The event, sponsored by the Parksville and District Chamber of Commerce, saw Minister of Agriculture Don McRae, Mary McNeil, the Minister of Children and Family Development, Steve Thomson, the Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, Ida Chong, the Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development and Blair Lekstrom, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure join Parksville-Qualicum MLA Ron Cantelon IDA CHONG at the Sunrise Ridge Waterfront Resort to give a brief rundown on their ministries and field questions from chamber members.

Each of the ministers prefaced his or her remarks with high praise for Cantelon and the work he has done to represent his constituents.

Hit and run arrest Public help nab suspect in collision PARKSVILLE — Members of the Oceanside RCMP detachment only have so many eyes and ears, so they rely on the public to help them out.

He said whoever is responsible he would like them to consider whatever it is in their life that is causing them to behave this way.

“All we are asking is for them to come clean.

Perhaps they would like to sit down and talk with me and maybe I can be helpful. If they are poor and need some money I might give them some.”

Kirkby said they had to dip into their own pockets to replace the stolen equipment which wasn’t insured.

“We are not insured because the cost of insurance once you are off the main route is staggering,” he admitted.

Kirkby said they have learned from this and now all of their equipment is chipped and traceable. As well they have installed locks that cannot be picked.

“We learn as we go,” he stated.

It is not the first time the hatchery has been broken into. Thieves managed to break the lock on the gate at the road to the hatchery in the past. He said in this latest instance they walked in and carried out the equipment sometime on the night of February 5.

He said work by volunteers is in full gear and the theft of the equipment will not stop their ongoing efforts to restore the pink salmon run in the creek and currently the incubators are teaming with tiny fish that volunteers have

“Right now they are half way between alevins and fry. They are a couple of months away from hatching into full fry.”

Kirkby said eventually they will be released into the creek and they will head to the ocean.

“We release almost all of them into the river but keep back about 350 thousand which we transport by tanker truck down to Deep Bay.” He said the Deep Bay Yacht Club has kindly donated them a space where they put in a net pen to raise the fry until they are ready to be set free.

“We put them in there and feed them every two hours by hand. They are so tiny they can’t eat normal food. We grind the feed into dust and our volunteers, up to 40 of them in rotation, go down and feed the fish. Everyone looks forward to it.”

He said that feeding process lasts between a month and five weeks until the fish reach a particular size. He said the juvenile salmon are only released once the ocean conditions are ideal for their survival.

“Once they double their size they are much stronger. We will release them out of the nets when there are huge blooms of food in the ocean for them.”

Twenty years ago Nile Creek was a dead river but the ongoing restoration work by the dedicated volunteers of the NCES has brought it back to a full living organism providing a valuable habitat for spawning salmon.

Kirkby said despite the recent criminal activity at their hatchery the future is looking bright for the Nile Creek.

RCMP Corporal Jesse Foreman stressed that information from the public was instrumental in the arrest of the 58-year-old Parksville man on Feb. 7.

“The public played a key role in providing information that when compiled, ultimately led to the arrest,” he said.

A charge of failure to stop at scene of accident under the Criminal Code has been recommended to Crown.

The man was released to appear in Nanaimo Provincial Court in April.

irector Jamie Black says this year’s vaudeville and burlesque show, A Night at the Palace, is an organic creation, fuelled by the enthusiasm of plenty of Errington folks.

Black, in her first year as director of the show — which is in its eighth incarnation — said she has taken a different approach as director and is letting the performers and crew take on more ownership of the production. Reclining in her director’s ‘perch’ during an interview at a technical rehearsal Sunday, Black said she has found the people around her are stepping up to the responsibility of putting together another great show.

“There’s a lot of communication and forgiveness between all of the people,” she said. “It’s a confidence-builder.”

A mix of semi-professional and amateur performers, A Night at the Palace

has been in the works for about a year — almost as soon as the curtain on last year’s show fell. Black said all participants are from Errington, and that — coupled with people’s enthusiasm and energy — helps to foster a sense of community in the War Memorial Hall.

There are dancers of all sorts — from fan dancing to exotic candle acts and belly dancing — to comedy, music, short acts and longer ones, as well as a little tease of burlesque.

Black pointed out the strip tease is only a small part of the show. A Night at the Palace, she said, has always been about participation — by both performers and the audience — and the style of entertainment in the 1920 and ‘30s.

“There has always been something about the Friday night performance, recalled Black, who has been involved on stage and off for the last four years.

“People that night always hoot and holler, but on other nights, the audience is quieter.”

The friendly noise and encouragement helps the performers — some of whom are on stage for the first time.

There’s nothing more disconcerting, Black said, than silence from the seats.

In other words, play along — and dress up in period costume. It’s encouraged.

A Night at the Palace is, Black continued, a culmination of a year-long process that starts with many, many people submitting acts they would like to perform. There are too many to actually put on stage in one show, but Black said over the weeks and months leading up to it, some people back out, others can’t make the nights of the show, and eventually, a complete set of performers takes shape. Behind the scenes, Black said a committee of seven people look over the acts and determine their suitability for a family-friendly audience and then get to work on planning sets, lights, sound and much more.

