out, and Brian took it on as his final project before handing the daily running of the business onto his son, Tyler. Philip says his brief to Top of Range was to restore it to as-new, concours competition standard, which naturally calls for complete authenticity. They considered each element of the restoration as a project. The project took about three years, progressing when time and parts were available. “I didn’t push them on time. I took a very long-term approach. It’s an amazing inflation hedge.” Philip took great pleasure in the occasional discussions deciding whether to refurbish parts to as-new condition to maintain originality or whether it was best to replace them.

and unique qualities around the world. That crystallised the design team’s brief for the next version. It should continue to be a military vehicle, an expedition vehicle, a vehicle to be used in the African bush and the Australian outback, where the ability to fix it in the field could be vital to survival. Stylistically, the Series 2 was a much more refined and appealing but still rugged design. It introduced the distinctive small curved hip running the length of the body that became a defining feature of the ‘Series’ Land Rovers, so much so that when you notice it, the Series I vehicles look odd without it. The Series 2 also retained the distinctive recessed radiator grille. Most still had the lights in that well too, although in 1968, on Land Rovers exported to America, they

The spartan look of the Series 2 is appreciated today for its minimalist aesthetic but features like the bare metal dash were deliberate choices PETER RABBIT GREEN The canopy, for example, was a second-hand item they refurbished. The body colour was changed too. It was originally a dull grey, but Philip’s young cousins had immediately latched on to the green Land Rover in the new Peter Rabbit films and, as the colour certainly looked ‘right’ to Philip, green it would be. Most if not all Series I Land Rovers were painted one of three shades of military green, as in the immediate post-war years those ex-military paints were readily available. The door shuts with a resounding clunk as the substantial brass tongue engages in the striker plate. “I knew we were making progress when I heard that sound,” says Philip. Looking along the side of the Land Rover shows off the workmanship that has gone into this rebuild. Land Rovers were built with flat sheets of aluminium fastened to a full galvanised frame. Naturally, the frame on this Land Rover has been fully re-galvanised too. But unstressed flat

36

sheets are very prone to distortion and wobbling in or out. That’s why the reflections on black Land Rovers don’t do them any favours. It’s to Top of Range’s credit that they bowed the guards outwards ever so slightly over the wheels, which gives them a much more uniform and stable shape. It looks just right. As Maurice Wilks and his team at Rover set about updating their original 1948 design, they were keenly aware Austin was gearing to take a slice of the action, especially in military contracts, and was working on its own four-wheel drive machine. The Rover team was determined the Land Rover should maintain its lead as the best four-by-four by far.

STYLING REFINED The publicity won by the Oxford and Cambridge Trans-Africa Expedition, and their even more ambitious 1955 Far Eastern Expedition to Singapore, had established the car’s reputation

moved to join the sidelights on the front wings to comply with American law. On early ‘Federal’ versions, they were quite prominent, earning the sobriquet ‘Bugeye’, but in 1969 the wing-mounted lights were set in a recessed panel. The final big style change, moving the recessed grille forward to create a flush front, occurred right at the end of the Series III’s reign with the launch of the first V8 Land Rover in 1979. The Series 2a, introduced in 1961, is now considered the most durable and easily repairable series, and the version that Land Rover got most right. The letter suffix on the chassis number changed in line with upgrades but the series kept the 2a moniker until the Series 3, usually styled Series III, was introduced in 1971. That makes this 1971 Series 2a Land Rover one of the last of its kind. The spartan look of the Series 2 is appreciated today for its own minimalist aesthetic qualities, but features like the bare-metal dash were deliberate choices. It meant the instruments were easily accessed by undoing just four screws. Air conditioning was achieved by opening flaps under the windscreen — not much to go wrong there. And being able to do an engine overhaul while leaving the engine block in the vehicle was a significant advantage when out of town. The rear main oil seal could also be replaced without removing the engine or gearbox. The adaptability of the Land Rover platform — and let’s not forget it had power take-offs for driving other machinery — was a key element in it also being chosen for many first responder as well as agricultural and military roles. The Series 2 was made in 88-inch (223cm) SWB or Short Wheelbase and 109-inch (276cm) LWB, Long Wheelbase, versions. The first SWB models were fitted with the Series I’s two-litre four until stocks ran out in 1958. After that, they all got the new 2.25-litre four-cylinder OHV engine, which produced 52kW (70bhp) at 4250rpm, a useful gain over the twolitre’s 38.7kW (52bhp).

