AS THE NUMBER OF COUNTRIES BRINGING IN NEXT DECADE TARGETS FOR CONVERSION TO EVS ACCELERATES, GERMAN MOTOR INDUSTRY LEADERS ARE SOUNDING A NOTE OF CAUTION

Some leaders in Germany’s automotive industry are warning against an over-reliance on electric vehicles. BMW’s chairman of the board of management, Oliver Zipse, says Europe just isn’t ready for an imminent switch to EVs in the passenger car market. He told attendees at a carmaker’s Innovation Day his company thinks “it’s wrong to switch off the combustion engine in Europe”.

The European Union and Canada have fairly recently agreed to a ban of new petrol and diesel cars from 2035. More than 50 per cent of new vehicles registered in Norway are now electric and Holland has one of the most advanced charging networks in the world, ahead of Germany. However both countries have relatively densely populated areas. Germany’s population is more distributed and while purchase of electric cars is accelerating there, per capita EV purchases are half that of Holland.

Zipse’s comments about an over-emphasis on EVs were echoed by speakers from Toyota and Ford. They argued motorists would still need a choice in motive

power because of the unsolved constraints in different markets. Not every country is rolling out electric tech at the same speed, and the world’s energy mining resources are not at the scale needed for a switch to electric power at the pace being urged.

Zipse also warned a deadline for banning internalcombustion engines “would lead to distortions that nobody here can control any more”. He told the German business magazine Wirtschaftswoche the

industry would look radically different in the future if it went with just one technology.

At a roundtable in New York, in January, he highlighted that the supply of raw materials for batteries was controlled mostly by China.

“When you look at the technology coming out, the EV push, we must be careful because at the same time, you increase dependency on very few countries,” he said.

He told the Stuttgarter Zeitung: “We are currently seeing the consequences of the gas shortage for Germany and Europe because we prepared too few alternatives.

“In the automotive industry, we should use this occasion to ask ourselves what we can do if there should ever be too few battery cells. Everyone would certainly like to see an alternative to battery power. But this will only exist if we have prepared it in good time.”

He said fuel cells need to be considered as an alternative. The infrastructure being developed for long-haul trucks is well-suited as a “backbone for supplying passenger cars”, he said.

Bosch announced in June 2022 it was investing $US1.3 billion in hydrogen development and

BMW is well down the track of launching its battery-powered ‘Neue Klasse’ models due in 2025, but BMW has invested heavily over decades in developing fuel-cell technology. As far back as the launch of its Hydrogen 7 model in 2006, BMW was touting hydrogen as the way of the future, believing it had greater advantages over electric vehicles.

“Experts agree that hydrogen is the only source of energy with the potential in the long run to replace fossil fuels in road traffic,” the carmaker said at the time.

While BMW has now accepted electric powertrains are a viable alternative to fossil fuels for everyday motoring, Zipse retains the view that hydrogen is “the only raw material that can be sustainably produced and stored”. It also has infrastructure benefits, he said.

“You can convert a [petrol station] in two days. The way there is relatively short, unlike with electromobility, where you need connections to the medium-voltage grid and you need a charging infrastructure for every car,” he said.

“That’s a lot of work. That will work, but not as the only solution. This is going to take far too long. That’s why we firmly believe in hydrogen. It will come and it will come at BMW, I am very, very sure of that.”

BMW is also planning to launch its iX5 SUV, which uses hydrogen fuel cells to power its electric motors, in the next half of this decade.

Scissor lifts offer maximum flexibility, space, and value

The Automaster AM-7530 Mid-Rise lift is a portable, free-standing scissor lift that is ideal for wheel, tyre, brake, and suspension servicing.

It easily raises a 3000kg car or light commercial vehicle to a comfortable working height on heavyduty rubber blocks placed under the correct lifting points, which also minimise the risk of vehicle damage.

The AM-7530 has been designed for maximum flexibility. The wheeled power unit and control can be engaged to the lift, meaning the lift can be rolled to an outside concrete apron, creating a new workspace. The open middle section gives access beneath the car to areas that are not accessible from mid-rise lifts using a full superstructure. The dual-power cylinders and the solid, safety lock ladder bars make this one of the most versatile and easy to use mid-rise lifts available. The approach ramps lock into a horizontal position to extend the 1400mm platforms by 285mm on each end, giving an extra 570mm overall.

For workshops wanting a full height lift, Automaster also offers a scissor lift topping out at 1900mm from a very low platform height of 100mm, which is ideal for workshops with limited

ceiling height. The AM-7130DH can also be flush-mounted to preserve a flat floor — it can be driven over at any angle when the lift is not in use, maximising space in the workshop.

The option of selecting the distance between the lift platforms, means the lift can be configured for full frame, uni-body, or SUV lifting points. An optional van lifting bar kit is available for pick-up trucks and SUVs with narrow chassis rail lifting points.