The work is immense, Black said, noting the help of vital people like Thea Stavroff (stage manager), the Vaudeville Band and Nayana Mongeau (Black’s right-hand woman) and the entire Mongeau family (not to mention many

others — they know who they are) have made this year’s production go quite smoothly.

Expect schmoozing before the show, period costumes and decorations, and a lot of fun during A Night at the Palace, which hits the stage this Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Just don’t expect to find any tickets — the shows have all sold out.

“He knows how to get money out of government,” McRae said. “I aspire to get money out of government like Ron has in the past.”

The most effusive praise however came for the actions of the provincial government itself — and the need to make sure they are returned to power in the next election.

“In less than a year from now, in May of next year, we will go to the polls and we will be electing a government,” Chong said. “I hope we will return our government to make sure your community is well represented and heard at the government table — and to make sure we continue to provide the best fiscal management.”

Chong also went on the attack against the NDP, telling the standing-room-only crowd that NDP leader Adrian Dix’s promises have topped the $7 billion mark to date.

“It’s important that we maintain our AAA credit rating,” Chong said. “We are asking for your support.”

When asked about the BC Conservatives, Chong stressed the BC Liberals are a coalition, one that needs everybody to stay on board if the NDP is to be kept from power.

“We know that whenever the coalition does not stay together the NDP gets elected,” she said. “What is at risk is going back to a government that will spend tax and not be accountable for those dollars in the way you want us to be accountable. I believe we have provided good government and I trust people will see how important it is to vote in the right direction, which is a Liberal government.

Members of the Parksville and District Chamber of Commerce didn’t let a clutch of provincial cabinet ministers leave town Monday without answering a few tough questions.

Agriculture minister Don McRae was asked about the cancelation of the Buy B.C. program, which promoted local produce during the 1990s. McRae said Buy BC was a good program for the 1990s but stressed the province can do better.

“The issue isn’t dead,” he said. “The opposition is very married to it, but I think we can do better as we go forward.”

Chong was asked about the municipal auditor general initiative and how she sees this meshing with municipalities who have hired their own municipal auditor. She stressed that while an auditor hired by a municipality may well be able to find efficiencies and savings, the provincial auditor will be entirely independent — of both the municipalities and the province.

Uncertainty sparked by the repeal of the HST was also raised, with Parkwest Construction’s Duane Round, arguing the transition back to the PST has hurt construction jobs across the province. Chong replied that moving back to a two-tax system is complicated and must be done correctly.

“It’s not going to be easy,” she said.

Cantelon, looking fit and vibrant as he continues his recovery from a recent heart attack, joined in.

“I say, you look at these people,” he said. “I am amazed at how strong a team we have,

how committed they are to delivering fiscally responsive government,” he said. “I am so proud of the competence we have here to move this province forward. We need your help in getting them elected.”

Parksville council agreed to sponsor a Parksville and District Chamber of Commerce citizen of the year award, but not without controversy over the $350 cost.

Councillor Al Greir said he supported the concept but didn’t want to support it financially, “we have to recognize what’s happening around the world,” he said.

“We have a huge infrastructure deficit, that’s our main mandate,” he said, explaining that in his many years with community groups he was always able to find the money without having to go to the city.

In October 2009 Greir did come to council for $5,000 toward the Cyclone Taylor Cup. Council held off on the contribution, waiting to see if the organizers could find the funds elsewhere, which they did.

“It seems like everyone’s looking for money, we’re giving away more and more,” Greir said.

“I can’t let that one go,” said coun. Sue Powell. “Look at what we’re paying for.”

She said the award would go to a hard working community member who volunteers their time free for the city.

“It’s the right thing to do.”

With two councillors absent, the vote was four to one, with only Greir voting against.

Neighbours rally for burned senior People working to help Steve Michaud, 84, who was badly hurt in a trailer fire NEIL HORNER

Neighbours and community members in Coombs are rallying around a senior who was badly burned in a trailer fire last week.

Shane Camp lives close by the Pires Mobile Park and was one of the first on the scene. While he doesn’t know the elderly victim, he’s taken it upon himself to do what he can to help.

“I saw the white smoke and then the black smoke so I put the pedal to the metal and rushed over to the trailer park to make sure everybody got out OK,” he said. “He has no insurance, so I took it upon myself to try to help.”

Camp said he has been keeping tabs on the condition of the victim, Steve Michaud, 84, and it doesn’t look good.

“He had a heart attack yesterday,” he said in an interview Thursday. “He woke up and went into shock.

Nobody deserves that, so as a community we need to get together to help the guy out.”

Margie Hall lives in the trailer next door to the burned out shell of Michaud’s former home. She said she didn’t know him well, because he tended to keep to himself. However, she had been concerned prior to the fire.

“I went in one time to use the phone and the place was disgusting because of all the birds,” she said. “He

had free-flying canaries, the yellow ones with red cheeks, flying free all over the trailer.

He had trees in his windows all tied in there so the birds could perch and he had two back bedrooms with baseball caps nailed to the walls so they could nest.”

To feed the birds, she said, Michaud would collect grass and rosehips from nearby fields.

“He would just throw them down on the living room floor and he was doing that for years, so when the trailer went, it had all this dry grass in there.”