The artist, though, was no child. Maurice Wilks was a talented engineer developing Rover’s gas-turbine-powered car, following on from his wartime work with Frank Whittle on his revolutionary jet engine. Rover had asked Wilks to come up with a utility vehicle as a stop-gap project. The company was struggling to sell its luxury cars in a near destitute post-war Britain. Maurice had the American Jeep in mind, and in fact the prototype was built on a Jeep chassis, but with the future of the company on the line he and his engineer brother, Spencer, put their minds to coming up with something a whole lot better. Wilks sketched out his original idea for this 4×4 Rover on the sandy beach near his farm on the island of Anglesey. Launched in 1948, the ‘Land-Rover’ was an instant success. Sales of the Land Rover soon outstripped sales of Rover luxury cars by a margin of two to one. It quickly found favour with farmers in the UK and wherever the asphalt ended in the far-flung reaches of the Commonwealth. Sales reached more than a million part way through the Series III Land Rover’s reign, but by then sales volumes were in serious decline. At that stage, Land Rover was part of the beleaguered British Leyland. That company’s inability or unwillingness to invest in new power plants that would give the Landy a decent on-road cruising speed — so vital in places like Australia and South Africa — meant Land Rover began losing sales hand over fist to more powerful and roadworthy vehicles from Japan: Toyota’s Land Cruiser and Nissan’s Patrol. The advent of the Range Rover, changes of ownership to BMW and later Tata — and finally, some decent power plants — plus a healthy dose of carefully nurtured affection for the car’s literally ground-breaking history, saw the marque saved. The Defender, the last iteration of the Wilks lineage, ceased production in 2016.

CURVED SHOULDERS The axles were changed resulting in a wider track for the Series 2 at 1219mm, which is what prompted the addition of the curved shoulder, widening the body to suit. Rover stylist David Bache matched this with a curved-back cab for the utility version and curved sides to the roof and bonnet lip. Deeper body panels also hid more of the chassis, which gave the vehicle a much more civilised appearance. Barely creditable today, but the four-speed manual gearbox only had synchromesh on the third and fourth gears. It took until 1972 before all four gears featured synchro. The cab also featured the simple and distinctive red

and yellow floor-mounted knobs for engaging four-wheel drive and lowor high-range gears. Drivers had to stop the car to engage low range. It had front and rear differentials but no centre diff, so four-wheel drive could only be used on loose surfaces to avoid transmission wind-up. All four wheels had drum brakes, plus one on the transmission for the handbrake, but the long wheelbase model got larger drums front and rear. Front and rear suspension was by halfelliptic leaf springs with steering by recirculating ball and nut. In 1966–1967, LWB models got the option of the Rover six-cylinder engine of 2625cc capacity from the

Rover 100 saloon. This overhead inlet side exhaust engine produced 62kW (83bhp) at 4500rpm and torque of 173.5Nm (128lb/ft) at 1500rpm. It remained in production until the advent of the V8 in 1979. The IOE engine (inlet over exhaust) design used in both four and sixes was actually a more efficient design than it sounds. The angled head and piston produced a hemispherical combustion chamber which allows better fuel burn, and it gave a shallow gap between inlet valve and piston, which avoids knocking with lowgrade fuel — especially useful given the Land Rover’s affinity for the road less travelled.

The Series 2 and 2a featured in the film Born Free, the TV series Daktari, and there’s no doubt it inspired many other follow-up African adventures, captured on celluloid or not. This was the Landy that made Land Rover a household name. In 1972, Land Rover added the unburstable Salisbury diff and axle which solved a noted half-shaft vulnerability. While the Series 2 and Series III Land Rovers cemented the vehicle’s unique reputation globally — and the one million mark was surpassed early in the Series III’s reign — the zeal and initiative of the Wilk era was lost in later years and Land Rover, at one point, was lucky to survive.