The 220-volt (single phase) electric/hydraulic power unit is housed inside a separate metal control panel box. The AM-7130DH’s approach ramps can also be locked horizontally to extend the platform length.

And, like the AM-7530, the AM-7130DH is supplied standard with four 40mm and four 80mm UHMP rubber lifting blocks, an air regulator/ moisture trap and oiler, and oil hose covers.

for both lifts creating a very low loading angle.

Stop-Start, also known as Idle Stop-Start (ISS) is a technology commonly found in modern vehicles. The characteristic feature of Stop-Start technology is its ability to reduce a vehicle’s fuel consumption and emissions by switching the engine off while the vehicle is stopped. Diagnosing a repeat fuel system fault

Without fuel, there is no go. The fuel pump serves as one of the most important parts in the operation of any vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine. Fuel pumps have come a long way from basic mechanical-driven systems to the high-pressure electric pumps we see today. Not only have the pumps changed, the technology that controls them has evolved significantly over the years.

Modern vehicles often use two-stage pumps and while a no-fuel fault in a modern vehicle could well relate to mechanical components of the pump itself, there are a wide array of connectors, relays, control units and circuitry that are also at risk of Corrosionfailure.caused by moisture ingress into a connector assembly is a common cause of a nostart fault. Since it is harder for moisture to get out of a connector once it has got in, only dismantling, drying and removing the corrosion will restore the connection and fix the fault.

These bad connections are not confined to the fuel pump electrical power and control circuits. They can also occur at ground or earth points. Unfortunately, often these poor connections can

only be determined by inspection of the connector itself which involves removing it, cleaning and reinstalling it.

It’s important to understand that what appears to be repeat fuel pump failure may really be a failure of the electrical connections, or one of the

many related components in the system. In short, whenever a fuel pump is removed, all electrical connectors should be checked for damage or corrosion, and repaired or replaced as necessary.

WHEN PRINCESS ELIZABETH WANTED TO MAKE A PRACTICAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE WAR EFFORT, SHE BECAME A MECHANIC

World War II saw thousands of women stepping into what had previously been thought of as men’s roles, on the farms, in factories and in the armed forces. Many served in the ATS, the Auxiliary Territorial Service, an auxiliary branch of the army for women.

The Queen Mother, then Queen Elizabeth, was made the commandant-in-chief of the Women’s Royal Naval Service, Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, and Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service. In the early part of the war, like many concerned mothers she sent her children, the princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, out of London, to the countryside,

although she refused advice to send them to Canada. Showing much of the same spirit, when Princess Elizabeth turned 18, she declared her desire to serve her country.

Her father, King George VI, was against it, wanting her to carry on with her training as a princess instead, but Elizabeth wasn’t to be denied. He made her an honorary second subaltern in the ATS.

Princess Elizabeth began her training in March 1945, making her the first and only woman in the royal family to serve as a full-time active member of the armed forces. She was not given any special rank or privilege, although she was eventually promoted, on her own merits, to junior commander.

After joining the ATS, Princess Elizabeth passed a military driving test, learned how to read maps, and began working to repair engines.

Collier’s magazine in 1947 reported that “one of her major joys was to get dirt under her nails and grease stains in her hands, and display these signs of labour to her friends”.

The only sign of her privilege was her sleeping arrangements. She slept every evening in Windsor Castle rather than in camp with the other ATS members.

The new electric brake controller has been designed to provide additional braking control and enhanced safety to drivers who regularly tow heavier trailers or caravans.

It features its own, unique braking algorithm, ensuring superior performance and reliability.

In its native Australia, trailers with a Gross Trailer Mass (the weight of the trailer with everything in it) of between 750kg and 2000kg are required to be fitted with either a mechanical or electrical braking system. And, anything over 2000kg needs to have an electric, or electric over hydraulic brake and an electric ‘break-away’ controller. Break-away systems are designed to activate the trailer or caravan’s electric brakes if they decouple from the tow vehicle.

When hitched to trailers and caravans with electric brakes, the electric brake controller’s purpose is to activate and control the braking force supplied by the electric brakes in the caravan or trailer whenever the driver in the tow vehicle applies the brakes.

The controller allows braking to be easily modulated by adjusting the dial left for a lower setting or right for maximum setting. This adjustment might be needed when descending steep hills or mountain roads, providing the driver with additional controlled braking capacity.

function — if the driver notices that the trailer/ caravan is swaying, they press the same dial to engage the override. This applies the trailer brakes independently without the tow vehicle brakes needing to be on, pulling the trailer or caravan into line and minimising the swaying effect. New Zealand’s braking requirements for trailers are simpler. There is no legal requirement for brakes on trailers up to 2000kg GVM. The law simply states that the tow vehicle and trailer must be able to stop safely within seven metres from 30km/hr, which puts the onus on the tow vehicle.