Hall said Michaud’s injuries appeared extremely serious.

“When I found him he

was black. He had no hair and his clothes were all melted into him. The skin on the back of his hands had been rubbed off,” she said. “He was lying on the other side of his car and the only reason I saw him was because he was clutching a flashlight and I was looking at the flashlight, wondering what it was, when he opened his eyes and I realized. He was so black when he opened his eyes all I could see was the white. It was awful.”

Trailer park owner Gabriel Pires said he had been told Michaud had respiratory problems along with his extensive burns and his recovery appeared touch and go.

“I heard he only had a 5050 chance,” he said.

Camp has set up an account at the CIBC to hopefully raise funds for Michaud and he also plans to hold a beer and burger night at a local pub, along with a silent auction.

“Anyone who donates to the silent auction gets a free half hour with me on their computer,” Camp, who works as a computer technician, said. “It’s my way of helping people help me help him.”

• Part of these preparations came courtesy of Norm Biddlecombe, president of the Seaside Cruizers car club, who this week asked council to give

their blessing to a request to close off streets downtown for the annual June 17 Father’s Day Show and Shine.

Biddlecombe also asked for barricades, garbage cans, bags and collection, as well as some town staff for traffic control and the setup and tear-down of the event.

• Al Gagnon, site manager for St. Mark’s Fair, requested permission to

close Veterans’ Way at Memorial Avenue for the July 28 St. Mark’s Qualicum Beach Community Fair.

• Kris Chand of the Qualicum Beach Farmer’s Market asked council for permission to close off Veterans’ Way on Saturday, April 28 and Fir Street on Saturday, July 28 on the same day in order to hold the weekly farmer’s market while their regular venue is in use.

Sunray Stairs Beach Access – March 6

Official Community Plan Review The City’s OCP review was re-launched on February 6 with a presentation to Council by consultants, Urban Systems, which included the work plan and many opportunities for public consultation over the next year. The presentation is now on the City’s website. [parksville.ca/ocp].

What is an OCP? A future oriented document that describes how a community wishes to evolve over the long term. It contains maps showing land uses along with goals and supporting policies which reflect the desires of the community, informed through public involvement.

An OCP is not zoning. While an OCP contains land use “designations”, it does not re-zone land. However, any changes in zoning must be consistent with the policies and designations of the OCP.

•

An OCP is not necessarily a sustainability plan. A number of communities have undertaken overall sustainability plans. While Parksville’s OCP will include sustainability elements and policies, it will not go into the same amount of depth and breadth as, for example, an integrated community sustainability plan.

March 4 – Re-Connect and Join the Discussion The first in a series of public events will be an information table at Oceanside Place on March 4 from noon to 4 pm.

There will be an opportunity for the public to review the process to date and provide feedback on where residents wish to see growth and development, transportation options and action on climate change. Please drop by for a chat.

Water Main Flushing

Procedure Bylaw Revision

The City’s annual water main flushing program runs until March 30, between 7 am and 3.30 pm, weekdays. Residents should expect some discolouration of water and intermittent drops in water pressure. During flushing, residents are encouraged to keep a fresh supply of drinking water, check for discolouration of water before doing laundry and if water is discoloured, run an outside tap (after 3.30 pm) until the water runs clear.

In accordance with S. 124(3) of the Community Charter Act of BC, the Council of the City of Parksville gives notice of the intent to revise the City of Parksville Procedure Bylaw to provide more flexibility and streamline Council meeting processes. A copy of the draft bylaw is available on the City’s website or from the Administration Department, Parksville Civic and Technology Centre.

We are now accepting applications for the spring Grant-inAid program. Organizations wishing to apply for funding should obtain a copy of the policy to ensure the submission meets all necessary criteria and must submit their application on the approved form. Eligible applicants are community non-profit organizations in the arts, culture, recreation or social services fields. The Grant-in-Aid Select Committee will make recommendations to Council; Council is not obligated to allocate any or all of the $2,500 budgeted funds. Deadline is 4 pm, March 4 to the Administration Department.

Community Park - Former Hovercraft Base Interested individuals are invited to submit a tender to lease the concrete pad at the north end of the Community Park for water sport related activities or activities which complement the nature of the park. The City’s Community Park Commercial Use Policy is available on the website.

Written tenders with supporting documentation should be submitted to the Administration Department by 4 pm, February 24.

Persons who wish to provide comment on the proposed changes may submit proposals in writing, addressed to Mayor and Council, City of Parksville (P O Box 1390, Parksville V9P 2H3).Submissions may also be hand delivered to the Administration Department. Submissions will be accepted until 4 pm on March 12, 2012.

Around The City McMillan Street – Almost There!

The McMillan Street project continues to be well ahead of schedule. Curbs and gutters are now in place; the east sidewalk is next, followed by the west sidewalk. Road construction will then be the next big task. Due to the nature of the pending road reconstruction and paving work, temporary rotating road closures at intersecting streets will be unavoidable. Notices will be delivered in advance when possible and advance detour signs and additional traffic control will be added to alleviate inconveniences to the travelling public. Please continue to be patient, we’re almost there!