RIGHT PLACE, RIGHT TIME Selecting this Land Rover for this rebirthing process was relatively straightforward for Philip. It was owned by his cousin, Des Paulsen, who is married to Philip’s PA. He had retired it from active service on his family’s Muriwai farm many years earlier. It had sat outside, slowly, organically, reuniting with the land it had served for years, until Philip persuaded him to part with it in partexchange for some work Philip had done on a sub-division. His promise to restore it secured the deal. Philip says it was in well and truly used condition, but it had done relatively few miles at around 130,000 for its 1971 vintage (the last year of the 2as). Even more remarkably, Philip has known all of its private owners, who lived and worked in a small geographical circle in the North Auckland area. That provenance really only adds to its charm. It was sold in 1971 to DSIR for their geological survey team. Then it went to the Post Office in Dunedin in 1980. They kept it for three years until Henderson Ford specialist Eli Friedlander’s Forward Specialities bought it at 88,000 miles. Philip went to school with his daughter. Then Brian Bracey, Philip’s grandparents’ neighbour in Huapai, bought it in 1984. And cousin Des bought it from them at 100,557 miles in 1987. “He was genuinely shocked when he saw it again,” says Philip. There are two features on this Land Rover that might raise the eyebrows of Series 2 aficionados. The first is the seats. They are the more sculpted and comfortable models from the Series III Land Rover. However, a set of seats from the Series 2 are under construction so they can be installed for shows or competition if required. The second feature is the overdrive. Philip says these handy units weren’t offered as standard but were developed later and made available as an aftermarket fitting. Relatively few were fitted to farm-based Land Rovers,

which was the case for most of the Series 2 vintage vehicles, but Philip considers it a most worthwhile addition. “It will cruise comfortably, completely unstressed, at 80kmh.” Without it, he reckons you would either be pushing it out of its comfort zone, or be down at 70kph, which would be much more of a nuisance to other motorists. The four-cylinder engine is actually much quieter and smoother running than I’d anticipated, given the blame these two-litre petrol engines had heaped on them for Land Rover ceding its crown to Land Cruiser — but this was now virtually a new engine. While they were designed and built to be refurbished in the field, they were actually pretty strong and reliable, just not

as powerful or as long-legged as farmers at this end of the earth, especially in Australia and South Africa, really wanted, which they could get in the Land Cruiser and Nissan Patrol.

LOCAL HERO The vehicle has earned its gentle retirement stored securely on its old stamping ground, but it gets out for special occasions. The restoration was finished in March, and it attended the Kumeu show where it drew a continuous stream of admirers. “Lots of people came along and said something. It’s provided a lot of joy for others,” Philip says. He plans to take it to plenty more shows to share the love.

It’s also been on a couple of outings which enabled his young cousins who inspired the paint job to live their Peter Rabbit dreams. Philip is now on the lookout to repeat the process for another Land Rover — a 109, a County or a Defender. In keeping with his upbringing and rural focus — Philip owns several agricultural businesses — he also collects tractors and hay balers. However, he’s convinced the broad and deep and timeless affection for the Land Rover means there’s no better classic car investment. He has one more word of advice: “If there’s one critical thing I’ve learned it is you can’t restore a car with impatience. If you have impatience, you can’t get it right.”

This season promises to be an absolute cracker, for a number of reasons. It’s the final year of the current specification cars that have served Supercars so well for close to 30 years. To keep the connection with the fiercely brand loyal fans, the new-for-2023 regulation vehicles take on the genuine look current Ford Mustangs and Chevrolet Camaro offer. The traditional ‘touring car’ shape will be gone, to be replaced by the sleek sports car style. The Gen3 cars have already been on track for rigorous testing, and by the time the opening round of the 2023 series is here, there's no doubt the sport will be at the top of everyone’s mind. While the industry and the fans cannot wait to see the new Gen3 cars hit the tracks in anger next year, this special time should not be wished away. The current generation touring cars will be remembered as the birthplace of this amazing formula. They are the reason why fans adore the category, and the reason why brands like Repco decide to invest heavily.

The future is exciting, but we should also enjoy and celebrate the prospects for 2022. The current Ford Mustangs and Holden Commodores are the pride of the category, and everyone no doubt respects the great legacy that this generation of machines has brought to the motorsport world. While many things have changed and developed, the silhouette of these cars has been familiar since the Supercars formula was born in 1992. This year is the last time we'll see these heroic vehicles race at the top-level, so soak it in. The Supercars season will include 13 events in 2022, starting at Sydney Motorsport Park and touching all corners of Australia, plus a muchanticipated return to Auckland, New Zealand, for the September round at Pukekohe Park Raceway. It’s hard to believe that the category has not visited New Zealand since 2019. At Repco, the New Zealand Supercars event is a huge part of its celebration plans, so customers and fans will be in for a treat. Repco is certainly planning to make up for the last three years that have been lost to V8 motorsport fans in this, its 100th year in New Zealand.