However, if the tow vehicle is only rated to 750kg GVM unbraked, for example, towing an unbraked trailer above this 750kg GVM gets risky. Leveraging EVs

EVS WILL BECOME MORE PREVALENT AS TIME PASSES. LEARNING THE NECESSARY SKILLS CAN EVEN ASSIST TECHS WORKING ON INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES

In late March of this year, Canada announced a lightduty vehicle mandate that states that by 2035, 100 per cent of all light-duty vehicles sold in Canada must be zero-emission vehicles — either electric or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Canada is just the latest country joining Norway, Holland, France, Germany and even India to set ambitious electric vehicle targets.

We are witnessing the most significant and broad reaching change to the motor industry since the Model T. It will drive unprecedented challenges to everyone associated with the transportation network. As a result, workshops will all have new skills to learn.

This refocus shouldn’t be a surprise but that hasn’t avoided the industry having a shortfall on qualified EV technicians, nor the availability of talented service personnel overall.

TRAINING AND SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

Unlike other automotive disciplines, the importance of EV technician training is crucial for customer satisfaction and, more importantly, the safety standpoint. Electric and hybrid-electric vehicles

are no more challenging to diagnose and repair than internal combustion engine-powered vehicles but they are different. Technicians who think they can just “wing it” are placing themselves and the customer in a potentially dangerous position.

There are many options for affordable technician training on electric vehicle repair, but before investing dollars in it, ask yourself if you have sufficient understanding of electrical theory. Having a digital multimeter is a start but knowing how to use it is even smarter. A starting point is truly understanding circuits, voltage, resistance, and current, Ohm’s law, voltage drops, series, and parallel circuits. And do your technicians really know how to use a meter, the correct leads for each situation, or how to make sure the fuse isn’t blown?

Surprisingly, according to experienced technicians, a general lack of understanding of basic fundamental electrical skills and correct meter usage is one of the largest challenges we face. Unfortunately, many experienced mechanics have just got by with knowledge gleaned on the job

and that means they can quickly find themselves struggling because of their lack of formal training, or basic theoretical knowledge.

There are options out there for EV training, but not as many for foundational electrical skills, which are increasingly important in both EV and general motor vehicle diagnostic work. Even if you aren’t interested in moving into the EV field, truly understanding electrical diagnostics is well worth the effort for almost every vehicle that comes through your door.

Let’s assume that your workshop is up to speed on electrical diagnostics, can set up and use its meters effectively, and is confident its meters are fully functional and is considering moving into EV repair. Let’s outline what a good electric vehicle course will teach you.

SAFETY

Before that first Nissan Leaf or Kia EV crosses your doorstep, proper safety equipment, tools, and personal protective equipment must be purchased. Essential items include high-voltage gloves, insulated hand tools, suitable high-voltage meters and leads. What is almost as important as the tools is a researched and documented standard operating procedure for electric vehicles.

be different too. Although some EVs are easily recognisable by their body lines or badging, many aren’t as quickly identifiable at a glance. Prius on the shop floor? Pretty much everyone will recognise it for what it is but new Kia and MG models look superficially identical to their ICE brothers. Identifying the car in the shop can be as important a safety point as having the correct tools and training to work on it.

How about labelling an EV as soon as it enters the facility with a bright tag that says “EV” under the wiper. Having your service department make this a standard part of the vehicle acceptance process can help make sure these vehicles with new diagnostic challenges are identified quickly and accurately by everyone in your shop. Other items to be added to your ‘SOP’ should be orange traffic cones.

This may seem like going overboard but marking out the area where an EV is under active diagnosis with a few cones can help avoid the temptation for someone in the workshop to goose a colleague, no matter how deserving, while they are up to their elbows in 800-volt circuity.

TYPES OF EVS

While we are discussing the basics let’s look at the three main types: battery-electric, hybrid-electric, and plug-in Battery-electrichybrid-electric.vehicles(or BEVs) operate solely on battery power and are the simplest of all. A drivetrain generally consists of at least one electric motor, a high-voltage battery, and components that control and operate the other vehicle components. These vehicles have unique systems compared to cars with an ICE. BEVs have no accessory belt to drive systems such as power steering pumps and AC compressors. These components are electrically driven.

Hybrid-electric vehicles (referred to as HEVs) are the most common types of electrically powered vehicles. HEVs have both electric and gasoline motors but they don’t have a socket for recharging their auxiliary battery from the grid. The high-

The last category is the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (or PHEV), which is, obviously, an HEV that also allows you to plug in to charge the battery. That means drivers can drive it solely as an electric vehicle by plugging in often enough to avoid using the ICE, but they don’t have the range of a dedicated BEV.

At some stage we may see fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV). At present only a few trucks are on the road. They operate like a BEV; only they create electricity through a chemical process utilising high-pressure onboard stored hydrogen. The development of this technology is still ongoing.

As mentioned above, EVs have some unique components that training will make you familiar with. High-voltage batteries, electric motor/ generators, planetary gearsets that link ICE and EV motors, and ancillary components like electric steering racks, electric A/C compressors, electricity inverters, and converters.