Online Survey Results We recently conducted an online resident satisfaction survey with 93 responses. Unfortunately, there were not enough completions to allow meaningful comparisons to the 2010 results. Results with comments are on the website. The comments were provided to City departments and to Council for consideration. We requested only Parksville residents complete the survey and allowed the opportunity for more than one submission per email address to participate in order to accommodate more than one person per household.

82% rated the overall value of services received from the City as excellent, very good or good and 91.5% rated the overall quality of life as excellent, very good or good.

2011 Census On February 8, StatsCan released the 2011 population of City of Parksville; we are now at 11,977. Between 2006 and 2011, the City grew by 1,044 or 9%. The City’s population was 10,933 in 2006 and 10,323 in 2001.

Only just begun

C

onstruction is underway on the controversial health centre in Parksville and while the work means the facility is pretty much a foregone conclusion, so too will be the ongoing demands of many in the mid-Island for just a little more.

There’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, people should be asking for more, based on local needs assessments done as far back as 2001, which pointed out the residents of District 69 wanted health services akin to a small hospital, or something like it.

What the Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) has pushed through, is not unlike the existing after-hours doctor’s office in Parksville. It’s a good service, but limited. And in the end, it still funnels people to either the emergency room or other facilities at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

Parksville’s new clinic — which will serve all of District 69 — is threatening to be more of the status quo, albeit with potentially more doctors and other practitioners. That’s great news for people who do not have a family physician — a common lament here. A common facility — including many health services already in operation in the area — can also help make trips to the doctor shorter and more convenient.

And yes, some patients will be diverted away from hospitals and treated here.

It’s a good place to start.

But don’t kid yourself into thinking that once the health centre is built, that’s the end of it. There are plenty of people here to want additional services — long-term care beds, overnight stays — and have stated it’s nothing more than local residents deserve.

They’ve been waiting for decades for a new health facility on their terms and they’re not going to let VIHA simply walk away once the Parksville centre is complete.

This is only the beginning, and either through continued lobbying or via a grassroots effort, District 69 will, someday, enjoy the health services of other communities of the same size.

Letters DOPAMINE DILEMMA In response to the quote that “alcohol works wonders” for raising dopamine levels (THE NEWS, Feb. 10) in the article entitled, “You’re in love: what’s your body doing,” I would like to clarify that this statement was not spoken in a humorous tone.

Although alcohol does double the levels of dopamine, it is often excessively and dependently used like other addictive or coping behaviours, such as nicotine, shopping, work, eating, falling in love, or risk-taking activities, to temporarily raise dopamine levels.

Our task however, as mature adults, is to raise dopamine levels by using our own internal self-soothing sources accomplished through meaningful and soul-fulfilling activities.

WHY THE SECRECY? Last week, THE NEWS reported on the appearance of the opposition agriculture critic, Lana Popham, at a policy forum organized

by NDP candidate Barry Avis in a Qualicum Beach community hall.

More importantly, the public was invited and Popham and Avis listened to comments and answered questions from farmers, consumers and taxpayers of all political stripes.

This week, THE NEWS reported on the anticipated visit to a Parksville resort by former and current ministers of agriculture, Cantelon and McRae, along with four other cabinet ministers.

We don’t know who they will be listening to because their meet and greet was by invitation only.

This follows a cancelled public forum and a secret sod-turning for the new $15 million Parksville doctor’s clinic. It would certainly be nice if the Liberals would come out of hiding and answer questions in public.

NOT HELPING MUCH James Lunney goes on about all the wonderful things that the Harper government has done for seniors, and then attempts to defend his record in the Nanaimo-Alberni riding. What he claims to have done for his riding contains a meagre list of four things.

Not very impressive for his nearly 11 years representing this riding. He claims he is pleased to address apprehensions about the OAS program.

What Mr. Lunney failed to address was the single most important issue concerning pension, and pension reform, MP’s pensions.

A recent report by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation and the C.D. Howe Institute has estimated it would cost $277 million to pension off the present House of Commons in 2015!

Too bad the politicians have not figured out the fact that this is not sustainable.

What they need to do is create an optional dollar-for-dollar matching defined-contribution pension plan much like the new pooled pension plan they want all of us, but not them, to adopt.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a new venue in District 69 where musicians can hang out and connect with other music lovers.

Founded by Shelley Beeston and Sharon Tomczyk The Soundgarden was inspired by conversations with numerous local musicians who expressed a need for a common place to learn about, listen, or share music.

Tomczyk said the building, located on the Coombs Fairground property, has been transformed into a space for growing and nurturing musicians.

The Soundgarden was originally a church annex building, and was recently renovated to provide musicians an intimate place to play. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We wanted to create a place that was affordable, comfortable and accessible,â&#x20AC;? said Tomczyk, who added, â&#x20AC;&#x153;many musicians in the community have a lot to offer but canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afford a big space.â&#x20AC;?

Beeston said their goal is to bring musicians together and inspire those who want to get involved in the music scene. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is a space for amateurs and people learning music who can then bring it to the stage. We will offer a safe place for people to come and explore their ideas and learn from each other. It is also a place for pros who want to jam in a small venue,â&#x20AC;? she stated.