DISABLING AND ISOLATING

Each EV has similar components but also a unique controlling infrastructure on how they operate. Before beginning any repair work on the HV system, the vehicle will need to be disabled so that the car cannot operate and isolate the high voltage to one location — the battery.

The way EVs are constructed makes it difficult to remove the HV battery or totally discharge the power it possesses. Standard industry practice is to remove what is called the vehicle’s high-voltage service plug. Present in all mainstream vehicles with a high-voltage battery, the high-voltage service plug is a gateway between the high-voltage battery and the rest of the vehicle’s systems. Removing it allows the technician to isolate all high voltage to the battery, rendering the vehicle inoperative.

A CHANGING EMPHASIS

Internal combustion vehicles are going to be here for a long time. Analysts predict they will be produced and sold for years to come; and with modern vehicles’ lifespan quite capable of lasting 400,000km, there will be a need for their maintenance and repair far into the future, and of course heavier vehicles and classic cars will remain in circulation for many more years. This article is not saying that traditional internal combustion engine skills are outdated. They will continue to be critical for our vehicle infrastructure. However, in taking a realistic look at the direction that the light-duty vehicle market is moving, it is plain to see that the need for electric vehicle repair support is a growth industry, and today’s automotive workshops and technicians should aim to be a part of that growth.

These vehicles are no more difficult or dangerous to support than the ICE vehicles we work on now. Many of their systems and components are the same, and technicians will find that many of the skills and tools they currently possess will apply to them but investing in electrical training and knowledge will help ensure you are best prepared for the inevitable challenges of the future.

Achieving perfect timing

The vehicle in question was a 2003 Ford Explorer with a 4.0L SOHC (single overhead cam) engine.

The customer’s concern was a thumping noise heard under any driving conditions.

Naturally you would suspect suspension or tyres, but first, we need to duplicate the customer’s concern in a test drive time, so a technician got into the vehicle to begin his diagnosis. Right away, a loud tapping sound is heard under the hood of the vehicle. It’s loud and it doesn’t sound very good.

The vehicle is brought into the bay to pinpoint this noise. Without a doubt, there is a mechanical engine tapping noise coming from the driver’s side valve train area. We suspect a crankcase ventilation

baffle in the valve cover has broken loose and is tapping on the camshaft.

Before any further testing or dismantling, we contact the customer to check this is the noise they were concerned about. Often, it can be helpful to test drive with the client to have them point out the exact noise before we begin. We didn’t get that opportunity, so we decided to talk it through with them instead.

The customer agrees with our description so we believe we are on the same page. We then explain we suspect a mechanical problem and advise them we need to go in to check it out. We need to begin by removing a valve cover to inspect, and the customer approves.

FIRST STEPS

We do not see any issues under the valve cover itself or any obvious rocker arm/camshaft issues. We crank the engine over (ignition disabled) with the valve cover removed to inspect the movement of the valve train components. Right away, we notice the front timing chain tensioner arm is banging against the chain (Figure 1) Courtesy of ALLDATA.

The tensioner itself has failed and the plastic guide is moving around. This valve train setup is not a simple design, nor is it a simple repair. There are a total of four chains, including one in the back of the engine that requires engine removal to replace.

For a vehicle to require this extensive of a repair, it would only make sense that it be in good condition before the decision to proceed is made.

This vehicle is in great condition so the customer decides to proceed with the repair.

There are special valve train alignment tools required to replace the chains on this vehicle (Figure 2). We order the timing chain tool kit and begin teardown. During the removal of the harmonic balancer, we find out there is damage to the outer ring where the belt would ride (Figure 3) A new harmonic balancer is ordered, to be installed duringAfterre-assembly.wegetthefront engine cover off, we notice more carnage. The balance shaft chain (the lowest chain in Figure 1) also has broken timing chain guides. The broken pieces are sitting at the bottom of the oil pan.

Now, this is a typical repair for these engines, and frankly, any overhead cam engine. These things just happen and it is not uncommon. We replace these chains without an issue, up until it is time to use our new timing chain tool kit.

ROADBLOCK

There’s a problem. The top left Y-shaped tool (in the tool kit) is designed to lock into the crankshaft position sensor exciter ring while having its leg aligned with the oil pan sealing surface of the block. With everything in place, the tool is 5mm away from the block Something is wrong.

We read the repair procedure in the service manual and every step is being followed correctly. However, we still are having alignment issues.

We chose a new aftermarket harmonic balancer to use during the installation of the timing chains on this vehicle. We tried the original balancer, just to see how it aligns with the timing chain alignment tools and new chain set — and everything aligned perfectly.

We end up putting both new and old harmonic balancers on the workbench and confirm the alignment of the crankshaft position sensor exciter ring is incorrect on the new balancer. The original balancer exciter ring is cast into the centre sleeve of the

way for the original balancer exciter ring to shift, as the exciter ring is part of the centre sleeve. The new aftermarket balancer’s exciter ring is pressed onto the centre sleeve of the balancer. Unfortunately, it has been installed a few degrees off from where it should be. Easy enough to fix; we order another one.

THE SECOND TIME’S THE CHARM, OR IS IT?

The second aftermarket harmonic balancer is in the same position as the first. A genuine Ford harmonic balancer is ordered. Its exciter ring alignment is exactly that of the original. Alright, let’s move on.

The rest of the timing chain replacement process goes as smoothly as possible and we complete the rebuild.

A technician grabs the ignition key, closes his eyes, says a short prayer and twist. The vehicle cranks and just like that, it runs! The cooling system is then bled, the fluid levels are checked; the remaining plastic trim pieces are installed, the tire pressure is checked, etc. The engine is running beautifully, and the vehicle is ready for its maiden voyage.

The technician gets no further than 10m out of the door. The engine is running terribly. There are noticeable misfires, and eventually, a check

engine light is illuminated. That sinking feeling setsMaybein.

we didn’t seat a spark plug wire in completely. Something quick and easy would be perfect right now.

THE SAGA CONTINUES

A scan tool is used to retrieve trouble codes, and we find a P0320 – “Ignition Engine Speed Input Circuit Malfunction” (Figure 4). We notice the misfire “feels” as if it’s not cylinder specific. The engine idles well but does not want to accelerate smoothly.

is all over the place and lacks a cylinder-specific diagnostic direction, so it’s not a loose spark plug wire,Weunfortunately.haveacrankshaft position sensor-related fault code on a vehicle we had just replaced the timing chains on, so let’s confirm the cam timing is correct. We perform a cam-crank correlation test. This process requires the use of a digital storage oscilloscope and having access to a known-good waveform. Luckily, I was able to find a knowngood waveform fairly quickly by browsing my archives (Figure 5)

Using PicoScopes rotational rulers, we can quickly measure (in degrees) the distance the camshaft position (CMP) sensor pulse is from the

crankshaft position (CKP) sensors sync pulse. We line up the 720-degree reference marks on the CKP, and then make a quick measurement of the positioning of the CMP. This is a very fast and effective method of proving valve train timing integrity. It sure beats pulling off that timing cover again.

We do the same procedure on the vehicle we have in our bay (Figure 6). There are 66 degrees of crankshaft rotation between the CKP sync, and the first pulse of the CMP, on both captures. This proves there is not an incorrectly timed valve train assembly.

Let’s look again at the information in the code description. It states this test fails when two successive, erratic profile ignition pickup (PIP) pulses have occurred. Let’s look at that capture. I am going to zoom out a bit to see if something “erratic” happens over a longer period.

At first glance, I am not seeing something that jumps out at me as being erratic, but I do notice a small “bump” in the rising edge of the CKP’s missing tooth pulse. Let’s get a closer look at that.

I created a “reference waveform” in the PicoScope software, so I could add my suspect CKP signal to my known good. This enables me to have a singlewindow direct comparison of the two signals. This can be easier to identify subtle differences between the two captures (Figure 7)

What can cause this “disturbance” we are seeing? Both the CMP and CKP on this vehicle are VR (variable reluctance) style sensors. A variable reluctance sensor consists of a permanent magnet with a pole piece surrounded by a coil of wire.

This sensor simply generates an analog voltage output signal as a ferrous metal material passes across the tip of the sensor. With that, only something ferrous (magnetic) can be in the “missing tooth” section of the exciter ring. Maybe a piece of debris fell into the exciter ring during re-assembly? Let’s take a closer look.

TARGET ACQUIRED

Fortunately, for this vehicle, the exciter ring is exposed on the exterior of the harmonic balancer and can be easily seen without any disassembly. We get a technician to hop in the vehicle and “bump it over” until the exciter ring’s missing tooth is exposed. I see the outer portion of the exciter ring that includes a “partial tooth” in the missing tooth section of this exciter ring (Figure 8)

Is that enough to cause our issue? In the back of my head, I could remember a post on social media for a similar scenario, but this was years ago. Remember, this is a direct-from-Ford, “OEM” harmonic balancer. This exciter ring is not the same design as the original exciter ring.

Let’s look at the original once again. We did some further investigation and noticed the Dayco brand harmonic balancer CKP exciter ring matches the design of the original. However, we cannot get one for multiple days.

PURSUING A HYPOTHESIS

After discussions with Ford and our internal management, we decide to see if removing just enough of the “partial tooth” (with a small Dremel tool) could cause this disturbance to go away. Sure enough, with just a bit of that tooth removed, our current CKP signal matches our known-good signal, exactly, and the vehicle runs like new.

All symptoms are completely gone. No trouble codes were set after multiple test drives. It’s time to call the customer and let them know their vehicle is ready to go.

As a technician, it’s situations like this that can keep you up at night. This vehicle is nearly two decades old. It’s tough to digest that “bumps in the road” like this still exist in the parts industry on a vehicle of this age. By now, “they” should have it figured out, right? Multiple issues in this story, both aftermarket and OEM, brought us in directions we wish didn’t exist.