She said they also have access to the other buildings on the fairgrounds including the Arrowsmith Hall which can be used for big shows. Both agreed it would be great to have an outdoor music festival on the grounds. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are at baby stages feeling out what the community wants and needs. The space is available for private parties.â&#x20AC;?

Beeston will be conducting singing workshops in the space and sharing her love of music.

She said she loves to sing and has spent her life honing her skills as a singer/songwriter and performer.

If you love to dance but have two left feet thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a new opportunity in Oceanside to learn how to ballroom dance. The McMillan Arts Centre (MAC) is offering a new program starting Wed., Feb. 15 that is reminiscent of a by-gone era â&#x20AC;Ś dancing to live music.

With Dave Klinger on piano and dance king Bill Cave on trumpet, there will be an afternoon of dancing and refreshments for four consecutive weeks at the MAC. Al Stacey will provide tips on how to look good on the dance ďŹ&#x201A;oor so beginners are welcome. for it. Klinger said he used to play a lot of dinner dances back in the day at the Palliser Hotel in Calgary. He said Stacey, who recently moved to the area, was a dance coach in Alberta and had talked to him about the tea dances he used to facilitate and the two of them decided it was something that would go over well in this community.

ike something from mythology he was born 38 years ago in a single car garage, formed of the primordial elements — wood, metal... and fiberglass.

He started large, in fact some said he was born full grown, at 25-feet 10-inches (7.87 metres) he was always the biggest and now he’s been recognized as the world’s tallest gnome by the official arbiter, the Guinness Book of World Records.

The Nanoose ESSO gnome looks almost as good as the day he was born, thanks in part to a minor restoration a couple years ago, and possibly helped by his leisurely schedule of standing beside Highway 19 and, well, standing beside Highway 19.

While not necessarily the most active gnome in the world, he has been serving his purpose for decades, drawing people in and providing a unique backdrop for generations of tourist snap-shots.

When ESSO manager Gerald Ilott looked into a formal record he was surprised to find many of the pretenders to the throne, in places like New York, Iowa and Poland, measured barely half his size.

And so he began the long bureaucratic process with professional surveys and sending endless paperwork back and forth.

While others may claim certain qualified records — largest concrete gnome — only the Nanoose gnome will hold the official title.

While Guinness could not be reached for comment, and the record hasn’t made it online yet, Ilott received a confirmation e-mail and is just waiting for a certificate.

Unfortunately many of those who helped bring the friendly giant into the world have since passed on, namely Ron and son Bruce Hale who owned the then fun-park on the ESSO property.

They had to fight to keep their big buddy around, some in the regional district at the time didn’t appreciate his surprise appearance beside the highway.

They eventually agreed to a compromise, allowing him to move to his current location further back on the property, where he stands to this day on wheels because they didn’t want him to get too comfortable and wouldn’t allow a permanent structure.

Despite his lack of roots in the area, he’s now been standing watch over the entrance to Oceanside for long enough that he’s been grandfathered into the property, secured a spot to stand even if the property was sold, though he still doesn’t have any other formal protected status.

She said they are for people who have original music and songs that they would like to perform and get feedback.

“The song-writing circles give you the opportunity to share your works with other supportive musicians, and

learn some song-writing tips and hints from people in the business.”

There will be weekly acoustic jam nights on Thursday evenings from 7 to 11 p.m.

The musicians admit it will take facilitating and time to work out all the plans for the space and they are open to ideas.

From the moment the curtain opens the action flows, the blocking works, the visual sight gags are hysterical, and Punter coaxes strong performances out of her cast.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just humans who want a bit of love and appreciation on Valentineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day, so Bosleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pet Food Plus in Parksville is hosting an event for dogs and cats today.

The store is offering free nail cutting and grooming tips from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. The owners have invited Jesse from Paws of Parksville and Sarah from Oceanside Grooming to provide some dog and cat pedicures as well as offer tips on making your best friends beautiful.

To that end they are also handing out some free pet bling.

Brianne Carson, along with her sister Keri and mom Sue, own the store which has been in business for almost nine months. The store, at #104 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 280 Island Highway East in Parksville, even has its own mascot. Yoshi, a Great Dane (Brianneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fur baby). She said her big boy is a sweetheart and because he hangs out at a pet store he will no doubt be spoiled with some canine Valentineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s treats.

Brianne said Bosleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s will be participating in an upcoming community event for dog owners in District 69.

Dog Dayz of Winter is being organized by Scarlett Luke of Pack Leader Fitness. She has invited vendors and pet service providers to offer a wide range of pet related demonstrations and services all under one roof at the Arrowsmith Hall on the Coombs fairgrounds the weekend of Feb. 25 and 26.

It should be a lot of fun,â&#x20AC;? she said.

On the Saturday she said there will be an RCMP police dog doing a demonstration from noon to 1 p.m.

She said the idea behind the inaugural event is to get people in the community to see what kinds of things are out there for them and their pets and hopefully the event will grow every year.

She said of course dogs are welcome but they must have good manners.

Those seeking expert money advice had the cream of the crop to consult with at the event.

The wealth expo brought together under one roof, many of District 69’s leading financial advisors. Some of the area’s top minds in the industry were on hand and spoke on a wide range of topics.