Seventh Mustanggenlaunched

FORD HAS REVEALED THE ALL-NEW MUSTANG WHICH FEATURES A RE-DESIGNED DIGITAL COCKPIT, A NEW V8 ENGINE AND REFRESHED STYLING.

“Investing in another generation of Mustang is a big statement at a time when many of our competitors are exiting the business of internal combustion vehicles,” said Ford Motor Company CEO Jim Farley. “Ford, however, is turbocharging its ICE growth plan, adding connected technology, opinionated derivatives, and hybrid options to our most profitable and popular cars — all in the Ford Blue family — on top of investing $50 billion in electric vehicles through 2026.”

Ford has sold more than 10-million-plus cars with a Mustang badge in 58 years of continuous production. Since the last all-new Mustang was introduced in 2014, Mustang has been the world’s best-selling sports coupe every year since.

A new instrument panel can be customised to display different designs as can the new drive mode-dependent display clusters.

“We’re taking advantage of every pixel,” said Craig

Sandvig, Ford Mustang interaction design manager. “We can be creative in showing necessary driving information and give the driver control of selecting colours, classic Mustang gauges or even a ‘calm’ screen where only minimal details are displayed.”

This digital instrument cluster flows seamlessly into a 13.2-inch Sync 4 centre stack behind the same piece of integrated glass, angled towards the driver.

Most noticeable is the removal of Mustang’s traditional double-brow upper dashboard, making way for a flowing, glass-clad open centre stack, packed with technology.

Ford says the seventh-generation Mustang has the most technologically advanced, driver-centric cockpit of any Mustang to date.

“We knew what customers wanted and designed the most digital Mustang ever while retaining the all-important driver-focused cockpit,” said Ricardo Garcia, Ford interior design manager. “Removing some of these physical buttons, such as radio and climate control, and integrating them into a digital display was popular in research with Millennials, Gen-Z and traditional Mustang drivers alike.”

Driving responsiveness has been enhanced by reduced compliance from steering wheel to tyre, while a quicker steering ratio enhances the new car’s cornering dynamics.

The GT comes with a choice of Ford’s 10-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual transmission. A standard Performance Pack includes 19-inch alloy wheels, a limited-slip differential, 19inch Brembo brakes and an ‘Active Valve Exhaust’ that delivers adjustable engine sounds to suit the driving scenario. Optional MagneRide active suspension monitors conditions one thousand times per second and uses an electronically-controlled fluid to match

damping resistance to the road conditions.

Behind the wheel, overhead USB ports installed above the cockpit are conveniently placed for track camera devices, preventing wires from draping across the Outside,cabin.thelow, horizontal brow across the front of the signature three-section bonnet aligns with new LED headlamps, reflecting the original 1960s design and is optimised for pedestrian protection. Its shortened rear overhang also recalls the first-generation, while the widened rear haunches point to the power over the wheels in later Mustang fashion.

Moke makes a comeback

WHAT USED TO BE THE MINI MOKE, A DERIVATION OF THE ORIGINAL MINI, HAS BEEN BORN AGAIN AS THE ALL-ELECTRIC MOKE.

Moke International, a company registered in England, acquired the marque from Casti S.p.A. The Moke is an electric-powered, re-engineered version of the iconic Mini Moke that became the darling of the denizens of the French Riviera and the Caribbean. It was driven by The Beatles, Bridget Bardot, and James Bond. Moke International updated the Mini Moke by integrating up-to-date driving technologies, including electric power, building them at its 500,000 sq ft factory in Northamptonshire, England.

Moke says it is the first ‘heritage’ brand to go fully electric. While still gearing up to deliver vehicles, Moke has announced an agreement to sell up to 100 per cent of its shareholdings to EV Technology GroupMoke(EVTG).saysit will benefit from EVTG’s engineering and design expertise, priming it to expand into global markets.

In an exclusive recycling process, waste material from the maritime industry is used to produce trim parts suitable for the exterior and interior of future vehicles. The resulting components have an approximately 25 per cent lower carbon footprint than their counterparts made from conventionally manufactured plastics.

Recycled nylon waste already forms the basis for a synthetic yarn used in floor mats in the BMW iX and the new BMW X1. This material, known as Econyl, is also made from discarded fishing nets as well as residual waste from plastics production.

Now, in cooperation with Danish company Plastix, the BMW group is taking the recycling of maritime plastic waste a step further, moving on

from producing fibres to the injection moulding process for the first time. After separation, fishing nets and ropes are turned into plastic granules that can include up to 30 per cent maritime plastic waste.

The injection moulding process produces trim parts that will be used in both non-visible and visible areas of the exterior and interior of the Neue Klasse models from 2025. The BMW Group intends to increase the proportion of secondary materials used in its new vehicle thermoplastics from around 20 per cent to an average of 40 per

THE BMW GROUP PLANS TO LAUNCH ITS FIRST VEHICLES FEATURING COMPLETELY VEGAN INTERIORS IN 2023. THIS IS MADE POSSIBLE PRIMARILY THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF INNOVATIVE MATERIALS WITH LEATHER-LIKE PROPERTIES.