For the businesses involved in the Lighthouse Country Business Association’s first half-day trade show Sunday, it was a chance to make some connections in their community.

That’s all organizers of the event could have hoped for.

Betsy Poel, business association president, says that was the goal — to introduce area residents to the people who run businesses in Lighthouse Country — Qualicum Bay to Deep Bay. With around 140 businesses, large and small, Poel said she often hears from people how they have to go elsewhere for some services.

However, she notes, plenty of those services are available closer to home.

“The idea is to encourage people to shop locally,” she said in the midst of a busy Lighthouse Community Hall on Sunday.

“People need to know that

The trade show was planned to run alongside the regular monthly pancake breakfast and flea market.

Organizer Arlene Veenhof, who runs her own small business as well, said they had initially hoped there would be 10 local business taking part.

Instead, they got 32.

“A lot of them are homebased businesses,” said Veenhof. “And all they need is to get the message out that they are

here, and how people can fund them.”

For example, Veenhof said there are three hairdressers in the area — but many people might not know that, and travel out-of-area for that service.

That’s one of the misconceptions the trade show was hoping to change.

A full house almost from the start to the end of the event, the business association is happy with the turnout and plan on holding similar events next year.

any years ago I began to date a young woman who had a breathing problem.

As we fell in love we both remarked at how her breathing cleared. But then as the months passed her breathing returned to the way it had been before.

It turns out that physical complaints often disappear in the few weeks after someone falls in love. It may be temporary, but not alBy Dr. Neill Neill ways.

This column is about harnessing the healing power of the heart. Being in love involves the heart much more than at the metaphorical level.

Authors of self-help books often advise, “Follow your heart.” Very few of them actually explain how to do it or why it’s important, but clearly two people who have just fallen in love are following their hearts.

We have learned a lot in the last 30 years about the role the heart plays in emotional, spiritual and physical health. The heart does much more than pump blood.

With negative emotion and stress the heart still does the job of pumping blood, but instruments show patterns of incoherence in electrical output. Positive emotions such as appreciation, love and caring help your heart beat calmly in a more coherent pattern.

When heart rhythm is coherent, other bodily systems, including the brain, tend to fall into coherence.

So how do you follow your heart? To start with, when you are feeling stressed and overloaded, take a moment to get out of your head and drop into your heart by deliberately feeling one of the heart emotions of appreciation, love or caring. It helps if you can “breathe into your heart” as you feel the appreciation. Then hold that feeling for 15 or 20 seconds.

The first few times you try to feel appreciation or love you may need to go to a memory of a past situation where you felt intense appreciation. With a little practice you will be able to feel it at will. This little exercise of getting into your heart via a heart emotion has the effect on the heart of making its rhythm more coherent.

Then when your brain falls into coherence with your heart, you experience greater clarity of thought and increased sense of well being. You have more energy and are more at peace.

However, the benefits don’t stop there. Besides the fact that your brain is functioning more efficiently, your immune system functions better and you have better hormonal balance. Your digestive system works better and you have fewer aches and pains. In general your health is better.

So the old exhortation to follow your heart had meaning far more profound than most ever realized. To truly be in sync with your heart is to be in sync at all levels of your being, body, you mind and spirit. Acting from the heart is about being whole and being open to communication at all levels, not just at the head level.

And the key to harmony with the heart is appreciation.

The event, entitled Then and Now, said museum manager Netanja Waddell, is part of the 2012 celebrations planned for

the community, marking the 70th anniversary of the town’s incorporation.

“It’s going to be held on International Women’s Day,” Waddell said. “We thought it would be fitting.”

The event, she said, will feature fashions from the 1800s as well as top of the line modern fashions provided by six Qualicum Beach merchants.

All funds raised go towards the Qualicum Beach hermit wooden statue project. Tickets can be picked up at Fresh N’ Fabulous at 210 2nd Avenue.

Dorothy Irene Stoodley August 12, 1916 – Feb. 6, 2012

It is with great sadness that we say good-bye to Dorothy Irene Stoodley, who passed away at the age of 95, at Eagle Park Nursing Home in Qualicum Beach, BC. She passed away peacefully with her family around her.

She will be deeply missed by her children; Gertrude (Daniel) Lewis, Marlene (Vernon) Simpson, Richard (Linda) Stoodley, Ernest (Sarah) Stoodley, Bob Stoodley and Georgina (Gilbert) Stoodley, plus numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-greatgrandchildren. Dorothy was predeceased by her loving husband of 50 years, John Morris Stoodley in 1987 and was the last in a family of 8 siblings to pass.

A Memorial Service was held on Friday, February 10, 2012 at Yates Chapel, Parksville, BC. YATES FUNERAL SERVICE & CREMATORIUM (250-248-5859) in care of arrangements.

Dorothy Grace Morrow (nee Jackson)

Dorothy died on February 3, 2012 surrounded by her loved ones at Nanaimo General Hospital. She leaves to mourn her devoted husband of 51 years, George Francis (Frank) Morrow of Qualicum Beach. Cherished mother of Courtland, Johanna (Stan Cunningham) and Gordon Morrow. Beloved grandmother of Sarah and Connor Cunningham and Emyrs Saumier-Morrow.

Dorothy was born in Yorkshire England in 1928 and “saw the light” in 1958 immigrating to Canada where she met her future husband in Toronto. Dorothy lived in Toronto, Montreal and Seattle, finally settling in Qualicum Beach fulfilling a dream to live near the ocean. She will be missed by family, friends and all those who got to know her in her final years at The Gardens. Dorothy had shown everyone what it really means to keep bouncing back even when the world got you down with her courage and spunk during her last few years.

There will be no service as per request.

Memorial donations in Dorothy’s name can be made to the S.P.C.A. YATES FUNERAL SERVICE & CREMATORIUM (250-248-5859) in care of arrangements.

KENNETH MARTIN KNUTSON (KEN)

Ken passed away peacefully with his family by his side in Everett Washington on February 2, 2012.

Ken was born in Edam, Saskatchewan on October 12, 1943 to William & Bertha (Letourneau) Knutson. He was the eldest of 4 children growing up in New Westminster, British Columbia. This is where he met and married his wife Anne. They moved to Port Alberni, BC in 1965 where they raised their 3 sons.

Ken was hard working, energetic and had a passion for business. He became a partner in Mars Contracting.

After 16 years of logging Ken & Anne purchased Costa Lotta Campground & Mobile Home Park in Qualicum Beach, and eventually started Qualicum Rivers Fishing Resort at Winter Harbour.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Anne. Sons Bill (Gina), Rob (Kandace) and Steve (Kari) along with his 8 Grandchildren whom he adored: Willy, Whitney, Wyatt, Mikaela, Adason, Kaylie, Connor & Justin.

He will also be remembered and missed by his 2 sisters, brother, nieces, nephews and many friends.

A Celebration Of Life will be held in Parksville, BC at the Parksville Community Centre located at 132 E. Jensen Ave. Saturday February 25, 2012 at 1:00pm.

Joyce Clara [Jones] Jackson née Montgomery July 1, 1928 to February 5, 2012 Joyce was born and raised in Montreal. She was married to Evan Jones for 27 years until his death in 1977. Upon her remarriage to Ken Jackson in 1983, she lived in Belleville before moving to BC in 1989 living first in Harrison Hot Springs then Nanoose Bay. Joyce leaves to celebrate her life and remember her gentle spirit, kindness, quiet strength, sense of humour, love of family and friends, sound wisdom, beautiful blue eyes and wonderful smile are her loving daughters Stephanie Jones [Parksville], Heather Rennick [Ottawa]; stepchildren Janet (Gary) Reschke [Union Bay], Judy (Paul) Carson [Edmonton], Jeff (Dana) Jackson [Enderby]; sister Grace Stevenson [Oshawa] and niece Marilyn Montgomery [Calgary].

Joyce’s love of life will be forever present in this world because of the special love she shared with grandchildren Courteney, Marie, Andrew, Joanna, Rayna, Deanna and Danny. Joyce has happily accepted the role of Guardian Angel to great-grandchildren Jullian, Kage, Quinn, Calla and Avery.

She was predeceased by her brother Allen Montgomery, son-in-law Carson Rennick, niece and nephew Fern and Kevin Stevenson.

Thanks to the staff at Stanford Place for helping her enjoy quality of life for the time she lived there and extra special thanks to the staff of the Fairview Unit for the kindness, comfort and superior care provided throughout her final days.

Survived by her sister, Grace and brothers, Douglas (Shirley) and Ross (Helena) all of Ontario. Joanne’s life was about helping people. Joanne enjoyed her family and friends and her garden. She was truly a dedicated woman of God. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

MEERS, Albert Robert Albert Robert Meers of Winnipeg, Manitoba and lately of Nanoose Bay, B.C. passed away on the morning of February 5, 2012 at the age of 94. He was the loving husband of the late Agnes Meers (nee McCammon), and father of the late Kerry Lynn Meers.

He lived, worked and raised his family in Edmonton, Alberta before moving to the coast with his wife to pursue his love of gardening. He leaves behind his two granddaughters, Meredith Lewis (Calgary) and Morgan Khan (Vancouver), his great granddaughter Castanea Khan (Vancouver), as well as nieces and nephews. Born Pearl Trilby Sundin on Jericho Beach in Vancouver’s early days, Trilby’s long life was blessed with excellent health, many good times with family & friends and two exceptional husbands. Loved ones previously gone include both her “darling” men Clyde Nicol and Bill Burroughs, and beloved son Bob Nicol (Carol). Among those celebrating Trilby’s vibrant spirit are her son & daughter-in law: David & Diane Nicol, stepson Bill Burroughs Jr. (Betty), grandchildren Sue & Jane, Cameron & Cara and their families, and all her great grandchildren.

Team Cotter punched their return ticket to the Brier down at Parksville Curling Club on Sunday, by way of an exciting 6-5 win over Team Pierce, and local organizers did such a bang-up job hosting the event that Curl BC has agreed to let Parksville host it again next year.

An event-high 16-teams took to the ice at the Parksville Curling Club last week (Feb. 8-12) for the 2012 BC Men’s Curling Championship, all vying for the single berth into Canada’s national men’s final to be played out in Saskatoon.