While leather-like materials have been available before, they didn’t meet BMW’s expectations for feel, premium appearance and wear resistance, especially in steering wheel cover materials. BMW expects the demand for vegan and leather-free interiors to increase in the US, China and Europe.

The reduction of CO2 emissions over the entire life cycle of a vehicle is another key goal and replacing raw materials of animal origin makes a significant contribution to increasing sustainability in vehicle production. The introduction of a new steering wheel material will reduce raw materials of animal origin to less than one per cent in the respective BMW and MINI vehicles, mainly waxy substances such as gelatine in protective coatings, lanolin in paints, tallow as an additive in elastomers and beeswax as a flux for paints.

The new steering wheel surface material reduces CO2 emissions along the value chain by around 85 per cent compared to leather. Around 80 per cent of those emissions were in the form of methane gas from cattle rearing; the remaining 20 per cent is used in energy and sweater intensive processing of the cowhide.

As well as replacing raw materials of animal origin with bio-based or vegan materials, using these alternatives also results in a significant reduction in CO2.

The BMW Group is also working with startup companies to develop other innovative bio-based materials. Deserttex, for example, is made from pulverised cactus fibres with a bio-based polyurethane matrix. Another new fabric, Miriam, which has the potential to mimic all the properties of traditional leather, is 100 per cent bio-based and petroleum-free.

Compared to the synthetic leathers previously used, these result in around 45 per cent lower CO2 emissions.

Dampers get smarter still

The Ferrari Active Suspension Technology (F.A.S.T.) just introduced on the Ferrari Purosangue is enabled by a new world first damper design.

Multimatic’s ‘TrueActive’ spool valve (TASV) damper is the first to integrate an electric motor directly coupled to the damper rod which enables driver inputs to supplement passive suspension spring and spool valve damping forces.

This parallel force actuation is capable of moving the vehicle body and suspension independent of road inputs.

Multimatic says TASV Dampers maximise the cornering performance, stability and ride control envelope by truly controlling the suspension proactively by taking account of driver inputs, instead of solely reacting to vehicle motions or road inputs like conventional or previous adaptive damper systems.

The Multimatic TrueActive Spool Valve (TASV) damper system is debuting on the Ferrari Purosangue, which Ferrari is branding as ‘Ferrari Active Suspension Technology (F.A.S.T.) system enabled by Multimatic TASV technology’.

All passive and adaptive dampers are reactive elements, designed to absorb energy imparted by the road surface and g-forces resulting from driver inputs. They reactively control suspension movements and tyre forces. The Multimatic TASV Damper technology has redefined the role of dampers, transforming the suspension into an active system capable of exerting enough force to move the entire vehicle body in anticipation of a road disturbance or driving manoeuvre to achieve optimal handling

ride height and rate adjustment. It can also control vehicle wheel motions with more authority and at higher frequencies than current adaptive or semiactive suspension systems.

TASV Dampers use a unique liquid cooled 48V three-phase brushless electric motor to deliver supplemental force through a bespoke twin-lead ball screw and gearbox assembly into the damper shaft. The system is designed to minimise package space, weight, and rotational inertia.

“This technology makes it possible to continuously control the vehicle body to achieve targeted vertical, roll and pitch dynamics at any speed,” said Michael Guttilla, Multimatic vice president of engineering. “For example, the system can actively lower the vehicle’s centre of gravity and control pitch and roll stiffness under acceleration, braking and cornering to maximise traction and dynamically optimise under/oversteer handling balance. It can also optimise tire contact with the road as the vehicle drives over rough surfaces, delivering exceptional ride quality and stability.”

Grid overload? EVs to the rescue

A COMMON COMPLAINT LODGED AGAINST EVS IS THAT THE ELECTRICITY NET WORK WON’T BE ABLE TO COPE. A UK STUDY SHOWS HOW THEY CAN ACTUALLY BENEFIT THE GRID, AND CUT POWER COSTS.

The increasing number of electric vehicles (EVs) is putting more pressure on electricity networks, but a trial set up in Milton Keynes in England has found that this stress can be alleviated by the use of new charging technologies. What’s more, drivers using vehicle to grid chargers may be able to reduce their charging costs — in some cases to zero.

The findings are from the Domestic Energy Balancing EV Charging project, delivered by CrowdCharge on behalf of Milton Keynes Council.

Vehicle to grid (V2G) chargers channel energy between the grid and the user’s home and vehicle, and back again — importing and exporting energy based on the demands of the energy network. This means that vehicles can be charged when prices are low and they can send power back to the grid when demand is high, while keeping enough for the needs of the driver.

Electric vehicle drivers in Milton Keynes trialled smart chargers and V2G chargers over the period of a year. The project also involved households that had solar PV panels installed.