Sunday’s final pitted Royal City skip Brent Pierce against defending BC Men’s champion Jim Cotter out of Kelowna This one was a chess match from start to finish, punctuated by some outstanding shot-making, and in the end, Team Pierce saw their season come and end in a nail-biter that came down to the final shot.

Pierce, who had the hammer as the A Event winner, counted one in the first end to go up 1-0, and Cotter countered with one of his own in the third. Cotter scored one in the fourth end to go up 2-1, and Pierce tied it 2-2 with one in the fifth. Cotter scored two in the sixth to go up 4-2, and Pierce knotted it at 4-4 in the seventh with two of his own.

Pierce counted one in the eighth end to go up 5-4, and Cotter was counting two for a 6-5 lead and the win in the ninth when Pierce and his team called a time out to talk strategy.

Pierce had two options: draw the four foot for the tie, or play the angle take-out for the win.

Pierce opted for the takeout, and missed by inches. It was a gut-wrenching loss for the rink out of New Westminster. Pierce’s lead Grant Duzura fired his broom from the house towards his duffle bag in disgust as their season came to an end.

The team took it hard.

“Excellent game,” PCC president Jim Hoffman said Monday.

“For the pressure they were under it was a fantastic finish.

I would have bet money that (Pierce) would go for the draw and the tie to force the extra end, but he went for it and missed.

He’ll be back next year, though.

Without a doubt.”

“It was a tough game,” Kelowna skip Jim Cotter surmised

after. “We knew it was going to come down to the wire. They’re a great team.”

“I don’t know,” Jim shrugged easily in between other curlers coming up and congratulating him when asked if he would have played the take-out.

“It’s a tough call. It’s a feel shot; one day I may play it, one day I may draw.

“At the end of the day you have to make your shots, and one thing about these guys,” he offered as he looked over towards his teammates, “is they’re very resilient.

“Great teammates, and a great coach,” he said of two-time world champion Rick Folk, who he said has been “a real calming

“It was anybody’s game; there were a lot of good shots, and some mistakes by both teams,” he said.

Asked what he would have done in that instance Folk said he would have probably called for the draw, but made the point, “it was all or nothing ... that’s not the wrong call at all.

“Fifty per cent of the time he makes that shot, so we were fortunate today.”

Junior Girls basketball was up and running at Kwalikum Secondary School over the weekend, as eight teams took to the court for the Mid-Island District playdowns, and as expected, the tournament final was another battle between the host Kondors and the Whalers from Ballenas Secondary School.

Kwalikum blasted Barsby 38-8 in their opener (Michaela Witte led the charge for KSS with 16 points), then roared back from an 11-4 first quarter deficit to beat the NDSS Islanders 40-32 (Nikki Krishka was top scorer with 14).

BSS in the meantime clobbered Cedar 51-29 in their opener (Whaler standout Chelsea Hoey had 18 points and Brittany Britz added 10); then shredded the Wellington Wildcats 54-39 in game two (Hoey led the way with 26) to set the table for the all-local final which many had predicted.

Rebels continue to improve, as U13 girls soccer season comes to end JAMES CLARKE

The Rebels may have lost their final regular season soccer game on Saturday, but more important than the score was their continued improvement.

“Exactly,” an upbeat Oceanside U13 Girls coach Kevin Spicer said after the match, adding the hometown Rebels, “have had an adventurous season.”

The team is a mix of U12 and U13 and girls that needed to move up an age group to fill out the roster.

“This resulted in a big learning curve for all the kids playing for the first time on the regular sized field and against teams that field all U13 players.”

“She had the most shots — she kept pushing it out wide and taking it hard to the net,” said Spicer.

Nanaimo took a 1-0 lead into the half, and Crawford fed the net early in the second off a corner kick to tie it 1-1.

“Interesting enough we’ve played each other six times in the last two years, and five of those were decided by three points or less,” Witte said, and agreed, “you don’t often get games that exciting in junior ball ... two teams that know each other so well, and both teams are very good.”

Anne Jinks, who plays Myrtle, is a riot. She delivered her bad Shakespearean imitations with gusto and almost all of her lines were an unexpected surprise. Every time she spoke she managed to wring out a laugh.

Evelyn Applin as Liz also has some zingers and she plays her role with confidence.

Alycia Dunbar as Ann, proved she has the acting chops particularly in the scenes when tempers flare between her character and Arthur.

Nancy Nicholson has the role of Queenie, the owner of the town’s local newspaper. Performing as the quirky reporter, she came across as goofy, eccentric and likable.

Dolores Van Damm is played by Tina Sturgess. It was her acting debut and she was spot on with her holier-than-thou attitude. Her portrayal of a malicious tabloid editor made it easy to dislike her and secretly cheer when she eventually gets what’s coming to her.

Mike Andrews plays the role of Horace McClintock who shows up at the very end of the play to wrap everything up. No stranger to the theatre, Andrews who has to deliver lines full of plot detail was spot on as he performed his role.

The set worked effectively. It was designed

by Don Punter who created a room that was charming with knick knacks, and artwork so authentic that the set didn’t feel like a set, it actually felt like a small town bed and breakfast.

If you want a good time of mindless non-stop laughing then go see this show.