The trial showed that the combination of different technologies has the potential for EVs to reduce the load on the electricity grid when used in conjunction with a smart charger and battery energy management platform.

The project also showed the potential for the

technology to save EV owners money on energy costs. By the end of the trial, charge cycles for some participants were at least 40 per cent cheaper than unmanaged charging.

Also, participants with V2G chargers were sometimes able to reduce their charging costs to zero by charging at cheap times and then using the car’s charge to power their homes at expensive times. In total, participants saved a combined £2242 (NZ$4317) during the trial — an average of £15 (NZ$29) per user per month.

Participants were able to regularly reduce the carbon emissions of their charging by at least 25 per cent. Those with V2G technology were sometimes able to charge with zero emissions during periods when they could use 100 per cent renewable energy, and discharge at periods of high carbon intensity.

The traditional evening peak of demand therefore disappeared for these V2G users as they were running their homes from their cars during this peak time, therefore reducing the strain on the grid.

Mike Potter, CEO of CrowdCharge, adds: “We’ve shown that different technologies can help prevent local electricity networks being overloaded, but the key is the intelligent management of such technologies. Successfully integrating these systems can mean that electric vehicle drivers can benefit from greener energy as well as energy cost savings.”

Four Seasons in one day

Barry Raymond and the team behind Mangakino Lake Hop have been stepping up the event year on year. Now, in its fourth year, the Hop is run in conjunction with the annual Rotorua swap meet. People tend to make a weekend of it, attending the Lake Hop in Mangakino on Saturday, then heading over to Rotorua for the Central North Island Swap Meet.

The Hop takes place tucked into the banks of Lake Maraetai, and makes full use of the grass

that stretches along the coast of the Mangakino Lakefront Reserve and Golf Club to show off hundreds of modified and fantastic original muscle cars, classics, imports, Euros, trucks, bikes, you name it; the Lake Hop is not short on variety.

Unfortunately, a week of consistent rain was playing on a lot of minds leading up to the event. This dampened some spirits and affected the turnout of vehicles on the day, but didn’t stop the punters turning up in their droves. We can’t

there smashing wakes! The proximity to the water gives the event a real point of difference.

Standing back to take in all of the action, Barry shares: “We get a real buzz walking over the hill once all the cars are in, looking at what we’ve created.”

Plans are to continue expanding the event — same time next year — adding entertainment, and stretching out the real estate on offer to increase the number of attendees and make Mangakino a destination that is not just for water-sports enthusiasts.

Justin Allen sets his sights on the mountain

Justin Allen joined the Toyota 86 Championship in 2018/19 and quickly established himself as a frontrunner. He heads into the upcoming season in the NAPA Auto Parts entry high on confidence.

“I love this category because it’s super, super tight and close, which is why it’s the most competitive category in New Zealand for tin-top racing,” Allen said.

“I’m happy to be here and compete in one of the top tier classes in New Zealand motorsport.”

Allen revealed a new livery for his NAPA Auto Parts Toyota 86 at the non-championship event supporting the Supercars Championship at Pukekohe Park Raceway on 9-11 September, the final blast around the circuit before its closure next April.

“We’ve gone for a deeper blue, with a bright yellow mimicking the European-style honeycomb texture, which is sure to pop and stand out both on-track as well as on television,” AllenThesaid.field at Pukekohe was one of the largest in category history featuring previous champions Callum Hedge and Peter Vodanovich, and it was Hedge who prevailed in the Toyota 86 feature race, hotly pursued by Pukekohe veteran Christina Orr-West.

On Sunday, Allen found the pace around the Pukekohe track everyone knew he had, and battled with Saturday winners Dion Pitt and Brock Gilchrist to finish fourth in the feature race. He provided this insight into the Toyota 86 category.

“The Toyota 86 Championship here in New Zealand is the closest and most competitive category to contest in the country,” he explained.

“There were 20 entries for the meeting at Pukekohe Park supporting the Repco Supercars

Championship and it was a weekend of hard, fast racing.

“It was quite a humble meeting here in Auckland as it is the last time many of us will ever race at Pukekohe Park Raceway as it is closing down in April.”

Allen is a regular user of the NAPA Know How Motorsport Academy online portal, which provides a variety of helpful hints and tips to rising stars of the sport through the guidance of four experienced mentors, led by Supercars driver Bryce“TheFullwood.NAPAKnow How Motorsport Academy is designed to bring up some grassroots drivers through an online portal where you can learn via four mentors covering everything from how to gain sponsorship through to nutrition, and even driver coaching as well,” Allen said.

The new season of the New Zealand Toyota 86 Championship begins at Hampton Downs in January and Allen has only one target. He has set his sights on nothing less than winning the championship as he harbours ambitions to race at the hallowed Mount Panorama circuit.

“I’m aiming for the number one spot after last year’s top five result in the NAPA Auto Parts Toyota 86,” he
